One curious Reddit user recently posed the question, “What’s a modern day poison people willingly ingest?” And readers had plenty to say. From nicotine to social media, we’ve gathered some of the most spot-on responses below, so be sure to upvote the toxic things you’d like to have less of in your life. And regardless of what others try to tell you, remember that there’s never any obligation to partake in these poisons. Take care of yourselves, pandas!

Social Media
As with everything, it all depends on how you use it. The real problem with social media is people.
i agree social media is not bad the way people use it is. you should watch the social dellema on netflix it has a lot to say
Load More Replies...Back in 2016, the US elections gave enough fodder in my news feed to repeatedly trigger me most of any day. It was tough, and so I deleted all my platforms. The hardest was FB. They required me to use my laptop, NOT my phone to complete the process. After all the crazy hoop jumps, it then informed me that it would remain unactive for 2 weeks and I could feel free to login anytime during that period to reverse the deletion. I never logged back on. What's scary is scientifically, it can take two weeks to make or break a habit and the pull of addiction would be too strong to deny and just reactivate it. That's $#itty.
Social media can be both an amazing way to keep in touch with friends and family around the world, however, it can also be a toxic tool for comparison. There have been multiple psychological studies that speak about how social media can make people who suffer from ADHD, anxiety, and depression feel like they are in a constant state of comparison. It can be extremely addictive and only shows us a very curated version of someone’s life.
read "The Shallows" by Nicholas Carr. this stuff is actually rewiring our brains, by design. scary stuff!
Very interesting, I think I will check that out. There's no doubt social media is programming people. It can be good to catch up, but not great also.
Load More Replies...Yes, this. We aren't designed to have so much information accessible all the time or to have so many people linked to our lives. It's driving us insane.
My teacher is making my class write a argumentative research paper about whether social media is a risk or benefit
My argument would be that it's inevitable. In any ecosystem, if there is a niche, then something will come along to fill it. It will be interesting to see how this Tik-Tok ban plays out.

Christian Nationalism
The way the Christo-fascists see it, it’s a one-way ban: the government can’t interfere in religion but religion can be the government.
Load More Replies...ANY religious, political or emotional nationalism is dangerous! It's brainwashing. It's how a cult is organised. Extremely dangerous for any society.
This is frighteningly on the rise in the United States and even parts of the United Kingdom. It is truly terrifying.
We (here in the U.K.) can a least take some solace in the fact that at the last census the ‘believers’ were in a minority. We are moving away from doctrine written by powerful, rich men and starting moves to separate the church elders from the Lords. It’s going to take a while but from tiny acorns giant oaks grow!
Load More Replies...Doesn't exist where I am from... doesn't really need a label either .... any religion has extremists with in it, bot just Christianity
Which is why religion itself is the actual problem.

I was honestly stunned the other day when I learned the original pledge of allegiance did not include the words “under god” 🤯
Again, in the 50's, the fear of commies got President Ike and others to add "God" officially to the Pledge of Allegiance. They thought commies didn't necessary believe in God and this would perhaps separate the good guys from the bad.

Idolizing celebrities
I'm sure the Romans had toxic fandoms too. "OMG that new Gladiator Maximus is a TFU!"
Load More Replies...I've honestly never understood this. They are ordinary people doing a job that puts them in the public eye. Doesn't make them better or worse. They are a mix, some good, some bad and all the varieties in between. Loved them in a film? Or in an interview? You still don't know them. They could also be amazingly good people but they might not be your cup of tea to spend an evening with.
It's pack hierarchy dynamics, hard coded into most people's genetics. Those seen as higher up the tree of success drive emulation and an attraction... We want to be in their group. This led to survival over millions of years but doesn't work so well now.
Load More Replies...That’s not really a modern day issue.. Once upon a time, people worshipped and idolized gods. They built temples and statues for the gods, and worshipped them. They were their idols. Jesus was a celeb of some sort too, you know? Athletes in Ancient Greece were welcomed home as heroes, had songs and poems written in their honour, and received free food and gifts from those seeking celebrity endorsement. Ancient Rome similarly applauded actors and notorious gladiators, and Julius Caesar appeared on a coin in his own lifetime . Then you have people like Charlie Chaplin, Marlena Dietrich, Einstein etc.Hitler was a celebrity when you think of it. Women were literally fainting before Elvis.Lennon. Jackson I think worshipping someone/something is in our nature, unfortunately
"hero-worship is strongest where there is least regard for human freedom" - herbert spencer
There are only two times I care what celebrities are up to. One is if it's something that will benefit ordinary people. The other is if they're doing something in my house and so far that hasn't happened, for which I am thankful.
I’m afraid this will never die. Been around since beginning of written history and probably longer. The kind of celebrity may change but the idolizing will never go away.
Agree. They think they should be treated like Royalty wherever they go.
Misinformation/disinformation/propoganda/agitprop...
Misinformation has always been so rife that probably about 90% of what you think you know about the middle ages is entirely backwards, for instance. (People lived way longer in 1300 than in 1920, for instance; and women ruled empires under their own authority.)
This guy should be embarrassed that his picture is being used this way, but he’s probably stupid enough to actually be proud of it. Some people really are too stupid to insult.
Not a modern problem. See: All of human history. We're kinda stupid. Sometimes we're kept that way... but seometimes even the educated elites of various eras and nations were dumb AF. E.g., European male doctors refusing to wash hands b/c misogyny blinded them to the fact female midwives lost fewer patients b/c they *washed up*.
You're right, but I'd like to point out that misogyny wasn't the initial reason they didn't wash their hands; it later contributed to why they refused to change despite all the evidence, but it wasn't the original cause. Initially, it was because of two factors: first and foremost, germ theory had not developed yet, so they couldn't understand that infection could be carried from one patient to another via the doctor post-op, and secondly there were times where having bloodied hands were kind of a status symbol among doctors, I guess as an indicator of the kind of work they were doing. But of course, the less deaths the midwives had should've indicated that hygiene helped, but this was ignored because the midwives had little to no formal training, whereas all the doctors were 'qualified'
Load More Replies...I really doubt that this will be any less powerful or prevalent in the future.

