“Make Me Suffer”: 40 Of The Most Painful Images Posted By This Online Community
Interview With AuthorDon’t we all like torturing ourselves a little now and then? The most immediate answer will likely be a firm handshake. But when it comes to a tragedy we witness on our morning commute or news of violence on social media, we suddenly feel compelled by a strong, unexplainable pull to stare at the sight.
Scientists have been investigating why we can’t look away from disasters and some have suggested it’s the preventative mechanism that gives us crucial information about the possible danger. Another study even found that we react to and learn more from negative experiences than we do positive ones.
Given those strange workings of the human psyche, it’s only fair that a subreddit like Make Me Suffer exists on Reddit, and that it’s home to a solid 1 million members. The community’s description keeps it simple, yet harrowingly effective: “If it hurts to look at, post it.” Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Scroll down for our interview with the amazing moderator team of the Make Me Suffer subreddit, who were happy to share some insights about their intriguing community.

Bloody onion fairies... Poor kitty, I would have taken you home straight away 😢
This is heartbreaking. I would have adopted that sweet fuzz-ball in a heartbeat. I do hope this gorgeous cat found loving forever home where she is spoiled beyond belief.
Choked me right up!! Before I saw the update, I was reaching for a tissue for my eyes while gagging on the lump in throat. Wow!!
Blobfish Are Not Actually That Ugly - Most Photos Are Taken After It Has Been Pulled Out Of The Water And Suffered Tissue Damage. Their Natural Habitat Is At Extremely Low Depths
I also looks a mess after being pulled from my natural habitat, the bed.
Poor blobfish! 😭 everyone laughed at how hilarious it looks but its actually dead 🙁
I've not the expertise or math to back this up, but I imagine the pressure difference is akin to putting a human on mars. Suddenly those blobfish pics are no longer fun to look at.
Actually, this off-the-cuff comparison isn't that far off! Blobfish live at a depth that is approx 120x the pressure at sea level. The pressure on the surface of Earth is approx 150x that of Mars. who knew.

Bored Panda spoke to the moderators, u/hwhouston517, u/LovelyAGQ, u/DeathAngel11, and u/MattShea of the subreddit. Turns out, the subreddit was created by MattShea, a popular gaming YouTuber with over 2 million subscribers.
“It was originally intended for his YouTube series titled 'Make Me Suffer' for a place for his subscribers to submit posts that would 'hurt' to look at. The subreddit gained thousands of subscribers in the days after its creation, mainly being a place for memes and comics intended to make you disgusted or in shock (but not too extreme),” the mods told us.
The creator of the subreddit, MattShea, recounted: “One day I decided to make a video on an old flash game called 'Duck Life' which for some reason ended up being a very popular video. For obvious reasons, I followed it up with some more videos on the sequels, and made some jokes about how I was only doing it for the viewers. One of them said they were happy to 'make Matt suffer' so one day I decided to invite my viewers to post links and images in my Discord server of things that would 'make me suffer.' After a while, using Discord for the series become impractical, and I wanted to see how things would go if I gave people the opportunity to vote on what they deemed 'sufferworthy' or things they wanted to see me react to.”
My Dad Had A Car Wreck. He Went Without A Bone Flap For 6 Months
I hope he is well now, looks like a miracle he is alive, glad he made it!
No, it's not a miracle. He was lucky, but that's the way the facial skull is designed. His frontal sinuses caved in completely as it looks, but they are just an air filled space and exist to make your skull lighter and protect the brain from harm. They worked fine here. There's still a layer of bone over his brain.
Load More Replies...I would wear a hat, and constantly pull it off to screw with people. "Is something wrong? Did that zit I had pop?"
My friend's dad had something like this, except he stayed in the hospital until the flap was back on, and yeah, his personality changed from being bad to WORSE. He's extremely materialistic now (in the sense, he didn't even show a single ounce of sadness when his sibling passed away except saying that he was glad she didn't have any loans) and has anger issues
Load More Replies...For those with warped sense of humor, I would have a blast freaking people out! Assuming no personality changes
Load More Replies...He had to be very strong. I hope he could see himself (not his temporary disfigurement) when he looked in the mirror, with self compassion. DIY Fanatic Proudly Shows Off Her Upcycled Drinks Trolley But Gets Absolutely Savaged For 'Ruining An Antique'
Honestly, apparently it's not even actually antique and if she found a dumb way to recycle-reuse it but she's actually using it, who Cares??? Why are people so rude like its her cart and her design lol. I personally dislike the design a lot but to shame them so much is just....
Load More Replies...Even if it wasn't an antique she's still in the wrong for such an awful chavy design! Who in their right mind would want that in their house?!?!
So tacky. I bet she has "Live, love, laugh" stenciled on a wall in her home.
This is when MattShea realized it’d be great to create something to reach people outside his niche, so the subreddit was born. “I designed the subreddit to be largely independent of myself, so people wouldn't say 'hmm, I don't know this person so I don't want to be a part of this' when coming across the sub. After my viewers got things moving, the rest was history,” he told us.
As time went on, the subreddit strayed from its original purpose and users started posting irrelevant content. The mod u/LovelyAGQ recounted: “At the time, I had noticed that a lot of posts that didn't really fit had started popping up, and a lot of posts from fellow users poking fun at and complaining about how often repetitive, ill-fitting memes would get posted.”
Life
Aaand tears, full flow, check. Come here kitty, we will love you forever!
I have a deep hatred of people who get pets and then discard them. If I were a vigilante superhero I'd go after these people.
It makes me so angry that some people consider pets a novelty and then abandon them when they're no longer convenient or a tiny baby. Yes my two cats were were adorable playful kittens. Now they are two adorable adult cats still happy playful and loved at 15 & 18 years old. My cats have moved with me to different parts of the country. My parents taught me pets are a lifetime commitment. They are part of the family.
so many parent buy animal for their kids and expected them to taking care of them
Especially the fact that often they do not know how to take care of them, and that kills animals and makes them suffer. For example the stories with goldfish... it just breaks my heart :'(
Load More Replies...This is what my old neighbors pretty much did to their cat (even looks the same). They're gone 90% of the time and just toss it outside to roam around the apartment complex and hide under cars. I had to move to another unit because they were nuts (long story), but once I make the big move out of here I'm going to take that poor cat with me because f*ck them, they're animal abusers.
A solid CURSE on anyone shallow enough to do this. An animal is for life.. That's 10 years MINIMUM. If you're not willing to put up don't bother to show up.
For the sad people: The comic actually has a plot twist and continues, showing that the cat is just playing in the trash. The owner calls it back inside then. :)
@Zedrapazia, that was fan art. The original comic is like the one shown here and is about not giving pets as a present and not dumping them.

