Cheating, however abhorrent it may seem, is quite prevalent. Research shows that 34% of men and 24% of women admit to cheating in a past relationship. But how do you prove you’re not cheating when your sibling accuses you of betraying them with their partner?

That happened to this young woman who found herself having to come up with evidence that she didn’t sleep with her sister’s boyfriend. After finding out they were in the same hotel at the same time, the sister became convinced that they had cheated. Even when the woman presented her with the receipts that she didn’t, the sister still didn’t believe her, even turning their parents against her.

These accusations might be the sister’s jealousy issues acting up, projecting what she fears most

This recent story by Redditor u/Minute-Memory-6253 is quite a doozy. It’s a tale of sibling rivalry, infidelity, trust issues, and coincidences that resembles a soap opera more than real life. However, it’s just one of many examples that coincidences actually happen and that a lack of trust between partners and family members can ruin lives.

We as readers don’t know much of the context behind the relationship between the two sisters. Why would the older sister automatically assume her fiancé and sister had cheated before even hearing her side? What’s more, isn’t there an ounce of trust between the sisters, especially when there is no actual proof of the infidelity?

If their relationship has always been strained, this might be a clue. If the sister felt like OP was the favorite child growing up, she might have resentment and feel jealous of their parents’ love. Perhaps she even felt jealous that her sister would strike up conversations with her fiancé about his interests.

Experts say that jealousy is about perceived threats. A jealous person acts on their fears, insecurities, and trust issues, often projecting what they fear the most onto other people. It’s possible that her sister getting along with her fiancé well triggered insecurities from their childhood when their parents would also give her more attention.

Another possibility is that in such an emotional state, the sister is simply looking for a scapegoat in trying to make sense of how her fiancé could’ve betrayed her like he did. The parents are right that she needs emotional support, but not at the expense of their other daughter and her reputation.

When people are wrongfully accused, they tend to lose confidence, experience isolation, and even insomnia

When a family conflict happens, people tend to take sides. In this case, the parents seem to side with the older sister, even though they probably don’t believe their other daughter has transgressed. What OP seems to be concerned with most now is preserving her reputation in her extended family. After all, it’s her identity and self-worth that are on the line.

False accusations can seriously mess with a person’s sense of self. Research shows that individuals who have been wrongfully accused of crimes or convicted can experience permanent changes in their personality. People become anxious, hyper-vigilant, antagonistic, and lose confidence in themselves.

Wrongfully convicted people also report being shunned from communities, resulting in isolation and strained relationships. The OP is also gradually experiencing something similar. Her parents are refusing to take her side; as a result, she has decided to go low-contact with them. Even her relationship with her boyfriend is suffering, as he does not seem to trust her 100%.

Wrongful accusations cause a person’s psychological and physical health to deteriorate, too. Many wrongfully accused individuals report dealing with depression, anxiety, and even PTSD. Some can’t even get a good night’s sleep as they deal with disrupted sleep, insomnia, or nightmares.

While the OP hasn’t been convicted in any court of law, her sister’s accusations are impacting her personal life and mental health immensely. While she might salvage her relationships with her boyfriend and parents, it’s hard to imagine how the two sisters would move on from a falling-out like this.

Hi there, fellow pandas! As a person (over)educated both in social sciences and literature, I'm most interested in how we connect and behave online (and sometimes in real life too.) The human experience is weird, so I try my best to put its peculiarities in writing. As a person who grew up chronically online, I now try to marry two sides of myself: the one who knows too much about MySpace, and the one who can't settle and needs to see every corner of the world.

It was not that long. Announcing that you don't have the ability to read more than a page of text is not a flex. And if you were bored just move on quietly
