Woman Is Sick Of Jerk Tesla Owners, Makes Them Lose The Privilege Of Free Charging

“The tragedy of the commons” has remained a relevant concept long after people stopped bringing their livestock to graze in town for one simple reason – entitlement. Unfortunately, a small group of annoying people can and will ruin things for everyone else, be it peace and quiet or even electricity bills.

A woman got tired of entitled Tesla drivers hogging the charging ports in her building, so she complained enough to make them pay for it. We reached out to the netizen who shared the story via private message and will update the article when she gets back to us.

People will overuse and damage things they don’t own

Image credits: Anna Zhou (not the actual photo)

There’s a certain type of person who sees shared resources, like a public EV charging station, a library, or even a park bench as if it was purposefully made just for them to use. In a sense, this is true, they are among the target audience for a public amenity. However, unlike most rational or mature folks, they often feel that this thing can be overused until it’s basically useless. Unfortunately, this is not a modern phenomenon in any way. As Aristotle wrote, “That which is common to the greatest number gets the least amount of care. Men pay most attention to what is their own: they care less for what is common.”

At first, it’s subtle. Maybe they leave their car at the charger long after it’s fully charged. Maybe they monopolize a picnic table for an entire day, spreading out like they’re setting up a permanent residence. Or maybe they just take all the free napkins from a café, because “Hey, they’re there, right?” If you take the time to look around you in public, it won’t be long before you spot someone doing exactly this.

The core issue, as with so many other, similar stories online, is entitlement. Some people operate under the belief that their personal convenience outweighs the collective good. If a public charger is free, then why shouldn’t they treat it like their private power station? If a workspace is available, why not spread out and claim it indefinitely?

There are no simple ways to “prevent” entitlement

Image credits: Getty Images (not the actual photo)

This mindset ignores the basic rule of shared spaces, that they only work when people use them responsibly. When a handful of people overstay, overuse, or take more than their fair share, it creates frustration, inefficiency, and sometimes even conflict. But the worst part? Entitlement is contagious. The more people see others abusing common goods, the more they think “Well, if they’re doing it, why shouldn’t I?”—leading to a cycle where everyone loses.

Would be basic decency and civic mindedness. Treat public resources like you would if you knew the next person in line was your grandmother. And if all else fails, just remember, nobody likes the person who parks at a charging station for six hours “just because they can.” However, there are all too many cases where the entitled person simply won’t learn. Not to mention, random private citizens are supposed to be immature people’s morality coaches.

This is perhaps why stories like this, of rude and entitled people getting punished for their transgressions, often end up going viral. Most of us have been in this woman’s shoes at some point or another, but it’s more rare to actually have a good opportunity to get “revenge” no matter how small and petty.

I don’t like these generalizations. Whether you’re an a***e doesn’t depend on the car you drive. As someone commuting by bike I meet a***e drivers on a daily basis and they come with any type or brand of car. Can’t say much about Tesla owners since the only ones I know are our neighbors but they are really decent people.

It sounds like the needs of the complex have changed, and there is honestly a simple solution to the whole mess. This was overly dramatic. **Just have all the EV drivers pay the equivalent of a pet fee, to subsidize their use of the chargers, and also increase the number of chargers. Anyone not registered as paying has no right to use, and will be removed**

The best solution, I think is to charge a reasonable rate for the first four hours, then $5/hr or more after that. That's how they do it at my workplace.

As explained in the replies afterwards, it isn't free. There will be a collectibe electricity bill that is shared between all of the properties through their service charge. And yes, if you don't have an EV, you'll be subsidising those that do. There may be a government grant to encourage the uptake of EVs, but I doubt it.

One of my neighbors is a Sheriff deputy with an EV. He has an outside-the-garage charging point. One day, some AH realtor with a Tesla backed into his driveway and plugged in. He went outside and asked WTF she was doing and told her to leave NOW. She refused and said she needed at least 15 minutes to be able to make it back to the office. He unplugged her and demanded she leave immediately. He was not in uniform, so I guess she felt she could ignore him. She started mouthing off while attempting to plug back in. He body slammed her against her vehicle, cuffed her, and then forced her to the ground, called for an on-duty officer, and a flatbed. She was arrested, charged with trespass and theft of services, and her Tesla was impounded. In the end, she was hit with over $5,000 in fines and has a felony on her record.

As a plug-in hybrid driver for almost six years, I look for chargers when I drive, and we need to evolve an agreed upon cultural etiquette, as well as create the right infrastructure and laws. With gas stations, refueling is so quick that nobody leaves their vehicles, but when it’s several hours for charging, people’s selfishness and laziness creates big problems. I think it’ll be another 5-10 years before the right patterns are established. Until then, I’m happy that my car has a gas tank for backup (especially given the other problem: broken chargers).

calling it a swastikar is obnoxious. Teslas were good. cars are good cars, we didn't know how absolutely crazy Musk was going to become. it's not the car owners fault. it's not having enough charges in the building. make friends with your neighbors. and maybe take a yoga class.

Body shaming is wrong in every case. Just like giving money to an authoritarian dweeb for a shiny golf cart. Owning a Tesla is a sure sign someone is comfortable giving money to Musk, which says far more than the size of a mans genitalia. Quit worrying about the size of other men's d**ks so much.

I'm having trouble understanding this. Limited free fuelling for cars? Subsidised by apartment rent? How come? I can't imagine that being a thing here in the UK (FWIW, four hours charging at 7kW adds about 120 miles (190km) range with our electric car). And how come the residents didn't take very direct action against those abusing the facility? If ever there was a case for a strategically placed lentil, surely this was it? https://tyreextinguishers.com/how-to-deflate-an-suv-tyre

I’m a bit frustrated with the hate for people who drive teslas. We purchased a basic model last year (before you know who was a drumpster, but still a w*anker) because we wanted to drive electric & it was the best option at the time. We recently traded in for a different brand for obvious reasons. We are extremely lucky that we had this option. So many people who simply want to do something that protects the environment are being attacked because of the idiot who now owns the company (but had Zero to do with the development of the tech). It sucks to be in that position. Again, we are fortunate, but folks shouldn’t assume that everyone who drives one is a jerk. I know the op has had an experience, but have a bit of compassion & know that driving one of “those” cars does not equate with being of like mind with the evil one & his crowd of sycophants.

It might not equate being of like mind, but it certainly heavily suggests it. The moral Tesla owners who are NOT in a position to change vehicles with comfortability is a very small subset of the population of Tesla owners. The rest of you are complicit.

calling it a swastikar is obnoxious. Teslas were good. cars are good cars, we didn't know how absolutely crazy Musk was going to become. it's not the car owners fault. it's not having enough charges in the building. make friends with your neighbors. and maybe take a yoga class.

Owning a wankpanzer (Tesla) is a sure sign of also possessing a tiny p***s

This person is part of the problem and such a petty jerk. I bet they are like this in all aspects of their life. It’s so cringeworthy.

Care to explain your ridiculous reasoning, Beth? If I parked my car in your driveway, clearly you would be a non-petty person and let me stay there forever, right? You would never call a tow truck because you aren't "cringeworthy". You're just a doormat.