And i was thinking how she can sit so relaxed with all those mosquitos on her
Load More Replies...Yes. Places with woods and lakes that have heavy snowfall in winter will generally end up with mosquitoes the size of f*****g Buicks come the spring thaw. Big enough to need a license tag. Hell, big enough to vote. Big enough to legally buy liquor.
I can't believe those eye lashes with the frost! I've never seen that before.
I wonder what mascara brand she uses on the left pic though. Such volume !
At the same time, the subreddit was starting to explode with popularity, and Matt, not having enough time to manage the subreddit by himself due to his YouTuber career, added more mods to help the subreddit maintain its quality. “As the sub grew even more popular and as Matt focused less and less on the subreddit, the subreddit slowly strayed from being about him and his YouTube channel, to being about the users and posting what makes you suffer the most,” u/hwhouston517 remembered.
The mod u/hwhouston517 was added as a sub moderator along with a batch of others. In 2019, the subreddit had around 300,000 members then, and was exploding in popularity, gaining 50k new members every month. In comparison, today Make Me Suffer has a solid 1M members and is a constantly growing community with a lot of exciting—meaning compelling, but hard to look at—content.
Bubonic Plague
Now, to be perfectly clear, they didn't really die of bubonic plague. They died of stupidity.
"In Mongolia, a couple died of bubonic plague on May 1 after reportedly hunting marmots, large rodents that can harbor the bacterium that causes the disease, and eating the animal's raw meat and kidneys – which some Mongolians believe is good for their health."

Popular culture is full of this. Look for flower carpets in Girona or fallas in Valencia, for example. And also performing arts, months of creation and rehersal to do some minutes of a thing that disappears when ending.
Load More Replies...Nothing says art should last forever like putting it on a chalkboard in a classroom that is in use. It was obviously always meant to be temporary and has lived its intended life.
That triggered me. I was just lying there talking to my mother waiting for the ambulance which never came so I had to make an 8 mile trip to the hospital like that. I had also broken 2 bones in my arm and completely dislocated my shoulder too. Fun times.

We're also part of a very diverse team, more than half our active mods being LGBT+ and even having a couple transgender mods on board.”
Antheraea Polyphemus... Basically A Tarantula With Wings
awww, don't be like that. it's only the unwarranted "tarantula" image that's squicking you out. they're fuzzy and friendly as they come. no fangs or anything; their only defense is the "eyes" on their wings to distract/confuse predators
Load More Replies...It's a moth, people! And a beautiful one at that! This is a perfect example of how bias affects your perception... desaturate the photo just a bit (they're very colorful) and plant in your brain that it resembles a tarantula, and suddenly a beautiful moth becomes a horrible tarantula with wings. (Keep this in mind when you decide not to vote for someone because of the vibe you get from them.)
Tarantulas honestly don't bother me, but I was curious if there actually were spiders with wings after seeing this image. Seeing all the responses that it was actually a moth, I looked it up. Yeah, it's adorable, just this image makes it look like a "flying tarantula" for some reason.