Harmful it may be, but I'm glad I live in a country where the government doesn't do things like banning media that doesn't agree with it.
Load More Replies...I feel bad for so many teenagers nowadays. Perhaps it is just me, but I feel like there is an insurmountable amount of pressure placed on teens to share every facet of their life online or garner social media fame just to fit in.
Social media is less important to them than is portrayed, it is a serious blight but they’ve already seen the mess it made of the generations above them and they are not interested in following their lead, there are more opting to be internet ‘dark’ and keeping their information away from apps and systems. There is hope out there!

the amount of data it collects is a bit too much. they literally have access to your camera microphone and clipboared all the time. i am never making an account. also you should read the terms and conditions to it the amount of things you are allowing it to do is massive.

Microplastics
I don’t think people are « willingly ingesting » those, they’re just hard to avoid nowadays
People are not willing to ingest them but they are not willing to stop buying Dingle use plastic stuff, either.
Load More Replies...We've a ready started to realize it and are banned from products that get rinsed down the drain at least.
The UK ships the majority of its plastics to be recycled abroad. They are processed into little pellets like you see in the picture. Problems then occur when shipping containers are jettisoned into the sea. Once spent a couple of hours picking these little pellets up that had been washed up on to the beach from the North Sea. They’re so tiny and that’s why so much of marine life ingests them. Dear UK - process plastics here and not abroad.
The question is what microplastics are you talking about? .003 mm or 3 mm? You're not likely to directly injest 3 mm bits of plastic, and if you do, you'll poop them out. These are what are KNOWN to kill fish. OTOH, it's a little spooky that scientists have found that .003 mm plastics can get inside animals' and plants' tissues, and while we don't know of any specific danger, we certainly don't know they're safe
There ought to be a distinction between bits of plastic and the kind they find in organs and tissues. But, speaking of the tinier of the two, there are a lot of correlations between the existence of microplastics and the rise of many types of cancer and autoimmune diseases. You don't need to be a scientist to observe this.

that high fructose corn syrup
Beyond the health and environmental concerns, it just tastes bad. Really. Where I live it is not commonly used, and today I threw out 2/3 of a drink that contained HFCS because it was undrinkably sweet (it was an import I didn't realise contained it until I tasted). You don't realise how bad it is until you have a chance to taste how good sweet things are without it.
Cane sugar and beet sugar are so much better tasting. I studied food science in college and we had one lab where we tasted different sugars and sugar analogues. We learned to taste the difference between sucrose and HFCS. For me HFCS comes across as a sort of sliminess on my tongue. After my sensory courses some foods were forever ruined for me. Soda with HFCS is one of them.
Load More Replies...Coke with real sugar is SO much better, especially served at room temperature as originally intended. And you can get other kinds of pop with real sugar around Passover because HFCS isn't kosher for Passover and they make pop with real sugar just for Passover!!! :D
OMG I tell people all the time that drinks taste better served at room temperature and they all think I'm weird.
Load More Replies...As long as corporations make $$$$ and governments depend on said corporations for their political contributions, we wll be subjected to this and so much more.
HFCS is why one can use food stamps to buy candy and soda in the U.S. Gotta love farmers' lobbying.
Why? I am seriously curious. Is is really any worse than plain granulated sugar? Why does HFCS get more negative responses compared to sugar?
High fructose corn syrup is just as it says in its name high in FRUCTOSE. HFCS is primarily fructose unlike sugar which breaks down to a much lower amount of fructose and glucose. Fructose goes straight to the liver where it begins to produce a fatty like substance that inflames the liver and eventually leads to non alcoholic fatty liver which can eventually be fatal through fibrosis which eventually becomes liver cirrhosis. HFCS also punctures microscopic holes in the lining of the intestines which leads to a syndrome known as leaky gut where toxins permeate the intestinal lining and enter the blood stream leading to inflammation and a host of other issues. HFCS also stimulates hunger much more so than cane sugar and because of the highly inflammatory properties is also more prone to causing insulin resistance and ultimately type II diabetes and it also promotes fat storage and obesity at higher rates than sugar. It's also ultra processed which is just inherently bad. Avoid.

