50 Of The Funniest And Cutest Pets’ Reactions To Trying Something They’d Never Tried Before (New Pics)
Parents love documenting their babies' firsts: their first bath, their first word, the first time they eat ice cream, the first time they ride a bike and more. But as you’ll soon find out, pet parents are no exception. Because even their fluffy, furry, scaly and feathery little ones deserve to be celebrated for trying something new.
Down below, we’ve gathered photos of the most adorable first times pets have experienced new things, and I’ll warn you right now: they just might melt your heart. From playing in fresh snow to trying delicious foods, this list is full of precious pet moments. Keep reading to also find interviews with Maggie Marton, of Oh My Dog blog, Dog Behaviorist Nick Jones, MA, and Lisa Stemcosky, CCBC, CPDT-KA, SBA, of PawLitically Correct. Rhodie's First Time Seeing Snow
My dog did the same thing! He loves snow! If it snows, he is going to find some way to get outside, and play in it. He even eats the snow. And ice. He loves cold food. He would love ice cream, but dogs can't eat normal ice cream.
I had a dog that loved to eat the snow, too. His favorite snow activity was trying to catch snowballs. If his hoomans weren't throwing them, he figured out how to make small ones with his nose, toss it up with his nose, and then play catch. Funniest thing to watch on snowy days.
Load More Replies...My parents had a toy Pomeranian. Murphy's first snowfall, he just stood in the doorway and looked. He wouldn't move. So Mom picked him up and carried him outside, where she dropped him "accidentally on purpose," Stuck in a sink or swim situation, Murphy discovered that snow was the greatest toy ever. From then on, he would run out to the yard immediately.
To gain more insight on this topic, we reached out to Maggie Marton, the woman behind Oh My Dog, and she was kind enough to have a chat with us. First, we asked Maggie why she thinks pet owners are so eager to capture all of our beloved animals’ first times. “New experiences create new memories! It's so fun to witness the joy, excitement, even trepidation--as long as it doesn't turn to fear--of a new experience. Capturing it allows you to relive it over and over again,” she told Bored Panda.
“Plus, new experiences give pet owners really fun stories to share of their beloved pets. For me, I love telling (and retelling!) the story of the first time we took our cat, Newt, outside on a long leash,” Maggie shared. “It's such an adorable, fun memory for us, and I always break out the pics to show as I tell!”

First Night At Home After Being Adopted
We also asked Maggie if our pets understand what’s going on when they do something for the first time. “Yes! And it's so important, especially as our pets age, to continue to expose them to new experiences,” she told Bored Panda. “They know and react to novelty just like we do.”
“They might feel excited or nervous or confused, depending on their lived experiences so far; for instance, a dog who loves to swim in a pool might be confused about going to the beach, but that same dog also might be more confident to test those waters than a dog who has never been swimming before,” Maggie went on to explain. “Dogs have a reputation for being more open to new experiences than cats, but if you love a cat who has an adventurous spirit, get her involved, too!”

Clara's First Trip To The Backyard. I Think She Liked It
She's literally taking it all in. A cat with their mouth open like that is using the organ in the roof of their mouth to sort through the odors in the air.
Not necessarily, they also open mouth pant when under severe stress. We'd have to see a video to know for sure.
Load More Replies...That looks like a stressed out cat. Cats don't smile as much as we want to anthropomorphise ....
Open mouth smelling.according to the owner ;the little bab stayed on their lap for about 20 min before running around
Load More Replies...I haven't taken Bouche out yet. My uncle is coming to reinforce the back deck. Then, out we go! I can't wait to see what Bouche will think of it all.
Cats open their mouths like that to be able to analyze scents better. In the roof of their mouths they have "vomeronasal organs". So she's not smiling, she's smelling very deeply, which makes sense with the bombardment a cat would get their first time outside :)

