Religion has a very different place in people’s lives than barely half a century ago. It used to be commonplace to go to church every Sunday and barely a soul grumbled about it. But nowadays, more and more individuals are acting like Homer Simpson and wondering if it wouldn’t be better to sleep in and stay toasty in bed.
Well, one place that certainly knows how to get the attention of both the faithful and non-believers and make them laugh and think, is Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church in New York. It uses hilarious (and sometimes deep) signs to make comments about religion and the world.
We’ve collected some of the best signs from Wantagh Church, so upvote the ones you enjoyed reading and share ‘em with your pals if you think they’re in need of a chuckle or two. Have you seen any amusing church signs, dear Pandas? What do you think the positive aspects of faith are? Share your opinions with us down below.
In an interview with Bored Panda, Pastor Ron Garner of the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church explained the inspiration for the witty signs and talked about the role of religion in the 21st century.
“Our church is located on a very busy street in Wantagh. I want to convey to the public that Christianity doesn't have to be staid. I also want to convey to passersby that I believe people who follow Jesus are not called to be apolitical but are called to take social justice issues seriously. We are a small congregation but we have new members who came because of our signs.”

How reassuring to know I'm not off to hell. I'm a kind atheist who likes to treat others as I'd wish to be treated, believes we should live and let live; and be responsible custodians of the planet. Not some bible nazi who judges the rest of the world on their own narrow, prejudice and intolerant views.
Read it again. We don't get to decide when we get our invitation. If he calls and you decline too many times and choose to do evil you can become reprabate and not be invited ever again.
Load More Replies...why do people need gods to treat others with respect? As an atheist, I treat people with respect. It worries me that so many billions of people need an imaginary friend to tell them not to kill or steal. It comes naturally to me
I replied, commented many times, the posts are gone. Why BP????
Load More Replies...Some of the most vile and meanest people I have met in my life, were very religious. If you did not believe in their God or go to their church, they would curse you and say you are going to hell.
This is exactly what I mean when I say people don't worship God, they love so much, they PLAY God.
Load More Replies...Too many wonderful messages to comment on, so a post at the top will do. I am an atheist. No regrets, no apologies. It's very much an educated and informed opinion. I fluctuate from respecting the rights of all to practice religion, to seeing how much hatred and intolerance it breeds that I have no respect at all for it. But this church needs calling out and commending for the healthy, wholesome and equitable views it holds, irrespective of whether or not you believe in a god. This should just be the way community and society function. So sad that this is not the case. But hats off to a church that would make me walk through the door and say, "keep up the good work. Thank you!"
Mark Fuller, do you think that these signs in a way are all just commercials? To me it seems to be propaganda getting more people away from science and trying to indoctrinate them into detrimental superstition. Yeah, it’s hopey, peacey. But, it’s all in service of harmful b.s. Why can’t there be more billboards like this celebrating science and all of its benefits (such as diseases scientists have cured)?
Load More Replies...For too many people "Christianity" is just a good word to hide behind. They can avoid all responsibility for what they say and do if God approves of them.
I like to point out when religious people give me gruff for being agnostic, that I am good for no no other reason than to be good and you are a good person because you believe you will be rewarded in the afterlife.