Existential dread from running on a capitalistic hamster wheel 40+ hours a week
Correct. Hamsters have it easy. Wake up. Have a snack. Spend a few minutes on the wheel. Drink some water. Take a nap. Sounds awesome to me.
Load More Replies...Working part time is better than working full time. At least you can maintain a work-life balance compared to working full time where you work 40 hours a week and you only get 48 hours of free time. And that free time is used to rest or prepare for the next week leaving little time to pursue hobbies or activities.
Mainly USA problems. No hate or bashing but I hope people living in the US realize these problems are not common in rich countries. I personally think it’s because of no public healthcare, private pension, no free university and so on. So much at risk. This puts you in an almost powerless situation compared to your employer. You can’t say no.
Disconnect health care from employment and watch the landscape change as newly free and empowered workers... Oh so that's why there's no Medicare for all...
Meh, people have to do something to survive. Would you miraculously be happier if you only worked 35 hours a week or is 30 hours the magic number? Find something which satisfies you and gives you enough compensation for your preferred lifestyle.
Does this poster work in HR? because it sounds like management bollox.
40 + hrs is what’s normally done by the people you clapped during covid in 3 days and they still have 3 1/2 days of work still to go to afford to live
Botox..Botulinum toxin, one of the most poisonous biological substances known
The picture is of Jocelyn Wildenstein and cosmetic surgery and denial caused her problems not Botox, although I agree Botox is extremely poisonous.
While primarily known for plastic surgery-like use (reducing the appearance of wrinkles), there are significant other health-related applications.
Botox is a lifesaver for those with chronic migraine. I went from six to seven disabling migraines a week to none after receiving Botox for migraine. I'm sure it can be abused cosmetically, but it does have very good clinical uses.
Cosmetic uses, its dumb. But it has been recently been proven to help with migraines so it has its place.
That lady has waaaaay more than Botox LOL. I do think there should be more laws/Help for people so addicted to plastic surgery they don't look human anymore.
Wait- Botox is BOTULISM?? That’s one of the most deadly toxins that exist!

I hear about woman get little time off if they are having a child. I hear about people who are too nervous to use vacation days because of the work they fear will pile up. The United States does can have an equally toxic and brutal work culture, especially in the tech and pharmaceutical fields. It’s scary here when people thing you’re week or spoiled for only working 40 hours and taking time off. I really miss the UK 😞
I think this is mainly an American problem, as here in the UK we work around 40 hours a week with optional overtime which is paid. In fact, we are legally allowed to work up to 48 hours a week
Honestly, I love my job - I don't work in a profit-oriented industry, I help homeless people and get paid for it - but my hours are rather inconvenient sometimes. Like, no time to do stuff in the morning and no time to do stuff in the evening, so I get takeout way more often than I used to. Luckily, I have a couple of friends who more or less force me to go outside every now and then.
My father always told me, 'Work to live, don't live to work.' I remind myself of that everyday and close my laptop.
Just woke up after a week of work and can barely open and close my hands without pain. That means I just rest on time off, no energy to play with my kids or anything else. Have to go as long as my body lets me. And then what?? (36 year old Arborist)
There are people who actually enjoy going to work, my daughter loves her job, and my husband, who runs his own business, loves working too, I love to keep super busy too.
Having to work to "earn a living" implies that living is not something you have a right to.
I'm Binge watching Married with Children and a low paid shoe salesman can afford to pay a mortgage for a decent sized house plus a wife and kids who spend all his money and then in 1 episode a homeless guy buys something of Marcey's and she and Peggy get it back. Peggy offered to find him a job and he said he already had one as a teacher. Seems like in those days a teacher still didn't earn enough even then

Edit: Facebook, Instagram, etc. Any social media where you're comparing your life against other people's lives
People who film concerts and don't just watch it are the same people who compere their lives to others

This. Comparing one living situation to another can be quite healthy, but on Social Media people don't compare their lifes to other people's lives. They compare their lives to other people's curated snapshots of short moments in their lifes. They don't see what's in between. And they're bombarded with the best of the best in other people's lives in one constant stream. So it appears as if other people's lives is an uninterrupted party. Weddings, holidays, vacations great new jobs, brilliant achievements big romantic gestures seem to be other people's daily routine while those consuming this feel left out. They don't realise that the others have roughly the same amount of good moments individually than they themselves have. It always seems they have more and everything is perfect. No one posts their fails and boring grind after all.

