Interview With Artist
Humans tend to take their habits for granted. Everything seems self-evident until the perspective shifts. It forces us to reflect on the way we are: humans are not all sunshine and rainbows, as the saying goes. We also have a darker side that we prefer to be swept under the rug.
Barbara Daniels has a calling to reveal these dark things that people do. She shifts the perspective by swapping roles of humans and animals, which in turn raises our awareness of how we behave with other animals, which is brutal and unethical most of the time. There's much room to grow for our species. Her illustrations are a sobering reminder that our society is far from perfect. Though we tend to admire the progress of our own species, we tend to forget that we did it at the price of others.

Just like psycopaths, child abusers and pedophiles, hunters are the worst kind of human beings in existance. How can u take a pic of urself smiling proundly with the corpse u just killed? Not forgeting to mentioning that a lion, a tiger, an elephant, an eagle, any animal, worths countless times more than a single hunter that couldnt even be used as food for animals cause of its toxicity. F**k i hate hunters.

The idea of exploring the relationships between humans and animals first came to me while I was eating chicken wings on holiday in Strasbourg, France. I sketched what the situation might look like if the roles were reversed. The idea resonated with me from that moment on and I began to see the world in a new light. I started to focus on the role reversal concept after moving to Berlin in 2013."

I think it's declawing shown here. Cat claws grow directly from the bone so removing one is pretty much like snipping the end of the finger.

They aren’t cutting the nails only. This is how cats are declawed. They cut off the first knuckle of each digit to declaw.

Note for anyone: Look closely. That isn't a nail. It's the fingertip from the last joint onward. That's what "declawing" is for cats: Removing bone. As a result, declawed cats often suffer behavioral issues (who wouldn't) and long-term pain. They also lack a fundamental aid in climbing, and self-defense. TLDR: DECLAWING IS AMPUTATION!

When I first got my cat (age 7) we declawed her. I never realized that it was bad until now. I don't think my parents knew that it was bad/mean to do it at the time.

Cutting animals claws is the same as cutting humans nails - completelly fine. The problem is declawing - a process in which the claws are permanently removed so that they don't grow back. Imagine someone ripping of your nails and you get the picture - exept in case of animals like cats, the whole part of a finger is removed. It's a horrible procedure and luckily, in most countries it is illegal.

"I learned so much from all the research I did for the artwork that I began to question my own lifestyle, and this led to my decision to become vegetarian. I still learn a lot about the world from each picture I create, and I've received a lot of positive feedback from many people inspired by my work. That really motivates me to continue with the 'Dominion over Man' series."
Barbara tells us what inspired her to create the comics: "The idea of exploring the relationships between humans and animals first came to me while I was eating chicken wings on holidays in Strasbourg, France. I sketched what the situation might look like if the roles were reversed. The idea resonated with me from that moment on and I began to see the world in a new light. I found endless sources of inspiration all around me in everyday life.
The artist also told us what the main goal of the illustrations is: "The goal of my art is to learn about our world by holding a mirror up to humanity and imagining life from the perspective of the many species dominated by the human race. It’s important to me to reverse each situation as accurately as possible, so I need to do a lot of research before beginning each piece. I learn so much from my research, and I receive a lot of feedback from people who believe that my work is spreading awareness."

Barbara tells us more about how she got into art: "I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a small village, art was a much-needed escape from everyday life with six brothers. Following my passion, I studied fine art at GMIT Ireland."

The artist mentioned what the most difficult part of these illustrations is: "The research I do for my work can be difficult, because it’s often very depressing. I tackle some pretty dark topics, and sometimes it affects my mood. Another difficult part of my work is the process itself. It takes about a month to complete each piece, and my chosen medium of pen and ink can be pretty unforgiving. Once that ink hits the watercolour paper, there’s no going back! Mistakes can’t be erased or covered up."

