“No Tip, No Trip”: Tipping Culture At Discussion Forefront Again After Delivery Driver’s Rant Goes Viral
We live in an amazing age. We can lay on our couches enjoying a film and order a pizza from the palm of our hands without having to call anyone, pull out a credit card or put on shoes. But the luxury of using food delivery apps does come at a cost. Aside from the delivery fee and high prices listed on the app, we must also remember to tip couriers accordingly.
If you refuse to tip, however, the app might still find a sneaky way of ensuring that your order is picked up. One experienced Uber Eats and DoorDash driver, Justin Ruiz, recently shared on TikTok how he believes platforms take advantage of their drivers, so below, you’ll find his full explanation, as well as some of the replies viewers left him.

This is how Uber Eats and DoorDash actually take advantage of their drivers. As we all know, everybody says it, no tip, no trip, but the way that these platforms get around it is they’ll send you a two to three-batch order and they will put together a tipper with a non-tipper because that’s the only way that they’re actually gonna get their food.

Everybody’s seen these videos on TikTok of a whole bunch of orders in Chipotle and McDonald’s and Burger King that are just sitting there for hours and hours and hours. Because all the drivers understand that if you’re not gonna value us as us bringing you your food, why the hell would we wanna pick up your food anyways?

If you cannot tip, just walk to the restaurant. It makes it a lot easier. You don’t have to use the microwave and you don’t need to complain. The only reason why you have to tip your delivery driver is because we are bringing you your food. It’s not the other way around. You are not giving us a job.

Food delivery apps have exploded in popularity in recent years
Prior to the pandemic, food delivery apps had long been popular, but they were seen by many as a luxury that was far too expensive to be worth it. Once COVID-19 hit, however, food delivery services became a godsend for many restaurants who just needed to stay afloat while they couldn’t allow dining in, and they allowed many of us who were stuck at home to enjoy cozy meals in that we didn’t have to prepare ourselves. And the companies offering these delivery services certainly saw the benefits of restaurants closing and patrons being quarantined at home. DoorDash, for example, saw its revenue rise from $885 million in 2019 to $2.88 billion in 2020. Meanwhile, Uber Eats also increased their revenue by a whopping 179% between 2019-2020.
Today, although we’re no longer quarantined and allowed to eat-in at restaurants as much as we please, food delivery services are still going strong. They’ve become a much more welcomed part of many patrons’ lives, as we quickly became accustomed to the convenience of ordering from home. According to Business of Apps, “China is the largest market for food delivery, with a market size of $42.5 billion in 2022.” And the entire food app industry is not expected to slow down any time soon, with an expected market size of $165 billion by 2029. The United States follows China with the second-largest food delivery revenue in the world, reaching $17.1 billion in 2022. However, the culture in the United States is particularly unique, and as we all know, tipping is incredibly important for drivers.

But despite how common these platforms have become, it’s still not easy for drivers to earn decent wages
The New York Times reports that Uber and DoorDash drivers in the United States typically earn about $3.50 per order, regardless of how large or small it is, as well as about $1 per mile that they drive. Uber Eats, however, only shows couriers up to $8 of a tip until they have completed the delivery, and several other factors, such as distance and bundling orders together can impact how much drivers earn.
One courier, Mr. Huang, who lives in Los Angeles, told the New York Times he works about 10 hours per day, seven days a week, and usually earns over $250 a day before expenses. But he notes that you can’t always expect great tips, even if the order took an extraordinary amount of effort. He recalls once spending two hours delivering a $2,500 order of tacos to a music studio, where he was rewarded with a tip of only $50. On another occasion, he delivered around $500 from the upscale grocery store Erewhon, only to be tipped $5.
While Mr. Huang says he understands why not everyone wants to tip, especially when there are so many people from different cultures living in Los Angeles, receiving decent tips is a huge incentive for drivers to pick up orders. According to Newsweek, couriers recommend tipping at least 18-20% on food orders, “to ensure your driver is well-compensated for their efforts.” One courier from Georgia told Newsweek, “Some nights I make good tips, well, good for me is over 30 dollars in tips. But a lot of slow nights I make 5 to 10 dollars for 7 to 10 deliveries. So yes, delivering food, no matter what it is, can really be a terrible way to live. Not getting a tip and having to drive 10 miles round trip really affects people.”

