Games and education are like water and oil – they hardly mix, though many try. We have created an action game that blends education and entertainment seamlessly, providing as much fun as a game should. Numbala trains mathematical competence without the player even noticing!
Numbala is a sophisticated cognitive training tool disguised as a game. While it may look like a side scrolling space shooter, it is an advanced way to train the mental numeric axis. When we first come into contact with numbers, our minds subconsciously organize them in space and in relation to each other. This becomes the very foundation off all further understanding of arithmetics. Mental numeric axis can be trained and the motion you perform with your finger while playing the game strengthens the effect.
The game has been developed in cooperation with neuroscientists of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland and tested on over one hundred children. They have shown a reduction in response time and an increase in correctness in estimation on the numerical axis, when given a post-test after playing the game.
To a child, however, Numbala is a beautiful side scrolling adventure, in which they roam the galactic islands in search of the mysterious cosmic whale. The educational effect occurs subconsciously, which isn’t something that many educational game can boast about. The player instead focuses on collecting coins, gathering power-ups and shooting obstacles. And of course, defeating that mean space corsair!

Nice looking game but not the first space shooter. The Math Blaster series of games which started in the early 1990s. In the first Math Blaster game, you would solve basic problems to build energy to blast space junk.
