This is how I met my first customer for my artwork and my current boyfriend. I may have never drummed up the courage to take an international trip if I hadn't met him, and I'm glad I got over that fear and went to see him, while giving myself a much needed vacation. I got family all over, but with social media and email I can show them my artwork and family photos, and keep in touch. I got to meet a long lost cousin, and chat with another long lost cousin. As much as people bash social media, when used right it can be blessing.

And online support groups are amazing. I have a little-understood medical condition called myalgic encephalomyelitis, which is very debilitating. I found a support group on FB, and now I'm connected with hundreds of people with the same symptoms and frustrations. To no longer feel so alone is a wondrous thing.

I remember meeting up with a group of online friends for the first time in Philadelphia back in 1991, to see a Yes concert. It was really, really cool to meet all these folks that had previously been just email addresses. And that was 30 years ago (wow), so the technology was a lot more...primitive. No pictures, no videos, no nothing. We described our appearances and one guy who was skilled at drawing attempted to draw us from our descriptions. He did a really good job. Had a blast. Will remember that day forever.

We all met by randomly playing Diablo 3 and created a party after running together for like 3 hours. After that it was just gaming and organically bringing in more to the group. Now here is a dedicated 8 of us that speak daily if not weekly.

But at least there is access. I agree that there should be equality in access, but in the US, even if you've got insurance one accident or illness can take everything you've worked your whole life for and leave you penniless, homeless and still in debt.

There's no such thing as medicine anymore. There's "medication." They have no interest in curing any diseases; as there's no money in cures. So we have medication and treatments.

Yes, half the people on this planet have no access to basic healthcare, and the other half have some very vocal people refusing to use it. My mom for example took some convincing from my doctor cousin to get vaccinated, and just last week told me she “doesn’t believe in antibiotics”, instead treating her bacterial infection with herbs.

There was an era in human history where simply being left-handed was a death sentence, let alone practicing any actual "social deviance". I think materialism and the search for experience will always be around, but alternating. Salaries not keeping up with the cost of living may be a factor in driving the more Romantic spirit. If one can only afford a small bachelor, a walk in the wilderness or dancing the night away becomes more tempting. When I lived in a poor-ish neighbourhood, people were constantly outside socializing, much more so than in the middle-class neighbour where people had more private space, including backyards.

I rebuke most of your comments thusly: People can now be harassed by their boss 24/7. Cheap crap that is made by kids/slave labour and then gets shipped around the world at huge environmental cost just to break quickly. People still die all the time, and more things are mutating or becoming resistant. Cooking is convenient, but plastic waste is ridiculous, and again, shipping of even native food items around the world. In the first world, kids are great, but in many other countries they're still slave labour to make cheap junk for the rich countries. Constantly light is NOT a good thing, wasteful of resources and bad for sleep patterns of humans and animals alike. Poo in the street when floods happen because every city is becoming a concrete spillway and our water management sucks. Tap water isn't safe to drink in several countries, and then there's all the countries without even taps. I've apparently hit the character limit...

Hi Kika, being that you are an anti-vaxxer, if you do not go out or interact with society in any way whatsoever, then your personal choice would not affect anyone else. However since you refused to get vaccinated from contagious diseases, please understand that if you do go out anywhere, shopping, the gym, a restaurant, a nightclub, a movie theater, a library, the hospital, etc etc etc, then you increase the risk of picking up a disease and passing it to someone else, possibly causing severe injury and even death to them. So do not think for 1 second that your personal choice on this matter will not affect anyone in that way.

The American Medical Association's lobbyists and the politicians they bought started screwing up US Healthcare decades ago. The anti-tax agenda promoted by some politicians in exchange for money from lobbyists and donations of the very wealthy has made the system dramatically worse. Despite all that, medicine continues to advance because there is so much monetary incentive. Unfortunately, it would require a dramatic adjustment to the current political system before everyone has access to the advancements.

I'm bipolar and an ambivert and for some reason my parents moved me just after high school to the middle of nowhere. Can you say no friends? Being bipolar means I suffer from extreme depressive slumps, but I can just as easily be unhandibly hyperactive. It's very hard to make friends in person, but I have had online friends to talk me down for so long that my closest friends are online.

It makes me think that once they start voting the 'established' political parties around the world, and the corporations are going to rapidly loose support.

As a teacher, I can say I completely agree with this. Do they sometimes not do their work? Yes, but usually it's because they don't see the value in it. They question why things are worth their time, which I personally see as a good thing. You have to show them why it's important. They're kids and because of that, it's our jobs to show them why they need things. So, you do things like show the kid who's sure they're going to be a Youtube star that they need to be able to understand what they read by showing them the Youtube terms on how to get paid. Or, show the kid who thinks they don't need school because he's going to play for the NFL the average salaries for linemen. These kids don't sit at the older generations' knees and stare at them in reverence just because they're older, they will treat the older generation just like the older generation treats them.