I’m gonna say Vaping. I knocked it on the head as my New Year’s resolution. First time I’ve been completely nicotine free, and still going strong, but I genuinely felt like I was about to cough my lungs up about 90% of the time vaping. If I have to be honest, I don’t miss either, but I started vaping to stop smoking. I hate seeing young kids and teens do it- ones who wouldn’t have even considered smoking.
EDIT: I’m talking disposable vapes, should’ve clarified that beforehand.
I go to high school, it’s honestly really sad. There’s a group of kids on my bus that always vape (really nice kids otherwise but it’s annoying), and you just watch them puff, cough and hack for a sec, and keep puffing… vapes are just as bad, if not worse, than cigarettes, there’s just not enough people talking about it. :(
Load More Replies...The worst part about vaping is that rather than being used as a tool to get away from smoking cigarettes, most people see it as an opportunity to get into smoking with fewer health risks, although; most recent studies show it's just as damaging. Its given rise to a new generation of smokers for companies to exploit once again.
Same. Started vaping to quit smoking. Took me years of steeping down the nicotine level in my vape, then nicotine patches and gum, until I finally quit them all. Haven't had an actual cigarette in years and hate the taste and smell. But when I have a craving it's for a cigarette, not a vape, f'n weird. Lol
There's addictive stuff in cigarettes other than nicotine.
Load More Replies...So I just switched to vaping from tobacco. Might sound stupid, but I plan to step down nicotine until I can get past the "throat hit" sense. 40 year habits die hard. Weird that it was like flipping a switch, tobacco to vaping. Do not miss tobacco. Doc is not thrilled, but pleased I no longer smoke, and supportive of nicotine step down.
No that's weird because when I quit smoking and switch to vaping my lungs cleared up and healed quite a bit according to my doctor
Vaping saved me from actually smoking, it's been six years now without real cigarettes. But not having legal heroin in the form of cigarettes in every store in America might have helped me never start! Nicotine changes you into a lifetime nicoholic, it's really wicked.
Why is it edited to add ‘disposable vapes’ are the refillable ones considered better for you?
Because the high end expensive rechargeable/refillable vapes and cartridges go through far more rigorous testing and quality assurance than the cheap disposable ones that are aimed squarely at kids. Neither are good for you, but the recharge/refill vapes are marginally better. They're still just basically portable shisha pipes.
Load More Replies...60s smoking good 80s smoking bad 00s vaping safer than smoking 20s hey the kids are all hooked on vaping because it was advertised as ‘safer smoking’, even health advisors promoted it to help smokers move away from tobacco and the youth had no intention of smoking but if there’s a safe way to do it then they’ll hit that vape. I wonder how they got sucked in?
Energy drinks
I have heard of athletes who fill the bottles with water to keep the sponsors happy... Tells you everything you need to know about drinking them for sports.
Yeah, people in th Redbull F1 team seem to be drinking those all the time, while in reality they are just water bottles made to imitate Redbull cans
Load More Replies...When I was in the navy and posted to an operation centre we had to work 12 hour shifts like two days, two nights and four off. 6 month deployment. Port and starboard watch (12 on and 12 off) no days off, during wartime where at one point we were at battlestations for 3 days straight. Redbull was just becoming a thing, no other energy drinks. Would drink those plus pop a couple nodoze and drink coffee. These things have zero effect on me. As far as I'm concerned, it's just an expensive can of pop.
I'll admit I'm pretty addicted to coffee (I didn't even like it till later in college). But energy drinks have so much sugar that they make me queasy to just drink. On a semi-related note though, I've come across a "coffee substitute" that seems to be a pretty healthy option. It's roasted and ground cacao beans. Takes a little work to get it to brew right, but it tastes pretty good once you figure it out. I still have regular coffee, but I've started filling my to-go cup with the cacao brew instead, for work. It's supposedly a gentler pick-me-up, not that I've researched it, I mostly just wanted a less sugary option for my hot chocolate that I love so much 😅
I used to work with professional footballers (soccer to our American friends) they mostly drank water and then had a bottle of OJ mixed 40/60 with water and some salt, even on a hard training day they stuck to that.. No energy or electrolyte drinks. If it’s good enough for them….. PS Energy drinks are being slowly banned or on restrictive sale around the world, that may or may not be significant.
Outrage. It’s straight up poison to your mental health, but we thrive on it, yearn for it. Places like Tik-tok, twitter, and r/PublicFreakout pass it out like dealers for little more than some attention—poisoning people to feel popular. Worse, it’s useful to those in control, so there’s no escaping it. Political parties and activists need you outraged, one-tracked, immune to real empathy, and motivated to solidify their power, so here we are.

Yes. It takes emotional energy to fear and hate. It's tiresome. It's wearying. It's destructive to your health.
Load More Replies...No, this is a centrist painting all sides with a broad brush, as usual. There are plenty of things a reasonable person should be very angry at in the world right now: rising inequality, the erosion of democracy, know-nothing anti-intellectualism, the loss of human rights like abortion and the ability for trans people to even exist in public. These are things we need to get angry about and do something about. The problem is and always has been the people who get pissed at things like not being able to say "Merry Christmas" and wearing face masks.
Yeah I’m addicted to the outrage in news, I’m breaking the habit but it’s really toxic and sucks.