Load More Replies...THIS is why I don't exercise! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Jogger's spontaneous diarrhea is also a thing. Pretty sure jogging is an unnatural gait. Generally, we either walk (when unthreatened) or sprint (when threatened).
Oh totally! The runner's-runs. Yep. I'd always empty the void before I jogged. I've been stopped by something knocking at my door and have had to make a very awkward looking slow walk home to relieve myself. Lol.

Never mind the drywall, who selected the shortest screws on earth to hold those bracket rails up with? Considering their position, even without measuring the ones on the right and the left would have been screwed into wall framing if the screws were of an appropriate length.
Load More Replies...Not the collector's series Millenium Falcon! I built one- and still have it- and it took something like a week to finish. And that was during the summer.
A couple of years ago I saw a youtube video of a Star Wars/Lego fan (I believe), who dedicated his life collecting rare Star Wars memorabilia and rare limited edition legos and other models of ships and assembling them and puting videos on his tiny Youtube channel. One day somebody broke into his house and just broke everything. They didn't steal anything, IIRC, they just shattered each and every model. He was so devastaded and deeply depressed, he left his channel and decided to never collect anything and share his models with nobody. But the outpour of love was fantastic. People started a GoFundMe for him to cover some of the damage and so he could buy some of the models he had (or other ones), I believe even Lego reached out and send him some of their Star Wars models. I remember, that in a couple of days he returned to YouTube and thanked everybody for the support and later, I believe, he continued his work on his channel and continued his collection of memorabilia.
Ok, I googled a little bit and found the guy. He is republicattak on Youtube, he is now over a 1m subs and seems to be building and sharing his collection and keeping his channel up, which is fantastic news! Just in case anybody wondered and wanted to join him. (BTW, I am NOT a Star Wars fan at all, I never even saw a movie of the saga, not even one! Just know how big is fanbase and remember how hartbreaking the story was for the guy. Really, really glad he seems ok now!).
Load More Replies...Most importantly, we tried to figure out just why, according to the moderators themselves, so many people feel that unexplainable pull to look at unsettling pictures. The creator of Make Me Suffer subreddit, MattShea, said that humans are a bunch of weirdos. “We seem to enjoy being uncomfortable when it's something that we choose. Scary/gory movies are a great example of that. And as the origins suggest, people also like seeing other people being uncomfortable. We've also seen time and time again that nothing seems to foster engagement on the internet quite like negative emotions,” he said and added that it’s perhaps that's what made the subreddit so popular.
Meanwhile, another mod, u/DeathAngel11, believes that an answer to the question may forever remain a mystery. “But one thing will never change—Uncomfortable situations are a daily part of life that we all face. Sometimes a little bit of laughter and an appreciation for our morbid curiosity in a healthy way is just what we need.”

How were they both answers, and why is there being one random space correct?
Who doesn't put spaces in? To be fair it does make it a whole different number
This was likely a computer glitch. However: I've worked with teachers like that. Once I gave my students homework worksheets with directions which went something like: Circle the pictures that have a square shape. Put an X on the pictures that have a triangle shape." For whatever reason, some kiddos would do put the X on the squares and circle the triangles. But they got the concept, and marked all the squares and circles to show they knew the difference, so I didn't care. A first grade teacher on the staff said, "I would have marked the page wrong. They didn't follow the directions." GAAAAH.
The mod u/LovelyAGQ shared another illuminating explanation. “I personally think it is down to human nature. We have a natural inclination toward the morbid in one way or another, and while everyone has different limits, everyone gets some enjoyment out of satiating our morbid curiosity in that sense. Without having to put ourselves in danger or worry about someone else's safety, we can view 'morbid' or unsettling content online.”
The mod continued: “It's like that saying about 'watching a car crash, you want to look away but you can't'; We have effectively been able to replicate that feeling on this subreddit in the most fun and enjoyable way possible. We are all happy to continue doing this, and happy to keep people entertained!”
Fish Skin Can Be Grafted Onto Burns. It Recruits The Body's Own Cells And Is Converted Into Living Tissue Over Time
A bit creepy, but if that's true (first time I've heard of it) that's also a pretty cool thing.

