If you're a horror movie fan, you probably think that nothing good can come from rummaging about inside the walls of an old house (remember The Conjuring or The Boy?). Luckily, we're here to change your mind!
You see, some folks have found some pretty fascinating and interesting antiquities in their attics, basements, or some old forgotten closets. There's a group on Facebook titled "Things Found in Walls - And Other Hidden Findings" where people share all kinds of unique finds, not just those that come from inside their home's walls.

Amber Glass Marble. Found Under Dirt Just Outside My Basement Door. Was Gardening, Found It Sitting Right In Front Of Me After A Good Rain
Ah you just reminded me of the really cool marbles I had when I was quite young! Most were my dad’s from when he was a kid. Absolutely no idea where they are now :(
Load More Replies...Reminds me of last year when I was re-doing the bricks around our side garden, I found a very old domino piece. Don't know exactly how old, but it is obviously antique

When My Dad Passed Away Recently, I Found These Things. They Belonged To His Older Sister That Passed Away At The Age Of 16 In 1940. I’ll Show You Guys More Later If You’d Like
Tragedy that she died so young - I wonder if OP's dad kept them out of grief/to remember her by. If OP doesn't want to keep them, OP should find an appreciative collector of this kind of thing in order to keep their aunt's legacy alive :)
How wonderful! My paternal grandmother was a doll collector, so all of those photos of doll collections that squick so many people out? I'm sitting here going, "Oh, Nana had one of those and two of those...". I grew up playing with so many dolls, and she would dress some of them in clothes I had outgrown. I've had a lifetime to love dolls, so it's always seemed odd that a lot of people have such negative reactions to doll collections. Nana's house was a magical place for me. Little girl + endless dolls = bliss.
I'm one of those people who doesn't much like humans or even like being a human (had a very abus!ve childhood, but we always had pets, and the pets loved me unconditionally, so I have always felt closer to animals than to people) - so I was not fond of dolls of any sort as a child and preferred stuffed animals (I still have my stuffed German Shepherd I got when I was 5 - he is 38 years old now!) However, I've never thought dolls/doll collections are creepy unless they're the kind of dolls that look WAY too realistic (like those ReBorn dolls.) I wonder if some other people who dislike dolls dislike them for the reason I do - because they are human in image and they creep us out in a fundamental way.
Load More Replies...My Electricity Was Out Yesterday So I Decided To Pull Out A Book To Read To Save My Phone Battery
I had bought the book at a used bookstore some time ago. I discovered this old money among the pages of the book.
Wait; the bill at the bottom says both, “Japanese Government,” and, “Ten Pesos”. What’s the deal with that?
That is probably from the time when Japan occupied the Philippines where the unit of currency is in pesos. I was told that it so devalued that you practically have to bring a suitcase of money just to go grocery shopping.
Load More Replies...These are historical currencies from different countries and eras. Deutsche Reichsbank: The notes labeled as “Reichsbanknote” and “Tausend Mark” as well as “Fünfhundert Mark” date from the time of the German Empire or the Weimar Republic. The “Tausend Mark” Reichsbanknote from 1910 was initially worth 1000 gold marks, but lost much of its value during the hyperinflation of the 1920s. The value of Reichsbank bills can vary greatly today, depending on their condition and rarity. Deutsche Rentenmark: The “Eine Rentenmark” banknote originates from the German Reich and was introduced in 1923 to replace the paper mark during hyperinflation.
Japanese military currency: The banknote with the inscription “The Japanese Government” and “Ten Pesos” was issued in occupied territories such as the Philippines during WWII. Chinese military currency: The characters and the value indication “2” is probably Chinese military money or early Chinese Yuan currency.
Load More Replies...Another reason to love old, second hand books. You never know what you'll find.
why would the japanese government print folding money in english, with no japanese characters on the bill?
Hiding items in the walls of a house may seem bonkers, but it's actually a practice that has a long history behind it. As Joseph Heathcott, an architectural historian and urbanist who teaches at the New School in New York, explained to the New York Times, this practice is called 'immurement'.
It's an ancient practice that stretches across many different cultures and civilizations. "The history of Freemasonry traces its origins to the rituals of concealment by masons, sealing up secrets in their buildings," he explained. Take the artifacts Egyptian Pharaohs entombed in pyramids, or ritual objects in the walls of Roman villas.
I Pass By This Old Mailbox Every Day
The old rusty box is nailed to an oak that has to be 150 years old. After years of passing it by, I decided to open the box to see if anything was inside. After all, there isn’t even a house nearby to which it could serve anyway. Any home it serviced long ago is torn down, I’m sure.
I noticed an old letter inside, as you can see in picture #2. I looked at the postmark date, and it said July 7, 1903! Due to age and moisture, the addressee on the envelope was not readable, so I opened up the envelope hoping to find some local history and a good story I could share with you. Here is what the letter inside said. “We have been trying to reach you about your vehicle’s extended warranty.”
“We have been trying to reach you about your vehicle’s extended warranty.” tumblr_nht...9e6430.jpg
Extended warranties did not exist in 1903. A quick search cleared up that porky pie

