The animal kingdom contains so much more than just iconic lions, lone wolves, and our beloved silly cats. Planet Earth is home to millions of different species that make us excited and immediately inspire us to learn everything about them. But while charismatic and cuddly creatures get all the hype, some critters are unfortunate enough to have a bad rep as dangerous, frightening, or even disgusting. So let's balance out the scales a little bit, shall we?

Some nature enthusiasts pay attention to these underappreciated rarities and are ready to share their discoveries with everyone online. So when user sqnyq reached out to Ask Reddit with a very fine question, "Which animal do you think deserves more love and recognition than it gets?", people wasted no time in typing out their answers.

To celebrate their efforts and show some admiration for these overly misunderstood creatures, we have gone through the thread and handpicked some of the best responses it had to offer. So scroll down and enjoy learning more about these species as much as we did. Share your own takes with us in the comments, and be sure to check out our previous feature on weird animal facts right over here!

Black raven perched on a rock with blurred landscape background featured in animals that don't get recognition Crows, they are so intelligent When I was 14, working at a farm some crown opened our chickens door (they were just a different breed that makes blue eggs, to separate them among the others we had them in a huge cage that they can really move around, a huge one). i was so fucking mad like why the fuck a crown would open that fucking door. anyways i closed it. few minutes after, same crown opened the door again. when i went there i was shocked. there was a huge snake there and the crow was literally trying to help the chickens to get away from the snake. people just look at them as some useless bird whatsoever but they are not

We raised an injured baby crow and though he was eventually able to be released, he chose to stay with us. He lived outside high up in a giant hemlock. He would steal anything shiny, but he would “trade”. One time my dad was working on the car In the driveway and when he turned around to grab one of his tools there was a blonde Barbie doll head in its place.🤣

    Night Shift Hangout

Fruit bats hanging upside down on tree branches, showcasing animals that don't get the recognition they deserve. Bats. Bats are one of the most beneficial animals on the planet. A single bat can eat over 1,000 insects in one night of feasting. Take into account the largest bat colony is in Texas and is about 20-40 million bats (depending on time of year). Think about how many more bugs there would be without those bats

Of course the bats came n I swear they'd play with her. Swooping towards her and she'd run around the yard chasing them. I had a blast watching!!!

To learn more about underrated creatures and why we fail to give them the appreciation they truly deserve, we spoke with Jennifer Verdolin, Ph.D. She is an internationally recognized animal behavior expert, professor at the University of Arizona, and author of Wild Connection: What Animal Courtship and Mating Tell Us about Human Relationships who shares her insights about the animal kingdom on Twitter and Instagram under the handle @RealDrJen.

According to Verdolin, most species are overlooked and underrated, but one that she believes deserves a ton more credit is vultures. "Globally, they are one of the most threatened groups of birds," she told Bored Panda. While there are many incredible species of vulture, "23 to be exact", the animal behavior expert wanted to focus on the black vulture.

"They are socially complex, hanging out together to eat or roost together. When they are socializing there is the usual drama, some friendly interactions, some aggressive ones, that one vulture that wants to be in charge, eat first, etc.," she explained, adding that they are pretty monogamous too. "Of course, they provide an important service. They are the cleaners and I've watched them pick the carcass of a raccoon or possum clean in a little under an hour."

    Buzzing Through Life

Honeybee pollinating bright yellow flowers, one of the 50 animals that don't get the recognition they deserve in nature. The simple honey bee... They are endangered and are a major part of the ecosystem. Without the honey bee lots of vegetation would die off due to the lack of pollination. No I am not a bee keeper or even work with bees, its just I have a healthy respect for them and what they do. Spiders on the other hand can all go back to that alien planet they came from.

Don't say a bad word about spiders! I had an infestation of Florida Brown Widows, and they were only there because we had an infestation of some type of bug that came in a shipment of dog food. Most spiders aren't harmful to humans, and the ones that are usually hide or show bright colors to scare you off. If you live anywhere near mosquitoes, you should be happy to have spiders, mosquitoes are the deadliest insects on the planet.

Exactly! If you want any insect to completely disappear, it should be mosquitoes; they're useless and only aid in spreading diseases.

It's a shame you had to ruin your entry, and somehow completely miss the point of the whole post, with that last sentence about spiders. They might not be as iconic and obviously useful to humanity as honey bees, but they also have their right place on Earth, whether you like them or not. Most of them are completely harmless to us. Some of them are very beneficial as predators of mosquitoes, and more than welcome in our houses for that reason. All of them have the right to live, anyway. You cannot just select the species you deem acceptable and discard the others. It's not how ecosystems work.

