One of the worst offenses a female guest can commit at a wedding is to wear white. Unless there are explicit instructions from the bride, white is almost always reserved for the bride only. It’s such a widely known unspoken rule that by now, every mother-in-law on Earth should be familiar with it.

Nevertheless, some still think it’s okay to show up in a “silvery-white” dress even when the bride tells you “no.” After her toxic MIL did this, @sagesarkis put her wedding photos online and the MIL on blast. Soon, her post went viral, and netizens started having fun with the MIL’s dress choice.

Bored Panda reached out to the bride, and she kindly agreed to tell us more about how she felt when she saw her MIL wearing a white dress on her big day, why she decided to share these photos online, and what advice she has for brides who may find themselves in a similar situation. Read our interview with @sagesarkis below!

The bride tells Bored Panda that the dress was just the icing on the cake compared to what the MIL actually put the bride and groom through

Bored Panda reached out to the bride, @sagesarkis, and she kindly agreed to tell us more about what she went through on her wedding day. After seeing her mother-in-law wearing a dress that was clearly white, the bride’s first thought was, “How could she do this to us on our wedding day?”

“I was heartbroken and embarrassed,” the woman shared with Bored Panda. “I chose not to say anything to her and to move on with the day, as it was the most important day of our lives, and I wouldn’t let anyone ruin it.”

Some people didn’t quite understand why she decided to put her MIL on blast and share the wedding photographs online. But @sagesarkis says that this was her way to stick up for her new husband. “[He’s] been manipulated and gaslit by his mom his whole life,” she tells Bored Panda.

“She is telling us we are wrong and she did nothing and there’s no issue with this dress, when she truly hurt her own son on his wedding day and made the day about her instead of just showing up and supporting us.”

Although the dress is a big wedding etiquette faux pas, the mother-in-law did some other things that alienated her son and his new bride even further. “It’s not just the dress,” @sagesarkis tells Bored Panda. “We have audio and video from our wedding of her saying disgusting and terrible things about me and us.”

“I feel extremely validated by going public with this, and it is helping us cope. The only stress I have is his family cutting us out because of it, but if they cut us out for telling the truth, then there’s nothing I can do,” the bride adds.

Stories like @sageserkis’s are abundant online: the mother-in-law or some other guest wearing white to a wedding is becoming a classic bad wedding story. To any brides who may find themselves in a similar situation, she has one piece of advice: don’t let anyone dictate how you want things to be on your special day!

“My best piece of advice is to not let them tell you what to do for your day or try to ruin your day,” @sageserkis tells Bored Panda. “Do your wedding how you want!”

“Make sure you get a photo before of the dress she is going to wear,” she adds. “If she shows up in ivory or white, ask her to leave and change, or not to come back. Set boundaries early and don’t let anyone take away your joy during planning or the day of.”

In the comments, the bride revealed what happened when the newlyweds confronted her: “They all cut us out”

Hi there, fellow pandas! As a person (over)educated both in social sciences and literature, I'm most interested in how we connect and behave online (and sometimes in real life too.) The human experience is weird, so I try my best to put its peculiarities in writing. As a person who grew up chronically online, I now try to marry two sides of myself: the one who knows too much about MySpace, and the one who can't settle and needs to see every corner of the world.

These are very, very stupid women. Otherwise they would realize they've made themselves a laughingstock and everyone at the wedding is talking about what a tacky s k a n k they are. In addition I guess they want their DIL to despise them and do everything she can to make sure they rarely if ever get to see their child or any grandchildren. It's amazing to be this dimwitted.
