People Make Fools Of Themselves For Bullying A 16-Year-Old Activist Who Chose To Travel For 13 Days Instead Of Flying 10 Hours
Legendary teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg is causing waves again. This time, literally. She is currently sailing from Plymouth in England to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York on a carbon-neutral, zero carbon emissions racing yacht. The boat travel should take about two weeks, so the schoolgirl hopes to make it in time for the climate change conference which starts on September 23.
The reason the 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl is traveling by sea is that she loves the environment so much, she refuses to fly on airplanes. This is just plain awesome. Unfortunately, some people don’t think so and lambasted her lifestyle choices because they don’t agree with the message she’s sending. Some made fun of her because they think she just wants attention, while others think there’s nothing wrong with flying and rubbed their opinions in her face. Be sure to scroll down to the very end of this post to read Bored Panda’s interview with Marc Moran, who defended Thunberg on Twitter.

“There’s always going to be people who don’t understand or accept the united science, and I will just ignore them as I’m only acting and communicating on the science,” Thunberg called out global warming deniers right before setting sail. Four days after leaving Plymouth, the climate change spokesperson tweeted that she wasn’t feeling seasick yet and joked that being on the boat was like “camping on a roller coaster.”

16-year-old Thunberg is sailing across the Atlantic Ocean on a 60-foot long (that’s 18 meters) yacht with three other people, among whom are her father Svante, and experienced captain Boris Herrmann. The yacht, called the Malizia II, is powered by sunlight and has underwater turbines. Ironically, this marvel of modern eco-friendly engineering lacks a toilet.

Thunberg’s journey by boat was well-received by many environmentally-conscious individuals, However, there were some who called the teenager out. One Twitter user explained how she had “0%” guilt for booking “long haul flights” for her family. Another made fun of her getting on the cover of GQ magazine for telling people to “recycle jam jars.” Others still criticized Thunberg for pulling a stunt for media attention because, allegedly, a crew will have to fly to New York to sail the yacht back to England.
The teenager has drawn a lot of praise for her work from politicians. But she’s drawn a lot of ire as well. Especially recently. In July, she gave a speech at the French parliament, which was boycotted by some lawmakers who called her a “guru of the apocalypse”, a “prophetess in shorts” and the “Justin Bieber of ecology.” However, the teenager is used to ignoring criticism from climate change skeptics.
According to the UN, “the last four years were the four hottest on record, and winter temperatures in the Arctic have risen by 3°C since 1990.” Furthermore, the UN warns that “sea levels are rising, coral reefs are dying, and we are starting to see the life-threatening impact of climate change on health, through air pollution, heatwaves and risks to food security.”
That makes me want to do more in the fight against climate change. If I could, I’d sail everywhere on a yacht. But for now, I’ll keep on recycling jam jars, walking instead of driving, hugging trees when nobody’s looking, and growing vegetables and herbs in my tiny garden. What about you? What are you doing to help the environment? Share your thoughts about Thunberg and climate change in the comments below.

