Minecraft Movie Sparks ‘Annoying’ Cinema Trend That Viewers Say Is ‘Ruining’ The Whole Experience
To cheer or not to cheer? That seems to be the age-old question in movie etiquette nowadays.
As the recently released A Minecraft Movie hit cinemas globally, fans of the original video game flocked to theatres to see if it met all of their wild expectations.
And it seems to be going pretty well. Most reviews on Google and from other outlets have described the film as entertaining and “truly special” — but of course, the negative reviews are to be expected, as well.
- 'A Minecraft Movie' is expected to make $140 million domestically on opening weekend, with even more from outside the States.
- Fans cheered loudly and chanted 'Chicken Jockey' in a specific scene, causing mixed reactions.
- Moviegoers were split on theater etiquette — some enjoy cheering, others find it distracting.
Is it annoying for fans to cheer during movies when in theatres?

Despite it all, however, the movie has chartered a path to success, expecting to make $140 million domestically during its opening weekend, which was much higher than anticipated, as well as an additional $100 million from outside the United States.
A few moviegoers have even decided to film snippets of their Minecraft experience, the footage showing certain moments that prompted the audience to cheer and clap loudly.

According to The Independent, one moment, featured heavily in the film’s trailer, saw Jack Black’s Steve and Jason Momoa’s Garett Garrison confronting a cuboid Minecraft chicken in a boxing ring, who is ridden around the ring by another character.
Steve exclaims, “Chicken jockey!” which is a reference to the video game — and it caused many fans in the movies to go wild.
People were heard chanting the line along with Black and whopping after it was delivered. On social media, it appeared as if this specific moment was beloved by many theatres, as well.

@salesmenpod This whole night was surreal and one of the most unforgettable movie experiences I’ve ever had. . . #minecraft#movie#minecraftmovie#chicken#jockey#chickenjockey#fyp#viral#reaction#funny#meme#moviereview#featureme#clips#comedy#video#videogames#games#game♬ original sound – Salesmen: After Hours
“My theatre clapped every time Jack Black name dropped a Minecraft item that was in the trailers, and when he said Chicken Jockey I sh–t you not the entire row in front of me gave a standing ovation,” one person shared.
Another said, “Just got back from watching the movie myself, can confirm everyone in the theatre collectively yelled ‘CHICKEN JOCKEY’ during that moment and it was glorious ngl.”
“This is what made me love my experience more, bc even though the movie wasn’t as bad as i thought it was going to be, the packed cinema with everyone shouting, clapping and cheering whenever jack black name dropped something genuinely gave me so much joy,” a third commented.

But the practice of being vocal during movies isn’t exactly loved by everyone. Of course, it’s a moment fueled by genuine excitement and loved by some audience members. Others, however, think it can be distracting and even rude.
“NO LITERALLY my friends and i’s entire movie experience got ruined by these kids yelling ‘absolute cinema’ and clapping super aggressive. they would quote things constantly and it was just really annoying!!!!! Normalize movie theatre etiquette!!!!” one critic wrote.
Some people were displeased at the audience’s reaction, saying it ruined their movie experience

Another slammed, “I’m going insane. Am I the only one who despises movie screenings like this? If you’re cheering for something other than a meme, fine, but this f–cking obnoxious.”
Someone else chimed in, “We need to stop allowing this kind of behavior btw, cinema etiquette is nonexistent in America, don’t let it spread here.”
A Minecraft Movie is in cinemas now. Based on a few netizens, it appears as if the project will guarantee at least a few laughs and bring on a sense of joy.
“I had low expectations,” one reviewer wrote on Facebook. “Took my teens and thought I would enjoy a nap. I laughed so friggin hard. Hysterical. So dumb. But so funny.”

A user said, “Great movie, reminded me of a lot of 80 fantasy movies I loved so much. It’s simply fun. And all songs were bangers.”
Another implied that it was a movie for everyone to enjoy — regardless of age and whether or not you’ve played the game!
“I (40+, plays Minecraft), my daughter (14, barely plays), and my son (24, doesn’t play) watched it the moment it came out,” they said. “We absolutely loved it!”
Comments were somewhat divided on how they would feel in a loud theatre