More division because the forcing of "integration" and overdoing the "token X person" is ridiculous. Every show that doesn't show diversity is abused even to the point of changing the race of historical people. This creates more tension because haters gonna hate, middle ground then argue back to defend things (although no defending some stuff that's done!) and the loonies are STILL not happy and still call "white privilege" for everything. Then add social media into the mix and nothing but hate

Washing machines are one of the greatest labor saving devices. If you have ever done washing by hand you would know that sheer amount of effort it takes to make clothes clean without one. Once bought a wringer washer while in Venezuela in Peace Corps after washing clothes by hand. OMG. when i told my mom she 100% agreed.

That's an interesting thought. Makes me think about how we romanticize the past. When I was young, I thought so many problems we have now didn't exist in "the good old days," but as I got older I came to realize that those troubles have always existed, but everyone pretended that they didn't and victim blaming was more intense in many cases, so you "just don't talk about" how Aunt Jane's husband beat her or how cousin Alice was raped by the local high school athletic hero. We do often see these things more clearly and hold the perpetrators responsible by utilizing laws that didn't even exist to protect the victim when I was a child. There's a freedom to discuss many issues that were once taboo.

Labour saving machines are SUCH a good thing I'm glad someone mentioned it! What took our ancestors hours or days takes us just a few minutes and that's so important, probably THE most important development of tech--saving us TIME. Time we can spend on things like art and socialising and other things that enrich us as human beings.

This isn't 100% true. This is only true in wealthy white-dominated parts of the world. China was recently lambasted for going to Malawi to film Africans for humorous racist tiktoks (I'm african). Also in Africa only in South Africa do we tolerate different identities. There are ongoing tribal conflicts across africa e.g. Ethiopia vs Tigray etc. In our country (SA) you are constitutionally protected with any identity (gay, atheist, etc.,) but outside SA you are going to be in trouble if you flaunt your non-heteronormativity or atheism. For example Nigeria has a something like 99% religiosity. We note with interest the correlation between racism, Baptist christianty, Trumpism, and the Deep South in USA (mason/dixon). We conclude that it literally is only wealthy areas like northwest europe and maybe NY/CA in USA that are tolerant.

The biggest complaint of those who have proper knowledge about the gmo industry is that it is a huge lever to kill healthy small farming and convert it to industrialized monoculture environment rape. The unfortunate common practice is that big corporations with gmo fields ensure their seed is spread into local farmers field, then they prove enfringements of these farmers using the gmo seeds without paying and in the legal battle offer a deal to take over the locals land and hire the farmers (of course really bad deals). This is no consiparcy but a very common practice, huge in underdeveloped countries especially in South America, but also happening e.g. In Germany to have farmers loose their "bio" /organic certification and driving them into bankruptcy to take over.

And that is a political/greed issue. People love using this as "proof" that GMOs are evil, even though it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the science. But thank you for proving my point, and suggesting that I, and everyone else who supports the science and acknowledges what an incredible benefit it has been to both medicine and food, and have ACTUALLY studied it (at university, not on google), have no "proper knowledge" of it.

Things will change if people stop voting down party lines, stop voting for the candidate someone told them to vote for, and start spending the time necessary to do the research to find out where the candidates stand on important issues and which companies donated to their campaign fund. We also desperately need term limits because even the most idealistic person is going to become jaded, start using their office for personal gain, and decide screw the constituents they promised to serve.

The final nail in the coffin? I was supposed to have a virtual visit with my psychiatrist and the office staff KNEW that I've had numerous difficult times to the point where I had to go into the office. I should mention that I'm immunocompromised, so there's that. Anyway, I was starting to answer the standard questionnaire 15 minutes beforehand; just like I was supposed to. Well, I started to have trouble and every troubleshooting method I knew of wasn't working. Needless to say, I called the office because my appointment was already supposed to be in progress. They cancelled my appointment and said, "If you had problems, you should have called us at least 3 hours before your scheduled appointment." ...as if I hadn't told them several times before that I had struggles. 2 months. I needed a new refill on a prescription (my insurance is a pain in my neck) and the psychiatrist needed to approve it. The office staff refused to let me talk to the doctor in general and I told the office manager; apparently after 3 and a half years of being a patient with them, my mental health no longer mattered. If you're remotely familiar with anti-psychotic meds, you'll know that withdrawal can be brutal for multiple parties. At an appointment with my family physician, she wrote me a new prescription that would keep me from being admitted to the psych hospital. I'm sorry for the lengthy comments, I just wanted to share my experience. If you downvote me, you downvote me

Being able to meet someone from overseas, and develop a relationship with him, without paying exorbitant phone bills, or having to write letters through snail mail (although that still can be an occasional option), and be able to share photos, videos and messages in real time, and being able to video chat. Long distance relationships have never had it easier.