Load More Replies...On the other hand, the Make Me Suffer subreddit is a lot less extreme than some others: “even our neighbors at r/MakeMeSufferMore are a lot more... well... unsettling than ours,” u/hwhouston517 told Bored Panda. “Since gore is banned here, it helps us keep the focus that this subreddit, as MattShea put it himself, was originally meant for 'fun suffering.' The subreddit was never meant to be too extreme, instead as a place where you could suffer and laugh at the same time. Though it's evolved a lot since the subreddit was focused about him, we are glad that it's kept its purpose of appeasing the people who like fun situations and moderate gore at the same time, as weird as it may sound.”
The moderator team also wants to thank their subreddit users, amazing subscribers and the readers of this article. “We are so grateful that they regularly provide such stellar and amazing content. We appreciate your time and the readers' time in taking an interest in us,” they said and added: “Happy suffering!”

Load More Replies...Dr. John Mayer, a clinical psychologist at Doctor On Demand, has been researching what happens to our brains when we see destruction and he identified that a particular process in our brains is the one to blame. “A disaster enters into our awareness—this can be from a live source such as driving by a traffic accident or from watching a news report about a hurricane, a plane crash or any disaster," he explained to NBC News.
"This data from our perceptual system then stimulates the amygdala (the part of the brain responsible for emotions, survival tactics and memory). The amygdala then sends signals to the regions of the frontal cortex that are involved in analyzing and interpreting data. Next, the brain evaluates whether this data (awareness of the disaster) is a threat to you, thus judgment gets involved. As a result, the 'fight or flight' response is evoked."

Why not just hold the baby? Surely it's simpler and not as heavy as lifting the stroller? Even if you don't particularly care if you drown your child.
What he's doing is dumb, but have you ever tried to strap a kid into one of those things? Especially if the kid doesn't want to go?
Load More Replies...Here in Australia there was a pier with no safety railings on it, and one day a pram with a baby strapped in it went over the edge, with a small child clinging to it. The father dived in to try and save them, and all three were drowned. I wish I couldn't imagine it as vividly as I can, but I can, and it never fails to upset me. This guy is a goddamn moron.
I have intrusive thoughts and thanks to those, I constantly use the safety strap in my stroller. I bet the family of that man wishes he had done the same. The safety straps should be mandatory as well.

Load More Replies...What could they possibly think would be that interesting to a child of that age that necessitated that. They don't know what they're looking at and they won't remember what they saw. Out of their minds to do that. Willfully putting your child in danger. And stupid to not realize the the level of development of the child's brain at that point. No biggie to just leave them on the ground. They won't notice nor feel left out of the experience.

Incredibly, "Witnessing violence and destruction, whether it is in a novel, a movie, on TV or a real life scene playing out in front of us in real time, gives us the opportunity to confront our fears of death, pain, despair, degradation and annihilation while still feeling some level of safety."
This phenomenon is also experienced in other situations, like standing at the edge of the cliff or when looking through the glass at a lion at the zoo. “We watch because we are allowed to ask ourselves ultimate questions with an intensity of emotion that is uncoupled from the true reality of the disaster.”

Student went to the bathroom and refilled his water bottle on the way back. It was slightly lighter than this. I sent a picture to the principal and gave him a new bottle of water.
Your school has old rusty pipes. If you run it a bit, it will turn clear. Schools are vastly underfunded nationwide, and this should not be acceptable, but it is.
Hooded Seals Inflate The Inside Of Their Noses To Impress Females
Like Elephant Seals, the males fight viciously with each other. The "impress-the-chicks"-stick comes later. At least they make some effort - the Elephant Seal just take what they want
Load More Replies...Oh, i see how it is. When they do it we we're all "cool, weird, etc." But when i try blowing my nostrils out to impress the ladies y'all call the cops.
Oy... if they could, they would ;p Guess we human ladies just have to settle for d**k pics

I'm no expert on eating chicken - being allergic to it does that - but these look barely touched? I'm guessing that is the point though.
You got it - they have taken one or two bites out of each wing, not exactly 'completely demolished'.
Load More Replies...I do not like eating those. If someone would force me I could not eat more then on the pic. I have a deep aversion of nibbling on bones and those nobbly ends, having been forced to eat gristle as a kid.... But it still hurts to think these will land in the trash. Poor chickens who had to die for this.
I hope it's a joke. Why even bother slaughtering if the animal is consumed like this.
This is a crime. A crime against tasty foods, and a crime against people who go without and are subject to seeing others waste
First and foremost it is crime against so many birds that died for nothing.

