That's what happens in my Hometown!! I have had bears at back doors and moose licking swings. It becomes a way of life sometimes. We literally learn what to do when we see a moose or bear.

Hello, Do you have time for me to tell you about ..........?

View more comments

This list really draws you in, doesn't it? The difficulty to click away, I think, comes from our curiosity. Why wouldn't you like to see the test track Fiat had on its rooftop? Or an oil tanker raising its anchor, discovering it has hooked an unexploded torpedo? The craving to know and understand is the driving force behind our development as individuals and even our success as a species.

In fact, if infants weren't curious, they'd never learn anything. Hundreds of studies show they prefer novelty. A classic 1964 study, for example, showed that infants between 2 months and 6 months old grew less and less interested in a complex visual pattern the more they looked at it. Another study, published in 1983, revealed that once babies got used to familiar toys, they preferred new ones, a scenario that caregivers are probably very familiar with.

I bet you didn't use distilled water, but tap water... Venus fly traps are otherwise fairly easy to keep (mine flowers nicely every year and has separated into several individuals) , but they are highly sensitive to lime. Built-up of lime in the soil is a death sentence.

There's also something psychologists call epistemic curiosity. It's about seeking knowledge and eliminating uncertainty. Epistemic curiosity emerges later in life and might require complex language.

Agustín Fuentes, a professor of anthropology at Princeton University, believes this form of curiosity has set humans — and probably all members of the genus Homo — apart from other animals and paved the way for us to populate nearly every corner of the world, inventing technologies from hand axes to smart phones.

"Humans, in our distinctive lineage, went beyond simply tweaking nature to imagining and inventing whole new possibilities that emerge from that kind of curiosity," Fuentes told Live Science

But curiosity comes with a cost. Just think about babies who are perfectly proficient crawlers. Even though they get around, they still decide to try walking. Of course, there's more to see and do when they stand upright. But this milestone comes at a cost: a study of 12- to 19-month-olds learning how to walk documented that these children fell down seventeen times per hour. However, this didn't stop them.

I guess, this list has a price as well. You can miss your stop if you stare at the screen for too long and forget you're on a bus. Or your boss can walk in on you and see that you choose to browse the Internet instead of finishing those reports. If you're not working remotely, of course. Anyway, beware, you've been warned!

It's even more creepy: It is called Sokushinbutsu and refers to the practice of Buddhist monks observing asceticism to the point of death and entering mummification while alive.

    Kate Koppen
    Community Member
5 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Not exactly. Sokusinbutsu is a very special practice from certain areas of Japan, the monks dry themselves old alive and are put into an underground chamber until gone, later their bodies are retrieved and enshrined. That is different from the Vietnamese and southern Chinese tradition of Buddhist mummies, people would go to caves usually to use their climate for mummification. Their remains were then either lacquered or put into clay and then decorated, like in this case.

Even crazier is the preparation these monks did beforehand. While they were still alive they would start a diet that is basically meant to start self mummification. It could take 10 years and was meant to reduce moisture and body fat so the body would not putrefy. They even drank a poisonous sap that turned to laquer. Then they were buried. While still alive! They sang until... You know, and then the breathing tube in the tomb was removed and left for 3 years and then opened. If the body had mummified it was removed and venerated. They were called "Living Buddhas." https://www.history.com/news/ct-scan-reveals-mummified-monk-inside-ancient-buddha-statue

Interesting information, but that's not the real meaning of Living Buddha. Some people become buddhas in their lifetime... surrendering fully into the inner being beyond identification with the personal body/mind. It happens more often than one might think.

This is likely the practice of self-mummification (sokushinbutsu) that was practiced by some rather esoteric Buddhist sects in Japan around the 11th century. It is a fascinating (and slightly disturbing) process to read about: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/sokushinbutsu

No it is not. Sokushinbutsu is a very special tradition unique to Japan but other areas had their own Buddhist mummies, you find many e.g. in Vietnam.

This is done in archaeology to get more information about what it is made of, especially if you assume multiple material use or hollowness or you hear something rattle inside ;) You cannot just smash an invaluable historical piece with a hammer.