Tipping generously upon ordering can incentivize couriers to delivery orders promptly
Tipping culture may be particularly prevalent in the United States, but there’s no question that, no matter where you are, leaving a great tip will incentivize drivers to bring your pizza or sushi as fast as they can. And while some platforms allow patrons to save their tips until the food has already been delivered, Ridesharing Driver recommends that customers leave the full tip before getting their food. On DoorDash and Grubhub, for example, couriers actually can see the entire tip ahead of time, and will be more likely to prioritize your meal.

This is just me, my own opinion. In no way I feel like anyone needs to follow it. But personally, I think a few bucks to pay for gas is okay before service, it's after service that I question if I want to give them more. Regardless, they're still using time, wear and tear and gas. A dollar or two should still be considered for me. But again, literally just me.

American tip culture is insane! Employers should pay proper wages, and stop expecting customers - who are probably on bad wages too, to make up the difference. Our (UK) min wage: 'National Living Wage consists of an hourly rate of £10.42. Additionally, the rate for 21-22 year olds is £10.18, for 18-20 year olds £7.49 and for 16-17 year olds, £5.28' (which, btw we think sucks for teens). We are currently pushing for a min rate of £15 p.h., and some employers are paying that, so far.

So glad I'm not American. Here, order food, no tip, it's delivered within 20-40 mins perfectly. We also have seals on the bags so they can't be tampered with. I pay for delivery, that's good enough.

I am bemused, I am paying a person to take the food from the restaurant/fast food place to my door. Isn't it the person's job to deliver food? I don't tip the mail delivery people, couriers etc. What so different about food that means a tip is 'required'? I'm so glad tipping is not really a thing where I live.

I always tip, bit I gotta be honest, I'm getting pretty mad having to tip in advance and then getting my food way past the delivery window and it is pretty much inedible. If they have gone out of their way for something or come up to my hotel room etc (I'm in a wheelchair it's easier for me) I'll tip £1-2 but I know they are still getting paid without that tip. This whole tipping thing needs to end. Pay the delivery people a fair wage, and any tips that still show up get divided amongst them at the end of a quarter as a bonus. CLEARLY indicate the delivery price includes a tip, and any additional will be a bonus. People won't care if they were the type who did tip, and the ones that don't can get lost.

You go into town to buy a pair of shoes. You walk in a shop, have a look around, the assistant brings 4 pairs from the back for you to try. You spend half an hour trying them on, and you decide on a pair. The price is X. You walk to the counter, pay X... and then the assistant takes the shoes from your hand and throws them in the street. The thing that some people don't understand is we have to make a decision wether or not an order is going to be worth our time, gas and wear and tare on our vehicles. If it's not, we lose money, and many of us simply can't afford that. It sucks, and I wish it didn't have to be like that. We're just doing the best we can for ourselves to make a living.
Tipping a food driver before delivery makes as much sense as tipping a waiter before your meal is served.
As far as tipping goes, UberEATS gives you up to an hour to edit your tip, after receiving your order. So if your driver is s**t, you don't have to tip. They also offer drivers incentives to complete more orders so it kinda still makes taking those lower paying orders worth our time. Like, if we need to do 50 rides between Friday and Monday, we can get sometimes like an extra $100+ in bonuses. There are also boost incentives that they offer drivers during busy times. And they also have opportunities to sign up for an extra $2 a trip, usually more but $2 is the lowest I've seen.

They terminate driver contracts for LITERALLY NO REASON!! They aren't worth ordering from or driving for. On my UberEats app, I can change the tip after delivery, when the "rate your order" comes up. I don't do less than 15%, but I will raise it for exceptional service.
For food, I tip based on $ 10 an hour, that is 17 cents a minute. . For example, at a restaurant, I start timing when my order is taken, and stop when my check is delivered. If that's 30 minutes. I tip $5.10, regardless of the bill. I tip food delivery by the mile ($.50, double at peak traffic times.). IF I tip in jars on food counters, I tend to tip based on the same formula as restaurants. I do not tip based on precalculated tip screens, and always tip in cash.
Are you a customer or the damn Payroll department of the restaurant? I pay the food at the price listed. I don't want to bother about timing, mileage or percentages. I want the establishment I pay for my meal to properly compensate their workers. I want the company to which I pay a delivery fee to compensate their workers accordingly. I pay for a service at an agreed price, they should do their job and manage the economic side. If this means the gig economy is not sustainable, good riddance to the gig economy.

