The Cosby Show alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner has passed away at the age of 54, multiple outlets have confirmed. The actor reportedly lost his life due to an accidental dr*wning during a family vacation in Costa Rica. 

A representative for the actor has not issued an official statement, though news of the tragedy has been confirmed by people reportedly familiar with the matter.

    Warner first rose to prominence playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, where he portrayed the only son of Bill Cosby’s character from 1984 to 1992. 

    It was a role that launched him into stardom and earned him an Emmy nomination during the show’s peak.

    Reflecting on the experience in 2023, Warner toldPeople, “I know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of.”

    He acknowledged that the show’s legacy had become more complicated in light of allegations made against Bill Cosby, saying, “Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I’m still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture.”

    Following his breakout role, Warner built a notable acting career, according toTMZ

    He co-starred with Eddie Griffin in the sitcom Malcolm & Eddie from 1996 to 2000 and later joined Tracee Ellis Ross in Reed Between the Lines, which ran from 2011 to 2015.

    His resume also included appearances in Suits, The Resident, Major Crimes, 9-1-1, and Alert: Missing Persons Unit.

    In addition to acting, Warner made a name for himself in music, winning a Grammy Award in 2015. He also voiced a character in the educational and popular animated series The Magic School Bus.

    His final project explored vulnerability and mental health in the Black community

    In his final year, Warner launched a podcast called Not All Hood, which he cohosted with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley. 

    The show aimed to provide a space for honest conversations about mental health in the Black community.

    In a 2023 interview with People, Warner explained that the podcast was “an interesting experience for me, because it’s a place where I feel safe enough to be able to be as vulnerable as I allow myself to be.”

    He continued, “When we talk about the Black community, we tend to speak of it as a monolith when the reality is there are so many different facets of the Black community, and we wanted to have a space where we can really explore, discuss, and acknowledge all of those different aspects.”

    Social media users have reacted with shock at the news of Warner’s passing, with many expressing their grief over his loss.

    “Oh, this is terrible news. I always adored MJW all these years. He was such a handsome man with kind eyes and an infectious smile. I’m so deeply sorry for his loved ones. What a tragic loss,” one commenter wrote.

    Most remembered Warner for his iconic roles over the years.