He Heard Me Sneeze For The First Time
This picture is absolutely priceless. It made my morning. Thanks kitty!
Bouche runs away when I have a coughing fit. I think maybe she thinks I'm yelling at her. She comes back immediately after the fit is over, though, so she's not traumatized.
My cats get startled when I sneeze. The little one also runs away lightning fast. I do sneeze kinda loud, so fair enough.
We were also curious if there’s any way to predict whether our animals will enjoy having new experiences, or if we just have to take them out and see for ourselves. “Exposure is key,” Maggie noted. “A pet who is used to experiencing new and different things will likely be more adaptable than one who spends his or her whole life at home and is suddenly taken to the ski slopes,” she explained. “If your pet hasn't had many new experiences, start small. Try a different park or visit a swimming spot. Then, expand from there. Just like people, all pets have different thresholds for what's comfy and what isn't. Honor your pet's. Try lots of different things, and don't force your pet to do something uncomfortable.”
Timber Got To Ride In The Front Seat Of My Truck For The First Time. When Asked If He Liked The Air Conditioner, This Was His Reply
Handsome golden you have there, he sits so eligent, nice and together.... My dogs.... Look unhinged at all times. And go for a ride makes them lose their minds. This pup, got his sht together
Never put a dog/cat/whatever in the front seat for security reason! Put it in a carrier on the rear seat, and for big ones in the trunk.
I do not have a trunk on my car because it's a hatchback. Plus in the summer it would be a huge NO since I live in the South they would have heat stroke by the time we make it to the Vets office. They ride strapped in the front or backseat depending on which cat is having to go to see their Doctor.

And as for how we can ensure that our pets are comfortable and not overwhelmed when provided new experiences, Maggie recommends that pet owners keep a close eye on their little ones. “If she seems timid, give her time and encouragement. If she seems scared, stop. I've seen too many people force their pet to do something that was frightening only to have it backfire,” she told Bored Panda. “Start small and build. Go slowly. Give your pet tons of praise (and treats help, too!).”
Nimbus Met Our Dog For The First Time. This Is Her Being Intimidating
Ok but can we acknowledge that nimbus is the most perfect cat name for that cat in the entire universe.
“New experiences are so good for people and pets,” Maggie added. “In humans, experiencing new things can improve our memories, our mood, and even the neural pathways in our brains. It makes sense that new experiences would do the same for our pets! Get out there and try something new; you'll both benefit!”

First Time Being Carried In The Arms After The Rescue
That is the face of pure bliss and happiness. I truly hope to adopt a sweet dog one day soon.
We also reached out to Dog Behaviorist and Dog Expert Witness Nick Jones, MA, to hear his thoughts on why we’re so excited to capture out pets’ firsts. “The bond an owner has with their dog is usually deep and long lasting, and to experience the world through the life and senses of a dog is a wonderful thing,” Nick told Bored Panda. “Who can resist laughing as a dog bobs up and down as it runs in long grass or charges through fresh snow fall or roots around in crisp leaves on the ground? Dogs are normally easy to read and especially when they are curious and excited by a new experience and witnessing this brings great joy to the owner.”

Load More Replies...Nothing fazes my cat. I have worn full costumes, from hairy wolf heads to the Scream mask, and he looks at me like "Ok Mom, really funny..."
Nick also assures dog owners that their furry friends can handle taking on new tasks and activities. “Provided that a dog has plenty of positive life experiences and a good degree of exposure to the world from a young age, it can cope with most new experiences without a hitch. And a well-balanced dog is able to have a new experience without concern for its welfare and reaction,” he explained. “Provided we are not overwhelming a dog and that the owner feels the dog can cope, then most life experiences can be provided to a dog without concern.”
This Was The First Time My Kitten Watched Our Christmas Tree Light Up
‘One day, that tree is gonna be MINE and MINE only… to destroy *insert evil kitty cackling sounds*’
Oh I remember that glazed over look right before she tried to murder the tree. She was ninja kitty and nothing could stop her. So all glass balls and anything breakable got packed away. Ninja kitty is around for two weeks of every year.. I'll NEVER forget this look before the destroyer ninja kitty took over..
I didn't do a tree this past year. I'm going to wait until Bouche is over her kitten energy, so probably in '25.

I'm feeling so much more relaxed just thinking about it and I believe I would be the one that would have to be adopted by them 😊
Puppy Met His First Box Turtle
“Most owners will already know the nature of their dog and how adventurous or otherwise the dog is,” Nick went on to note. “This basic understanding of the dog's character and ability to accept new experiences should be the measure to apply before carrying out a new experience where you might think twice in the sense that it may overwhelm the dog. Most dogs embrace life and all the variety it brings, so with a little preparation and planning, by all means take your dog to the beach or out in the snow and enjoy the experience.”