Hoping I don't get suspended for going waaay against the current here, but I'll never understand the blaming of the poor employee for the realities of the system. I understand it's ridiculous to people who didn't grow up in the US, but the absolute onslaught of comments on these types of articles about not tipping as a form of protest against a bad system always strikes me as disingenuous, since it seems the exploitative businesses conducting the objectionable practices are what should be targeted. Yet I've never once heard that someone is foregoing the products the exploitative business is selling - it's only the withholding of tips that is the form of protest. It's like this we (drivers) are risking our lives and our vehicles to bring your food so you don't have to risk your life or have free time etc.. Load More Replies... I just don't order delivery. I don't want to tip before I get my food. I've done it twice and both times, food was smashed or spilled... and paying a percentage is ridiculous. I am tipping at most $10 for an order. Since that isn't good enough, I will gladly pick it up myself.

I always tip, bit I gotta be honest, I'm getting pretty mad having to tip in advance and then getting my food way past the delivery window and it is pretty much inedible. Not to mention the extra fees! It's an extra $20-$50 just in (BS) fees alone! I typically just do pickup orders now because I will get my food faster and save cost
I always tip too, but the constant barrage of being told/threatened if I don't then I'm a pos who deserves to have their cold food thrown at their door. It makes me *not* want to tip. Or even use the service. And if enough people feel like me I mean.. that service isn't going to keep existing forever. You tell enough people f**k you die in a fire, those people will get sick of that s**t and walk away with their middle fingers in the air. I ordered a pizza from pizza hut though, and I tipped 2$ for the gas used, since it's not that far. When he got there, it was on time and the guy was super nice, so I handed him another 10$. That's how I work. I will always give you gas money. The real tip is if you don't tell me I'm worse than a pedophilic murderer if I don't give you more. Or be half way down the road in your car before I can answer the door like the Walmart people do. I can't seem to catch them fast enough, even if I yell coming out the window.
Load More Replies... Very glad I live in the UK, where delivery charges you a fee and pays the driver. If they have gone out of their way for something or come up to my hotel room etc (I'm in a wheelchair it's easier for me) I'll tip £1-2 but I know they are still getting paid without that tip. Why America doesn't do the same (I'm sure most other countries do this too) I don't know?!
I will say this till end of time . I do not tip. It is very wrong for a business to pass labor exspense to it's work force. We are the only country that allows this abuse.
Well, that will certainly show those businesses who will never know that their worker didn't get tipped. Maybe don't purchase food or goods from one of these exploitative companies rather than punish the worker?

Load More Replies... This whole tipping thing needs to end. Pay the delivery people a fair wage, and any tips that still show up get divided amongst them at the end of a quarter as a bonus. CLEARLY indicate the delivery price includes a tip, and any additional will be a bonus. People won't care if they were the type who did tip, and the ones that don't can get lost.

You spend half an hour trying them on, and you decide on a pair. The price is X. You walk to the counter, pay X... and then the assistant takes the shoes from your hand and throws them in the street. YOU DID NOT TIP, DID YOU? The same with everyone who works and gives you some ind of assistance or service! YOU DO NOT TIP, YOU GET THROWN OUT!! Have you tipped the pharmacist for preparing your medication? No? Why? She works there, she does not own the pharmacy. So, it is TIP, TIP, TIP... everyone who does not own a business, but is there to assist you, wants a tip. Tomorrow the owners will want a tip too. Already happened in some places! I agree that the tipping and non tiping culture has gone too far, but just remember, if the restaurant starts paying the wage you guys want them to pay, that cost goes directly to us... I know I would rather pay a few bucks for tipping than over $20 for an egg sandwich.