Barbara tells us more about what topics she covers and tells us more about her style: "I cover all topics relating to animals in all aspects of modern life. Some of the topics are gruesome, while others are a bit more lighthearted. My style is a mix between realism and caricature, and I like to focus on details. I started to focus on the role reversal concept after moving to Berlin in 2013. I still have a long list of ideas for new pictures, so I will keep going with my 'Dominion over Man' series for some time to come."

That french video of the fur industry... thats the cherry on top. Thats when u realize how not only ridiculous, but mostly stupid, cruel and ignorant ppl are when they wear fur coats and bags and scarfs... u dont look glamourous, u look like a selfish ignorant psychopath carrying a corpse while believing it makes u look beautifull.
The artist shares what inspired her to keep creating: "I really enjoy creating my own parallel universe with this art, and I still learn so much about our world from each picture I create. That alone would be enough to keep me going, but I also get motivation from the positive feedback I receive from people who are inspired by my work."
Barbara gives some advice for artists or people who want to pursue art: "Don’t be afraid to tackle difficult and uncomfortable topics in your art. When I began working on this series in 2013, I received a lot of negative feedback from friends and family who couldn’t understand why I was painting such weird pictures. Although I sometimes had my own doubts, I stayed true to my vision for four years before I started getting positive feedback. Looking back, I’m happy that I didn’t give up on this idea just to please others."

Fun fact: alligators were an endangered species in the late 1800s and early 1900s, to the point where there were often more hunters than gators in the swamps and bayous during hunting season. Thankfully, they were saved through conservation efforts. This is referenced in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The artist tells us more about herself, her life, and her journey: "I grew up in a small village in County Galway, Ireland. After graduating with a fine art degree from GMIT Ireland in 2005, I lived in Southern California for almost eight years before spontaneously moving to Berlin, Germany in 2013."

Because of the topics in my work, some people assume that I’m trying to shove a political agenda down their throats, but really I’m just an artist exploring an idea and learning more about the world every day. i hate shelters like this. there is a cat shelter near me that i foster from, it has cages but they are big with plenty of room for the cats to roam, and they rotate cats being in the big rooms with a bunch of cat toys and other cats.

This one just reminds me of my dog Tara (a malamute). She LOVES little dogs, but, understandably, until the owner knows she's friendly and won't eat their chihuahua, they don't let their dog say hi. That's why dog parks are awesome.

Once my family discovered a little mom mouse with all her little baby mice in our house. So cute, so precious. Little mouse mom rushed out the place when her nest was discovered. Everyone in my family was like “ dont touch it! Ull get infected!” Yeah they would have been right. They wanted to kill them, to just get rid of them like if they were toxic garbage. NO FCKIN WAY! WHY THE FCK? I took the babies away n put them in place where they would be safe. I thought that's the best i could do under the conditions in that moment. After a moment, the little babies where gone. I really hope her mom found her and took them to a better place and didnt eat then or something like that... the worst case scenario was a death/death fate for the mice family.

While I imagine it's confusing for bees to be smoked and have a portion of their honey harvested, bee keepers care for their bees and with the steep decline in wild populations many crops would also be in trouble.

Same! These are actually the mild side of information appropriate for children. The reality of animal abuse in industrial scale is a lot worse than depicted here ... this is a starting point. And a good one - but it isn't a complete set of information. Most people would be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of all those uncivilized treatments of sentient beings to pamper greed and cheapassery, but still have no problem in buying that stuff, thereby supporting cruelty they themselves can't bear watching, let alone execute themselves.

animal abuse and slaughter is horrible, although most people don't care unless they see it happen to a human, some people wouldn't even care unless it were a white cis male human, i'm vegetarian for this reason, i have no problems with other people eating meat, i just hope that they came from local farms that don't keep their animals in cages or small stalls for their whole lives untill they get killed

What a well-drawn and thought out collection! These are the reason I turned vegan a couple years ago, though I forgot the animal suffering after a while, I stayed vegan because once you stop, you realise how gross it is - milk with blood and pus in it, meat filled with antibiotics, the hormones, the links to cancer, heart disease, etc., not to mention the fact the the planet cannot sustain us eating so much meat for much longer. The only reason to eat meat is because you like the way it tastes. Is that a good enough reason for torturing and killing a creature?

