From nicotine to social media, we’ve gathered some of the most spot-on responses below, so be sure to upvote the toxic things you’d like to have less of in your life. Back in 2016, the US elections gave enough fodder in my news feed to repeatedly trigger me most of any day. It was tough, and so I deleted all my platforms. The hardest was FB. They required me to use my laptop, NOT my phone to complete the process. After all the crazy hoop jumps, it then informed me that it would remain unactive for 2 weeks and I could feel free to login anytime during that period to reverse the deletion. I never logged back on. What's scary is scientifically, it can take two weeks to make or break a habit and the pull of addiction would be too strong to deny and just reactivate it. That's $#itty.

Social media can be both an amazing way to keep in touch with friends and family around the world, however, it can also be a toxic tool for comparison. There have been multiple psychological studies that speak about how social media can make people who suffer from ADHD, anxiety, and depression feel like they are in a constant state of comparison. It can be extremely addictive and only shows us a very curated version of someone’s life.

My argument would be that it's inevitable. In any ecosystem, if there is a niche, then something will come along to fill it. It will be interesting to see how this Tik-Tok ban plays out.

We (here in the U.K.) can a least take some solace in the fact that at the last census the ‘believers’ were in a minority. We are moving away from doctrine written by powerful, rich men and starting moves to separate the church elders from the Lords. It’s going to take a while but from tiny acorns giant oaks grow!

Again, in the 50's, the fear of commies got President Ike and others to add "God" officially to the Pledge of Allegiance. They thought commies didn't necessary believe in God and this would perhaps separate the good guys from the bad.

I never understood that. Jesus wasn't American, British, etc. Those nations did not even exist in his time. Christianity is (or should be) separate from nations. "Be in the world, but not of the world," "give God what's God's, and Caesar what's Caesar's" etc.

I've honestly never understood this. They are ordinary people doing a job that puts them in the public eye. Doesn't make them better or worse. They are a mix, some good, some bad and all the varieties in between. Loved them in a film? Or in an interview? You still don't know them. They could also be amazingly good people but they might not be your cup of tea to spend an evening with.

It's pack hierarchy dynamics, hard coded into most people's genetics. Those seen as higher up the tree of success drive emulation and an attraction... We want to be in their group. This led to survival over millions of years but doesn't work so well now.

That’s not really a modern day issue.. Once upon a time, people worshipped and idolized gods. They built temples and statues for the gods, and worshipped them. They were their idols. Jesus was a celeb of some sort too, you know? Athletes in Ancient Greece were welcomed home as heroes, had songs and poems written in their honour, and received free food and gifts from those seeking celebrity endorsement. Ancient Rome similarly applauded actors and notorious gladiators, and Julius Caesar appeared on a coin in his own lifetime . Then you have people like Charlie Chaplin, Marlena Dietrich, Einstein etc.Hitler was a celebrity when you think of it. Women were literally fainting before Elvis.Lennon. Jackson I think worshipping someone/something is in our nature, unfortunately

Not a modern problem. See: All of human history. We're kinda stupid. Sometimes we're kept that way... but seometimes even the educated elites of various eras and nations were dumb AF. E.g., European male doctors refusing to wash hands b/c misogyny blinded them to the fact female midwives lost fewer patients b/c they *washed up*.

    Hannah M
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

You're right, but I'd like to point out that misogyny wasn't the initial reason they didn't wash their hands; it later contributed to why they refused to change despite all the evidence, but it wasn't the original cause. Initially, it was because of two factors: first and foremost, germ theory had not developed yet, so they couldn't understand that infection could be carried from one patient to another via the doctor post-op, and secondly there were times where having bloodied hands were kind of a status symbol among doctors, I guess as an indicator of the kind of work they were doing. But of course, the less deaths the midwives had should've indicated that hygiene helped, but this was ignored because the midwives had little to no formal training, whereas all the doctors were 'qualified'

The UK ships the majority of its plastics to be recycled abroad. They are processed into little pellets like you see in the picture. Problems then occur when shipping containers are jettisoned into the sea. Once spent a couple of hours picking these little pellets up that had been washed up on to the beach from the North Sea. They’re so tiny and that’s why so much of marine life ingests them. Dear UK - process plastics here and not abroad.

The question is what microplastics are you talking about? .003 mm or 3 mm? You're not likely to directly injest 3 mm bits of plastic, and if you do, you'll poop them out. These are what are KNOWN to kill fish. OTOH, it's a little spooky that scientists have found that .003 mm plastics can get inside animals' and plants' tissues, and while we don't know of any specific danger, we certainly don't know they're safe

There ought to be a distinction between bits of plastic and the kind they find in organs and tissues. But, speaking of the tinier of the two, there are a lot of correlations between the existence of microplastics and the rise of many types of cancer and autoimmune diseases. You don't need to be a scientist to observe this.

