Giant Rat Drags Human By Her Hand To Show Her A Baby, And It’s The Most Adorable Thing You’ll See Today

A video showing a huge rat grabbing her human’s finger and dragging her to show off her baby is going viral, reminding us of how little we actually know about rats – one of the most intelligent animals in the world.

Rats are highly social and communicate with each other using high-frequency sounds that we can’t hear without instrumentation. They like to play together, cuddle, and wrestle. Jaak Panksepp, a neuroscientist at Bowling Green State University, suggests that when playing or being tickled, rats make chirping sounds that are strikingly similar to human laughter. “[Y]oung rats have a marvelous sense of fun,” says the professor.

When rats bond with their human companions, it’s for life. So, if they’re suddenly given away to someone else or neglected, they can even die of sadness. Just like humans, if they don’t have companionship, rats get lonely, anxious, stressed, and depressed.

Oh, and the big rat we see in the video is most likely a Giant Pouched rat. These types of rats are used in Africa to sniff out landmines. Talk about intelligent creatures!

Assuming that smaller mammals are stupid, dirty, unsocial, or whatever else negative, is just dumb. Despite their negative public image, rats seem to be really clever – and they are adorable on top of that.

Unsocial? Rats are well famous for being very social. People are just historically scared of them because of plague.

Beautiful! I once owned a pet rat and one night when he was out of water he managed to get out of his cage, jumped down of the desk it was on, climbed up on my bed, woke me up by pulling my eye lids, jumped of the bed, ran towards the desk and jumped up to show me the problem. Really. So this does 'nt surprise me.

We used to keep rats and we had one who *definitely* was laughing when we tickled her ribs. Amazing creatures.

Isn't there a much better video with this 'fancy rat' showing off her little one?

I am the biggest fan of rats, don't get me wrong, but it's anthropomorphising to say that the rat is taking the human to see its babies. It's actually quite a well known behaviour of rodents to drag babies back to the nest instinctively and sometimes they get a bit confused. So it's less *come see my babies!* and more *naughty strangely shaped baby, get back to the nest!*

I have to assume this is someone's pet, because I only know of two reactions to a wild rat coming up to take your hand in its mouth: "Aaaargh, kill it, kill it" and "oh, there's supper, kill it, kill it". So I'm a cynic.

When I was a kid, my parents took on the job of watching 2 large white rats for our neighbor, who was going on vacation. We enjoyed them so much; they were affectionate, playful and extremely smart. I would never mind having one or two as pets. Note: when you adopt any animal, it's FOREVER; you treat them with love, kindness and respect, and never decide you don't want them anymore. They have feelings, too.

This certainly isn't the first time I've mentioned how much I wish humans communicated as clearly as other mammals. Why can't we just say what we mean, like they do? I mean, if a coyote likes you, you'll definately know it! And it's hard to believe this even needs pointing out, but most other animals DON'T HAVE HANDS - if they want to hold *your* hand, they have to use their *mouth*! HOLDING YOUR HAND does NOT equal BITING!