I'm more concerned about these comments from people with such certainty about all these topics. "I know for a fact animals have no souls" or "It's impossible for any living creature to have an understanding of this" or "It's a fact animal parents do not remember their children." Come on... how can any of us say for certainty any of that? And saying your religious beliefs explain it all is a load of crap. It's scary the lengths people will go to to try and justify how abuse to animals is okay.

The only places I eat meat from are ethically sourced. Like grass fed cows not kept in stupid cages their entire life, and chickens that were allowed to walk around outside and stuff like that. I think it’s ok to eat some meat as long as it’s ethically sourced

I support ethical farming but please be careful! A lot of meat farms will go to immense lengths to lie to you about how their animals are cared for. Many meat factories now have "show farms" for people who want to be ethical meat-eaters and care about animal welfare, but in so many cases the numbers just don't add up. I agree with most of them. Still going to eat meat though. I believe that if an animal is killed for food and most of the animal is used (skin, all meat, bones, etc), it's natural. We are omnivores, which means, our body is accustomed eat meat also. I see nothing wrong with that. For me it's about the way how a said animal is raised. If someone chooses not to eat meat, it's their choice. I'm just sick and tired of people who call meat eaters bad people. We are not. I'm pro choice in any matter. By the way, many forests are taken down to make fields where they grow vegan food. Many rainforests are taken down and all the species that live there killed, to make room for palm oil plantations. Every coin has 2 sides. If you look only one side, you don't see the other.

This reminds me of a short story I read when I was a kid. The poor helpless main character is the pet of a nasty spoilt little girl named Zeena, but she still remembers the family she was torn away from and longs for freedom. One day she finally escapes... and then you find out that she was actually a human child and Zeena is an alien kid whose parents probably abducted the main character just to get an exotic pet for their little (green) princess.

It is horrific reality how many people love horror fiction, and those who enjoy seeing other sentient beings to suffer - to them is not horror, it's pleasure, delight. How can peace on the Earth be achieved? It never will, unless people teach their children compassion toward ANY sentient life - regretfully, there is no chance of that happening either. This kinda made me sick... but they really are -mostly-true. The main thing I saw was the bees. Bees chose to stay in a human hive and if they don't like it, they WILL pack up and leave. They give a small amount of the thing they are making constantly in exchange for protection from bears and other bugs. Bees aren't kept on leashes! The rest seemed really true. I probably won't go vegetarian/vegan, but I'll start eating more kosher for sure!

Once i saw a video in which they showed a couple of psychos cutting the tail and the fins of a little shark and then throwin it back to the sea... u could see how the shark slowly sunk until it reached the bottom... that little shark was doomed to die of hunger. Imagine one day a couple of ppl grab u and cut ur arms and legs and leave u in the floor, but u cant move, u cant ask for help, and u dont even know what happened, why, and that you will never be able to move ever again. Fin industry is also one of the most cruel ones cause they mutilate the sharks and leave them to die without any chance of help at all... and all of this for some stupid soup thats supposed to make ur little penis stronger or somethin like that?

The whole eating meat thing is something that I can't not do. I'm unable to go vegetarian or vegan. However, I try my best to only eat meat that does not come from a factory farm. I don't drink milk either.