Not entirely sure about Europe, but the honey bee isn't native in the U.S. The focus in the U.S. needs to be on saving pollinators (all insects, really. But for this argument, pollinators). This includes all sorts of bees, wasps, flies (really!), moths, and more. This "save the bees" thing is a nice thought, but I don't think anyone consulted any ecologists when coming up with that slogan.

Is that completely true? All the sources I find that their are 4000 bees native to the USA only not honey bees. That doesn’t meen they are no great pollinators. In Europe we are also (especially) trying to safe the “non commercial” bees for that reason. Experts saying we shouldn’t have to many honey bees because they are invasive to the other species.

Racoons are prolly the animals I miss the most after moving to France. They call them ratonlavers here,(rats that wash) and I've seen them in zoos, which freaks me out a little because they don't belong in zoos. But having grown up with them in New England, and dealing with their mischievous antics on camping trips, they are the animal I miss most.

Wildlife is truly remarkable. The whole animal world is fascinating and full of unsolved mysteries we humans are trying so hard to crack. But at the same time, we tend to pay more attention to certain species (often adorable-looking) and continue to carry specific opinions about other critters that usually turn out to be wrong.

When asked why some animals unconsciously appeal to us more, Verdolin pointed out there are a few answers to this. As she explained in her book Raised by Animals: The Surprising New Science of Animal Family Dynamics, animals that are "cute" or look young (just like pandas, dear readers) trigger our brains to be careful, look after, take care of them, and reduce aggression.

"That's why we will spend hours looking at videos of baby animals. Once animals are all grown up, I think some species, like the panda and koala benefit from this tendency," she continued. "They have large heads, and in the case of pandas, a coloration that makes them look like they have big eyes — even though neither of these species is particularly friendly."

Keep some underground bushy for shelter and leave some leafs around so they can forrage in your garden, and when winter come they like to sleep in a warm and sheltered cosy place. It used to be our compost mounds, so if you can have that or something similair. But right now the biggest new threath is self moving lawnmowers, perticulary when left on in the evening night time

there are two types of hedgehogs. The pet variety is the African Pygmy Hedgehog, which has more or less been domesticated. Then there's the wild variety which is the European hedgheog, which is a lot larger. African Pygmy Hedgehogs aren't taken from the wild to become pets. They're theorized to be the descendants of North African and Algerian hedgheogs, which the Romans started domesticating and keeping as pets back in the 4th Century BC, and have just continually been bred as pets throughout history.

"Another factor, though, that we can't ignore is the cultural conversation we have about some species and mythology about certain animals," Verdolin said, adding that the perfect example of this is the wolf. "We literally spend billions to care for our pet dogs, which are essentially juvenile wolves 7000 years + removed, and support movies and policies that decimate wolves. We also have a disdain and fear of coyotes, which are not that different either."

There are countless other species like sharks, snakes, and bats that have a bad rep in the human world and face similar issues like wolves and coyotes. "The cultural stories we have about them reinforce negative tropes and influence our opinions," Verdolin said. "And then there are of course the 'unattractive' animals. We are incredibly biased against species we don't think are 'cute' or attractive."

In the late fall my husband cut down wild grasses growing around the house and put them in the woods. Late one winter a flock of 20 or so Mallard Ducks landed on the flatten grasses and began brushing the snow off with out stretched wings. They then began eating the seed that remained on the tassels. It was a marvel to observe.

The animal behavior expert revealed we tend to underestimate most species of other animals. "Historically, modern humans have looked for ways to separate themselves from other animals. This is in direct contrast to Indigenous people that see themselves integrated with nature, reflecting the traits and aspects of other species in their cultures, beliefs, and spirituality," she continued.

"So first we have this notion that we are separate from and then comes the idea that we are better than. Incidentally, this is connected to how we have marginalized groups of people whether it be based on socially defined racial categories, gender, religion, etc." Verdolin pointed out this led to us ranking other species as better or worse according to how "similar" they are to us.

