“One Antiquated Rule, Down!”: Princess Charlotte’s Nail Polish Steals The Spotlight At Wimbledon Final

Prince William and his family were seen at Wimbledon, and a minute detail on his daughter, Princess Charlotte, stirred up a furor among crown chasers.

The 10-year-old was seated between her mother Kate and her older brother George on Center Court to watch reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz face his rival, Jannik Sinner.

The child’s appearance has since raised questions about deviation from age-old monarch decorum when in public.

Highlights
  • Princess Charlotte’s pink nails at Wimbledon stirred debate about royal tradition and modern expression.
  • Social media is split between admiration and criticism, with some seeing her look as a symbolic break from outdated rules.
  • Her appearance drew more attention than even Prince William or George, especially among royal watchers online.

Charlotte is said to have inherited her love for the game from her mother, Kate. The 43-year-old was known to frequent the exclusive members-only All England Lawn and Tennis Club.

It is the third time she has been seen at the tournament since 2023,  and she has been observed to be animated in her support of her favorite contestants.

This time around, she supported Alcaraz, who has since lost his title to Jannik.

At some point during the match, she was seen lifting her hands to her mouth in a reaction to a development in the game. This is when a photographer captured the detail that became a talking point.

The little detail was seen as Charlotte breaking with royal tradition

Charlotte, wearing a white summer frock that has enthusiastically been described as “stylish” by royal fans, was also seen wearing pink nail polish.

“Princess Charlotte’s bright nails could be seen as her breaking from tradition, given previous speculation, though that doesn’t appear to be the case,” pondered theUK’s Mirror.

Observing the girl’s flat white shoes and dress with black ribbing, the Daily Mail also weighed in and dubbed her nail color “funky pink.”

However, Charlotte’s mother Kate, her grandmother Diana, and her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth all favored the color pink

The public, as can be seen by fans on social media, is wondering about the color, and one person said as much when they wrote:

“Thought bright colors weren’t allowed in the RF.” Supporting this query is the idea that royals are supposed to wear pale and neutral colors.

However, if Queen Elizabeth‘s choice of nail polish—Essie’s Ballet Slippers, also pink, according to She Knows—and Charlotte’s late grandmother Diana’s choice in wardrobe colors are anything to go by, pink is quite the royal color.

Additionally, just days prior on July 9, Charlotte’s mother Kate was seen in a muted pink two-piece by Christian Dior.

Never mind the nails, social media rebelled at the sight of the family

Social media, ever present with its judgment, has weighed in on the sighting.

“When you zoom in the nails don’t look too perfect so she probably did them herself or her mum maybe,” observed one internet sleuth who found the idea “gorgeous.”

“It must be push the pretend to be royal month propaganda,” remarked another, obviously not impressed.

“Delighted she is wearing girly pink nail polish! One antiquated rule, down!” quipped another.

Kate, donning a long blue dress and broad-brimmed straw sunhat, was not forgotten, and one person, who jumped to their defense, wrote:

“Beautiful little girl, enjoying time with her Mum who is in remission from cancer. Cut her some slack for goodness sake.

“She’s human and has feelings like the rest of us.”

The internet also marveled at the suits William and his son George chose for the summery day

But not all the attention was for the girls, and some netizens honed in on the men of the royal entourage.

One person wondered whether William and George wished they had donned “shorts and t-shirts” rather than suits in the 79 degrees Fahrenheit of the London summer.

“Fancy putting the poor lad in a suit and tie in this heat,” echoed another.

Notably, while Charlotte is broadly seen to have stolen the show among royal fans, it occurred in the absence of her younger brother Archie, who is building a track record for rebelling in public.

Some think the nails are not perfect but they are gorgeous

You can find dozens of photographs of various royal family women wearing non-neutral nail polish colours online. People seem to think that they have this rule, but none of the women have adhered to any imagined etiquette.