An excess of almost anything (overly) processed. Most people consume too much meat, too much sugar, too much salt, too much saturated fat, too much caffeine, too many nitrates/nitrites, etc etc. I try to eat relatively healthy but even I definitely consume too much sugar and too much caffeine. It's so hard to stop once you're used to it, modern processed foods are pretty addictive and it's scary.
Edit: I'm aware that not all types of processing are inherently bad. This is not a scientific forum, it's an AskReddit thread and I'm sure most people know exactly which kind of processing I mean by that.
Don’t forget the (proven) cancer causing nitrates in so many processed meats. Bacon, ham, hot dogs, etc.
That is incorrect. Only the connection between cancer and NITRITES has been established. Not the connection to NITRATES. They are similar but not the same chemicals. Trust me, I'm a Food Scientist and I studied this in college.
Load More Replies...Too much is by definition too much. You can have too much water. The fact that *so* much processed food exists, and can sometimes cheaper than healthier options, is advertised in such a way makes it far more of a problem than consumption. Too much broccoli can make you ill and I'm fairly confident the only processing that goes through is harvesting.
It sickens me that in the US, SO many foods and food additives are NOT banned when they are in other countries. Like how is there an "allowable" amount of arsenic in infant rice cereal. THAT is effed up.
If it came with something you can't pronounce, or don't know the chemistry of, don't eat it. Or, in my family, "If Great-Grandma wouldn't recognize it...."
Exactly!!! I always say to myself, "If the ingredients on the label looks like something you would mix together in Chemistry class, put it back on the shelf and walk away!" Not real food!!! :-0 ;-)

I loath Instagram reels. I used to love Instagram for sharing photographs and finding neat photographers and artists. Now it’s just a mini TikTok.

Fox, Newsmax, OANN.
Not sure why people commenting CNN, MSNBC, ect are getting down voted. ALL mainstream news media are paid off by corporations to help or hide different stories, all push an agenda based on their political leanings, and care more about money than news. At this point it isn't conspiracy because it's completely out in the open. Down vote me too if you want, but I think it's worth examining all news outlets to better understand the ways they work to control and manipulate us.
I think it’s trying to imply that cnn msnbc or any analog you want to call left wing is doing anything as extreme as fox and news nation. Your comparing partisan spin to outright party propaganda. It’s not the same. I hate cable news in general but let’s stop pretending this is a 2 side problem.
Load More Replies...There's solid evidence that Fox, Newsmax, and OANN have intentionally lied to their viewers. While the others can be mistaken on an issue, it's more a matter of overzealousness than intentional deception.
I would rather hear all viewpoints and make informed decisions. The mantras of the alphabet news organizations are mind numbing . Freedom of speech means I decide for myself what is true, and good, and right. Without it how easily humans are herded onto the train to the gas chamber.
Agree! People need to learn more about research and statistics so they can make educated interpretations for themselves. Stats are thrown around as fact but if you don’t understand what they mean you can easily be dupped. For example, the rate of murder increases when ice cream sales increase. That’s a fact. But murder and ice cream have no relation to one another. It’s a coincidental correlation, connected by an increase in temperature. But can you see how a proven fact being spouted without all the context can be dangerous? I mean, we don’t want people closing down our ice cream shops! 🍦🍦🍦

You can beat it, I believe in you!! (I started smoking at 15, now I'm 30 and haven't touched a cigarette in 3 years so far!)
IKR, even the comments are duplicated. A glitch in the matrix I assume? you and I are the only real ones here the rest are fake??(/s just to be safe)
Load More Replies...Yes. My dad just kicked the bucket due to pneumonia and alcoholic liver failure, but the pneumonia was so extra bad because cigarettes gave him severe COPD.
Truly sorry about your loss. It's one I understand. Mom was 6th of 7 in her family. In 1940s-50s women had few options for employment. Her elder sisters were lost to nicotine-related cancer without ever smoking... they were waitresses and cooks, and smoking was allowed in restaurants.
Load More Replies...But isn't there a way to get the nicotine kick without smoking? Like the gum? Or patch?
Hard part: smoking causes *habit. Driving? Light up. After dinner? Light up. Stress? Light up. You absolutely must address the behavior before you can effectively drop the drug. EDIT: 10-14 days to break a habit. It is doable.
Load More Replies...Chantrix! I think I’m spelling it wrong. Amazing! I was a pack a day smoker for 20 years. When you start the medication they say to keep smoking. After a few weeks smoking makes you want to puke. Even if you try you’ll put it down. I also switched to a brand I didn’t like.
I tried that and had horrible night terrors. I would wake up bleeding from scratching and had to wear oven mitts to bed; until I gave up and kept smoking:( 21yrs now
Load More Replies...I was severely addicted to Diet Pepsi. Toxic chemicals bad for your body, bad for your teeth. Been off it almost 30 days now. Yay.
My dad quit smoking, it's been almost 8 years I think. He says he still has dreams of smoking.
I quit 9 years ago. First couple of years I dreamt it every.single.night.😳nowadays not so much anymore.