And when it comes to how to introduce a new experience to your pet, Nick says it’s important to have a feel for what your dog can cope with and to consider that before making any big leaps. “Think of the experience you'd like to expose your dog to as a number of chain links that start with the first link and end with the last one,” Nick told Bored Panda. “Be sure to move forward one link at a time and to build on the last positive experience that you had with the dog. You're building until you are at the last link and the process is complete, and [ensure] that your dog is enjoying the process as you go.”

Load More Replies...“Dogs are able to cope with a wide range of experiences in life. Most pet dogs will enjoy a relatively relaxed lifestyle, but we know that dogs can be trained to sniff out cancer cells, to jump out of planes attached to a parachuter in the military, to guide blind people or to hunt for game,” Nick noted. “This adaptability makes dogs the perfect companions for people in the modern age, but for any dog to achieve anything like this level of achievement, it will need a progressive socialization and training program, combined with a balanced leadership style to bring the best out of the dog.”

My cat regularly tries to save me from the Most Evil Water by screaming at me in the bathroom.
So does mine. I try not to let him in if one of us is having a bath because he sounds so concerned!
Load More Replies...I have a husky/lab mix and he is terrified when I take a bath. He will husky scream, pull my arm do everything he can until I get out. Then he will put all is body weight on me to push me out of the evil room. If I dont let him in the bathroom with me, he will stay at the door and husky scream... No relaxing baths for me anymore.
Bouche will play in the (dry) tub, and sometimes chills on the (dry) shower chair. She's been in the tub when I turn the water on, and doesn't mind wet paws, but yesterday, when I stood up to adjust the chair, Bouche jumped on it. I started to sit down, and felt her. She jumped off, I sat. I thought she got out of the tub, so I reached to turn on the shower spray, and Mrrp? She's standing on the tub edge against the wall. I've never put the spray on while she's been IN the tub, and I don't heal well. So I had to pick her up and put her down on the open side so she could escape without scratching me to bits. She was quite offended that I made her get out of her bathtub just so I could make rain. She stuck her head around the curtain and glared at me for the entire bath!
My two cats and one doggo all seem to love water when they’re having a water fight in the bathtub with rubber duckies. However at bath time all of them miraculously zoom around to the most sneakiest place possible and scream
My cat watches me in the shower, and as soon as I open the door to get out, he nips in and starts licking up the water left in the tray. He gets fresh water in his bowl every day but won't go near it, he obviously prefers it lukewarm and soapy.
One of my cats loves drinking from my (and only mine) water glasses on the coffee table, and the younger one has started copying him. They have filtered water and I get mine from the sink!

Load More Replies...When I first got my cat at age 7, she wanted to be with me at all times, even in the bathroom. I refused to allow her in the shower, though, and she would fuss and paw the shower door, convinced I was having all that fun in there without her. So, I let her in one day and turned on the shower. She is now content to wait OUTSIDE the shower!
Lisa also says that our felines do understand when they see something new or experience something novel. "They may be curious and want to investigate it, or they may be fearful of it. It often comes down to previous experiences of similar situations, during their critical period of development," she explained.
And although certain activities, such as swimming and playing in the snow, are often more associated with dogs, there's always a chance our cats will love them too. "There are some cats that may enjoy these things. Some breeds are known to like water, like the Turkish Van," Lisa told Bored Panda. "Some cats have bolder personalities are up for an adventure." In an email, Lisa even shared adorable photo of her cat, Davey, on his first snow day, and he appears to be having a wonderful time.

Oliver Is Unsure Of What To Do With His First Time Under The Christmas Tree
When it comes to how our cats will respond to new things, Lisa says, "It’s a combination of nature versus nurture. If you start out with a kitten and expose them, in a slow and positive manner, to things like baths, harness walks, hiking, boating, they’ll be more likely to enjoy them as they get older. But nature, genetics, is always at play. Some cats may have a predisposition to be extremely fearful of novel situations, despite exposing them in a slow and positive way."