If I were a young person, I'd probably be ok with it. As an cranky old woman, I'll stay home + leave the fun to the kids.
You mean the show with a cult following that is meant to have audience participation? What about it?
Load More Replies...For the love of God, this isn't Downton Abby. It's a kid movie. If you're upset at kid stuff happening at a kid movie stay home and watch Wuthering Heights again.
I've watched movies at festivals with crowd participation and it made it really fun. Have separate screenings. "interactive" and "quiet". Like they do for captions and autism and parental screenings. It's not rocket science and may help traditional cinema survive!
You can't suggest that, it's logical! 😱 Not, but, if I went to the movies anymore, I'd definitely suggest that to my theater as it's a great idea. 👍
Load More Replies...That's why I don't go to the cinema anymore, people are annoying as hell. I'll stay at home with my pizza, my couch, and free pirates streaming sites.
I don’t go to the movies because there’s too many germs…..and I’m asocial
Load More Replies...We saw the film on Friday and a bunch of teen did this and then left the cinema after that scene. During the build up they all got their phones out with the torches on. They were told more than once to shut it by staff. They were s***s who made watching film for everyone else a very frustrating experience. The film itself was good. My son gave it 10 stars.
For everyone saying "they're just kids having fun", did you even watch the videos. These aren't kids, they're teen and adults doing this because of a TikTok trend
I’m ok with spontaneous reactions. Did this feel a little contrived to anyone else? Feels like a stunt for social media.
They should do 2 screenings one for the quiet people and one for the lively ones. Problem solved.
The last time I went to the theater, there was someone a few rows ahead holding up their phone and trying to record the entire thing. People behind them were throwing popcorn and yelling at them to put the phone down. Finally, two ushers showed up to walk the guy out.
Thankfully, at the showing I went to, there was no cheering or anything during the movie.
the problem is the fully grown adults doing this sort of cr@p in a theater, not the kids? obviously???
This is literally a silly kids movie, nobody is doing this stuff in Dune 2. People need to relax
I saw Four Weddings and A Funeral when it came out and some bloke in there kept making comments eg "look at the size of her hat" extremely loudly! So it does happen but it's usually one single twonk doing it rather than groups! I also went to a ballet a few years ago and an older couple of ladies seemed to think they were at home in their living room "ooh Ethel, that's the pretty girl who was dancing earlier" - I was unsuccessful in my attempt to tell the latter lot to 'shhh' as I had laryngitis at the time and no sound came out of my mouth! People eh?!!
Load More Replies...Going to a movie is a shared experience. Talking during the movie is a no no. However, when events like this happen spontaneously in a theatre its part of it. Like when everyone in the theatre went nuts at Darth Vader and luke in empire etc. Want absolute quiet? Stream it. I'm more appalled that this is a movie at all. Waiting for the next movie 'Uno'
Now though I hate crunching, sweet wrapper rustling, talking etc during a film, I still remember fondly the first film I saw when visiting New York was Panic Room. Everyone cheered when Jodie Foster was escaping, someone even shouted “go girl” and I thought it was really funny and added to the experience as it’s very rare I’ve ever heard anyone cheering in the UK.
I saw ‘Wicked’ in a packed theater. The audience included teens to 60+. The audience all laughed and got dead silent and got teary eyed all at the same points in the film. We all clapped at the end after that final epic note and went our separate ways. That’s how a movie experience should be. I expected the gaggle of teenage girls beside me to ruin the film but they were respectful of everyone else and watched the movie without saying a peep during the entire thing. It was the best theater experience I’ve had in about a decade.
Honestly, all the people cheering was the best part about it, but yeah, you should probably wait if you actually want to watch the movie as is..
I hear that people would stand up and clap.after Jennifer Hudson's song in Dreamgirls and honestly, l'd have LOVED to see that. In Europe no one says a word during movies.
Some people are such "stick in the muds"! Some films are designed for cheering and audience participation. Some of my best favourite experiences watching films have been when someone shouts out something really funny at one point! Those are in smaller cinemas though. One used to host "All Night Horror Madness". Started at around 8pm until 8am the next day. They were shlocky type films, tickets were around £15 for the night and while alcohol wasn't really allowed in? They'd turn a blind eye so long as you weren't say, getting aggressive or anything. They were so much fun! We'd cheer and people would make jokes during them! Once they showed Jaws as the first film and everyone shouted the famous line, "WE'RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT!!!" 😄 That said, yes, there's certain films you don't really want others being loud or with phones going off during them but some films are designed for audience participation to reiterate... If you want to watch a film in complete silence then maybe wait...
Until it comes out on DVD, Netflix or whatever other media platform? It's a shared experience for a lot of people and audience participation can make it fun! 🙂

As long as people don't go over the top, it's harmless fun. Just took my 3 sons, 11,14 and 17 to see it tonight. It was funny and stupid but in a good way. The vocal cheers and chants only made it a more fun and enjoyable experience. Let people have fun.
Man, they would have hated the midnight showings of the Star Trek movies when those were being released... it's not a drama, it's not a documentary, it's a fun kids movie.
There's a big difference. I saw all those classic Trek films in the theater. The cheering was reserved for the end of the movie, and it wasn't a bunch of attention seeking teens and twenty-somethings jumping up & down like idiots in the hopes they go "viral" on TikTok, it was mature, respectful adults standing and applauding when the credits rolled.
Load More Replies...Is it annoying and cringe for some one old like me, yes. But I am not so much of curmudgeonly old fool that I forgot what fun was. Sometimes you have to let it go because fighting it just makes everyone miserable. Besides, it doesn't seem crazy at all to cheer at winks in a movie. People have been doing it long before this movie came out.