Same. It’s just…it’s just those two extra legs, you know? And some will even jump toward you. Makes me shudder just thinking of it. They didn’t bother me until I was a teenager just sitting in the living room reading, when something tickled my leg. By the time I looked down, the spider had run up my leg and body, then my face. My Face. It disappeared into my hair—-My Hair! I screamed and started hitting myself on my head. My mother came running and I told her what happened. She found the dead spider and removed it from my hair. That’s what started it. On an intellectual level, I know that spider was more scared than I was, and that most of them are. On an emotional level, that incident shook me up so much that I just don’t want them anywhere they could lower themselves from above me, or crawl anywhere on me. I. Just. Can’t. Even.

I have 5 and they are my favorite creatures on the planet by about a mile. I never would have thought that until I rescued my first pig. I went from someone just making room for an animal in need to a proud pig person in about 10 mins. Underappreciated isn't a strong enough word for these guys. They are amazing!

If you ever get to see the series where robotic animals were placed in certain environments to see if they would be accepted as part of a family group was incredible. Spy in the Wild is the name of the show. Some of the "animals" took 2 years to build as they looked exactly like the animals themselves. The orangutan was one one of my favorite episodes. Smart and very funny.

I’d second that. They deserve more recognition simply for being so different and cool. Like a mash up from the animal parts bin. Nature’s own version of Frankenstein monster. The first scientist George Shaw to examine a preserved platypus body (in 1799) thought at first it was a fake, and looked for stitches because he believed it to be made of several animals sewn together.

So Verdolin would like to remind you that we humans are not that separate from other animals. "What happens to them, how we treat them, is a direct reflection of the state we are in right now. As puffins washed ashore dead earlier this year and little blue penguins followed a few weeks ago, other species are in crisis," she reminded us. "And so are we."

She understands it’s much easier to think about a panda than a squirrel that’s running around in your backyard. "But every squirrel is out there trying to make a living, raise a family, avoid death and suffering, and catch a few naps in the morning sunlight. Stop for a minute next time to watch, observe, and think about how you can make the lives of animals right there around you better today," Verdolin concluded.

Plus they eat slug eggs and ticks. I compared reports of encefalitis and how much henhouses were around villages and small towns (those data are not easy to find, because nobody keeps track of henhouses, but when you ask people, they will tell you if their relatives have or had them and sometimes getting data for illnesses is hard, because not everything was kept perfectly) and it looks like chickens helped to keep that illness quite low. Maybe it is a good idea to return chickens back to our everyday life. Plus you can sell eggs for small profit...

Well, elephants actually look at humans and think we're cute! It's beautiful how we interact together, why should we hurt these gorgeous creatures?

They cry. I watched a documentary of a heard of elephants who would migrate due to draught. They stopped to grieve at the place where one of their matriarchs had died and all that was left were her bones and they cried. They also have a very good memory and can remember how someone treated them badly decades later.

However they were responsible for carrying the fleas that did spread the plague. Unfortunately humans of the time didn't know that so they killed the cats instead. The cats, of course, were keeping the rat population in check. Once most of the cats were gone... Black Death.

    Quietly Chewing Through Life

Close-up of a wet animal swimming in water, highlighting one of the 50 animals that don't get the recognition they deserve. Beavers. Beavers are incredibly hard workers. Capable of the same level of decision making and precision that goes into our construction of dams or homes or chopping down trees. There ears can sense the slight trickle of water indicating a leak. In a story linked below the arrival of settlers in the 1800’s wiped out beavers in one area effectively destroying the ecosystems that the beaver dams had created and wildlife depended on. The loss of beavers was still so profound that HUMANS started to make their own beaver dams!! Then like the born workers they are, a few beavers must have heard through the grapevine and took over what humans were doing with far more than their teeth and bare hands. They work so hard. Their work ethic is better than any humans. They are always on call. No nights off. Now, I truly admire the team work and socialist structure of most any colonies, but beavers can build dams that transform its environment and create their own mini ecosystem. They are incredibly important and considered a keystone species. The largest beaver dam is half a mile long and started in the 70’s and is located in Canada. That’s generations of beavers dedicated to the “family business” of continuing this huge dam. They of course continue to MAINTAIN a dam a half mile long. Made of just sticks and trees and mud and whatever other tricks they have. I have the utmost respect for their abilities and contributions to their environments! Seeing videos blowing up their incredibly hard work makes me sad. I get it, someone’s poor garden is flooded and we can’t stand for that. Or someone’s property is filling with water and they have the right to not want it to. But, it just seems so horrible to destroy something so incredibly built and with such hard work and dedication and brain power that we need to blow it up to take it down. For the record, I get that beavers can cost millions in damages to property and some support trapping when their numbers get high or they become a problem. But, I just truly hope animals have the capacity to just laugh at a species who’s numbers are growing faster than the environment can handle or support, whom quickly destroy and invade their homes before they take over and are everywhere, who cost thousands and thousands of years of growth and strength and survival in trees every year with their destruction, that species having the NERVE to point to others as needing help being controlled. Calling others destructive or a nuisance. The best part is saying with a straight face how another species population is growing too fast and too large and needs to be culled and controlled. I know, I’m human. But even if it’s just us, it still feels hypocritical to say. BEAVERS ARE AMAZING (Just don’t think about the rodent thing)