Cannot upvote this more! If you believe in a religion, you can't just ignore it when you want to. i hope ppl that just "participate" in being a christian but dont actually belive it with all their heart can see this post
It's called hypocrisy, very common; most people want just to look good, not actually be good.
Load More Replies...Simple. Homeless man on Monday don't provide tax deductions. So helping them becomes socialism and this is not a commie land. This is America, if they want help they should pull them self up with their boot straps.---------------- That's what a good god fearing, family value, pro life, gun loving, patriotic christian would say.
I was so close to getting mad at you until I realized you were being sarcastic.
Load More Replies...A lot of Christians are big hypocrites. I am a Christian, but I don't feel the need to act self righteous all the time. I work in a pizza restaurant and every Sunday the people who just left church come in to "fellowship". They usually come in the biggest numbers, make the biggest messes, and leave zero tip for our hardworking cashiers.
I agree with you Deanna......and they believe that it's a sin working on Sunday but come to your place of work, making others work on Sunday.
Load More Replies...The city where we used to live had an "overflow" shelter for the homeless; it was organized by the Council of Churches and each religious institution took care of the homeless who weren't able to get into the regular homeless shelter. My husband and I were the captains of ours: the only synagogue among all of the Christian churches. Every overflow shelter had two weeks to cover each winter, and could choose when this was. I was the one who refused to follow the churches' lead and made every guest have to sign in by name, NOT number. (We Jews are kinda sensitive about the whole "dehumanization" thing, and referring to people by numbers, like the Nazis did.) The thing that bothered me the most, however, was that despite the fact that every house of worship had our guests stay in social halls and the like on premises, NOT ONE SINGLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH WOULD DO THIS OVER CHRISTMAS. We always took the dates that weren't covered by anyone else... which meant we ALWAYS got Christmas. WTF?
Got cut off, sorry. Isn't a HUGE part of the Christmas Story about how nobody would take in Mary and Joseph? Couldn't ANY of those people see the irony about not hosting our city's homeless over Christmas? No, the smell wasn't pleasant, because these folks couldn't get showers on a dependable basis. Yes, it was noticeable in our sanctuary during services. Yet every single person was welcomed with open arms (literally) during services, because it was a way for them to come in out of the cold while the overflow shelter was closed or hosted elsewhere. Christmas. Where were the good Christians during this time? Not all are like that. We're very fortunate to know some very special, wonderful Christians, and are blessed to be able to call them friends. But it was the hypocrisy of this "Council of Churches" that angered me so much, and made me hurt for our guests. This sign is wonderful, and I wish it were everywhere. People need help sometimes. So help. Help thy neighbors.

Anyone who has ever read the bible knows this, yet there's so many so called Christians who have never even opened the book and yet they still spew hate in its name
I like it how they support the feelings of gay people and understand how they are treated differently, that is what churches are mostly about, understanding other people.
The thing to remember is not everyone who calls themselves Christians are actually Christians. Being showered in hatred is a big clue that you are dealing with a counterfeit.
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. The Bible isn’t transphobic or homophobic. Why are they?
This one is correct for sure a sin is a sin and if you believe the bible having sex out of wedlock is no different in gods eyes than being gay if you really believe the bible sexual immoralities are the same. I am sure there is a handful of people who are Christians who are pure of all sexual immoralities so people in glass house shouldn't throw stones
“I often wonder if religion does have a place in modern society,” mused Pastor Ron. “ I certainly believe that the church of our era has become irrelevant too many. I believe that the church has quit challenging people to live full lives and has become more interested in butts in pews.”
The Pastor continued: “Jesus was a radical Jewish rabbi who challenged followers to live in radically different ways. Although it may not increase Sunday morning attendance, as a Pastor I feel compelled to offer my congregation the challenge of radical discipleship. This requires a focus on issues of social justice that are often absent from the worship or mission of the church.”

What this church is doing is releasing tension through jokes that are supposed to bring people together in God - believers and non-believers, gay and straight. This joke is one of few ways to peacefully protect their right to be parents. And yet people still find the need to push something in the comments. Which proves that this church is on the right track, and there is still a long way to go.
I mean if you want to be technical here if you’re a saved Christian, don’t you then have 2 dads?
No. Because only your biological father would be real. Imaginary dads don’t count.

Why can’t the majority of all peoples understand and act upon it. Why do we even have this awful social injustice here in this time. You would think by now we would have fixed the problem. So all people’s are the same and deserve respect, kindness,Understanding no judgement. Even Love!
According to the Pastor, the Church has made itself ‘irrelevant’ in the West. “The US Church and all churches in the West have sacrificed a compelling message and mission for some vague promise of 'heaven' in some equally nebulous 'afterlife.' People aren't attracted to that message. They want meaning in the 'here and now.' As far of changing this situation I don't have an answer. I can only do what I think provides relevance and a dedication to mission.”
Have you ever heard of a church having an Instagram page? I haven’t before. Well, Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church has one and it’s got 60 followers. I’m willing to bet the church would be even more well-known if it uploaded pictures of its signs to its IG account. A good way to spread some smiles, don’t you think?
The church, founded in 1889, describes itself as a place of worship for believers coming from different Christian denominations. “The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church is an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ which renews and strengthens its commitment to advocate justice and equality for all people in all areas of society.”

Because women were property and had no rights. Most weren't even 'married' as it is understood today, because they were too poor to pay the religious fees to their place of worship. A man could have as many women as he could afford: concubines, who could literally be sold to another man if she proved too expensive.