Social mobility. My great-grandmother was an indentured servant during her childhood in Germany and suffered tremendous abuse and disregard for her life. She came to America and had kids of her own, who had an impoverished and abusive life, and on top of that, there was not only elitism, but also anti-immigrant sentiment and anti-German sentiment; but my grandfather's upbringing wasn't as tough as hers. My dad had an impoverished life, but not as difficult as his dad's. My sibling and I grew up "working poor," but now live comfortable, white collar, middle-class lives. And my kids have a access to college, access to healthcare, and, while we're certainly not rich, the kids live in comfort and have the opportunity to shape their futures, at least somewhat. In my great-grandmother's time, there was no opportunity for people of her class, and she would never have imagined her great-great grandchildren having such comfortable lives and bright futures. It's also good to see that the same promise of a brighter future is starting to come true for EVERYONE, and I'm glad that it's finally coming. Many people have waited for a brighter future longer than my family did, and I want them to have it!

My neighboar, who's been deceased 10 years now, used to tell me that she was sold by her family to serve for a riich family when she was 10 ("i used to love studying, but i was cut short and did not graduate primary school"). Then WW2 happened with it's own atrocities where she was left an orphan taking care of her younger siblings at 16. I used to listen these stories and think "WTF is this XIX century nonsense, how is there any still living person experiencing this???"

While globalization may be problematic in its own terms, I am just amazed to be in a world where there’s so much diversity and where I can learn about the history and practices of other cultures. Our ancestors were never able to learn about how the people on the other side of the globe lived and now in this era not only can I learn about a completely different culture, I can easily learn the language or even talk to someone from that culture within seconds!! There’s just so much to see and learn and I don’t think I’d have the same passions if I lived in only a couple decades ago.

It's almost impossible to grasp the huge impact the availability of information worldwide has on our lifes. If you have ever had any contact with science you know how much current advances are based on the work of hundrets and thousands of scientists before. And only since a couple of decades all this knowledge is but a mouse-click away. Before a fraction might have been published in journals of which a fraction is available at your library.. None of our current technology, starting from the very basics such as the steel we build things with, would be possible without this. To stick with this "tiny" example: I can't recall the exact number, but more than 50% of the steel types available at 2010 have been developed in the 10 years before. Steel is used in almost all machines than produce or build anything. Hence making the world around us (Even the saw blade for that wood furniture you bought). And this is only a tiny example.

Because walking or riding a horse was better? The flu traveled to the new world by boat when the Europeans came to the Americas. The Black Plague spread across Europe without cars or planes. I understand your sentiments about pollution. But that necessitates people demanding clean alternatives, not going back to horses. I love that the world is available to me for travel. It beats a month long journey across the ocean by boat where the odds of making it weren't that great. And many of us want to see the world for own experience. Social media only seems big. From what I can tell, there aren't exactly a lot of people I know that follow the so called influencers. They just get a lot of coverage, especially if you are on web a lot.

Most of the noise comes from friction between tires and road, noise from engine is minuscule. Also noise is essential for blind people safety. Also electric cars use power that is produced in plant which... drum roll please... cause pollution! And let's not even talk about how electric batteries have relatively short life span, cannot be recycled and use VERY rare resources. Lithium is VERY rare which is why there are conspiracy theories that Russia caused the war for it.

The death rate is consistent at one per person.

Anyone who keeps up with international news can see that we are doomed. Things are happening everyday that bring us closer to war. No one is going to back down. Joe, vlad, and Xi which one do you think will back down? None.

yes. Enjoy the moments in the meantime 👍There is such beauty to be found in this coincident existence! Who thought up cats loving their fur stroked and humans who love to live through their eyes and love touching soft things with their hands? Imagine if birds croaked instead of sung… even though they sing about fight and sex, their song sound beautiful to us. My hand astounds me! Such agility and a thumb?! praise your thumb, it's a marvel.

They are making these really cool (completely solar powered) machines that freeze water to ice and connect it up with what's left of the north pole! every freeze takes a few days but they cover almost a mile of snow and ice! and there ae hundreds of them. hopefully they will make more to increase the production speed but yeah, that's my share on a positive thing about the modern world that I saw.

I heard Olivia Rodrigo's "Good 4 U" a couple weeks ago and it gave me hope for the future. Like, they get it - they know the hurt, too, and that was oddly comforting.

It depends on which country you are in. If you mean USA, then nah, not really.

I am constantly these days wondering how much time I have left, should I give a home to that needy pussy cat, will I be alive to look after it? I just do not know. No I am not a pensioner yet.
