Life is full of hard truths, but sometimes it takes a while to discover them. Kids believe in the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus, but it’s inevitable that these fantasies will come crashing down once they get older.

Someone asked the internet, “What’s the adult equivalent of realizing that Santa Claus doesn’t exist?” and netizens were only too happy to share their lessons about the harsh realities of adulting. Here’s our pick of some of the best answers.

If you have ever been homeless and sleeping on cardboard boxes in the winter, you will know this is 100% true. Money is warmth, food, security, more clothes than the ones you are standing up in and showers. Being rich is no long needing to constantly worry that one day it could all be taken away

I've been/lived in homeless women shelters and completely agree. I only once spent one night sleeping rough in little wooded area in the city, I hid as best as I could. I couldn't get to the shelter in time. Luckily I had a jacket that was padded and warm. Now? I've my scrappy flat that needs repainting, a few repairs done but you know what? It's mine. My Home with a capital H... I've even got a washing machine!!! I only mention the washing machine because I've currently a load of laundry that needs to get out of it! 😄

For the 3,574,301th time. Money can buy physical security. It's difficult, but not impossible to be happy without food and shelter security. However, if you have food and shelter security, having more money will not make you happier. Money does not provide happiness, but can make happiness possible.

Money would legit solve all of my current problems, which in turn would make me happier. Plus, money equals being able to travel, which would make me extremely happy.

My son applied to an estimated 400 job listing when he was close to graduating college. Only one company asked for his GPA because they had some special program he was applying to large corporations and banks. He tells college kids to just get a degree. That is all that matters.

I disagree, they mean nothing to anyone NOT working for the grade once you leave school. I will always be proud of graduating college with a 3.99 GPA. I don't expect people to come pat me on the back about it 20 years after I graduate but I am proud because I worked very hard to be better and more knowledgeable every semester. I haven't thought about my grades in a couple of decades till just now. I'm still proud of that 3.99 GPA too.

Retired teacher here, and disagree mildly: overall the grades themselves don't mean *much*, but they do prove how much you made an effort, and how much you and your parents valued education. In elementary school you are learning to read; in middle school, you are reading to learn; in high school and beyond, you are learning to learn. Let's hope you had at least one good teacher, if not more, who sparked an interest in learning for its own sake. Grades show effort and stick-to-it-iveness.

Not necessarily. As I commented above, I had severe clinical depression all through high school and into my early 20's. The fact that I graduated was an accomplishment in and of itself. I got C's across the board so certainly not terrible but definitely not reflective of what I'm capable of now.

BZZZZZT. Wrong Answer. Many federal jobs will score you (which affects your employment chances and beginning salary) based on your college GPA. Colleges will accept you based on your high school GPA, and the college that you attend (and whether you attend colleges) can determine your chances of employment and your starting salary. Your middle school grades determine your placement in high school, which can affect your college admissions.

Don't I know it! I thought 2024 was going to be my year, but damn was I mistaken! 2024 sucked!

Transitioning into adulthood brings with it a series of realizations that can be both challenging and enlightening. Despite our best efforts, facts don't always align with our expectations. Adulthood also introduces nuanced choices, each carrying potential long-term consequences and often involving trade-offs.

Adulting properly means ongoing learning and adaptation. The skills and knowledge that brought you success in the past might not cut it for future challenges, so a commitment to personal and professional growth is of critical importance. Along the way you’re bound to have to make some sacrifices, but that’s called growing up.

Forming and maintaining friendships as an adult are harder too. Unlike the spontaneous connections of youth, adult friendships often need to be scheduled and nurtured amidst busy lives. This is when you discover that some friendships just weren’t meant to last the test of time, while others can survive anything life throws at them.

    - There is no justice in the universe. Terrible people will profit from terrible things, compound wealth, and live to a ripe old age without ever facing accountability. Good people will struggle every day until they die.

If all Bad People lived well, and all Good People suffered, that would indicate that there IS Order In The Universe. All that it would mean is that we don't like the rules. However, many good people live long and happy lives, while many evil people suffer and die young and/or in horrible ways. In fact, people who consider themselves good are happier. Bottom line, the universe doesn't have ethics and morals, and you shouldn't expect it to follow your ethics and morals, whatever those may be. The Universe won't do the opposite either.

If you’re struggling to face up to the harsh realities of life as an adult, you might find comfort in Stoicism, an ancient Greek philosophy that emphasizes the development of self-control, virtue, and rational thinking to achieve inner peace and resilience. Founded in the early 3rd century BC, it teaches that while we cannot control external events, we can control our responses to them, thereby cultivating tranquility and equanimity.

The key principles of Stoicism include focusing on what you can control, practicing the four cardinal virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance, and accepting fate, or embracing events as they happen. Incorporating Stoic practices into your daily life can lead to personal growth and a more balanced perspective, which is never a bad thing.

Define each group. What income makes a person a "Have" versus a "Have Not"? Since, for most people "Haves" = "people with more than me", while "Have Nots" = "people with the same as me or less", the terms are, once again, made up, usually by middle class kids who think that they are "rebellious".

College, outside of medicine and engineering is a scam. Why someone needs a $250k degree in Architecture or dead languages is beyond insulting to the commoner. Especially when architects make ugly things compared to the classics and the dead languages don't really add to society.

Reason I purchased my home is because as I age, I wouldn't be able to afford rent in California. My mortgage payment is probably 4 times LESS than average rent. I also wanted to invest so in case I had to go into a care facility, I could sell my home and pay for that rather than being in a government run facility.

The short answer is that Social Security is an insurance plan, not a retirement plan. However, it can happen in a way. My dad died before he collected anything, but our mother received a monthly payment on behalf of his five children based on his contributions until each reached the age of 18.

I don't think anyone is really confused about that, no matter what the masses would like to believe. The whole idea is to "encourage" american companies to invest in domestic infrastructure....to bring back american manufacturing, and create american jobs, and to...basically force consumers to support those domestic operations. Are tariffs going to prevent Americans from being able to buy all the things they want? Absolutely! Which will negatively impact corporations bottom line, which will force them into domestic investment, which will create new jobs, which will improve the economy....and on and on and on. Ya know...so long as Americans can actually refrain from buying the overpriced stuff long enough to make the corporations wallets hurt.

So true, you're only saving the amount of tax you would would have paid on the money you paid in interest. Until the tax rate is 100%, you still come out with more cash in hand by not paying the interest. That doesn't mean it's bad to take out a mortgage, there are many other financial benefits to owning a home. (There are financial risks to owning a home too, you pays your money, you takes your chances.)