I grew up around animals, most of my childhood friendships were limited to animals, am one of those people who probably most often have a greater appreciation for animals than people, and have been a vegetarian since I was about 16 - about 25 years now - and I think it ridiculous every single time I see one of these emotionally manipulative guilt trips that make ludicrous attempts to compare animal experiences directly to human experiences. Yes, they, to varying degrees, can suffer, feel fear, apprehension, grief. Obviously. They will each lack certain emotional experiences that we have. They most likely each have others that we lack. But this representation is just as dishonest as can be and is in denial of nature - to its, our, and their detriment. I think it fails to convey anything but the author's dissociation from nature and their ignorance of animals and people alike.Things that are not human beings are NOT human beings, and deserve to be recognised for what they ARE. The cycle of life can't be transcended just by a misguided will alone. We are part of nature, and we are best to remain mindful of the fact. For our benefit. For the benefit of animals. For the benefit of our natural world. That one would wish to not be cruel does follow that one remove themselves from nature. It is the placing of oneself outside of nature, even above nature, that creates the issues attempting to be addressed here in the first place.

This was too over-the-top for me. As a Christian, I cannot agree with most of this bleeding-heart tripe. God put man over all of the animals of the world and was aware that animals would be killed for food. I am only accountable for my own actions, and I do not mistreat animals.

I invite u all to check all these cases in real life, cause all of these illustrations are not inventions of the artist, they are based on real life. The fact that u feel disgusted or offended by the drawings, or be surprised by the rage they provoked, makes me think, what the fck do ppl expect to feel? Cause for me at least, empathy is something ridiculously obvious. When u see cruelty, murder for fun, slavery... do u think these things are fair enough to be respected? What would u feel if u were in their case? Would u like to see ppl “offended” by what others rage while u are tortured? Or complain that what u are suffering is normal and should continue? Think about it when u are treated unfairly, u would like ppl to be on your side, defending u. Go, learn about each case, and seriously, if it doesnt change your perspective and feel empathy for the animals who suffer all these tortures, u are all psychos.

I am very conflicted on the subject of animal testing :( I will strongly agree that experimenting on animals is unethical. Computer simulations are excellent tools for gauging the potential metabolic effects of new drugs, but sooner or later they need to be tested in a real metabolism. However, without the ability to do that testing on animals companies (who still need to do safety testing) are going to move that testing to humans, and naturally the poorest and/or most vulnerable humans (i.e. least expensive). From an ethical standpoint, its difficult to argue that running experiments on poor people is somehow better than running them on pigs. Several drug manufacturers have come under fire recently for using homeless people as test subjects, particularly people suffering from mental illness.

And this is why I'm planting most of my garden in beans. Trying to get my protein from a source that doesn't have a face. I've been gradually reducing my meat intake over the past couple of years. I'm down to maybe 25% of what I would consume 2 years ago. I removed pork completely. I saw photos of mama pigs in gestation/ farrowing crates and I was just done. I have first hand experience with how intelligent and emotionally complex pigs are. I now how scared and confused my Ella pig would be if she were trapped in one of those awful cages. There is no way I am paying for pigs to be tortured like that. No amount of bacon on earth is worth that for me.

You call it tasteless, but it’s reflecting the reality of how we treat non-human animals. You are right to feel disgust because the reality is, this is disgusting behavior on our end. The solution is then to do something about it. Stop supporting these systems. And while we are overpopulated, these actions are not vital to our survival. In fact, many of them contribute to our inability to sustain ourselves long-term. Even just getting rid of the factory farming industry (which covers several of these panels), would mitigate so much of the damage we are doing as a result of our overpopulation.

Same! These are actually the mild side of information appropriate for children. The reality of animal abuse in industrial scale is a lot worse than depicted here ... this is a starting point. And a good one - but it isn't a complete set of information. Most people would be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of all those uncivilized treatments of sentient beings to pamper greed and cheapassery, but still have no problem in buying that stuff, thereby supporting cruelty they themselves can't bear watching, let alone execute themselves.

animal abuse and slaughter is horrible, although most people don't care unless they see it happen to a human, some people wouldn't even care unless it were a white cis male human, i'm vegetarian for this reason, i have no problems with other people eating meat, i just hope that they came from local farms that don't keep their animals in cages or small stalls for their whole lives untill they get killed

Go for it Pheonix, try Beyond Burger, Impossible Burger, Sausage (I like original, rather than Italian version) Gardein Brand is great, so are plant-based dairy. I myself do not need to have plant-based meats but sometimes I do.