If you ate not getting paid enough, take it up with your employer. Ubereats is NOT a mom & pop resteraunt. Their business model evolved recently. The job is delivery. That's the basics. Tips are for above and beyond. You'd have a massive come down to reality in the UK.
How much does doordash or ubereats even charge you, and how much do they pay their deliverers these days? I refuse to use them on principle, but if I was going to use one I'd want to use an app that actually paid the deliverer so I didn't have to.
Im so sick of the argument "why do you work for a place that doesn't value you enough to pay fairly" Its a stupid f**king excuse for an argument. Why are you attacking the person who has to work for a p.o.s. company? Better question is if you hate the rules they play by why are YOU with the disposable income spending your money at a place that hates its employees?
The thing that some people don't understand is we have to make a decision wether or not an order is going to be worth our time, gas and wear and tare on our vehicles. If it's not, we lose money, and many of us simply can't afford that. It sucks, and I wish it didn't have to be like that. We're just doing the best we can for ourselves to make a living.
Tipping a food driver before delivery makes as much sense as tipping a waiter before your meal is served.
As far as tipping goes, UberEATS gives you up to an hour to edit your tip, after receiving your order. So if your driver is s**t, you don't have to tip. They also offer drivers incentives to complete more orders so it kinda still makes taking those lower paying orders worth our time. Like, if we need to do 50 rides between Friday and Monday, we can get sometimes like an extra $100+ in bonuses. There are also boost incentives that they offer drivers during busy times. And they also have opportunities to sign up for an extra $2 a trip, usually more but $2 is the lowest I've seen.

They terminate driver contracts for LITERALLY NO REASON!! They aren't worth ordering from or driving for. That's probably why they were hemorrhaging money and had to sell Waitr to ASAP, then why ASAP was like 95 million dollars down in 2022, from compared to 2021. They clearly don't know wtf they are doing. And they are literally damaging people's lives by terminating driver contracts totally unwarrantedly. So, merchants, you should should use uberEATS or DoorDash. UberEATS will even deliver packages from store to store for you! All my foodies out there, please, don't support a company that is literally ruining lives by messing with people's livelihoods. Use UberEATS!
On my UberEats app, I can change the tip after delivery, when the "rate your order" comes up. I don't do less than 15%, but I will raise it for exceptional service.
For food, I tip based on $ 10 an hour, that is 17 cents a minute. . For example, at a restaurant, I start timing when my order is taken, and stop when my check is delivered. If that's 30 minutes. I tip $5.10, regardless of the bill. I tip food delivery by the mile ($.50, double at peak traffic times.). IF I tip in jars on food counters, I tend to tip based on the same formula as restaurants. I do not tip based on precalculated tip screens, and always tip in cash.
Are you a customer or the damn Payroll department of the restaurant? I pay the food at the price listed. I don't want to bother about timing, mileage or percentages. I want the establishment I pay for my meal to properly compensate their workers. I want the company to which I pay a delivery fee to compensate their workers accordingly. I pay for a service at an agreed price, they should do their job and manage the economic side. If this means the gig economy is not sustainable, good riddance to the gig economy.

I understand it's ridiculous to people who didn't grow up in the US, but the absolute onslaught of comments on these types of articles about not tipping as a form of protest against a bad system always strikes me as disingenuous, since it seems the exploitative businesses conducting the objectionable practices are what should be targeted. Yet I've never once heard that someone is foregoing the products the exploitative business is selling - it's only the withholding of tips that is the form of protest. Hard not to perceive that as rationalization to save themselves a few bucks.
It's like this we (drivers) are risking our lives and our vehicles to bring your food so you don't have to risk your life or have free time etc.. We also have to pay more for car insurance, we don't have any health insurance, there's so many reasons we can barely make a living. But let me say the vast majority of people do tip and about 20 % tip very well and I guarantee they get great service. To people who say "I'll tip you after." You have to understand that there is a lot of tip baiters out there. People who say I have a cash tip for you then you get there and there's no tip they have little kids answer the door etc.. That's why we say tip first because on the DoorDash app I don't know about the other apps You can see how much somebody's tipping so if it's a high tip order you're more likely to get fast service. It's this simple Door Dash is a luxury service if you don't value my life and my time I refuse to deliver you food! Also you can tip 1 or 2 dollars then if your driver gives you exceptional service the food is hot etc you can tip more after