Processed sugars
Can anyone give any advice on curbing/beating sugar addiction? I don’t drink sweet drinks but I’m seriously addicted to sweets and chocolate. TIA
Maybe try weaning yourself off slowly, try treats with natural sugars like honey, act.
Load More Replies...Thank you everyone so much for your advice! I really appreciate it. I get cravings in the morning and evening, morning I can usually ignore but when the evening time comes I just can’t get enough. If I’m running low on sweets (and I have my particular favourites) I get really anxious and I bulk buy, too. I stopped drinking alcohol 3 years ago and only now drink water and herbal teas, never been into crisps/biscuits ect but slowly over the past year and a half, I just can’t stop eating/craving sweets. Thank you everyone, you’re all so kind and willing to help xx
Hey Anita! I, too, am a sugar addict. One thing I'd suggest is also seeing your doctor for some basic blood work. Sometimes a craving can be linked to some deficiencies. For example, I went through a serious phase of sugar craving, felt tired all the time, etc. Turns out I had a pretty serious vitamin D deficiency, which explained my lethargy. My body was looking for quick sources of energy - sugar. Anyway, beyond that, it was a matter of practice and will power, I'm afraid. Try staying hydrated, eating small amounts of complex carbs with protein throughout the day to keep blood sugars from dipping or spiking, and keep your mind busy. I hope some of that helps.
Load More Replies...I kicked sugar cold turkey style. There are side effects to the withdrawal and you should check these out before deciding whether to gradually reduce your intake or just stop completely. I knew that stopping completely was the right thing for me. Stopped sugar and wheat at the same time. It's been 34 days 8 hours and 51 minutes but I barely notice it now.
Oh come on!! Now you’re going too far. You took away my twitter, the you tube and the tick tock! Leave the candy, especially chocolate, alone. 😼
Soda. I used to drink it a lot. I had terrible health issues and sleep issues. I cut it all out. Been maybe 2 years without it. I feel better, I'm sick less, I sleep better, and I function better overall. Just replace it with water. If you live in the western world you most likely have clean drinking water being pumped to your house.
I don't believe on banning something because I don't like it, but I do think that s**t is poison. It's also super addictive. The first couple weeks I cut soda out was rough. Then we give this to kids and it screws up their systems.
Edit: I've never had a comment get this kind of attention. Quickly going through the replies I want to say congratulations to everyone who kicked the habit or other ones like smoking. Second there are absolutely people not affected by it. If you drink it in moderation it's not too bad. I admit I was really bad with it.
My main concern with it is that there's nothing good about coke or Pepsi. It's just sugar, caffeine, and addictive ingredients. That's why I use the term poison. It only has negative effects with it. Now that being said if you enjoy soda than go for it. It's your life. If you can do it in moderation even better. The thing is we market it so hard to kids and many parents just let them overindulge. Again not all but a good chunk. My parents let me have way too much.
Also all my stuff is anecdotal. I'm not a doctor but every doctor I had when I was younger would tell me I need to stop drinking it. I would tell them I would and then not because I was young. It caught up to me though. If you're young now and pounding back several cans a day then it's probably going to hurt you too. I'm not a spring chicken anymore and every one of my friends who was like me was in the same boat with the health issues. If you can keep it in moderation then great, but watch how much you drink.
That one is true. The combination of liquid sugar (often high fructose), caffeine and phosphorus acid is detrimental to your health. Empty calories that cause blood sugar spikes, insulin desensitization, fatty liver, obesity, tooth decay, attention deficits and a host of other problems. Source: I'm an actual MD
My dietologist's (she is an actual doctor, not nutritionist) rule for my program was that all sodas of any sort are strictly forbidden. Even the sugarfree ones. I could only have 1 glass on the free days, usually weekends reserved for going out or having a dinner somewhere without the stress of the diet. The way she explained it - to the extend of a diet - is that usually people have soda with their meal, and the fizz in it disrupts the digestion, to the extend that the things we eat don't get properly metabolized, and it often leads to stomach issues, bloating etc. It also leads down to a slippery slope with people drinking sodas instead of water, which can't be the best for the kidneys. But she realizes that completely cutting out anything from people would only make it more appealing, hence why she had the free day in her program. On that day, one could go out to a restaurant without worrying about what to eat/drink in alignment to the program. Moderation is the key :)
Load More Replies...When I was younger I drank almost nothing but mountain dew. I didn't realize at the time why I kept getting so many headaches and head rushes everytime I stood up. Then one day I had such a bad headrush that I actually ended up losing my balance, and fell on the floor seeing nothing but black and my legs kept twitching. Looking back I probably should have gone to the hospital, but we didn't exactly have money for hospital visits (yeah yeah, american healthcare sucks, not looking for debate on it) and it never happened that badly again. Came to realize that it was because the sodas were not a good replacement for water and I was (probably boarding on dangerously) dehydrated. I'd be lying if I said I cut out sodas after that (I fully believe they are an addiction), but I did start replacing some of them with water. Nowadays it's more of an occasional treat than an everyday drink though, and almost never pick ones with caffeine. Don't like the taste of mountain dew too much anymore though
I used to be addicted to mtn dew, I still miss the stuff, I enjoyed the taste, but now after being off it for so long I can't handle the acid anymore. Mtn dew, red tomatoes, and any citrus fruit gives me extreme pain in my stomach. Almost as though I've got a knife twisting in my gut. Not a good feeling. The stuff is not worth it. My health has improved, and I've lost weight, so there's that.
Personally and IMHO always, since I have such a terrible problem with heavily sugared and caffeinated sodas, especially Sunkist, there should be some regulations on ingredients and I don't mean "real sugar". I don't believe caffeine should ever be in a soda! That's straight up addiction and trying to hook people on it. Coffee and tea have it naturally. But sodas should be free of all drugs. Sugar isn't a drug, but it could be limited. But then we have all the screamers going " my rights my rights" I live in a place where people put full sugar mountain dew in sippy cups and bottles and then get mad when kiddos can't sleep. Wow.
Almost two yrs clean from soda. I tried one a little while back and I couldn’t drink it. Tasted like sweet sweet syrup.
Oh come on!! First sweets, candy and chocolate, now SODA! BAH!!!!
i gave up regular and diet soft drinks, and now only drink seltzer water once a day for my need for fizz
Negativity.
No, not being angry or sad for legit reasons, but just choosing to look at everything in a negative light.
This is coming from an optimist so take this with a grain of salt.
I'm what most people would describe as an optimist and the constant negativity of others is killing me. I Dont want to spend ym life thinking about how s**t everything is, I want to talk about that time I saw a woodpecker in the woods, or how cute my friend's cat is.
This is a bad habit that I catch myself in. It's not about choosing to look at everything negatively. It's a habit that sneaks up on you. I don't want to be negative, but I am sometimes. I'm working on this one.
Good on you. That's all we can do is recognize our shortcomings and strive to be a better person tomorrow. Good luck to you friend
Load More Replies...I can't associate with negative people. No matter what you say or do, it is bad. Crazy way to live. No thanks
"The Optimist believes that "This is the Best of Times" is true. The Pessimist fears this is true." :) But yes, Negativity can be just as toxic as toxic positivity. There is being a realist, and then there is being a downer just because.
I'll admit I am too negative overall (though I do have my light-hearted/goofy times), but I could never be super-positive all the time. That being said, I do make repeated attempts to be nicer/more positive, and usually feel better while it lasts. I tell myself that at least I keep trying...
Could say the same about positivism. It's insufferable. To choose to live in denial and not face reality really boggles the mind.
I honestly believe that due to toxic reality TV, drama online and messy tabloids, people are subconsciously addicted to negativity. I realized early on in dating that some women (and men too) feel like a relationship is not fulfilling unless there's some level of negativity or drama going on. I had to break it off with one of my ex's because she would legitimately pick fights with me in order for me to react in an outrageous way like people do on reality TV shows. I would want to talk out whatever was pissing her off that day. She actually told me "why don't you slam a door or punch a wall? You always wanna have boring talks about it. Push me or something." Broke it off with her a few days later.
Do you mean those NATTERING NABOBS OF NEGATIVISM of whom VP Spiro Agnew spoke ? Edit: Have been looking for a place for this post for YEARS. Check off #17 from bucket list.
Those talking videos with like 3 things happening on the screen simultaneously.
Social media is already absolutely atrocious for attention span, using that many distractions on a 30s clip just exponentially enhances that problem.
I recently introduced my daughter(5) to “YouTube Kids”. There are some really good aspects to this, she has learned so much already. BUT I have noticed a real decrease in her attention span when watching any other format. The ability to just skip/scan for other content the moment there is a lull in a video is a small but significant side effect. Films have become really difficult to watch all of a sudden… I can’t imagine what short format would do to her! 😬 (I am aware I sound like an old bastard saying “back in my day!” But honestly it’s a real problem)
Take it away, Stat! It can become a real problem and you can stop it now. Use books to educate her.