They have been around for decades in my region, and while it's almost impossible to see them "in person", the work they achieve and how it transforms the environment is absolutely mind blowing. There's a small stream just next to my house, we used to play there a lot when we were kids. Now there's a huge and sophisticated dam where there was hardly a trickle of water in summer, and I'm pretty sure a lot of frogs have settled there (I can hear them loud on spring nights) and maybe some fish too.

I got to see one up close this summer! I have a park near my house where I walk a lot and I've seen beavers swimming or even on the shore quite a few times, but never closer than about 30 feet / 9 metres. Then the other day I was walking my dog and it was quite hot for her so I brought her up to the water to see if she would drink. The beaver and I noticed each other at the same time and it immediately dove underwater, but then I could see it curve back around to the shore like 6' / 1.8m away. I slowly kneeled so I could keep my dog under control and watched for a bit. I know beavers can be quite dangerous if they feel threatened so staying where I was felt almost safer than backing away. Head and part of the tail were both out of the water and I got to watch it lifting branches to its mouth to chew on. Eventually I stood up and backed myself & the dog out of there. It was really cool though and I"m so glad I got to witness that!

It's my understanding that if there is a family of beavers and one of them dies or gets killed they'll immediately conceive another baby so that they have the correct amount of beavers for their home. I don't know if that's true or not, but I read it on the Internet, so it has to be true. 😁🤗

There is a theory that some people (especially misogynistic twats) look at animals that have strong and aggressive females as being suspicious. Disney really hasn't been great on the equality front so it's not surprising that they would look at hyenas as evil.

Although I now know better and will not support Sea World, I went as a teen with a school trip and I swear I had a moment with a beluga. He (she?) stayed perfectly still in the water, right against the glass. I was sitting cross legged on the floor. It was dark, because it was part of the enclosure that you could walk into / under. We just stared at each other. I put my hand up and he put his head against the glass where my hand was. We stayed that way for about 10 minutes and then he swam away. I was so sad- I mean, I seriously aches inside. And I was an a*****e punk teenager. Then he came back! He did somersaults and flips and all sorts of people started pointing and shouting but he just kept staring at me. It was the most profound event

Zoos and aquariums actually help with conservation of species. They may not have started out that way, but the vast majority have changed to have conservation as a purpose. Thanks to said programs several species extinct in the wild have been successfully reintroduced.

I appreciate the aquariums that rescue marine mammals like seals, dolphins and bélugas, and penguins, and try to return them to the wild. The aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut has such a program. The aquarium is also a research facility for marine mammals and (to my last knowledge) was the "home" port for Bob Ballard outside of Woodshole oceanographic institute and his deep sea research. (sorry to make a plug for support, - - my sister is an océanographer based at Whoi and BIOS and studies climate challenges on the oceans. Her husband is the president of BIOS, and I don't mind drumming up support for their research, or that of Mystic Aquarium. I spent a lot of time as a child there, and with my own children, so it's a bit of a legacy. Now in France, I live too far from the aquarium in LA Rochelle, but have visited, and it's wonderful. If any of you like nintendo, The games Endless Ocean and Endless Ocean:Blue World are great for learning more about the world oceans, the flora and fauna

But if you don't live in China you have no say, and honestly why is any different from the rest of world eating pork? Cows and pigs suffer through hell for our dinner plates, I love dogs so much but this is hypocritical if you happily eat beef, lamb, pork or chicken.

So true but also house cats!!! Cats and "cat people" get such a bad rap!! So many people see cats as unaffectionate, manipulative and worse. And "cat people" - especially women cat people - are stereotyped as lonely, unwanted, frumpy people. Horrible stereotypes! And why can't we all like both dogs AND cats? Why does it have to be "dog person" or "cat person "???