We are now, in the West, living in societies that under the guise of democracy essentially have been taken over by the military-industrial complex, the so-called 'defense' industry. Before you tell me to come up with an alternative, let me suggest doing it the long way, by getting more involved with politics starting at the local level, and above all by informing yourselves more, and also better. Peaceful protest, letters to the politicians who represent you, in any way you can, raise your voices.
The god of the bible was certainly a warmonger. He was jealous, petty, and tribalistic. He was pleased by human and animal sacrifices. He was pleased when the warrior David brought him hundreds of bloody foreskins from the enemy. He even told one of his tirbes that I will be with you in battle, but because the enemy tribe had iron chariots, god and his tribe were defeated. Pretty clearly written by ancient men.
Ancient Testament is rather a history book (what historians may call a chronicle) than a faith book explaining Christians Virtues and describing God.

No. In the fictional tales jesus supposedly healed some lepers and some other people. But, why not cure leprosy? Science has largely cured the disease leprosy. Thank scientists! If this was truly an all-powerful god, then he could have cured leprosy. He could have cured all diseases across the universe (true universal healthcare). But, if god has the power to stop suffering (especially the suffering of children) and he refuses to, then he is evil!

MassHealth (Medicaid) used to be awful - 20 years ago I took care of such matters for my Dad, and they spent a lot of time threatening people with "We'll catch you if you try to commit fraud and you'll be fined and go to jail." It was a completely adversarial relationship with the client. Since then, in my experience, they've changed 180 degrees, and I'm finding them courteous, articulate and eager to actually help.

Marriage is also a civil contract. Religion took the ceremony over in the Middle Ages, along with everything else they could steal, but the fact of the matter is, it ain't legal unless it's filed civilly. Seriously, the churches should call their ceremonies something else.
But if churches really stuck by what they are supposed to believe they wouldn't marry non virgins gays or divorcees just saying to hate the messenger you cant cherry pick and it is a civil right but churches dont have to marry you if it goes against their religion.
That's why it isn't legal unless it's filed with city hall. And you can be legally married by a clerk there.

Poverty is a sin because the rich should be giving to the poor and making sure poverty doesn't exist. However, being poor isn't a sin because no one can help being poor, it's not their fault.

Such generalizations are unsupportable garbage. Plenty of poor people are that way because of irresponsible behavior. Plenty are not.
Being poor is not a sin,I agree...but,there is not much merit either..
No actually being rich is the sin, Matthew 19:24, “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.” Just saying.
That's what they meant by the statement, Lucy. That "poverty" is a social ill that exists because the rich are miserly and there's little aid for those who are poor.

God doesn’t love anyone because god(s) are fictional. The only thing that the god of the bible loved was himself. He was the epitome of the sin pride and vanity. He demanded constant worship. He demanded human and animal sacrifices. He demanded that you kill the entire neighboring village and their innocent livestock if even one person in that village worships another god. He was boastful, arrogant, wrathful, petty, misogynistic, jealous, genocidal, torturous, twisted, and evil. Why would you think god loves you? He has never hugged you. He has never shown up at your graduation or birthday party. Why does god love you, but he lets some children suffer and die in agonizing, tormenting, excruciating pain? Go to a children’s hospital and talk to the children with bone cancer. Why does god love you and not them? That’s just your ego. The god of the bible supposedly created hell, a place of eternal torture. That’s sickening. God supposedly flooded a world, killing every innocent baby, etc.
But, he'll burn you in hell if you disobey him. He doesn't sound loving at all. He was a tribalistic warmonger. He was pleased by human and animal sacrifices. He was pleased when David brought him hundreds of bloody foreskins. He killed 1st born Egyptian sons, many of which must have been babies and toddlers. Why does he love you and not them? He endorsed slavery. I would never love a being that created a place of eternal torture and you shouldn't either. If he truly loves you, why hasn't he ever hugged you? Shown up at your graduation? etc.
Because, as you said, "He" is fictional. Many religious folks are cheaters, liars, apathetic to suffering of others, especially animals, they torture, kill for pleasure, plunder and destroy, so they created God who will fix everything and gives them everlasting afterlife so they could do what they were doing on earth forever. A "nice" fairytale".