In the US, Red 40. Banned in several countries and restricted in many others. When kids get a "sugar rush," a lot of the time it is just the effect of red dye 40.
It has been linked to aggression and mental disorders like attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) in children. A review of 34 studies estimated that 8% of children with ADHD living in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada may have behavioral symptoms related to synthetic food colors. Studies in children with ADHD have demonstrated that restricting synthetic food dyes from the diet led to significant improvements in symptoms.
It's banned in the UK, as one of the Southampton six. Xenon is right, but we are also seeing lots of natural alternatives now.
Natural red is actually pretty easy. When I was in college, my University was working on beet skin extract as a "natural" food coloring. It would still be classified as an artificial coloring as far as the FDA is concerned though. The idea was that the beet sugar industry isn't using the skin, but the beet skin pigments were very potent. Extract the pigments and Bob's your uncle. Garbage to food coloring.
Load More Replies...Only one of them. There are many others and there are artificial alternatives that are not red 40 and don't cause problems. And cochenille red is nowadays mostly recreated in the lab since it's easier and cheaper anyway. It has the same chemical structure that is harmless but no lice were harmed in creating it.
Load More Replies...Yes, I think that’s what they were saying, that the “sugar rush” was actually likely the effect of the dye.
Load More Replies...I have ADHD and my response to red dye 40 was crazy until I was about 20 years old. My ears would turn red, my eyes would kind of glass over, and I'd go Tasmanian Devil crazy. I mean, giggling like a loon and banging my head against the table repeatedly at age two crazy. When I was a teen, I didn't need pot or pills to get high... I'd just buy a Slurpee.
Just to make something red? Why not just use a different color that’s not poison?
Sugar rush is a myth, so if any kids get high on something they ate, it isn't sugar
What is the actual science behind this? bc i keep hearing this but never actually seeing research proving it
24 hour news cycle.
If you watched it 24 hours straight, that would be toxic. However, not all of us have 9-to-5 jobs, so having the opportunity to watch when convenient for you is not toxic. Also, fake news is toxic regardless of the time of day.
There's a reason they only had two hours of news a day in the old days. Five-o'clock News and Eleven-o'clock news. There's only so much news. The 24hr networks had to fill the rest with editorial and opinion. That's how things turned toxic.
Load More Replies...That's all well and good for me, but others don't, and therein lies the problem.
Load More Replies...I used to work in a government facility that had Fox on all day long, on every TV. I’d rather we just not had the TVs at all…
Some news stations advertise how great they are and only give you 10 minutes of news an hour; the rest is commercials about how great they are plus regular commercials.
extremely harsh and self-hating words.
please be easier on yourselves & others. we are all being manipulated beyond belief to think the faults lie within ourselves. you are perfect as you are!
Be more kind. Both inwards and outwards, when you are kind or forgiving to yourself you find more space inside your thoughts to see your positives and your abilities, you accept your own frailties and see the strengths you have to move beyond them. Yes, critical thinking is important but if it’s not used to find a solution or to build better thought processes then it is simply self-abuse and no one benefits from abuse. Be more kind eh?
I'm my harshest critic, despite having been told by numerous people I should be less hard on myself. Thing is, that's kinda hard to do when you see next to nothing about yourself that's worth being positive about. Also, I'm terrified that if I start being kinder/more positive to myself, I'll swing over into narcissism :/
I’m working on this. As an American, I’m working two jobs full time trying to buy a car and move into a 2 bedroom apartment or house. My SO receives disability but his medications and medical treatment cut into our finances. I feel like I am not doing enough to help.

