2 Year-Old Unvaccinated Toddler With 105F Gets Rescued From Anti-Vaxx Parents By A SWAT Team

Regular readers of Bored Panda are well familiar with our stance on vaccinations by now – while we respect your rights and freedom to choose, endangering others by ignoring scientific evidence in favor of myths and quackery is not on. With cases of measles on the rise in North America and Europe because of people neglecting to vaccinate their children, despite overwhelming evidence of the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, it seems that some have decided that enough is enough.

In scenes reminiscent of a drug or anti-terrorist raid, police in Chandler, Arizona kicked down the door of a house to look for a 2-year-old boy, who had reportedly come down with a dangerously high fever. The boy was unvaccinated, and his mother was ignoring the pleas of doctors to take him to the emergency room. She was afraid of getting into trouble for not vaccinating her child. When health officials visited the house to do a welfare check the father allegedly refused them entry, saying that the fever had passed and the boy was now fine. This prompted the police to take the matter into their own hands.

With the child’s temperature having shown over 105 degrees at an earlier visit to a clinic at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, the parents had been told by doctors to take the boy to the emergency room immediately, fearing a case of meningitis. When they didn’t show up, the case was reported to the authorities. When they eventually got into the house, they found two other children, ages 6 and 4, who were also showing signs of sickness. All three children were immediately taken to the hospital and afterward placed in foster care. The 2-year-old was eventually diagnosed with a respiratory virus.

This is a pretty extreme example of authorities deciding to override parents when it comes to matters of their child’s health. In these scary times of unvaccinated children possibly infecting those around them, it has started an important discussion about individual liberties, the rights of parents and the responsibility to protect others.

The father was tearful during the ensuing court case, believing they had been treated like criminals and demanding the return of their children. He finds support from Arizona state Rep. Kelly Townsend, pictured below, who is disturbed by the case. “It was brought to my attention that these parents may have been targeted by the medical community because they hadn’t vaccinated their children,” she told AZcentral, adding that parents who don’t vaccinate their children because of medical concerns aren’t criminals and shouldn’t be treated as such. She believes that the use of a SWAT team to take the children away from their parents is “not the country that I recognize,” and has previously referred to mandatory measles vaccines as  “communist”

“What about parents’ rights to decide what’s best for their child?” Townsend said. “Parents felt the child was fine. Next thing we know, the Gestapo is at their door.”

What do you think? Should authorities be allowed to behave in this manner if they feel that a child is in danger? Or are parents within their rights to refuse treatment? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Here’s what people had to say about the incident

“What about parents’ rights to decide what’s best for their child?” Townsend said. Well, when it comes to a very sick child the parent doesn't know best, doctors do. This was a terrible risk to take with such a small child and they don't have the right to withhold essential medical care - and that should include vaccinations.

My friends daughter ended up getting sick because of a child whose parent's did not vaccinate. Her daughters fever shot up so high, the girl started to have seizures. She was rushed to the hospital and was put on a respirator. They could not get her to wake up. After the anti-seizure medication finally showed signs of working, she woke up, but will now be confined to a wheelchair and be dependent on other people for her care for the rest of your life. Now can you imagine how much her mother would like to ring the neck of the anti-vaxxer parents that thought they didn't need to immunize their children?

They deliberately chose to endanger the welfare of their children. A fever of 105 is almost a guarantee of brain damage, and in a child of two, could also be a death sentence. While a SWAT team may have been over-reacting, these children were in imminent danger of losing their lives as surely as if their parents had held them at gunpoint. ...///... They do not deserve to see their children ever again. Daddy can cry until the cows come home, he CHOSE to endanger his childrens’ lives.

To me, refusing to take a child to the hospital when their temperature reaches 105 is the equivalent of letting them play with a loaded gun. You are risking the health and life of that child. If a parent is not willing to do what is necessary to prevent a child from dying, the they should give up their rights as parents and allow someone more qualified to raise their kids. I just wish the SWAT team could have allowed the K9 units to chomp on the parents a little while to get the point across that they f***ed up.

Actually - am not 100% sure if it was the same childhood disease that killed my aunt that blinded my 13 year old great aunt for 70 years. But doest it matter?? - just vaccinate. Be safe - not precious.