Dogs are one of the greatest things humans have, as Roger Caras said "Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made"

I noticed however that there's never this much love for cats. I never see commercials about getting cats. Or anything like that. There are even commercials about adopting shelter dogs with issues but never about adopting a black cat. I saw one lady say she would kill her cat for her dog. Wtf.

I was growing up in Transylvania. I was 9 year old, when one summer night I was taking out the garbage. The next thing was a brown-bear cub, what I encountered face-to-face at the bins. It was cute, but at first scared the s-h-i-t out of me. The mommy I saw 2 bins farther.

    Perched and Pensive

Vulture perched on a branch, one of the animals that don't get the recognition they absolutely deserve in nature. Vultures are natures sanitizer. By eating the carrion, they prevent the spread of diseases. Their stomach acid destroys any pathogens and they also have a very stout immune system and their urine and defecations "cleans" the area of the carcass.

A renaissance fair I’d continually attend for years (until COVID hit) had a bird of prey show from a raptor rescue. One of the stars was a black vulture who the audience would be warned had learned to sniff out their turkey legs if they had them out. One time; one of the vulture there was supposed to fly back to their handler after their part of the show. Instead, the vulture came waddling back to the “stage”. 🤣It was adorable.

I had a pigeon I raised when i was in second grade. It had fallen out of a nest where my dad worked. That pigeon followed me every where outside after i taught him to fly. He even landed outside the windows when i was indoors and did his little dance. He'd attack the schoolbus when it "ate" me. Once he even chased a bully about a quarter mile, flapping at her head. That bird was my best friend! Unfortunately i pissed off some older kids by sitting in "their" seat on the bus and in retaliation they later shot my poor pigeon. People, can we please get rid of guns?

Several years ago, I was working in a street-front real estate office. The building had an awning. There was a baby pigeon stuck in the netting underneath the awning and an adult pigeon was on the ground frantically trying to do something to get that baby down. There was nothing we could do, unfortunately. I even called a pigeon rescue but they were unable to come due to the fairly remote location of the office. That haunts me to this day. I have a new respect for pigeons now.

We have a pigeon pair living in a tree in our frontyard. They have babies like three times a year. Last year we had to co-parent them as they fell out of the tree regularly and we put them back up so that the cats or other birds wouldn't catch them. Additionally they steal our strawberries but I am not mad. They're actually awesome creatures

This should be way higher on the list in my personal opinion!!! People look at them like nasty nuisances, unfortunately. I think they are lovely. I've had the pleasure of feeding them from the palm of my hands while waiting for the train on several occasions. Ive had other people come by and try it because they saw me doing so and figured it would be easy, and they fly away. A lady once said that the birds must be used to me feeding them and that's why I was able to and she wasn't. I was pleased to inform her that I had never been to the stop I was at before in my life because I got on the wrong train, and I had only been sitting on that particular bench for less than 10 minutes.. I swear that they can feel the vibes from people and decide if they trust to get that close or not based off of it. Maybe I'm crazy but I feel that to be true based on experience alone. (:

    Silent Watcher Moves

Close-up of a green snake on a branch, one of the 50 animals that don’t get the recognition they deserve. Reptiles generally. A lot of people think of reptiles and are disgusted. They either think of slimey snakes or agressive dragons. Don't get me wrong, they aren't always cute and cuddly, but there's so many snakes in rescues that never get a home because of the stigma. I don't think an exotic pet is right for everyone by any means, in fact I think it should be more regulated so that you have to put some thought into having one, but they really can be affectionate with the right owner and time.

I can say from experience that reptiles make awesome pets. All of our snakes were extremely friendly. The last one that we currently have is actually friendly with our two cats. Reptiles do get a bad rap that they don't deserve.

Where I live we have copperheads near the water, but black rats snakes in the fields. I steer clear of the venomous copperheads, but will stop and try to move a black rat snake off a road in summer. A black rat snake in your yard will keep rodents at bay, as that’s their main diet (hence the name, black RAT snake). They crawl onto the road because it’s warm, and they get groggy and don’t move. I just find a strong stick, maneuver it under them, then lift and move them into the grass. Some will try to strike at you, but they have teeth, not fangs. They will bite but are not venomous. (I do the same for turtles, only I just pick them up without a stick—-though I will put a stick in a slimy stinking bad tempered snapping turtle’s mouth, as I have been bitten by a rather large one in the past.)