Load More Replies...Ugh. I used to be married to a guy that completely believed sex = love. Would literally try for at least once a day. The first six months? Sure. 12 years later? Get the f*ck off of me. If I told him I wanted to read my new book, what he heard was "I don't want to spend time with you". Most immature, insecure man I've ever known. The last time I turned him down he screamed at me that I didn't love him anymore. And a light bulb went off. I looked him right in the eyes and said "You know what, Mike? You're absolutely right. I DON'T love you anymore. I want a divorce". And felt this HUGE weight drop from my shoulders.
This one ties in nicely with social media (see above). Do I really need to see what you had for breakfast?
There's definitely a balance in this. If you're payed no attention at all, ever, that can be crushing for your mental health, but people like influences and celebrities are addicted to it and that's really even less healthy
It's the real reason I started commenting online, but I found a fix. I never read replies. Ever. Kicked that habit. Go ahead, try me.
Sitting lol
Bed is nice. Bed is warm. Bed doesn't judge you. Bed is just cozy and soft. I wish I was in bed.
Load More Replies...In the future they'll probably find out that worrying that everything is bad for you is also bad for you. I'm exhausted after working all day, and they want to tell me that sitting down is bad. But then they say that working too many hours is bad for you, too. So which is it? Maybe just let me relax while I can.
Sitting in place for too long can actually be detrimental to your health, as can laying in bed all day. Without moving for long periods of time, you increase your chances of blood clots, that's why they tend to administer anticoagulant meds when you are admitted to the hospital for a few days. However, standing up in the same position with limited movement for long periods can have the same effect.
Between having scoliosis and Degenerative Disk Disease, I’d rather not sit. Sitting hurts more.
Smart phones
Nah, they're useful. The problems with them relate to the social media apps on them, which others on this channel have commented on. I suggest you just uninstall the social media apps. The smartphone itself is useful. For example, I really appreciate the GPS apps because I can avoid traffic and reduce my carbon footprint by not unnecessarily sitting in stationary traffic.
Having a pocket sized computer that can hook you up to the internet and answer any question in a few seconds has caused the most profound changes in society I've ever seen. End of the day though, humans are tool users and it's just one more tool. It's how you use it that matters.
Load More Replies...Whether it's a smart phone or social media, there's good and bad. It depends on how they're used.
When I was a kid in the 50s we kids would be gone all day walking miles from home and going home when it got dark. This was in the D.C. area. But I got my daughters pagers and then phones because times have changed. Our parents couldn't tell us to come home (Heh, heh!). But we could call them from a pay phone if we needed to. As I get older I can call for assistance if I need to. The apps are definitely the problem.
I'm self employed, as well as being employed by the government. There's no way I could do my job without a smart phone.
Remeber the monolith in 2001 a space odyssey. looks eerily like a mobile phone.
Smartphones are not bad, I just wish they had actual buttons. Touch screen is a pain.