Beyond the health and environmental concerns, it just tastes bad. Really. Where I live it is not commonly used, and today I threw out 2/3 of a drink that contained HFCS because it was undrinkably sweet (it was an import I didn't realise contained it until I tasted). You don't realise how bad it is until you have a chance to taste how good sweet things are without it.

Cane sugar and beet sugar are so much better tasting. I studied food science in college and we had one lab where we tasted different sugars and sugar analogues. We learned to taste the difference between sucrose and HFCS. For me HFCS comes across as a sort of sliminess on my tongue. After my sensory courses some foods were forever ruined for me. Soda with HFCS is one of them.

High fructose corn syrup is just as it says in its name high in FRUCTOSE. HFCS is primarily fructose unlike sugar which breaks down to a much lower amount of fructose and glucose. Fructose goes straight to the liver where it begins to produce a fatty like substance that inflames the liver and eventually leads to non alcoholic fatty liver which can eventually be fatal through fibrosis which eventually becomes liver cirrhosis. HFCS also punctures microscopic holes in the lining of the intestines which leads to a syndrome known as leaky gut where toxins permeate the intestinal lining and enter the blood stream leading to inflammation and a host of other issues. HFCS also stimulates hunger much more so than cane sugar and because of the highly inflammatory properties is also more prone to causing insulin resistance and ultimately type II diabetes and it also promotes fat storage and obesity at higher rates than sugar. It's also ultra processed which is just inherently bad. Avoid.

Working part time is better than working full time. At least you can maintain a work-life balance compared to working full time where you work 40 hours a week and you only get 48 hours of free time. And that free time is used to rest or prepare for the next week leaving little time to pursue hobbies or activities.

Mainly USA problems. No hate or bashing but I hope people living in the US realize these problems are not common in rich countries. I personally think it’s because of no public healthcare, private pension, no free university and so on. So much at risk. This puts you in an almost powerless situation compared to your employer. You can’t say no.

Meh, people have to do something to survive. Would you miraculously be happier if you only worked 35 hours a week or is 30 hours the magic number? Find something which satisfies you and gives you enough compensation for your preferred lifestyle.

Botox is a lifesaver for those with chronic migraine. I went from six to seven disabling migraines a week to none after receiving Botox for migraine. I'm sure it can be abused cosmetically, but it does have very good clinical uses.

The United States likes to point fingers at some Asian cultures for their brutal work culture, but ever since I moved here for work I hear people sometimes brag how they pull 70 hour work weeks (fortunately not in my field). I hear about woman get little time off if they are having a child. I hear about people who are too nervous to use vacation days because of the work they fear will pile up. The United States does can have an equally toxic and brutal work culture, especially in the tech and pharmaceutical fields. It’s scary here when people thing you’re week or spoiled for only working 40 hours and taking time off. I really miss the UK 😞

Honestly, I love my job - I don't work in a profit-oriented industry, I help homeless people and get paid for it - but my hours are rather inconvenient sometimes. Like, no time to do stuff in the morning and no time to do stuff in the evening, so I get takeout way more often than I used to. Luckily, I have a couple of friends who more or less force me to go outside every now and then.

This. Comparing one living situation to another can be quite healthy, but on Social Media people don't compare their lifes to other people's lives. They compare their lives to other people's curated snapshots of short moments in their lifes. They don't see what's in between. And they're bombarded with the best of the best in other people's lives in one constant stream. So it appears as if other people's lives is an uninterrupted party. Weddings, holidays, vacations great new jobs, brilliant achievements big romantic gestures seem to be other people's daily routine while those consuming this feel left out. They don't realise that the others have roughly the same amount of good moments individually than they themselves have. It always seems they have more and everything is perfect. No one posts their fails and boring grind after all.

People Are Sharing "Modern-Day Poisons" That Are Normalized Now But Will Probably Be Seen As Dangerous In The Future (30 Answers) I’m gonna say Vaping. I knocked it on the head as my New Year’s resolution. First time I’ve been completely nicotine free, and still going strong, but I genuinely felt like I was about to cough my lungs up about 90% of the time vaping. If I have to be honest, I don’t miss either, but I started vaping to stop smoking. I hate seeing young kids and teens do it- ones who wouldn’t have even considered smoking. EDIT: I’m talking disposable vapes, should’ve clarified that beforehand.