Long Time Member First Time Poster. I'm Excited To Finally Have Something To Post
While this wasn't found in a wall, but inside a local thrift store.
I husband and I live in Canada in the same city that he grew up in. He and I were in a local thrift store a few weeks ago looking for things for our home. He stops infront of me and says "holy s***"! I look up to see this picture.
He goes on to tell me that his mother used to have this hanging on her wall when he was growing up. He took this picture and sent it to my brother-in-law, who showed my mother-in-law. Low and behold it's the same exact picture. Same frame, same wire on the back, everything.
This picture was a wedding gift to my mother-in-law and went missing about 25 years ago.
He sent it to his brother-in-law so I think he did buy it.
Load More Replies...She had it hanging on her wall for many years. That answers the question for me.
Load More Replies...Granted, immurement also meant burying a person alive, sometimes as a form of t*****e and punishment. However, sometimes it was performed on purpose or for ascetic reasons, with people even volunteering to be buried alive.
In Ancient Rome, the Vestal Virgins were immured if they broke their chastity vows as form of punishment. In 1660, Indian prince Shah Shuja and his family were "closely confined in their apartments" and left to pass away from hunger.

While Moving Your Couch I Put A Golf Ball Size Pole In Our Hallway Wall
I was missing a set of keys and thought my kids might have dropped them in the hole, I cut a lower hole and found all this, no keys but it made my day.
I’m just wondering what a golf ball-sized “pole” would look like.
Load More Replies...Reminds me of the hole my toddler put in the wall of our apartment by accident. The last time I cleaned it out I used a thin piece of cardboard as a fix until I could get the things the properly fix it. I believe I forgot about it after awhile and moved out with the hole still sealed with cardboard. Oops
In Mongolia, people used immurement to bury their Khan. According to the traveler Ibn Battuta, "a large sepulcher was dug for him under the earth, in which a most beautiful couch was spread, and the Khan was with his weapons laid upon it. With him they placed all the gold and silver vessels he had in his house, together with four female slaves, and six of his favorite Mamluks, with a few vessels of drink."

When The Walls Consists Of Things
From a Norwegian newspaper in november 1947. Roughly translated: "In a time with few houses, one must make do with what is available. In the US empty ammunition boxes are sold for 24 cents a piece to war veterans. For a price of 3000 dollars one can build a practical four rooms house. Here are some carpenters building a house of boxes."
Wonder if any of those houses are still standing? 3000 USD in 1947 is about 41k USD today.
I have written about this previously, but it seems appropriate to mention here. I bought a house that had been built in the 1920s, and upon opening the walls for construction, had tons of old ammunition fall out of them. It was pretty wild to see.