Really. I also don't think that was accidental. And there's no way that she shot him in the head only once, just look at that x-ray, he was shot multiple times. And we surely can't believe each of those times was accidental.

It made every Australian cry. So much destruction and death. Everytime the tv was on at work, we would all just stand there, hold each other and cry. Australia pulled together and helped where we could. Big shout out to all the Aussies who donated to families, wildlife organisations, and RFS. We were all in this together more than corona.

i somewhere read that the bird died a natural death. the muscels in the claws are most relaxed in this position (= when a bird sleeps it doesn't have to strain the muscles to hold the position but to lose the claws it does) and when other animals eat the body or it decays this is what remains.

Okay here is how this happened. Firstly, bird claws work opposite of the human hand. Instead of having to consciously grip onto something (like a hand would), avian feet automatically clench onto branches and effort is used to release the grip. This means the bird can sleep on a branch without accidentally falling off. But if it DIES while sitting on a branch... Well... The feet stay anchored along with the body, which either decays and falls apart or (in most cases) other opportunistic eaters come along and predate the rest of the carrion... Leaving only the inedible tootsies left.

It might look like that, but that’s not what’s happening here. This is the Eagle Creek fire of 2017 and the golf course is in Washington, on the other side of the Columbia River. I live nearby. It’s certainly not a wealthy area whatsoever. The fire was horrible, but we had to go on with our days while it burned. So yes, the picture looks weird, but is not as bad as it seems. I have pictures of my kids at soccer practice with this same fire in the background. It was a strange time.

Now, imagine a farmer in the early years of the first millennium plowing a field and coming across the skeleton of an extinct animal like this, and calling the local squire and priest (or the equivalent educated and powerful individuals in their culture) to examine it and come up with some kind of explanation for it. I may have gotten the time period wrong but, regardless, could it be possible that this type of scenario is part of the origin of the dragon myth?

Always. Cover. Your. Glass. Even if not a spider, other little buggies can fly or crawl into your water, like ants, gnats, or flies. I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a kid (yep, accidentally chugged an unidentified bug with my water). From now on, instead of a glass, use a water bottle with a lid.

Speed. It's a skateboard-rink. When you fall down and slide along the wood on your knee, there's a lot of speed and force involved. Also, the wood had to be very tough to withstand the skates. Instead of breaking off, it just splintered along the ... uh, fault lines? of the wood until it got too much and break off anyway.

Isn’t this illegal? If not, it should be. Employers already violate employees’ privacy enough by doing stuff like nosing around their social media accounts. When you’re not on the clock, your life should be nobody’s business but your own, as long as everyone is a consenting adult (unless you’re doing something illegal, which is up to the police, not your boss).

These are knitted with lots of open spaces and the tree has lots of air flow. You can see the openings even in this small photo.. Bugs can go in and out. Get a sense of humor. Please don't say it's a waste of yarn because someone somewhere is cold. This gives a lot of people joy.

I used to be a Park Ranger, and these things were such a nuisance! Yes, it’s holds moisture against the bark, especially after it soaks up rain! And when it’s left there, rain soaked and moldy, it weighs on the tree, breaking off branches. Broken branches allow fungus and insect infestation easy access. But hey, we’re the fun police when we ask people to not do it, or to do it to lampposts or other non-living structures instead. Or you know, knit blankets or sweaters for the homeless vets (and non-vets!) living in our parks?

Also wouldn't work for anyone who isn't within some 10cm plus or minus of what they considered "average". I wonder if the remaining pool would be large enough to make this still profitable, especially considering that many would opt out before even trying.

Considering how few of us might look so closely -- or have that astute of vision -- at a gelcap prior to consumption, I have to wonder just how many creepy critters are ingested in this manner. I'll stick to the solid tabs and caplets.

Sadly, I think the poor little guy is dead in the photograph. Tragically, many animals that have deformities have a much lower rate of survival (especially in the wild) as they are easy targets for predators and are much more susceptible to disease and the elements.