I Took My Dog On His First Boat Ride
Me too. I had a step-brother who unfortunately had to intentionally drown his dog to keep the dog from drowning him when his boat sank in a bad storm at sea. The dog normally swam fine in the ocean so he never really thought to need one. Makes me cry every time I think about it. 😥

My wire-haired terrier, Tucker, was physically not a handsome dog. His fur was thin and rather ugly. Of course I didn't adopt him for the fur, and I never told him. After I'd had him about a year (I'd adopted him as an adult), my friend took him to the groomer as a birthday present for me. He came home shampooed, brushed, clipped, and all, with a kerchief tied around his neck. He pranced around the house like a king for several days, because he KNEW he looked good! It was the cutest thing ever!
I feel like I already follow my dog around with a camera constantly because I find everything she does to be adorable, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for any new experiences she has from here on out. My Indoor Cat's First Time Experiencing Heights, And He Instantly Regretted It

When Mom And Dad Take You To The Dog Park For The First Time
Yeah. Key word "well adjusted". Our last dog I would have loved taking him to the dog park, but he hated car rides and it wasn't worth stressing him out. His reaction every time he heard me ask if he wanted a walk more than made up for it, though.
Load More Replies...I recommend that your dog going to dog parks should be taking some sort of monthly deworming pill for at least roundworms and hookworms. I was just 'at' an online meeting on parasites and the vet giving the seminar said that 70 to 90 percent of dog parks have parasite infestations: giardia to hookworms to roundworms to whipworms or a combination. I don't take my dogs to dog parks (and not just because they are not socialized).

First Bath
That poor thing. Bathing cats is unnecessary except for medical reasons. And this "breed" has a horribly deformed skull. It's gonna have trouble breathing and teeth problems a lot.
If your cat rolls in shít it needs a bath. You don't know the story behind this bath. Maybe he has fleas or something.
Load More Replies...I thought you weren't supposed to get them wet. And no bright lights. And no feeding after midnight.
Oh, I think you discovered the reason for the mystery bath. They just wanted more kitties.
Load More Replies...Is bathing (long haired?) cats necessary for their fur? Sure, especially long haired dogs need a bath once in a while but I never heard that cats need more than brushing? I am asking out of curiosity. Anyway someone is probably going to find mice heads in their bed from now on... 😹
Cats don’t need bathing except for medical reasons. Unfortunately a lot of dog owners, or inexperienced-with-cats vets, seem to think they need bathing. Drives me nuts.
Load More Replies...My and my son's two cats as well as our two dogs were exposed to a specific type of mite (from a Raccoon, and they spread it among themselves) that required a bath with peroxide, borax, and maybe something else that had to stay on them for 10 minutes wet - we had to keep applying it. My daughter-in-law and I spent a total of 2 hours in an enclosed shower with not at happy cats and dogs applying the solution, keeping them from escaping and then rinsing the the solution from their coats; both of us had to go to bed afterwards. Note - we got the recipe from the Vet.
Why do you wash cats? They do a better job themselves. Their saliva had involved to give extra protection to their fur and skin. You can even deflea without need to wash them
First Nail Trimming Session
What are you doing?! (Looks around for help) They're taking my weapons!
guys please dont downvote Raelene Christie. They're just sharing their opinion and are a bit confused. that's all i have 2 say before i get backlash
I feel trimming cats' claws is not really necessary. However, it is preferable to declawing, which is inhumane torture and no reasonable person agrees with it.
If you have an indoor cat, the nails do not wear down sufficiently on their own. The nails can get too long or too sharp and they can get stuck in things. That could lead to tearing or breaking of the nails, which could be very painful for the cat.
Load More Replies...My older cat is fine with having his nails trimmed, and will just sit and let me do it. But I have to hold my little cat in my lap like this (only a bit more firmly—-she’s not a kitten, she’s two years old and very wiggly) to trim her nails.
Why would you do that to a cat? You are basically hobbling them. I know they can be destructive. But you are taking their ability to do 90% of what cats do. I'm sorry for the rant but cats are still carnivorous hunters and need their teeth and ckaws.
They are not declawing them. Only trimming them done a little.

My Chihuahua adored coffee. He would do acrobatics trying to get to it. We had to make sure we always used lidded coffee cups. RIP sweet Beaux 🧡
Load More Replies...Large amounts of citrus fruit, when indigested, can indeed be toxic for dogs, smaller amounts can lead to vomiting and some such. I don't think a lick will do any harm, but of course as a dog owner you need to be aware of the potential danger of such fruits.