These f***ing idiots. WHen your kid has a 105 fever, you don't keep him at home with your other 2 unvaccinated kids. This is so blatantly selfish and stupid. And then their father says he's "not a criminal"? That couple should be arrested for child abuse and endangerment.

Isn't it considered child abuse if a parent/parents neglect the health and welfare of their children? They weren't doing their jobs as parents so authorities had to intervene. They may not have hit their kids, but there are multiple types of abuse, including neglect. Plus, the asshole admitted that he was worried about getting in trouble. You were given the gift of parenthood, and you failed. Nearly let your own kid die. Those in the SWAT team saved at least one life that night. Fucking arrogant parents...

“What about parents’ rights to decide what’s best for their child?” That right is a myth. As a society, we've figured out that many parents are terrible and they need to meet minimum standards of care to keep their child alive and healthy. Failure to meet those standards is absolutely abuse. You don't have a right to kill your children.

Sometimes I think potential parents should have to go through the same assessments, tests and background checks that people who want to adopt go through. Being a parent is a blessing, treat your children as such. Teach them, protect them but most of all vaccinate them.

I totally respect parental rights, but if you are being told to take your child to a hospital, and you don’t, then you’re being an irresponsible parent. If you don’t take your child to the hospital because you are scared of being lectured- then you obviously don’t care about your child enough.

Parents right to decide what's best for the child? So by that logic, parents who believe starving their children and imprisoning them should be allowed to keep their children too because it's the parents choice. A fever that high is dangerous, when it comes to the health of a child, if you refuse proper medical care, you forfeit your rights as far as I'm concerned. You want to do that to yourself, go right ahead, but the child has a right to be safe, and they clearly weren't safe in this case.

Lisa J
Community Member

It seems like it would be pretty cut and dry, they were willing to risk multiple children's health over unfounded propaganda. Though in this situation, the parents risked a serious health concern because they were afraid of "getting into trouble." Damn the consequences and letting their children suffer. They shouldn't get the kids back, they will never put the safety of their current children (or any other future children) first.

Delilah Jones

I like to keep in mind that a child is helpless and their fate is at the mercy of their parents. That means if their parents make stupid decisions, the child can die. Parent does drugs, sticks toddler in oven while high, child dies. Parent has super sick child, has religious beliefs that everything should be in "god's hands" and refuses to get medical help for their child, child dies. Parents don't vaccinate, child gets possibly fatal virus, child dies. Parent drinks alcohol and go driving, car crashes, child in backseat dies. It all goes back to what I originally said, "Children are innocent and their lives and safety are at the MERCY of their parents." If there parents are STUPID and do things that endanger their children such as drugs, refusing medical treatment, not vaccinating them, then more responsible adults need to step in, take over, and protect the child from their stupid parents.

Perhaps the swat team was a tad heavyhanded. Taking guns into the situation could have caused a tragedy. But there should be some kind of enforcement available to deal with a situation like that, without the big guns. I'm not anti-vaxx; I'm vaccinated, my daughter is vaccinated, even my cats and hens are vaccinated. But I am worried about the potential for violence that is being set up here. Its not that many years since the Branch Davidians debacle. Pushing people further and further into a corner is only going to result in them hitting back.

Choosing for your kids to have a disease instead of a vaccination is not good parenting. Decisions about a child's health need to be made in the best interests of the child. To hell with parent's rights if they're going to put their children in harm's way.

I had a fever of 105 at 11 months old that set in over night. Mom rushed me to the hospital, but I still managed to have a seizure and stop breathing on the way. Only reason I’m alive today is due to the hospital being so close. On the flip side, a former in law was severely mentally handicapped as a child when she spiked a fever that high and wasn’t hospitalized in time. Her brain was so fried she lost the ability to learn/retain anything and was essentially stuck as a 3 year old child in an adult body.

I read a slightly diferent version of the story. The 2 year old child had a fever of 105F(40,5C) when they visited the doctor. He advised parents to take the child to a hospital. When the parents returned home the child "only" had a temperature of 102F (38.8C) so they didn't take it to the hospital. One week passed and the doctor found out that the parents ignored his advice so he called CPS. Cps issued a warrant, police went to the home and asked the parents to let them in because they had a warrant. The father refused and the situation escalated. The police entered the house forcefully and found 3 children in beds under puke covered sheets. Children were taken away.