Twitter user Marc Moran, who goes by the handle moranmarc13 and who rushed to Thunberg’s defense online, told Bored Panda in an interview his thoughts about the situation, the activist’s views, and climate change.
“I 100% percent agree with Greta’s message and her views. I feel that as the human race, we have spent hundreds of years, particularly in the last century, making incredible technological breakthroughs. There is no doubt that the very concept of a plane is a mechanical marvel — we have no business being up in the sky traveling at that speed, humans weren’t born being able to do that. Plastic was only properly commercialized and mass-produced around 100 years ago, and it’s easy to see why we used it so much; it is cheap to produce, long-lasting and has a massive range of use cases.
However, when things like plastic and air travel were created, we were naive as a human race and did not realize the impact it has on the environment and our world. Our issue now is that we are allowing our naivety to turn into ignorance, which is what Greta tries so hard to highlight. Of course, not everyone has the time or money to travel by sea as Greta has — and that isn’t what she’s asking for either. However, by doing this she has contributed to the conversation. My own tweet on the subject has been seen 25 million times — if only 5% of those people cut a little bit of plastic from their next weekly shop, that’s 1.25 million shoppers helping to contribute to a less plastic future.”
In Moran’s opinion, people make fun of Thunberg “for two main reasons — shame and intimidation.” Moran also added that “for a 16-year-old girl to tell people older than her that they are ruining the planet and need to change their ways will most definitely hit a bum note with them, as she is helping to contribute to change that they themselves have caused and refused to help undo. I think, unfortunately, although this should never be the case, the fact that Greta has Asperger’s will mean that some scumbags will always disagree with her.”
Moran also had some advice for all the climate change skeptics out there: “Open a window, turn on the news and look at what is happening to the planet through deforestation and the constant use of irresponsible materials. Have a look at the ice caps and polar bears and realize it is all of us causing it. There is no such thing as selective climate meltdown — if we don’t stop it, we will all be affected! So please, don’t buy as much plastic, try to buy used instead of new if you can, get reusable water bottles and containers instead of buying a new bottle of water each day, eat a little less meat and use sustainable travel where you can!
Greta has recently collaborated on a new song with British band ‘The 1975’, which will be the opening song to their new album ‘Notes on a Conditional Form’. I would urge any climate skeptics, or anyone who hasn’t yet heard it, check it out now.”
Moran also told Bored Panda that in an ironic twist of fate, he would actually soon be flying to New York for a “family holiday”, the same city that Thunberg is currently en route to.
There is no excuse for people to belittle this girl for her choice to sail for something she believes in. If you want to fly, then fly. She isn’t stopping you so there is no need to be an a*****e about it. Just leave her alone.
@aurora50 Germany doesnt have Mag lev. They are ICE 4 Models. Many are Diesel/Electric hybrids. The pure electric ones are powered by coal power plants due to the high level of energy needs. The cost per passenger is less on the diesel/electric models than the pure electric ones.
Load More Replies...These "commentators" have made careers and money out of generating outrage. Giving them any attention, like this article, is playing right into their hands. We should dismiss them for the trolls they are and focus on the positives of what Greta is doing.
I disagree. You should call out all the idiots that deny that we are demolishing the environment in which we live. This girl didn't sugercoat it when she told the press that she won't waste any time on speaking to the American president about important things like the environment and climate change. Perhaps that is what all these men got crazy about; A 16 year old girl calling their esteemed leader too incompetent to understand the gravity of the situation.
Load More Replies...She has a crew of 5 thats flying to the US just to sail the boat back. And she is flying back home.
It is sort of depressing that an autistic girl is being used by "We don't have Time", a for-profit corporation run by Ingmar Rentzhog, who plans to turn it into a profitable social network. Other investors are hoping to use the campaign to market billion dollar carbon capture and storage technologies. It is really cynical, and putting her face on everything is just a means to call anyone that criticizes the venture a bully. As for the sailboat trip, it is a publicity stunt. The logistics of flying crews all over the world pretty much negates any ecological savings from her not flying. Saving the environment is a great goal. Making millions off of people's guilt over the environment is not. I am not criticizing her, or her personal motives. I have no doubt she is sincere. Her handlers and PR guy seem to be pretty scammy, though.
the boat requires a crew of 5 that all will be flying back and forth across the atlantic. that's 5 people flying instead of 1 if she had just flown herself. it's not saving the planet it's a publicity stunt.
How about belittling the sailboat stunt. She is flying crew back and forth across the Atlantic. Creating more carbon emission than if she just flew there herself. This is not stunning or brave, its a stunt. Plain and Simple.
I am all for better management of this planet and it's resources. I am even all for the idea of minimizing our carbon footprint. However, please don't say that the boat is "carbon neutral". Sure, it isn't using fossil fuels as a means of powering the boat. But what did it take to manufacture it? There is a lot of metal and wood that goes into building a boat. Both of which require manufacturing, which results in a carbon footprint. Her goal is laudable and her I am glad to see people like her in the next generation trying to make a difference after my own essentially ruined the planet. But we are not yet at a point where something is completely carbon neutral until we can manufacture without a carbon footprint.
Lol you guys immediately removed my comment because I stated facts.
America is only responsible for 15% of all ocean pollution. So paper straws, million dollar yachts, and children aren't going to save us. We have to hold the countries in Africa and China responsible for the destruction of the other 85% of the eco system. We could all stop plastic use in America, drive teslas, switch to completely renewable power sources and it wouldn't make a dent in how bad things are.
I've been intentionally ignoring the political posts here at Bored Panda, because I come for fun. But, really, Jonas forgot to mention that this cute little stunt requires multiple people to take long fossil fueled flights across the Atlantic so they can help sail the yacht back across the Atlantic. Further, that boat is not carbon neutral. It cost a lot of money and resources to manufacture. Also, no one is saying that Greta and her Dad, who accompanied her, are taking the sailboat back.
People used to complain about Al Gore flying everywhere to talk about climate change. Basically you can't win. But if you think that's a reason to do nothing at all, you're part of the problem.
Load More Replies...Now lets see IF all the other climate preachers like: Leonardo DiCaprio, Prince Harry& that horrid wife of his etc. etc. etc. will follow her example by NOT using private jets to fly around the globe to travel to yet another climate conference ;-)
FOUR plane trips in 11 days. Elton John seems to think his paying for two of the flights somehow makes them harmless. Oh, and giving a donation to a carbon footprint fund. Yep - that will definitely make the emissions vanish!
Load More Replies...So she sails here to make a point on climate change.. But then negates it by flying home cause the cameras are off.. Huh..so what is the point of sailing again...oh right carbon neutral footprint.. So like all those boats holding members of the press that will film her arriving.. Are also carbon free?.. Is she al gore
To be fair - the yacht (a multimillion enterprise by some wealthy sponsor) is not CO2 neutral since production of such an individual , exquisite, high-performance yacht would have consumed millions of USD and tens of thousands of hours of man-power and high-end production methods that consume lots of electricity and resources in short supply (e.g. lithium for batteries or silicon for the PV modules). So pretending that this is anything other than a publicity stunt is mere non-sense. Furthermore, I think what makes people somewhat sceptical (to put it lightly) of Greta's intent is, at the end of the day, her rather juvenile proclamation to "listen to the science", where in fact science itself is inconclusive on whether or not the current changes in climate are attributable to human endeavour.
BTW, if you want to jump into the political stage, making demands that lead to a higher cost of living, more controlling government, and a loss of choice and freedom, your age doesn't protect you from "bullying." And the very fact that people are throwing out "bullying" shows that the Cult of Climastrology is using Greta as a human shield.
Carbon-Neutral? When the ship reaches NY, the old crew flies back to Europe, and a new crew flies from Europe to NY to take the yacht back. And Greta and her entourage will fly back to Europa as well. It's only a big PR scam! Poor fans, outraged about the outrage...
Sorry but 99 percent of us dont have rich expensive carbon free sailboats...we are poor..your solution is to stop flying.. So poor people aren't supposed to travel.. Must be nice to be wealthy and preachy at the same time
I don't think that is her point of doing this. You are missing the point. Even without money we can still do other things to help the environment in our own little way.

