The wedding season is upon us. So, once again, it’s time to dive into the worst bridesmaid or groomsman outfits known to humankind while coping with awkward seating arrangements. There are many etiquette rules when it comes to being a wedding guest. And while you can get away with breaking a few of them, there are some sacred ones you should always abide by. Wearing a white gown to witness other people get married, as you might guess, is one of them. However, when Amy Pennza’s mother-in-law showed up to her big day with a bridal gown, Amy wasn’t even mad. She understood her. But if you want to know how a woman can pull off such wedding attire and get away with it, you need to read Amy’s explanation.

Ignoring the dress code isn’t the only way to get unwanted attention at a wedding. And you don’t have to be an expert on etiquette to avoid it. Common decency is enough. For starters, keep your phone on silent because a ceremony where the couple exchange vows only to be interrupted by an obnoxious ringtone isn’t exactly ideal. Heck, you can even play it safe and unplug it for the entire event. Secondly, try to avoid complaining if something isn’t to your liking. Months — sometimes even years — go into the preparation of a wedding. Everything from the venue to the menu is selected after careful planning, and by the time the big day rolls around, chances are that the bride and groom are probably pretty proud of how it turned out. So whether it’s too hot or the food isn’t up to your standards, make an effort of keeping your opinions to yourself. Also, even though weddings are a celebration and you’re supposed to have fun, be aware of your alcohol intake. As great as open bars are, spending all of your time sipping the free wine and beer could lead to doing plenty of things that will be captured in photos for life.

Despite everything the daughter in law didn't mind, and she is the only one's opinion that counts,so please stop with all the negative words,so depressingly tired
I think the other thing you learn growing up in poverty is how to share. So what if she showed up in a wedding dress? My own mother would never watch her own grandson without expecting payment. She would constantly bad-mouth our relationship to anyone who would listen "It won't last a year," she'd say. My MIL was a generous kind woman that was so proud of her grandson and of me for believing in her son. And if my MIL had shown up to my wedding wearing a wedding dress..I'd have gladly shared the floor and the light with her...because she deserved nothing less. We sadly lost her in 2014. And I'd give anything to see her today...wedding dress or not. Some things in this world are just not worth getting angry over. Who cares what she wore...she's there for them when they need it, she loves them and that's all that matters.
I think I would have actually busted out laughing if my MIL had shown up to our wedding wearing a bridal gown.
Load More Replies...When I was getting married I wore a dark suit. So did my dad. So did her dad. So did my close friends. I never thought twice about it since then.
Hahaha, this shows exactly how ridiculous protocols about clothing actually are. Very good point
Load More Replies...I say if the real bride of the day isn't upset, no one on the internet has any right to be upset over this situation. Yeah, it was a bad move by mom but people make mistakes. Honestly I read this article because I was looking for a funny horror story but it sounds rather sweet with more details, even if misguided.
When someone is that special or important to you, it really doesn't matter that they screwed up that one time.
Frugality is not synonymous with ignorance or stupidity or mental instability.
Spindlemaker Shame on your narrow-minded hypercritical personality. My condolences to people who suffer your cruel tongue.
Load More Replies...Both sets of my Grandparents and my parents all lived through the great US depression of the 1920's and 30's. Believe me, I know what frugal is, the Bride's description is spot on. Nothing got thrown away that could be used, especially food. When I was a kid, the family was not rich but doing OK, but my Gran would would drive herself crazy looking for the elusive "best price". They had money enough, but old habits die hard - they well remembered when they didn't know what was going to happen day to day. And I am so grateful they taught me habits of thrift, to be frugal, not cheep. As for the dress, I don't think it's really important.
My grandparents got engaged 2 weeks before the stock market crash. My grandmother wanted my grandfather to sell the engagement ring he'd bought her. He wouldn't hear of it and worked several jobs to make sure they had enough for her to not only keep her ring, but pay for the wedding and build her a home. They were inseparable, even after he passed away. She, in an alzheimer's induced state, would often be found wandering through neighbors yards looking for her husband, Bill. The neighbors knew what was going on and would tell her he was at work and they'd bring her back home to "wait for him." We eventually had to have someone with her 24/7. She passed 6 years after him. And when my father passed last month, he called to his mother before taking his last breath. I'm happy knowing they're all together again.
Load More Replies...it's only a blinkin dress...good grief, get along with the mother-in-law...forget it and let it go
You seem to have accepted her reasoning that the dress was a good bargain. Have you been to a thrift store recently? They are overflowing with mother of the bride, prom, party dresses, gala gowns. There was absolutely no reason for her to buy a bridal dress. This is attention seeking behavior at its finest.
What does it matter? They all seems happy with each other and that's the important thing here.
Load More Replies...Could be seen as overly dramatical but I'd leave wedding. Life is too short to waste it with people like that. But good for the bride if she could tolerate it.
M&M You sure as hell wouldn't make it into MY wedding with your nasty b***h face and attitude. Overly dramatic is too kind a descriptive for the likes of someone like you.
Load More Replies...There are two things that I noticed, both having little to do with the mother-in-law: A cop at a wedding? Seriously? Why on earth? And secondly: many people ask if the bridge cussed the groom. Holding your partner liable for his or her parents is the best way to end a relationship!
She should have dyed the dress a different colour. If she didn't drive around so much hunting for bargains, she could have saved a load on petrol and bought something else for a few bucks more. She could have worn something she already had in the closet. She could have borrowed something. There is no excuse for wearing white to a wedding if the bride wears white. I understand MIL is a lovely lady, but there were other alternatives.
Sounds like a made up twitter story for some social media exposure, I mean, she's an author after all. Plus she used a few very clear literary devices like the initial hook line to stir up inquiry and then the following opposition twist to the reader's preconceived plot.
Love the backstory, however, I agree with MatchaMutt”s Twitter comment: Why couldn’t the MIL have bought a bargain dress in any other color than bride-white? Fame must have been in the back of her mind.
All I see is plain white dress - nothing over the top. I think the bride under dressed for the occasion and mother in law upstage her. Does not help the fact the mother in law looks very young. I can see why they were competing for attention. I am glad the bride was able to look past the mistake and move on. After all people should be judged by the content of their character and not by one event.
If you are a woman who wears a wedding dress to your son's wedding: 1. F**k you. 2. Go see a psychiatrist.