Carrie de Luka

Still sounds bad though. Fevers are so dangerous in tiny children - it can go wrong very quickly. Why did the parents go home instead of straight to a hospital anyway? They didn't intend going to the hospital at all I expect. They're bound to say that the temperature had gone down rather than admit that they were ignoring a higher fever.

Why should parents get to decide about vaccinations? Are they medically trained? (obviously yes in some cases!) Is it their right to decide if another child gets sick because they haven't vaccinated their own? If you don't have all the information possible to make the decision and it's not for a medical reason, why gamble on yours and others children's lives! I'm autistic, I'm vaccinated. I wouldn't change that, even if I could.

Look I get it. Parents want the right to raise their children the way they see fit. As a parent of three who have been vaccinated, without any problems or side effects, I wouldn't want someone to tell me what to do. With that being said, if your child is not vaccinated and attends school, it is both unfair to the vaccinated children and the unvaccinated child. For the vaccinated, they are exposed to illnesses that can be prevented from a shot. The children without the vaccines are at risk to catch things other children may carry even if they are not bothered by it. The point that really bothers me is the fact that the child's fever was 105. Can children with vaccines run high temperatures, yes, but, most parents would take a child to a doctor for help. This to me is the real problem. If you claim to be a parent, be a good parent. Take your children to the doctor. Protect them from harm.

wow.... imo, this is NOT about "to vaccinate or not to vaccinate"... this is about the rights of a swat team to come busting into your house, in full gear, guns drawn, adrenaline pumping, barking orders, etc. (cuz we all know how self-restrained a swat team can be... that's why family pets are often killed as well as the "accidental shooting" of residents which occurs)... And if you DEFEND the "rights" of a swat team to come barging in someone's house on the basis that the parents didn't vaccinate their kids, THEN it is only a short hop to extend the "rights" of swat teams to bust into houses for other reasons.... Today, it's the "anti-vaxer" group.... Tomorrow, it might be a group YOU belong to.... I can't believe how many people have been lulled to sleep and climbed on the bandwagon to persecute a group of people just because they DISAGREE with them... The precedent will have been set.... And more and more groups of people will be subject to swat team invasion of their homes....

Its simple. What if a parent things it's best for their child to play with a hand grenade? Is that ok? No. Is it ok for them to not to get vaccinated? No. It's not. It's not ok. It's literally as stupid as thinking it's best for your child to learn how to swim by throwing them into the middle of the pacific and hoping for the best. Do you know what a 105 fever can do? It can literally melt the brain. It will denature proteins and can cause permeant damage. (Molecular Bio degree here, I know what I'm taking about) The chances of you recovering from an infection to that degree without medical help is slim. And you run the risk of infecting others as you are probably HIGHLY contagious at that time. NO ONE has the right to endanger others. NO ONE, no matter how BEST they think it is for themselves or their kids. Some people are too dumb to make that decision. And anti-vaxxers are literally that dumb. They lack the basic intelligence to making those kind of decisions. Period

Okay, I vaccinated my kids. After having a family member going through chemo therapy I had to be very careful that nobody came near them with a cold, flu, mumps, measles etc. So I am a believer in modern medicine. I have a son that is a M.D. and another that is a R.N. However, part of the story was left out. I live in Mesa Arizona and this was a local story. The mother took her son with a fever home from the clinic where he was said to be running 105 temp. She was waiting for her husband before going to the E.R. meanwhile the child's temp dropped down to 101 he started feeling better and they were monitoring his fever for a few hours and it stayed between 100 & 101. The other kids were fine. It was after his temp lowered and stayed down that the S.W.A.T. team kicked the door down and C.P.S. took their kids. The child did not have meningitis he had a cold. What is ironic here is how often C.P.S. does nothing when a kid is being beaten, starved or molested and ends up dead, yet had the

Personal opinion: As an EMT in training 105 fever is sever. That child was at risk no matter what way you spin this story, and should have been taken to the hospital immediately. I still believe something is fishy about vaccinations. I am sure if does a lot of good in one area but does it also have negative side effects we may not understand as regular citizens. You can agree or not. I am just saying, many of the parents that have spoken out about vaccination or fought back have been punished to an extreme. My ears perk up at this topic.