I go to high school, it’s honestly really sad. There’s a group of kids on my bus that always vape (really nice kids otherwise but it’s annoying), and you just watch them puff, cough and hack for a sec, and keep puffing… vapes are just as bad, if not worse, than cigarettes, there’s just not enough people talking about it. :(

The worst part about vaping is that rather than being used as a tool to get away from smoking cigarettes, most people see it as an opportunity to get into smoking with fewer health risks, although; most recent studies show it's just as damaging. Its given rise to a new generation of smokers for companies to exploit once again.

Same. Started vaping to quit smoking. Took me years of steeping down the nicotine level in my vape, then nicotine patches and gum, until I finally quit them all. Haven't had an actual cigarette in years and hate the taste and smell. But when I have a craving it's for a cigarette, not a vape, f'n weird. Lol

Tobacco companies are behind pushing vaping, since smoking has been stigmatized in much of the world. The same crooks who tried to bury and deny evidence smoking was harmful to health are now selling vapes under the guise of an aid to stop smoking.

Vaping saved me from actually smoking, it's been six years now without real cigarettes. But not having legal heroin in the form of cigarettes in every store in America might have helped me never start! Nicotine changes you into a lifetime nicoholic, it's really wicked.

Because the high end expensive rechargeable/refillable vapes and cartridges go through far more rigorous testing and quality assurance than the cheap disposable ones that are aimed squarely at kids. Neither are good for you, but the recharge/refill vapes are marginally better. They're still just basically portable shisha pipes.

I wonder how they got sucked in?

I'll admit I'm pretty addicted to coffee (I didn't even like it till later in college). But energy drinks have so much sugar that they make me queasy to just drink. On a semi-related note though, I've come across a "coffee substitute" that seems to be a pretty healthy option. It's roasted and ground cacao beans. Takes a little work to get it to brew right, but it tastes pretty good once you figure it out. I still have regular coffee, but I've started filling my to-go cup with the cacao brew instead, for work. It's supposedly a gentler pick-me-up, not that I've researched it, I mostly just wanted a less sugary option for my hot chocolate that I love so much 😅

I used to work with professional footballers (soccer to our American friends) they mostly drank water and then had a bottle of OJ mixed 40/60 with water and some salt, even on a hard training day they stuck to that.. No energy or electrolyte drinks. If it’s good enough for them….. PS Energy drinks are being slowly banned or on restrictive sale around the world, that may or may not be significant.

No, this is a centrist painting all sides with a broad brush, as usual. There are plenty of things a reasonable person should be very angry at in the world right now: rising inequality, the erosion of democracy, know-nothing anti-intellectualism, the loss of human rights like abortion and the ability for trans people to even exist in public. These are things we need to get angry about and do something about. The problem is and always has been the people who get pissed at things like not being able to say "Merry Christmas" and wearing face masks.

People Are Sharing "Modern-Day Poisons" That Are Normalized Now But Will Probably Be Seen As Dangerous In The Future (30 Answers) An excess of almost anything (overly) processed. Most people consume too much meat, too much sugar, too much salt, too much saturated fat, too much caffeine, too many nitrates/nitrites, etc etc. I try to eat relatively healthy but even I definitely consume too much sugar and too much caffeine. It's so hard to stop once you're used to it, modern processed foods are pretty addictive and it's scary. Edit: I'm aware that not all types of processing are inherently bad. This is not a scientific forum, it's an AskReddit thread and I'm sure most people know exactly which kind of processing I mean by that.

That is incorrect. Only the connection between cancer and NITRITES has been established. Not the connection to NITRATES. They are similar but not the same chemicals. Trust me, I'm a Food Scientist and I studied this in college.

Too much is by definition too much. You can have too much water. The fact that *so* much processed food exists, and can sometimes cheaper than healthier options, is advertised in such a way makes it far more of a problem than consumption. Too much broccoli can make you ill and I'm fairly confident the only processing that goes through is harvesting.

Not sure why people commenting CNN, MSNBC, ect are getting down voted. ALL mainstream news media are paid off by corporations to help or hide different stories, all push an agenda based on their political leanings, and care more about money than news. At this point it isn't conspiracy because it's completely out in the open. Down vote me too if you want, but I think it's worth examining all news outlets to better understand the ways they work to control and manipulate us.