I understand the reason she had for wearing it and I'm glad everyone involved was fine with it in the end. But. All she had to do was buy a bottle of Rit for $2 and boom, any color dress you want.
Who really saves olives and celery for a salad ? Who really throws away cold cuts out the subway sandwich? Who really lets ice melt for it to become water? This is a total bs story. Ppl make anything up for clout.
Sorry, but if she was such a bargain hunter, she could have hunt down a regular party dress, not a wedding one. C'mon.
It's a pity that one of the things she didn't grow up with was parents who taught her how to respect others. I was in a charity store the other day and I found a beautiful silk blue dress that would have been perfect for a wedding for less than a fifth what it would have been new. You can get bargains everywhere for anything.
MIL should have hemmed that dress and wore a scarf. Or maybe she never had a wedding of her own? Or maybe she really wanted to marry her son? Who knows? Still taking the limelight away from the bride.
The most telling line: "... I was worried it might hurt her feelings, ..." The new DIL is a class act. The act of getting married was the most important part of the day, and she was so compassionate towards her MIL. Whatever feelings this story may bring up in my, I'm just thankful that this frugal lady won the lottery with her new DIL.
A gracious bride who appreciates the woman who raised her husband. She seems to know what is really important... a free babysitter (LOL) I believe Amy will have a very happy family life.
It was her wedding. It's her MIL. It's her family and all the weird quirks that go with it. You should all be laughing at the fun of it all, because SHE IS. Her opinion is the only thing that matters. I loved this story! 😂😂😂 So wonderful and unique!
So why 'shame' your MIL online for attention in a way that obviously baited people to respond?
This was kinda unsatisfying to read lol. Like I came here for drama and she turned out to be a nice person
This story seems unbelievable and the story behind the story is disappointing.

No. That is rubbish and was for no other reason than to draw attention to herself. Just no. If she was that frugal, she wouldn't have bought a wedding gown, even on sale, as they are expensive. She would have bought a regular dress from a second hand store.
I like the story, but it is still a crappy thing to do to the bride. When I got married the last time, my dress was white with a silver overlay, a summer type dress, garden wedding.