What a well-drawn and thought out collection! These are the reason I turned vegan a couple years ago, though I forgot the animal suffering after a while, I stayed vegan because once you stop, you realise how gross it is - milk with blood and pus in it, meat filled with antibiotics, the hormones, the links to cancer, heart disease, etc., not to mention the fact the the planet cannot sustain us eating so much meat for much longer. The only reason to eat meat is because you like the way it tastes. Is that a good enough reason for torturing and killing a creature?

I'm more concerned about these comments from people with such certainty about all these topics. "I know for a fact animals have no souls" or "It's impossible for any living creature to have an understanding of this" or "It's a fact animal parents do not remember their children." Come on... how can any of us say for certainty any of that? And saying your religious beliefs explain it all is a load of crap. It's scary the lengths people will go to to try and justify how abuse to animals is okay.

The only places I eat meat from are ethically sourced. Like grass fed cows not kept in stupid cages their entire life, and chickens that were allowed to walk around outside and stuff like that. I think it’s ok to eat some meat as long as it’s ethically sourced

I support ethical farming but please be careful! A lot of meat farms will go to immense lengths to lie to you about how their animals are cared for. Many meat factories now have "show farms" for people who want to be ethical meat-eaters and care about animal welfare, but in so many cases the numbers just don't add up. SOURCE: I completely fell for this for years, before I did the maths.

I agree with most of them. Still going to eat meat though. I believe that if an animal is killed for food and most of the animal is used (skin, all meat, bones, etc), it's natural. We are omnivores, which means, our body is accustomed eat meat also. I see nothing wrong with that. For me it's about the way how a said animal is raised. If someone chooses not to eat meat, it's their choice. I'm just sick and tired of people who call meat eaters bad people. We are not. I'm pro choice in any matter. By the way, many forests are taken down to make fields where they grow vegan food. Many rainforests are taken down and all the species that live there killed, to make room for palm oil plantations. Every coin has 2 sides. If you look only one side, you don't see the other.

Natural is different from ethical, we (as a human living in a developed country) can live perfectly without exploiting and killing other sentient being, the only reason we still do it is to please or taste bud, not ethical at all to choose to keep exploiting animals

This reminds me of a short story I read when I was a kid. The poor helpless main character is the pet of a nasty spoilt little girl named Zeena, but she still remembers the family she was torn away from and longs for freedom. One day she finally escapes... and then you find out that she was actually a human child and Zeena is an alien kid whose parents probably abducted the main character just to get an exotic pet for their little (green) princess.

It is horrific reality how many people love horror fiction, and those who enjoy seeing other sentient beings to suffer - to them is not horror, it's pleasure, delight. How can peace on the Earth be achieved? It never will, unless people teach their children compassion toward ANY sentient life - regretfully, there is no chance of that happening either. There NEVER will be human rights and justice for all without animal rights - their right to life, happiness, and humane treatment, period.

This kinda made me sick... but they really are -mostly-true. The main thing I saw was the bees. Bees chose to stay in a human hive and if they don't like it, they WILL pack up and leave. They give a small amount of the thing they are making constantly in exchange for protection from bears and other bugs. Bees aren't kept on leashes! The rest seemed really true. I probably won't go vegetarian/vegan, but I'll start eating more kosher for sure!

Once i saw a video in which they showed a couple of psychos cutting the tail and the fins of a little shark and then throwin it back to the sea... u could see how the shark slowly sunk until it reached the bottom... that little shark was doomed to die of hunger. Imagine one day a couple of ppl grab u and cut ur arms and legs and leave u in the floor, but u cant move, u cant ask for help, and u dont even know what happened, why, and that you will never be able to move ever again. Fin industry is also one of the most cruel ones cause they mutilate the sharks and leave them to die without any chance of help at all... and all of this for some stupid soup thats supposed to make ur little penis stronger or somethin like that?