Greta is an inspiration. If more millenniums were like her the world would be a better place. Shame on the older generation who is as futile as the young ones today. Shame on them to belittle her. It is so easy to mock someone rather than focus on what is truly happening in the world. Shame on them for looking at their belly’s rather than having to be given a wake up call by a young u intelligent woman. They know they are wrong hence mocking is the easy way up rather than cleaning up their mess.
It is not about what she is saying (I agree with her it is 5 minutes after midnight to start changing things), it is more of how she is saying it, IMHO too aggressive and patronizing for someone who pooped their diaper until yesterday. It is also about who is behind this childish campaign. They are using low blows and annoying yelling as their tactics. The world should never succumb to childish hysteria even when it is from a good place!
It's a great cause, no doubt, but will she do any difference? Also, remember that the boat crew will be flying (as in an airplane) back again from the USA, so the environmental impact is as big here as in any travel plans.
I hate when people don't agree with something they feel it necessary to point how they are still failing somehow. like this young woman is going out of her way to draw attention to our global climate problem and you all want to talk about well I hope she has a low footprint toilet. its so juvenile and pointless. what does pointing out that it's really hard to be completely climate conscious solve? a bitterness that should be directed at the manufacturers creating this sub optimal products. but no lets try to make a young woman actually doing something feel bad. ffs.
So many of the businessmen who bleat and gnash about this girl's actions are of the very same ilk who created the problems in the first place. Most of the oil barons and industrialists who led fantastically hedonistic lifestyles thanks to their exploitation of the planet's resources are long dead, yet the living inherit the fallout of their greed. These are probably the same people that were first in line to buy a Tesla... not because they wanted to buy an electric car to save the environment, but because they wanted a shiny new toy that not everyone can afford... and then they leave it sitting in a giant garage with all of the other shiny toys they have while they waste thousands on jet fuel for a flight that would take them 2 hours to drive; with zero emissions in the Tesla they just HAD to have.
I like and support her message, but if she's trying to lead by example, it's going to fall on deaf ears. It's not like we can all say, 'Hey, let's grab our experienced captain and yacht and take two weeks to travel to our destination.'. She's flaunting a life of privilege and of course people are going to react negatively to that.
The people who spend time roasting teens who represent saving the earth are the main cause of why the earth is dying. We all are.

That said, those who use her youth to defend her might want to remember that when you enter the adult world, even if you aren't an adult, you need to wear adult britches. Otherwise it appears she's a tool for those who want to use her because of her youth ("think of the children" politics... which are used by everyone to justify almost everything)... which invalidates her opinions. She seems eminently capable of defending herself.