    Bamboo Buffet Bliss

Giant panda eating bamboo, one of the animals that don’t get the recognition they absolutely deserve in nature. Okay so I know a lot of people hate pandas for them eating bamboo even tho they’re designed to eat meat, but it’s not because they’re stupid. They lost their taste for meat. A gene they had which “motivated” them to hunt and eat meat somehow disappeared. It’s not like they can control that. And people also say they don’t mate on their own. Well god made female pandas go in heat for only three flippin days out of an entire flippin year. That’s it. Since their population numbers are so low, what are the chances a male and a female are going to see each other in that time frame

What's the point of having a cool looking dragon for a pet if it's only going to try to stab your toes or slice your fingers off or actually mess with you b/c it makes sounds so realistic, it can mimic the door opening, car locking or water leaking? If owners swear at them, 'punish them' by tapping their back or something, what can you expect? For them to just love you? They are not demons, and they deserve to be pets, just deserve BETTER owners.

Another majestic creature being hunted. Intelligent animals that are gentle enough to care for babies, but strong enough to rip an arm off. Again, the Rangers protecting them are amazing. The gorillas know that they are there and many times come to trust them. 140 Rangers have been killed by poachers.

Remember when that little boy fell into the gorilla enclosure at Jersey zoo, knocked himself out, the humans were panicking, and the big guy just stood over him keeping the nosy gorilla kids away til a human came in to get him. Not saying I wouldn't have panicked, but a baby falling out of a tree is something a gorilla would know how to deal with

In Rwanda many of the rangers, guides, and porters who help tourists get to see the gorillas are former poachers. They can make as much in a week as a porter as they might earn in months poaching. The eco-tourism that pays for their salaries are saving the gorillas. It ain't cheap but it was absolutely one of the peak experiences of my life. If I ever get back to Africa I'd pay to see them three days in a row: once just to marvel at them, then for the next two days to take them in at my leisure. Worth every penny.

Going to Rwanda and going gorilla watching while there is something I've dreamed of doing for a long time. The price is a bit steep, but knowing it goes to help the gorillas themselves makes it absolutely worth it.

Poachers are the ones who need to be on the endangered or extinct lists. I cheer every time an animal maims or outright kills the poachers. Poachers are right there with sport hunters, both are lower than pond scum.

Swans mate for life. If their mate dies, the remaining swan sometimes will stop eating - intentionally. A pair of swans at a lake near my home had this happen. As an effort to keep the male who lost his mate from dying, they brought in a new female. They knew the swans wouldn't mate, but they hoped the new female would be a companion. It worked.

A black swan was in my neighborhood pond. It's mate killed by coyotes. Beautiful with curly feathers. Very large bird. Up close I noticed his wings were off. One looked broken. Then I found out a neighbor had bought both from some guy who owned a bar in Houston. He had broken the wings to keep them from flying off. On top of that she put them in the retention pond. Not a real pond but for yard and rain run off. So full of fertilizer and insect poison. On top of that she put fish in it too. The "pond" was full of metal and glass trash. Smelled like a sewer. I called Parks and Wildlife. They came and got him. His wing was infected and had been that way for a long time. They treated him and kept him at a large pond with other swans. Fined her. She had no authority whatsoever to do what she did and it was cruel. The whole neighborhood missed him. People would take their young kids down to see him. Very dangerous and territorial. If a black swan puts his head up like a periscope run!

    Chillin\' in Color

Colorful lizard resting on a rock, showcasing one of the animals that don't get the recognition they deserve in nature. Lizards in general. I hate when people say that they can not form social connections, I have a bearded dragon that will go out of her way to cuddle up to me, I had a male dragon that was best friends with my golden lab. Their favorite activity was looking out the window together. They would sit there, and my dragon would snuggle up to his ear and they would watch squirrels for hours. I believe that social cues for reptiles are very foreign and alien to us, but if you can find a way to open a door to their heart, you will never find a warmer place, even with cold blood. It is kind of like the way that I am attracted to 'bitchy' women, sure they are scaled and thorny on the outside. But when she wants to love on you and cuddle up, you will feel like the most important person in the world.

Switzerland has a law stating it's illegal to keep one or sell one on it's own, every country needs that law.