The whole eating meat thing is something that I can't not do. I'm unable to go vegetarian or vegan. However, I try my best to only eat meat that does not come from a factory farm. I don't drink milk either.

Kaori Panda, I'm just curious, why wouldn't you be able to adopt vegan or even vegetarian diet? All the medical problems non - vegans are suffering from are non - existent in vegans!!!! My guess is that you would have to transition very slowly and gradually.

I grew up around animals, most of my childhood friendships were limited to animals, am one of those people who probably most often have a greater appreciation for animals than people, and have been a vegetarian since I was about 16 - about 25 years now - and I think it ridiculous every single time I see one of these emotionally manipulative guilt trips that make ludicrous attempts to compare animal experiences directly to human experiences. Yes, they, to varying degrees, can suffer, feel fear, apprehension, grief. Obviously. They will each lack certain emotional experiences that we have. They most likely each have others that we lack. But this representation is just as dishonest as can be and is in denial of nature - to its, our, and their detriment. I think it fails to convey anything but the author's dissociation from nature and their ignorance of animals and people alike.Things that are not human beings are NOT human beings, and deserve to be recognised for what they ARE. The cycle of life can't be transcended just by a misguided will alone. We are part of nature, and we are best to remain mindful of the fact. For our benefit. For the benefit of animals. For the benefit of our natural world. That one would wish to not be cruel does follow that one remove themselves from nature. It is the placing of oneself outside of nature, even above nature, that creates the issues attempting to be addressed here in the first place.

This was too over-the-top for me. As a Christian, I cannot agree with most of this bleeding-heart tripe. God put man over all of the animals of the world and was aware that animals would be killed for food. I am only accountable for my own actions, and I do not mistreat animals.

A lot of ppl seem to be offended by these illustrations. I invite u all to check all these cases in real life, cause all of these illustrations are not inventions of the artist, they are based on real life. The fact that u feel disgusted or offended by the drawings, or be surprised by the rage they provoked, makes me think, what the fck do ppl expect to feel? Cause for me at least, empathy is something ridiculously obvious. When u see cruelty, murder for fun, slavery... do u think these things are fair enough to be respected? What would u feel if u were in their case? Would u like to see ppl “offended” by what others rage while u are tortured? Or complain that what u are suffering is normal and should continue? Think about it when u are treated unfairly, u would like ppl to be on your side, defending u. Go, learn about each case, and seriously, if it doesnt change your perspective and feel empathy for the animals who suffer all these tortures, u are all psychos.

I am very conflicted on the subject of animal testing :( I will strongly agree that experimenting on animals is unethical. Computer simulations are excellent tools for gauging the potential metabolic effects of new drugs, but sooner or later they need to be tested in a real metabolism. However, without the ability to do that testing on animals companies (who still need to do safety testing) are going to move that testing to humans, and naturally the poorest and/or most vulnerable humans (i.e. least expensive). From an ethical standpoint, its difficult to argue that running experiments on poor people is somehow better than running them on pigs. Several drug manufacturers have come under fire recently for using homeless people as test subjects, particularly people suffering from mental illness.

And this is why I'm planting most of my garden in beans. Trying to get my protein from a source that doesn't have a face. I've been gradually reducing my meat intake over the past couple of years. I'm down to maybe 25% of what I would consume 2 years ago. I removed pork completely. I saw photos of mama pigs in gestation/ farrowing crates and I was just done. I have first hand experience with how intelligent and emotionally complex pigs are. I now how scared and confused my Ella pig would be if she were trapped in one of those awful cages. There is no way I am paying for pigs to be tortured like that. No amount of bacon on earth is worth that for me.