“What about parents’ rights to decide what’s best for their child?” Townsend said. So in this case the parents decided the kids are ok, EVEN with the 2 year old at 105 degrees and confirmed to have a respiratory virus, and that's what's best for them? If the children die due to lack of vaccination, shouldn't the parents be held accountable? And Townsend agreeing to this would make her an accomplice to what is by definition "involuntary manslaughter"? Let me guess, if this reaches the court they (the parents, or people like Townsend) can get away with it by simply stating mental incapacity? Well they are definitely incapable of EVEN thinking of their children's health and should be made incapable of breeding.

Victoria Swift

This doesn't tell the entire story. At all. The real version is that the kids fever had already went down and the kid was feeling better. NO ONE has a right to break a door down and steel a child from a parent over this. I hope the parents sue the pants off the doctor, cps, and the police department.

They are the product of the irrational fears and skepticisms of fools, and those provocateurs fuel that paranoia, feed into that to cause a stir, maybe for an agenda or maybe simply because they're trolls, but I will tell you one thing; doubt in vaccines, climate change, and welfare endanger millions of lives. But surely, the markets for alternative medicine, fossil fuel, and premium health insurance, have absolutely nothing to gain by flaring up these irrational fears....right?

Jeeze louise, my daughters temp went that high last year and I was terrified. I took her to the ER twice, they told me to alternate between Tylenol and Motrin every three hours and to monitor the temp, if it went over 105 on the meds i was to bring her back. She had the flu and there was a nasty bout of pneumonia going around so they did not want to admit her. I was up every hour and half around the clock to either check her temp or give her medicine. Thankfully it stayed down with meds and finally totally broke after a week but that was SUCH a scary week for me. I cant imagine just being like "Oh oh well lets go home even though the doc said ER"

Don't lie about respecting readers' right to choose. I used to think this website was an advocate for animal welfare, but it completely ignores the repugnant fact that cow fetuses are tortured to death to extract the blood from their hearts for feeding the cells used to grow viruses for vaccines. BoredPanda is apparently run by cowards with a severe lack of ethical integrity. Everyone has to die, but some of us have morals that prohibit torturing animals.

I'm torn between the imminent threat to the child (FYI: according to the Seattle Children's Hospital - "Fevers with infections don't cause brain damage. Only temperatures above 108° F (42° C) can cause brain damage.") A fever of 105F can still be dangerous. However, I do think that perhaps there was excessive use of force (calling in SWAT?). Calling in the police for child endangerment was probably warranted, but the method in which they were deployed might have been a little overkill? So again, I'm torn how to feel for this event.

I agree the children we're not safe in this extreme example. This is a fear inciting situation and story. However why were the parents so scared? I also did not realize good panda had taken such a strong stance against a parents rights. I enjoy so many stories from here and regret that we disagree on something so important. I however will not be bullied into vaccinations. I'm not against vaccines because of autism. I have rights and i will utilize them as I'm sure so many other parents with same beliefs will.

In the end it turned out that vaccination would do nothing, because the children contracted infection unrelated to any condition preventable by common inoculations. By the way, Townsend is right, mandatory vaccinations ARE communist as they put the interest of the community over the individual liberties, but this only shows that not every liberal, individualistic solution is automatically beneficial and every form of communal thinking is harmful. Reality doesn't bend to fit political agenda. Now, it is not the matter or whether inoculations are mandatory or not, it is the level of common responsibility and civil responsibility. In most European countries bar the former communist states there are no mandatory vaccinations, yet almost everyone inoculates their kids against most serious conditions (polio, diphtheria, pertussis, sometimes hepatitis, measles and mumps).

Choosing not to treat a child with a temperature that guarantees brain damage is child abuse. it’s not just a sin, it’s a felony. These people belong in prison. ...///... I agree with everything, however how is everyone ignoring that the children didn't have meningitis? Without knowing WHY the parents refused, perhaps they were certain it was not meningitis? Its certainly worth looking at but a solid case for defence, we didn't think the child had the condition because of XYZ - modern medicine, we believe they do have the condition (for completely reasonable sensible reasons) - end result? Child did not have the condition. Just a virus. The common cold is a virus. Perhaps it's worth looking at this a bit deeper. For the record their nuts not to get vaxxed anyway, but yeah, just seems to only be one side of the story.