Never ever let your dog stand on an escalator, carry the dog: their claws can get caught in the escalator and tear off.
When My Dog Ravioli Saw His Puppies For The First Time
I wish people would stop breeding massively brachycephalic dogs that have breathing problems and have to give birth via caesarian section as the puppies' heads are too large to pass through the birth canal. Brachycephalic dogs that struggle to breathe aren't "awwdorable", they're suffering because humans want an ✨aesthetic✨
I agree. It’s cruel what people do to animals just for cuteness. They have to suffer their entire life. But I must say. That is a very proud father
Load More Replies...They’re cute! But I thought these doggo breeds have health problems
Please spay and neuter your pets. Thousands are killed every day in shelters across the country.
People often say that “millions” of dogs and cats are euthanized every year in the US. The most reliable information I found puts it at less than 1 million and that decreases every year. The worst way to surrender your pet is to PETA. Their “shelter” in Virginia has close to 100% murder rate and that’s by policy. If they pick up a surrendered animal it won’t even get to the shelter but will be killed and often dumped in a handy dumpster. I don’t know if they have a shelter in Los Angeles but I know they murder healthy animals there too. PETA is an evil organization that’s misguided by Ingrid Newkirk. There will always be a need for breeding because of allergies and working dogs doing the job they were bred for, at the very least. That doesn’t mean that just anyone should be breeding pets but there’s a difference between responsible breeders and pet mills. Get rid of the pet mills and a lot of the problems start to go away.
It's a pity that so many people buy into the PETA spiel. Nobody believes me.

That's kibble, it's cat food. We can argue about the nutritional value of most cat foods but they're technically all at least the bare minimum for cats. Especially those that are formulated for kittens.
Load More Replies...Firstly, don't give cats milk. Most of them are lactose intolerant. Secondly, serve their food on a flat plate. Bowls can interfere with their whiskers.

Yes. I have friends who own a mama cat. She’s had about 9 litters now, and she recently died. They don’t see cats as worth anything, and dropped them off by a random barn, left for dead. The mama kept reproducing with a random stray. They let the kittens run away. And they toss them a round like dolls. I’ve voiced my concerns many times, but they don’t seem to listen.
Load More Replies...Please spay her! Thousands of cats and dogs are killed every day in shelters across the country.
probably 2 different dads with that one of a different color which is fairly common. Now spay your cat and make it her last. There are too many in shelters. And keep her inside.
There's enough cats in shelters or living feral already - not all kittens will find good homes. Plus, unneutered cats are more likely to wander and get lost or injured. Females kept inside when in heat are noisy and lose condition if they can't mate. Both sexes spray more if unneutered. Unneutered females are more likely to develop breast cancer and can develop an infected womb.

Please don't take your dog to a dog park! Talk with your vet about the diseases your dog can pick up there. Not everybody vaccinated their dogs. Canine flu is highly contagious, amount other diseases. Some people do not believe in vaccinations at all. There is illness via dog feces, which is all over the park- doesn't matter if everyone picks up (never gonna' happen), there are still small amounts of poop left on the ground. Please talk with your vet.
In many cities dog parks are the only place that dogs can be allowed off of their leads to exercise, play and socialise. As long as your dog is up to date with their vaccinations they are at no more risk in a dog park than they are anywhere else other dogs go.

Giving My Cat A New Kind Of Treat For The First Time, And I Think She Liked It
Jebus, you're not kidding - and my mistake was giving them to the two most food motivated cats on the planet (but at respectively 9 and 10kg of solid-packed muscle each, they're the house feline equivalent of gym-bros) never in my life seen so much intense problem solving from two (already too clever for anyone's own good) cats...I half expect them to start making small spears and banging rocks together any day now... in search of the almighty churus, they have opened cabinets, opened child-locked cabinets, opened a gamma-sealed 5 gallon bucket (the twist on top), opened the fridge, the freezer, the chest freezer, turned doorknobs, and still found them. I know they're communicating with each other - I did a test at one point where i let one see where I'd put a few away (I can't stash them all at the same place) He went and got the other, led him straight to the cabinet, they sat and chirrped back and forth for a minute, like they were hashing out a plan, with me watching (continued)

There are so many people on here who say things like this: 'Make sure your cat never has kittens again!' 'This poor animal is suffering because of its breed!' 'Animals shouldn't be bathed unless really needed!' 'Why are you making this poor animal suffer, even though it's clearly nothing abusive and just some light fun, and this animal probably likes it anyways?!'