Anyone Good With Antiques, Typewriters Specifically, On Here?
I Have A Company Here Doing The Insulation In Our Attic And They Needed To Cut Some Access Holes In The Closet Upstairs For, I Don't Know What For, But Anyway, Look What They Found In The Wall!
It's filthy, but it looks like it's just dusty, not rusty. I think it's amazing, but how do I go about cleaning it so that I can get it appraised ? I wonder what year it is, I looked it up, it looks like the 1920's possibly. I can't find a serial number yet, just the patent number. This s****r is HEAVY and filthy. Looks like I have a project on my hands, so fun !! But I need some advice on how to go about cleaning it.
I believe I saw an HGTV show where a decorator actually bought one of these antique typewriters for her client who happens to be a playwright... So clean it and sell it!
Agreed! We have an old (but not as old as this fellow) IBM typewriter from the days when my dad used to work for IBM. It's one of their Selectric models from the 80s and it is a gorgeous shade of blue. I used to write stories on it; I love that old heavy barstid. My mom wanted to get rid of it recently and I told her she was going right into the bin with it if she tried XD It's currently chilling at our family business's office, but I'm strongly considering bringing it to my house, since I don't trust my mom to keep her word that she won't toss it out XD It's probably not worth much $$$, but has incredible sentimental value to me since it belonged to my dad. I love PCs/MS Word/etc., but oh man, the glorious sound of a typewriter's keys striking... nothing quite like it XD
Load More Replies...I am 100% sure that if he sent that to Tom as a gift he would get the best typewritten letter back!
Load More Replies...Use a small paint brush to dust as much dirt off of it as you can. Then give it a good oiling.
Maybe canned compressed air for the rest - I hope the force of the air won't damage it.
Load More Replies...Whatever you do to try and clean and lubricate it, do not use WD-40. In mechanical typewriters it attracts dust and the mechanism will get gummed up.
Compressed air. No cleansers, detergent, polish, or anything else until *after* it's appraised or you may destroy any value it has.
Tom Hanks is an avid collector of typewriters. If it's something special, he might be interested.
What a cool find! I hope you are very careful. I would research what cleaning products would be safe for all surfaces. I'm sure you can start with some canned air and make short work of the dust. You may need some Q-tips for stuck on dirt and cobwebs. I would be hesitant to disassemble it unless you are very mechanically inclined. I'm not sure who you could take it to, I'd bet Antique Typewriter Repair shops are probably pretty thin on the ground just about everywhere.
But enough of this nightmare fuel—let's explore some of the things these people found in their houses, shall we?
First off, the physical Playboy Mansion key that one person found in their home. Did these really exist? Yes, up until 1966 Playboy made metal keys shaped like a rabbit head. Apparently, they're worth a pretty penny too, since you can buy them. Some are worth $690, while others are worth a mere $115.
Found These Things At The Flea Market!
Once I opened them and found a century of family documentation, I knew I had to find its owners. They sold me everything for 8 bucks, I only found a few names to work off of in the photos and papers.
It dates possibly anywhere from the 1800s to 1970s. The seller said they bought storage that wasnt paid after a woman passed away and it wasnt paid, her son refused to talk with anyone and they were informed he was a paranoid c*******d- which is normal for this area.
So Im trying for other family members. Anything would help!
Update: The great great grandaughter of the owner to those photos was found! She was incredibly gracious and said she never knew they existed. They are calling a family meeting and gonna try to find out more! Wild she lived 9 minutes away
She took my name and number too in case they need more info
It's a US Air Force commemorative ring, either yellow gold and garnet or yellow metal and zirconia (without seeing a hallmark it's impossible to tell from a photo). They are bought by service members rather than being awarded to them.
I see that this is an Air Force ring but at first glance I just thought it was a senior/college ring. Is that still a common practice? Just curious
I got a ring when I graduated high school. It had a dolphin on one side (our mascot) and the other side was a girl kicking and stars coming out. It was supposed to be for participating in kickboxing as a sport, but I just thought it looked cool.
Load More Replies...American college ring, often gold and in the UK they can sell for anything from £100 to £300. I bought a couple in The Lanes in Brighton 30 odd years ago just because I like American football and would love to own a Super Bowl ring. This looks in quite good condition because the stones aren't usually up to much and are easily scratched.

