Solitude of the elderly is a topic that often seems to be neglected. It is warming to see how little action can have much effect!

This! The simple gift of something small instead of a stupid mentality and accusing the bloke. This small thing makes a huge difference. Kudos to that person!

Especially on this site where so many of the posts seem to focus on petty passive-aggressive responses to situations where a simple word, delivered with a smile might have solved it without hard feelings.

Nice story, my mother and I both love the game the Jumble in the newspaper. If one of us got up before the other we would do the game on a separated piece of paper. This went on until the day she died at 86. I still do the jumble every day and it reminds me of her.

I looked after a residential complex for the elderly - had to phoneall of them every morning to ensure all were ok. . This 100 year old resident was deaf - didnt hear the phone - didnt hear his doorbell. One time I had to enter his flat to ensure he was ok - he was quiet and unmoving in bed- i couldnt hear him breathing or see his chest moving. I gently touched his wrist - dont know who screamed loudest - me or him

That is so sweet. That old guy was sharp.roght to the end too. I can't imagine completing a crossword in 10 minutes, much less with the harmless guilt associated with appropriating my neighbour's paper under cover of darkness. You handled the whole situation with a genuinely high level of compassion. It really was nothing more than a head scratching victimless crime that became a real human bond. If only people would employ the vast resources of technology available to us to commit acts of decency like this instead of the disgusting things smartphones have wrought upon us instead.
