Woman Born Without Most Of Her Brain Turns 20, Family Speaks Out And It Sparks A Heated Debate
Nobody expected Alex Simpson to live past her fourth or fifth birthday.
But against all odds, the young Nebraska woman who was born without most of her brain celebrated her 20th birthday in the company of her loved ones.
“Miracles still happen,” her family said, proudly sharing her story with the world.

Alex Simpson was born to an Omaha family on November 4, 2005.
- Nobody expected Alex Simpson to live past her fourth or fifth birthday.
- But against all odds, the young Nebraska woman celebrated her 20th birthday with her loved ones.
- She was only a couple of months old when her parents were told that parts of her brain were missing.
Her parents, Lorena and Shawn Simpson, still remember the day the doctor had a life-changing conversation with them about their little girl.
“Doctor Davey came in with his nurses and said, ‘You guys need to sit down. This is pretty serious,’” the parents recalled.

The family was told their daughter was born with hydranencephaly, a rare condition in which the brain’s cerebral hemispheres are missing.
One in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 pregnancies are affected by hydranencephaly, and most babies with this condition pass away before their first birthday, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

About two months after Alex’s birth, Lorena and Shawn were told by doctors that a good portion of her brain was missing.
“[Hydranencephaly] means that her brain is not there,” Shawn told KETV this month. “Technically, she has about half the size of my pinky finger of her cerebellum in the back part of her brain, but that’s all that’s there.”

After doctors initially predicted that Alex wouldn’t live for more than a few months, Lorena and Shawn spent the first six months thinking she could pass away at any moment.
“Those six months, every day and night thinking, ‘This is the day, today will be the day,’” Lorena previously told KETV.
To everyone’s surprise, Alex did make it to her first birthday.

With time, the couple learned to take things one day at a time, even as doctors said she wouldn’t make it past her fourth or fifth birthday. But Alex did. And then came her sixth, her tenth, her fifteenth, and, most recently, her twentieth birthday, which the family celebrated on November 4 this year.
Shawn and Lorena both believe it was “love” that helped Alex live way past what doctors expected.

“Twenty years ago, we were scared, but faith, I think, is really what kept us alive,” the father told the outlet this month.
“She’s a fighter,” added Lorena.
Alex’s brain was missing the parts responsible for seeing and hearing, but her family believes she can recognize their presence and pick up on their moods.
“You can see that when I went up there and talked to her a little bit ago, she was looking for me,” Shawn told the outlet this month.

Alex is an older sister to 14-year-old brother SJ.
“When people ask about my family, the first thing I start with is Alex, my disabled sister,” the teen told the outlet.
SJ also believes Alex can sense when they are around her and possibly even know how they are feeling.
“Say somebody’s stressed around her — nothing will even happen — it could be completely silent, but Alex will know. She’ll feel something,” said the younger brother.

Alex has grown calmer and healthier over the years.
Back when Alex was 10 years old, the Simpsons couple gave an interview and spoke about how she was able to maintain some awareness about her surroundings and the people around her.
“She knows her mom and dad, her little brother,” her father said at the time. “She knows when bad things are going on; she will cry or have a sad face.”

Her family expressed how much they are in love with the person Alex is.
“I would not take Alex any other way,” Shawn told KETV in 2016. “We have learned to love her the way she is. She has blessed our family so much.”
“A true miracle and God bless her with another year of life,” one commented online

Those poll options are even more ridiculous than some of the comments on the YT vid. There are worse things than dying - and living like that is my worst nightmare.
Agreed. Pull the plug and let me go with dignity
Load More Replies...I agree with that last comment. She's alive but she's not living. She's a human doll for her parents to dress up and show off on TV saying they "believe" she has some sort of awareness. Believing in something doesn't make it real, except for crazy religious people who breathe hypocrisy: their almighty God created this poor girl in a way that she wouldn't live longer than a few months, but since they disagreed, they decided to go against their God's will and use medicine to keep her alive.
The problem is though that hydranencephaly doesn't automatically mean they will die in the first year, and does not mean they need to be on life support. Usually the baby won't survive, but they can go ok to live for years. So once the baby is born, while their quality of life and awareness can be debatable, they are actively living. Without being on life support that the parents could "pull the plug" on, they would either have to actively do something to k**l her, or neglect her to the point that infection etc takes hold.

Load More Replies...I feel so terrible for that whole family. Mostly for Alex, but also for the rest of them. It must be hard, and to get through it, they need to take joy from little things. People getting angry at them are callous and ignorant. Alex isn't the same as someone who is brain dead. Then, a person is technically already dead, so stopping medical care is easy. Alex is a live. She may have decreased ability to feel, think, and act, but she is alive. So legally, stopping care would be considered m****r and/or neglect. In whatever awareness she is capable of, she would suffer in a way brain dead people would not. It's a thorny issue. It goes beyond even debates about doctor-assisted s*****e because Alex can't chose. Through history, people have m******d those with disabilities. Some as extreme as this, and some not. Where do you draw the line? Who gets to decide who is "too disabled"? I would never want to live like this or watch a loved one live like this, but I also couldn't decide for the law
Thanks for writing this out! I srarted to get angry with all this comments... they don't understand the situation but are quick to decide how it should be handled

Exactly! She's not brain dead. It's not as simple as turning off the machine. It would be illegal to do anything that would cause her to die. And the headlines would basically be, "Parents k**l disabled child." Because even if she has very little awareness or independent agency, she is alive. Ceasing care would be consideres m****r, and she would suffer as she was dying.
Load More Replies...Medical intervention should NOT be used to keep a baby alive at any cost... I also don't believe in unnecessarily keeping someone at their end of life alive at any cost, especially if the person is ready/wanting to slip this mortal coil. Quality of life should be THE determining factor imho.
No one person should determine that. That led to massive executions of the disabled. More than once. They called it eugenics.

I don't know what your cousin's brother has. But I do know it has nothing to do with "swallowing uterus water." Fetuses swallow amniotic fluid all the time and it is not harmful to them.

How is she forced to live? She is obviously breathing on her own. The only way to end her life would be to actively k*ll her or to withhold nutrition and care wich is illegal in most parts of the world and very inhuman. They had no choice and maybe try to cope with this sh*tty situation with religion....
Load More Replies...There is more in life than just intellect, or the ability to think or reason. We have senses, feelings, love, touch, exchange of positive energy and other ways to feel connected to each other. The lives of severely disabled people are very difficult, but that does not make them any less valuable than ours. They too can be perfectly happy in their own world. If her family takes good care of her and loves her, Alex will have a good life.
Alex likely cannot even have an understanding of being a person. The way it is described, she has a brain stem, which basically just tells her body to function...
Load More Replies...I do not think it is for someone to judge what they do not know. This condition is not the same as someone who once was cognizant and lost that ability. For example, a person who is born deaf or blind and has never known any differently does not feel the loss like someone who loses the sense of hearing or sight. There is nothing to indicate this woman is in pain or suffering. She is enveloped in a loving and caring family, who cherish her for who she is.
Why are they keeping her body alive??? Just let her go. How can they even afford it under the US healthcare system?
Why does the scream locked in syndrome to me? The best case scenario seems to be she is really unaware of her situation and is being kept alive for no point and a huge waste of medical resources, the worst case scenario I can think of is she is literally being tortured every day because she is aware of what’s happening.
She is most likely not aware of what's happening, at least not in the way you mean. All she has is a bit of her cerebellum, which is allowing her to breath and swallow.