In the 60s, the keys became keycards. They had the name of the member of the club on them and granted access to all Playboy clubs. All you had to do was present the key to the Door Bunny and you would be let inside. For some, owning the key was merely a status symbol. Only 21% of the key holders ever went to a club.

Load More Replies...Hello Guys, Can Anyone Help Me Know If This Pocket Watch Has Any Value Today?
It's a good quality movement but the case is only gold-plated and the watch isn't old. Piasso only dates back to 1982. Companies buy generic Swiss-made movements (the working parts), put them into mass-produced cases and add a chapter ring (the bit with the numerals) with the company name on it. There is very little value in second hand watches of this type.
Everything has value. Sometimes it's in the negative, like my ex, but still. Edit: Or would a negative value then become a liability? Hmm.

Load More Replies...Historians say that their makers weren't skilled, and today, we can't identify who exactly made them. Some speculate that they may have been used in burials or for religious practices. The potters also could've been inspired by "the complex responses of people attempting to live and maintain their personal identities under harsh conditions."

I used to be a carpet fitter and played semi-pro football/soccer. In about 1989 I was taking up some old Lino to fit new vinyl in a customers house. May 28, 2016 "Thomas Kennedy, 50, has now been granted parole without civil confinement from the Clinton Correctional Facility after serving over 27 years for the murder and sexual assault of Melody Wilson in August 1987. The 9-year-old child's body was found hidden in tall weeds in what was then called "Squaw Island." (It has since been renamed "Unity Island.") Kennedy was 21-years-old at the time of the killing. During his trial, it was revealed that he had killed Wilson when she cried out after being raped and sodomized. The child's body was found with multiple stab wounds and her throat cut. Defense attorneys' argued for an insanity defense but Kennedy was found liable for his actions and sentenced to 25-years to life in jail. Erie County Prosecutors have now been notified that Kennedy has been granted parole without civil confinement. Kennedy was also registered as a Level-3 Sex Offender - those with the highest probability of committing a repeat offense."

Funny story (OK, not really): Back in the 70s a friend had one of those that he kept his weed in. He liked it because at one time an ounce(?) of weed was referred to as a "lid" because it neatly fit in one of these cans and when carried in your shirt pocket just the lid would show.

Anyone Know If This Is Some Type Of Superstition Or Something.... Or Maybe Just A Bored Kid Who Found Some Pennies?
Is it possible the coins were inserted to stop the floorboards squeaking as they rubbed against the baseboards when walked on?
Actually, this dates back to Victorian times, they would be placed for each dead person they knew, if a murder happened in the house, if the person living in the house was a m******r they would place a penny per victim. Or they thought the house was haunted and the pennies were gifts to keep the spirits pleased. (I am a massive Victorian history fan, read too many books and a live in a Victorian house!)

Load More Replies...In 1920 you could have actually bought something using just a single penny. Geez, when I was a very young kid in the 60s five pennies were definitely enough to buy a candy bar or a pack of chewing gum. In fact, a couple of stores here in my hometown still sold penny candy by the piece. Hard candy, good for a sugar fix.
sorry to say its not worth much more than it did when minted. In fact, a huge number of the wheat back pennies are gobbled up by "preppers" who then extract the copper. When the memorial cents came around they replaced the copper with nickel. There are some VERY valuable Lincoln cents this one, however, is not. If you have a 1909-S VDB in uncirculated condition you have a lottery win there. that penny is worth $2000.00 plus or minus.
I have a collection of wheat pennies, not sure what the oldest one is dated
In eastern Nebraska, USA, these pennies are referred to as "wheat straws".

The paint and details on the head was completely worn smooth and looked shiny polished. The hands were also missing paint I am assuming someone back then was rubbing it for some reason.

My Father Got This From An Estate Sale In The 1970’s
The canvas was hand nailed to the frame so I am guessing it’s pretty old? It was in a cabin on the yellow river in Lithonia, Georgia. Everything in it was very elegant and expensive. The 22x18.5” painting was in a huge gorgeous gold frame that he removed and reused. I kept the painting when he was going to throw it away. Any ideas on the painters name? The letters aren’t legible to me.