Agree! People need to learn more about research and statistics so they can make educated interpretations for themselves. Stats are thrown around as fact but if you don’t understand what they mean you can easily be dupped. For example, the rate of murder increases when ice cream sales increase. That’s a fact. But murder and ice cream have no relation to one another. It’s a coincidental correlation, connected by an increase in temperature. But can you see how a proven fact being spouted without all the context can be dangerous? I mean, we don’t want people closing down our ice cream shops! 🍦🍦🍦

Hey Anita! I, too, am a sugar addict. One thing I'd suggest is also seeing your doctor for some basic blood work. Sometimes a craving can be linked to some deficiencies. For example, I went through a serious phase of sugar craving, felt tired all the time, etc. Turns out I had a pretty serious vitamin D deficiency, which explained my lethargy. My body was looking for quick sources of energy - sugar. Anyway, beyond that, it was a matter of practice and will power, I'm afraid. Try staying hydrated, eating small amounts of complex carbs with protein throughout the day to keep blood sugars from dipping or spiking, and keep your mind busy. I hope some of that helps.

I kicked sugar cold turkey style. There are side effects to the withdrawal and you should check these out before deciding whether to gradually reduce your intake or just stop completely. I knew that stopping completely was the right thing for me. Stopped sugar and wheat at the same time. It's been 34 days 8 hours and 51 minutes but I barely notice it now.

People Are Sharing "Modern-Day Poisons" That Are Normalized Now But Will Probably Be Seen As Dangerous In The Future (30 Answers) Soda. I used to drink it a lot. I had terrible health issues and sleep issues. I cut it all out. Been maybe 2 years without it. I feel better, I'm sick less, I sleep better, and I function better overall. Just replace it with water. If you live in the western world you most likely have clean drinking water being pumped to your house. I don't believe on banning something because I don't like it, but I do think that s**t is poison. It's also super addictive. The first couple weeks I cut soda out was rough. Then we give this to kids and it screws up their systems. Edit: I've never had a comment get this kind of attention. Quickly going through the replies I want to say congratulations to everyone who kicked the habit or other ones like smoking. Second there are absolutely people not affected by it. If you drink it in moderation it's not too bad. I admit I was really bad with it. My main concern with it is that there's nothing good about coke or Pepsi. It's just sugar, caffeine, and addictive ingredients. That's why I use the term poison. It only has negative effects with it. Now that being said if you enjoy soda than go for it. It's your life. If you can do it in moderation even better. The thing is we market it so hard to kids and many parents just let them overindulge. Again not all but a good chunk. My parents let me have way too much. Also all my stuff is anecdotal. I'm not a doctor but every doctor I had when I was younger would tell me I need to stop drinking it. I would tell them I would and then not because I was young. It caught up to me though. If you're young now and pounding back several cans a day then it's probably going to hurt you too. I'm not a spring chicken anymore and every one of my friends who was like me was in the same boat with the health issues. If you can keep it in moderation then great, but watch how much you drink.

My dietologist's (she is an actual doctor, not nutritionist) rule for my program was that all sodas of any sort are strictly forbidden. Even the sugarfree ones. I could only have 1 glass on the free days, usually weekends reserved for going out or having a dinner somewhere without the stress of the diet. The way she explained it - to the extend of a diet - is that usually people have soda with their meal, and the fizz in it disrupts the digestion, to the extend that the things we eat don't get properly metabolized, and it often leads to stomach issues, bloating etc. It also leads down to a slippery slope with people drinking sodas instead of water, which can't be the best for the kidneys. But she realizes that completely cutting out anything from people would only make it more appealing, hence why she had the free day in her program. On that day, one could go out to a restaurant without worrying about what to eat/drink in alignment to the program. Moderation is the key :)

Then one day I had such a bad headrush that I actually ended up losing my balance, and fell on the floor seeing nothing but black and my legs kept twitching. Looking back I probably should have gone to the hospital, but we didn't exactly have money for hospital visits (yeah yeah, american healthcare sucks, not looking for debate on it) and it never happened that badly again. Came to realize that it was because the sodas were not a good replacement for water and I was (probably boarding on dangerously) dehydrated. I'd be lying if I said I cut out sodas after that (I fully believe they are an addiction), but I did start replacing some of them with water. Nowadays it's more of an occasional treat than an everyday drink though, and almost never pick ones with caffeine. Don't like the taste of mountain dew too much anymore though

I used to be addicted to mtn dew, I still miss the stuff, I enjoyed the taste, but now after being off it for so long I can't handle the acid anymore. Mtn dew, red tomatoes, and any citrus fruit gives me extreme pain in my stomach. Almost as though I've got a knife twisting in my gut. Not a good feeling. The stuff is not worth it. My health has improved, and I've lost weight, so there's that.

