Woman Refuses To Give Her Special Piece Of Cake To 5YO Niece, Mortified When Parents Do
Dietary restrictions can be tough to deal with, as people often have to plan all of their meals and events around them. This becomes even more difficult if the folks in their life aren’t sympathetic or understanding about their allergies.
This is exactly what one woman with gluten and lactose intolerances had to face when she attended her grandfather’s birthday party and got her customized cake slice swiped by her niece. She was shocked because her brother and sister-in-law had enabled the kid’s entitled behavior.

People with food intolerances already struggle to manage their meals at parties and events, without other folks making it even tougher

The poster shared that she was lactose and gluten intolerant, and also on a diet due to diabetes, which is why her mom got her a custom cake slice during a party

The problem started when the poster’s 5-year-old niece wanted her slice of cake because it had a rose painted on it, and her parents expected it to be given to her

Even though the poster said no to giving her slice of cake away, her brother and sister-in-law took it anyway for their child, which left the poster fuming

The poster’s mother defended her decision not to share her cake with her niece, while her brother called her a jerk for doing so
Since the poster had gluten and lactose intolerances, her family was careful to make the necessary accommodations for her so that she could also enjoy celebrations. When her grandfather’s party was being held, her mom thoughtfully bought her a special slice of cake that she could eat and enjoy.
According to experts, people with food allergies and intolerances should make their problems known to their friends and family so that they can get the support they need. People who genuinely care will make the required accommodations, whereas the folks who don’t aren’t true friends.
The OP also faced this at the party when her 5-year-old niece kept trying to eat the food set aside for her. She also took a fancy to the cake that had been bought for the poster and asked her parents for it so that she could eat it. That’s when they began pressuring the woman to give up her only slice of cake.
In situations like this, where family members might criticize or make light of your food allergies, it’s important to set boundaries with them right away. Although this might be uncomfortable to do, it’s necessary to keep oneself safe and also make the other people aware of how dangerous to their health these intolerances can be.

The OP stood up to her brother and sister-in-law and told them that she didn’t want her niece to take her only piece of cake. Unfortunately, when she went to the bathroom and returned, she was shocked to see the little one eating it because her parents had sneakily taken it away.
When she confronted them, they got mad at her for not giving up her cake for a little child and causing a fuss. She tried to explain to them why the situation meant so much to her, but they didn’t seem to understand how expensive the custom dessert had been and why she couldn’t have anything else.
In situations like this, when folks refuse to understand your allergies, it’s important to take a step back and keep yourself calm. Going into a long, drawn-out story will not help if someone is purposely trying to misunderstand you. It’s best to find ways to look after yourself and avoid such people.
Luckily, the OP’s mother took her side in this situation and defended her against her entitled brother and sister-in-law. Although it must have been tough to deal with such mean family members, hopefully the woman learned a lesson about who supported her and who didn’t.
Have you ever dealt with a situation like this, and do you know anyone with such severe food allergies? We’d love to hear from you, so do share your thoughts in the comments below.
People sided with the poster and were shocked by the entitlement of her relatives

I just HATE people who can literally eat ANYTHING and then decides to steal the only thing people with allergies etc can eat 🤬🤬🤬 I'm lactose intolerant, celiac, AND have IBS and it's 9,5/10 when there is nothing for me to eat if I don't bring my own, and almost half of the time when I do those get eaten if I don't guard them like a dog, just let me eat! 🤬
It's always the gluten free pizza with non-dairy cheese that everybody eats first! Why? And if management gives the whole pizza to the two people it was ordered for, everybody complains "How come I can't have my own pizza too?" Because you don't need it you moron! I have IBS too BTW and it s***s, just the small amount of sauce on the pizza makes me bloat and get painful (can't stand up straight gas) the next day after eating it. So I only indulge on Fridays. People just don't understand.
Load More Replies...I hate how insensitive people are about allergies. On of my stepkids cannot have gluten. I won’t even pick a restaurant she doesn’t have options at. It’s a lot harder for her than me. Why? Because I love her and care she feels included. I’m also a better cook because of it. I can’t imagine in what universe a grown adult thinks this is okay.
People without dietary restrictions just don't get it. I have a chronic condition and there are a very limited number of foods I can eat right now. One of them is melon and it's out of season and therefore expensive. I buy it specifically to prevent vitamin deficiency (I can digest rice, eggs and bananas and that's it, everything else makes me nauseous). I've had to blast my family for eating my food. I can eat 4 bloody things at the moment and you just HAD to eat it all? When I bought it specifically because it's one of the few things I can eat? It drives me bonkers.
To me it's less "people without dietary restrictions don't get it" but more a "parents not wanting to parent" kinda problem. I don't like to see/hear kids crying or making them cry, but it's pretty much unavoidable at times, and not the catastrophe that some parents make it out to be. Children need to learn social skills and clues or you'll end up with inconsiderate adults.
Load More Replies...Bro needs to reimburse OP for the more expensive GF cake. Gluten-free foods, especially baked goods, are EXPENSIVE AF! I was diagnosed with a gluten issue later in life, after eating regular stuff my whole life. Some know the difference in price—-as well as taste and texture—-between gluten-free and gluten-full, and believe me, for being WAY more expensive, you’d think the GF alternatives would taste better. When I find one that’s a good substitute for the real thing, I stick to that brand exclusively. Since most GF alternatives taste like s**t, it’s just hard for me to understand why someone who is able to eat the good, gluten-full stuff would ever want to take someone else’s s****y GF alternatives in the first place. I MISS soft fresh baked gluten bread, cake, cookies, pies. I miss gluten pasta, and candies that have gluten in them—-some I wondered why , because the candy itself has no gluten in the basic recipe, until I found out they sometimes get a dusting of powder between their filling and their candy shell. Thanks candy industry, a lot for taking yet another favorite candy away from, that I could otherwise eat because it has NO gluten in it, and ADDING unnecessary gluten to it! I’m looking at you, Good-N-Plenty, and you’re not the only ones!
I truly cannot stand it when people let their kids do this mess. I went to a friend's 4th of July BBQ and this little four-year-old boy (I don't even know whose kid he was) kept trying to reach for food on my plate. I kept pushing the plate back and saying (in a gentle but firm way), "This is my food. Do not touch someone else's food." And not a single adult in the room seemed to understand why I wouldn't let him put his hands on my meal...even in families, it's rude, especially if that's all that someone can actually eat!
Yuck, especially considering how children are nothing but little germ factories, and you have no idea where those grubby little unwashed hands have been!

So sad that girl has such entirely worthless parents that are teaching her to be an entitled little brat. I think, in future, I'd just avoid any of those family gatherings entirely. They can't win if you don't play.
Diabetic here, most of us just take extra insulin if we want to eat high carb foods.
This is just like those self-important jerks who go to a paid event where a meal is included and there are lots of dishes, buffet style, and a few of them are off to one side and/or clearly labeled with allergen status, and they eat those items instead of leaving them for those who CANNOT eat the regular items. You have lots of options! Please don't be a jerk and eat the small number of ONLY options for people with special dietary needs. I can't tell you how many times I've PAID EXTRA for safe foods to be available for me, only to find out that there's little to none left for me because people who can eat the regular stuff eat the specialty stuff. I've gone home from these events hungry more often that not and sometimes I've paid up to $40 extra on top of the event fee to have that food available to me.