Laugh Fan

The child had a dangerously high temperature and should have been on fluids and being monitored by professionals. Doesn't matter that it was caused by a cold. A child's body cannot cope with a fever the same way an adults does. No-one should ignore a temperature like that for a two year old. The child's mother was ignoring the pleas of staff to take him to the emergency room because she was afraid of getting into trouble for not vaccinating her child - that shouldn't have mattered more than her child having a dangerously high fever.

How about telling the WHOLE truth about this situation? The parents checked his temp while driving to the hospital and it came down to 102. They decided it was receding, and he didn't need to go to the hospital. BTW, when have measles turned into a horrible deadly disease? Except for the very rare death from it; virtually everybody survives. I did and so did every other kid I went to school with who had it. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. Medical kidnapping is becoming the norm and it's much more dangerous than a case of measles.

Lilian Della Rose

Medical kidnapping is not the issue here. The issue is ignorant parents who should have vaccinated their children were willing to let them suffer so they wouldn’t be blamed for not vaccinating them. And measles can kills people, but specifically only those who have not been vaccinated are susceptible

“What about parents’ rights to decide what’s best for their child?” Townsend said. Well, when it comes to a very sick child the parent doesn't know best, doctors do. This was a terrible risk to take with such a small child and they don't have the right to withhold essential medical care - and that should include vaccinations.

Carol Emory

Carol Emory

To me, refusing to take a child to the hospital when their temperature reaches 105 is the equivalent of letting them play with a loaded gun. You are risking the health and life of that child. If a parent is not willing to do what is necessary to prevent a child from dying, the they should give up their rights as parents and allow someone more qualified to raise their kids. I just wish the SWAT team could have allowed the K9 units to chomp on the parents a little while to get the point across that they f***ed up.

Community Member

But there should be some kind of enforcement available to deal with a situation like that, without the big guns. I'm not anti-vaxx; I'm vaccinated, my daughter is vaccinated, even my cats and hens are vaccinated. But I am worried about the potential for violence that is being set up here.

Is it their right to decide if another child gets sick because they haven't vaccinated their own? If you don't have all the information possible to make the decision and it's not for a medical reason, why gamble on yours and others children's lives! I'm autistic, I'm vaccinated.

In my county children are not allowed to go to school without the parents proving they are vaccinated. I don't get why people even have the right to chose to vaccinate their kids. It should just be a given as you put other families in danger... These parents that allowed their kids to get so ill should be jailed and left to get a fever

Finally, someone had the guts to stand up to this ridiculous wave of idiocy sweeping Western countries. Well done.

You only vaccinate / take to hospital those kids you wish to keep. Other than that, do as you please but don't complain about it. This is some whole next level stuff. I mean, it's okay to be critical but come on! I once talked to someone who said that I definitely shouldn't give my kids the polio-vaccination when I get kids. Only because polio just isn't around anymore -.- same logic, different words with other vaccinations. Well, they did believe the whole nwo-package as well.

Seriously fuck Andrew Wakefield and his junk science that's perverted the minds of so many hysterical parents. Amazing how much damage The Lancet did when they published his garbage "findings".

wow.... imo, this is NOT about "to vaccinate or not to vaccinate"... this is about the rights of a swat team to come busting into your house, in full gear, guns drawn, adrenaline pumping, barking orders, etc.

This doesn't tell the entire story. At all. The real version is that the kids fever had already went down and the kid was feeling better. NO ONE has a right to break a door down and steel a child from a parent over this. I hope the parents sue the pants off the doctor, cps, and the police department.

I don't remember who told me this or where I heard this but it went along the lines of... Its funny how some parents hide their kids from vaccines and blame them for illnesses but when their child gets sick or has a broken bone. The parents then remember their is a place to remedy the issue. (Hospitals and Doctors.)

Resist all urge to believe in conspiracy theories. This is what they wrought.