Personally and IMHO always, since I have such a terrible problem with heavily sugared and caffeinated sodas, especially Sunkist, there should be some regulations on ingredients and I don't mean "real sugar". I don't believe caffeine should ever be in a soda! That's straight up addiction and trying to hook people on it. Coffee and tea have it naturally. But sodas should be free of all drugs. Sugar isn't a drug, but it could be limited. But then we have all the screamers going " my rights my rights" I live in a place where people put full sugar mountain dew in sippy cups and bottles and then get mad when kiddos can't sleep. Wow.

"The Optimist believes that "This is the Best of Times" is true. The Pessimist fears this is true." :) But yes, Negativity can be just as toxic as toxic positivity. There is being a realist, and then there is being a downer just because.

I'll admit I am too negative overall (though I do have my light-hearted/goofy times), but I could never be super-positive all the time. That being said, I do make repeated attempts to be nicer/more positive, and usually feel better while it lasts. I tell myself that at least I keep trying...

I honestly believe that due to toxic reality TV, drama online and messy tabloids, people are subconsciously addicted to negativity. I realized early on in dating that some women (and men too) feel like a relationship is not fulfilling unless there's some level of negativity or drama going on. I had to break it off with one of my ex's because she would legitimately pick fights with me in order for me to react in an outrageous way like people do on reality TV shows. I would want to talk out whatever was pissing her off that day. She actually told me "why don't you slam a door or punch a wall? You always wanna have boring talks about it. Push me or something." Broke it off with her a few days later.

I recently introduced my daughter(5) to “YouTube Kids”. There are some really good aspects to this, she has learned so much already. BUT I have noticed a real decrease in her attention span when watching any other format. The ability to just skip/scan for other content the moment there is a lull in a video is a small but significant side effect. Films have become really difficult to watch all of a sudden… I can’t imagine what short format would do to her! 😬 (I am aware I sound like an old bastard saying “back in my day!” But honestly it’s a real problem)

People Are Sharing "Modern-Day Poisons" That Are Normalized Now But Will Probably Be Seen As Dangerous In The Future (30 Answers) In the US, Red 40. Banned in several countries and restricted in many others. When kids get a "sugar rush," a lot of the time it is just the effect of red dye 40. It has been linked to aggression and mental disorders like attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) in children. A review of 34 studies estimated that 8% of children with ADHD living in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada may have behavioral symptoms related to synthetic food colors. Studies in children with ADHD have demonstrated that restricting synthetic food dyes from the diet led to significant improvements in symptoms.

Natural red is actually pretty easy. When I was in college, my University was working on beet skin extract as a "natural" food coloring. It would still be classified as an artificial coloring as far as the FDA is concerned though. The idea was that the beet sugar industry isn't using the skin, but the beet skin pigments were very potent. Extract the pigments and Bob's your uncle. Garbage to food coloring.

Only one of them. There are many others and there are artificial alternatives that are not red 40 and don't cause problems. And cochenille red is nowadays mostly recreated in the lab since it's easier and cheaper anyway. It has the same chemical structure that is harmless but no lice were harmed in creating it.

Be more kind. Both inwards and outwards, when you are kind or forgiving to yourself you find more space inside your thoughts to see your positives and your abilities, you accept your own frailties and see the strengths you have to move beyond them. Yes, critical thinking is important but if it’s not used to find a solution or to build better thought processes then it is simply self-abuse and no one benefits from abuse. Be more kind eh?

If I told him I wanted to read my new book, what he heard was "I don't want to spend time with you". Most immature, insecure man I've ever known. The last time I turned him down he screamed at me that I didn't love him anymore. And a light bulb went off. I looked him right in the eyes and said "You know what, Mike? You're absolutely right. I DON'T love you anymore. I want a divorce". And felt this HUGE weight drop from my shoulders.

Sitting in place for too long can actually be detrimental to your health, as can laying in bed all day. Without moving for long periods of time, you increase your chances of blood clots, that's why they tend to administer anticoagulant meds when you are admitted to the hospital for a few days. However, standing up in the same position with limited movement for long periods can have the same effect.

Whether it's a smart phone or social media, there's good and bad. It depends on how they're used.

When I was a kid in the 50s we kids would be gone all day walking miles from home and going home when it got dark. This was in the D.C. area. But I got my daughters pagers and then phones because times have changed. Our parents couldn't tell us to come home (Heh, heh!). But we could call them from a pay phone if we needed to. As I get older I can call for assistance if I need to. The apps are definitely the problem.

It's not the technology that's bad, it's how most people use it.

I'm self employed, as well as being employed by the government. There's no way I could do my job without a smart phone.

Remeber the monolith in 2001 a space odyssey. looks eerily like a mobile phone.

Smartphones are not bad, I just wish they had actual buttons. Touch screen is a pain.