I have twelve furry reasons to love the little personalities. I got the first one 24 years ago and what still astounds me most is how emotional they are. Last Tuesday we had to put down Sam (the guy in the profile pic) and his buddies and brother still grieve. Esp. his brother is having a hard time. They can also be grumpy, happy, resentful, stubborn, angry, trusting, sensitive, make friends for life... just awesome little creatures.

Their needs are hardly ever respected. It's really sad, they are actually quite special and sensitive, and have a very sensitive digestive system. Yet they are often regarded as low maintenance pets for children. It's all because of how cute and cuddly they look but they DO NOT want to be cuddled, if it was for them, we would leave them in peace and just enjoy watching them. One of the most underrated and misunderstood animal indeed.

To clarify, certain populations eat them, and I've had cuy chactado, fried guinea pig when visiting those places. But I would never eat somebody's pet!

I used to have guinea pigs. I would like to have one, but I'm afraid my cats would hurt them.

I love how they pop when they get excited, especially the young ones. Also if you don’t breed a female by, like, six months to a year, she will close up and can’t have babies. My teenager and I raised them after we fostered two from a animal shelter. Then we bought a young one from a show and my daughter was in love. She is 24 now and still talked about her red rex named Reba. (Rex: curly fur!)

    Unexpectedly Adorable Armor

Echidna walking on sandy ground with dry branches, one of the animals that don’t get the recognition they deserve. The porcupine. I like them and find them interesting, but they smell like stale death. Just any I've been near smell horrible and carry a cloud around them. It's entirely possible my experience is an outlier; I've only encountered them a few times, so I could be misled by a narrow sample. But the smell was assaulting.

I had a school friend whose family kept a pet porcupine. She was very social and family-oriented, and didn't have a bad smell at all. Her name was Sally. We petted her frequently in the direction of her quills. She loved it, and we loved her!

We have porcupines around here. They are cute. They really only just want to mind their own business. I feel bad that so many lose their lives in the road.

    Crosswalk Chronicles

Aerial view of crowds crossing a busy zebra crosswalk, illustrating diversity similar to animals that lack recognition. Humans, I see a lot of people (especially on Reddit) that seem to be misanthropes who hate their own species and each other, its a shame really. I wish people showed the same love that they have for other animals towards humans instead of constant hatred towards each other, it would really make the world a better place.

The problem with that is that there are too many of us on this planet. So many that it is already a catastrophe.

One is NOT misanthropes by trying to protect wildlife and animals. Humans are part of this planet, yet it seems like everything has to go for humans and their (sometimes) very luxurious way of living. Protecting animals is protecting human life as wel.

I agree. If we break nature, we die. Nature is where our air comes from. Simplest way I can put it.

I agree with your sentiment... only problem is that our societies harbour some truly evil individuals who are totally a minority, but they ruin life for almost every living being on the planet, through the quest for more! More money, more natural resources, their greed has no boundaries, they spoil everything. You all know the kind of people I'm talking about, Putin, Trump, Musk, Bezos, they want to own the world. Greed is humanity's biggest sickness.

    Busy Building Bosses

Close-up of small ants on decaying wood, highlighting animals that don't get the recognition they deserve. The termite. They are fascinating. They know when it's going to rain. The termites have a caste system. The soldiers will boot out the aeletes only when it will rain within 24 hours. Aeletes are winged reproductives; they will fly out of the nest and try to start a new one. They look like the tie fighters in Star Wars: four fixed wings like a biplane. They are harmless; you will see them in the evening with low wind, about 70% humidity and 30 degrees Centigrade. [world's American, I know. I wasn't brought up with Fahrenheit] That's also a survival tip. If you see the winged reproductives flying then it's going to rain soon. Go to higher ground, prepare to collect rain etc. There are many different kinds of termites. Many have not yet been discovered. Some are similar to cockroaches in the way they lay eggs; the Giant Northern Australian termite. Others use parthenogenesis to reproduce. For instance the French Guianan termite.

Cicada. It looks scary, sounds scary, especially when it flaps it's wings, sometimes it's big, but it's actually harmless.

Their sound gives me headaches, and i always associate their sound with being miserably hot. They do have an interesting life cycle and i always loved their shed skins. Fun to study, not fun to hear, especially when multiple cicadas start getting a bit out of sync and the sound waves clash. It hurts and triggers my tinnitus.

Cicadas are cute! Once when I went to my grandmothers house there were a ton of them out and I grabbed like fifteen and stuck them to my sweatshirt 😂