The Growth Of A Tick In The Span Of Two Weeks
With no comparison the animal I hate the most in the world..have absolutely no reason to be on this planet! Only causes problems and illness
Right! I hate no animal, insect, plant...will not kill them. Everything has it's place and its meaning, but these little bast**ds are for nothing. Nothing! Here is not even an animal that would eat them. Thanks to a basta** like that, my mother will never be without pain again in her life. BURN
Load More Replies...We used to have a dog. So this isn’t new to me. Ticks are quite gross. They bother me way more than spiders.
Even more attractive with the knowledge that inside the "tank" on the right is the warm blood of a living creature. Cough - Cough - GAG!!
*hurk* Bad enough I find them on my dog in all states - I refuse to look at those on the computer, too.
I used to get ticks a lot when I went camping as a kid, one of them left a scar when I was 8, and I still have that mark
Cockroach Cake
I am kind of impressed at the realism, but extremely relieved they don´t grow to be that big.
I know it's a cake. I love cake. But still...I don't think I'd taste it...
I just don't see how anyone could bite into that or even accept a piece. I'd run the heck out of that place

The Amount Of Cicadas In My Pool Skimmer After One Day
And to think, they waited 17 years to greet the sunshine then ended up as pool sludge. Awwwwww......
Let's hope they had wonderful dreams while they hibernated inthe ground.

Gross. There’s a horror anthology movie for kids called The Will(ies). One features a boy who likes to capture and torture flies. One day they get their own back and rip the boys arms and legs off. That will happen to you!

Put this in a shallow baking dish. Sprinkle flour in bottom of pan. Garlic salt it and pepper it. Cover with foil. Place in a 230 oven until heated through, after gelatin melts and the internal temp is 220, take off foil, raise temp to 350, brown the skin and serve. You can also add potatoes to the pan and they will cook, small potato pieces.

This is Reynaud's Phenomenon. My hands do similar, I have Reynaud's, though bright blue and orange is the colours mine go.
I got that, completely lose the use of my hands in the cold. Had a math final and I couldn't take it because my hands got to cold so I started sobbing hysterically in the middle of the test after trying for 30 minutes to use both hands to write. The professor took me to his office and put on his space heater, then let me take the final after all the other tests were done.
I have it too and it can hurt when they warm up again. It's the bloodvessels narrowing due to cold or stress. My mother and sister had/have it as well. Some people have it more severely than others.
It’s probably Reynaud's Syndrome, I have it and my hands do the same thing.

Say Hello To My Little Friend
All four of mine have done that. Needed surgery to remove them or dentist chair to remove the four molars next to each. I opted for the dentist chair and sacrificed my meat eaters. 30 years later I still have my wisdom teeth and boy do they pain me some! I tell ya there was no wisdom in my decision.
Load More Replies...All 4 of mine did that. One of them was so badly impacted, the dentist had to leave it there.
One of my wisdom teeth had been lodged up in my sinuses (I still have scarring in my mouth from where they took it out almost a year ago)

Same, only more bent. We learned that when the dentist tried to pull one out. Other 3 wisdom teeth were taken out in the hospital.
Did the idiot not take x-rays first? You can see nearly every detail of teeth with x-rays, so I don't understand how your dentist didn't see that! I wonder if they saw the problem, but tried doing the extraction regardless. Sadly, there are stupid, greedy, people in every profession. Sorry you had to go through all that. I hope you've found a better dentist since then.
Load More Replies...The three roots of one of my wisdom teeth were fused, but you couldn’t tell from the X-ray photo. The dentist pulled and pulled, but couldn’t get it out. In the end, he had to saw the tooth completely in half. I still shudder at the memory…
shouldn't they remove those by cutting them in half? i thought that's how they removed them.

A Car I Parked Next To
Have you ckecked if the driver was not in the trunk ? Like, for quite a long time ?
We bought a new car and my husband wanted to keep the old one for just in case. I told him it had been a few months so he should go out to start it and this is what it looks like. He didn't go in. Now it has been a year since we started it and I think the next step is just to put it up for sale. (After we eliminate the mold). Live in a swamp in Florida, not great for cars that don't get used.
The car has a leak, likely from a sunroof or even a light. Much cheaper to fix the leak than to clean that.
I am betting this is a set-up pic in junk yard. Water damage from a flood (or other event) or being left out in foul weather -- with broken or open windows -- for an extended period of time.
Disgusting people like this are EXACTLY why everyone needs to stay in the habit of keeping their hands clean long after Covid is over.

It's so funny that this subreddit was started by the YouTuber called MattShea as a joke with his community. He wanted his community to post suffer worthy pictures and he'd make videos reacting and suffering. Never would he thought that it would grow this much, let alone make it to big sites like Bored Panda. Time flies, it sure does.
