Snails are adored by photographers and kids alike, perhaps because of the beautiful homes they carry on their backs all the time. Unfortunately, even those sturdy homes can’t protect them from people who unknowingly step on them. Some improved visibility might save their lives!
To save these creatures from our boots, some compassionate people started to paint their shells. When these snails’ shells are colorfully painted, it’s hard to miss them crawling around. If you want to decorate your garden snails’ shells be sure to use non-toxic paint only, and try not to scare the snail too much or she may crawl out and leave her house behind!
It all may have started when someone noticed this little snail passing by an apartment complex

Some people do it just for the sake of art, but it still saves a lot of lives:

Most animals try to avoid bright colors, as they signal danger and mean that the animal may be poisonous, so the paintjob may even protect them from other creatures

I must say it is a very nice idea and creative, but I also think it's better to leave nature run its course...
I dont think humans stepping on snails and crushing them was ever part of nature running it's course
Load More Replies...I love this idea! I belong to the S.S.S (Slug Saver Society ) of Bellingham Wa. We move slugs off sidewalks and out of the sun.
Also makes them a superb target for Snail Eating animals and Birds...nice! :(
Not really they avoid bright colored animals because they are usually poisonous
Load More Replies...Uh the reason snails look the way they do is so they'll blend in and birds won't eat them. nice idea , but now these snails will be lunch :(
it's disrespectful. maybe somebody could paint turtle's shell, or maybe somebody's face?
Don't ever, ever, ever paint a turtle shell. It harms them. Also, never drill a hole in their shell for a chain either.
Load More Replies...My father had a snail farm (yes, a snail farm) when I was a child, I liked painting their shells.
Acrylic paint, though non-toxic, will likely gum up and even block the GI tracts of predators. This is simply not a good idea. At all.
...Not to mention it could put the lil' guys off from mating with one another.
Load More Replies...I think it should be made illegal to step on snails! They are poo@poop adorable! Painting their shells is a great idea!
🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ Hope you've changed your mind 6 fkin years later, mate.

what paint is safe for them??? I personally have pet snails, at would like to spice it up! still love their orignal shells tho! but still lol!!!
"And try not to scare her or she may crawl out and leave her house behind" Where did this come from? If a snail is scared, she will go INTO her shell. Snails can't just crawl out of their shell, any more than you can crawl out of your skin. A snail shell is part of her body. And nice idea, but I think it would be better just to leave them alone. I doubt the bright colours will deter birds, and it probably isn't a good idea to get rid of the snail's camouflage
You classify a snail shell as being their homes when it's more than that. A shell for a snail is a bone, party of their body it protects their organs which are wrapped inside the rings of the shell. I encourge you guys to NOT COPY THIS, painting a snail shell would cause serious breathing problems for their organs and could make the ill due to the ink leaking through to their organs, even if its NON TOXIC. They also take in sunlight from their shell when painting it you are blocking something intergral.
Only to remember, "nature is wise". It's better don't alter its course.
Snails absorb sunlight through there shells, painting them is only going to kill them slowly. As opposed to stepping on them . Well done.

No se que derecho creeis que teneis sobre el caracol para pintarle, da igual que sea pintura no tóxica.
Also, "pimp" refers to slave-owners who exploit women's labor for money. It doesn't mean "make cool". Lets stop using it that way.
Nature is perfect and beautiful the way it is. Why does man feel the need to "improve" it? We haven't done a very good job so far.

This is pretty but stupid for 2 reasons A/Paint will damage the Snails Shell and B/You might as well advertise them to all their predators
This is idiotic. Birds will now have a great time finding their next meal.
You may be making them more visible to predators (birds), so it kind of defeats the point..
you should painted one like Gary the snails shell xD awesome btw
I thought their shells are breathable. Won't be a paint harmful for them?
But what about the birds and the animals that eat snails. They see them better now don't they?
This is so sweet idea. I hope snails are not too frightened by painting on them.
what the f***? really? is this neccessary? I am sure they don't like to be paint. nice welcome to be eaten. I don't like it.....
what the f````` really? is this neccessary?? I don't like it! I am sure they don't want to be paint...
Looks cool but its stupid way of "helping" snails, for some reasons they don't want to be seen. People are not the only danger (birds, etc.)
Are you sure that paint dont harm they... İn that paint there are so many chemicals...
STUPID, AND LIFE THREATENING (TO SNAILS ALL OVER THE GLOBE) THIS IS NOT COOL(SAYS TURBO) AN OUTRAGE (SAYS VEGAN PEOPLE)
It's cute until you have all of these pimped out snails eating your vegetable garden.
I wish there was a way to pimp out my plants so the snails wouldn't eat them!
It's adorable and whimsical. As long as it doesn't harm any creatures, what's not to love?
amé los caracoles pintados, siempre quito del camino o de la vista tanto caracoles como sapos la gente los pisa y muchas veces queriendo :(
Cute but this also makes them more visible to predators such as birds so they die either way.
Respect the desire to save them but don't know if it really is gonna save them.
I think this is toxic to the animal... what kind of paint is used? Still prefer the "natural" Nature
To the people arguing that "they can't breathe": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumostome . In a snail: http://goo.gl/BIcKas
I think this is a great idea, as long as people are protecting the little guys and using the proper paint!!
Short story of it. The paint clogs up the pours in the shell so oxygen can't get in. no oxygen no snail. sorry about the bad news guys.
I like the first pic "still kicking around" after 2 months. He has actually been severely traumatized by the incident and is running away ;)
This is the short version,The paint clogs up the pours in the shell so oxygen can' get in. thus the snail dies. sorry about the bad news
OK SO WHO IS RIGHT?,should we NOT paint the shell so that the birds dont get em, or should we so that the birds think that the,re poisonous?
