New Pixar-Like Short Film About A Boy Coming Out Is Taking Internet By Storm Because, Well, Just Watch It
Get your tissues handy – you’re going to need them after watching In a Heartbeat. It’s a new animated short film that is absolutely breaking the Internet, and it’s so necessary in today’s climate of intolerance and hate.
In a Heartbeat was put together by Ringling College of Art and Design students Beth David and Esteban Bravo as their computer animation thesis, but it has now taken on much more of a life than just a school project. It deals with a young boy struggling to come to terms with his feelings for a handsome peer, a topic never previously explored by animated film, and features an adorable jumping heart that is just begging to be made into a new Pixar mascot. In just 4 minutes, it captures the experience of countless LGBTQ youth, and shows them that there’s nothing to be afraid of.
The Florida students managed to successfully crowdfund almost 5 times their original estimated costs to produce the film through Kickstarter, and their hard work is paying off. Since hitting YouTube, In a Heartbeat has racked up over 5 million views, and everyone watching it is begging for a sequel. Take in the touching short for yourself below, and find out what people are saying about it!

Share on FacebookAbsolutely independent of the content, quality, intention, and ramifications of this film, it is shocking to see how the commenting goes even here on Bored Panda, where people normally are not so close-minded and rather well-mannered. The unsubstantiated hatred is hard to endure. Why not criticise, argue against, provide alternatives? Just putting out hatred is something to be ashamed of. I know there are a few trolls who just enjoy writing what provokes angry replies. But those who just insult and communicate their hatred, how do they look into the mirror each morning? Some actually seem to have created accounts just for this purpose. What do they seek? I mean, they can neither "convince" someone (for they post no arguments) nor give the impression that there is a majority against a given position (since the hatred is way too scattered). I do not get it, but I think it is very sad.
Hans I get you. Bored Pandas comment system is really easy to abuse and the site gets flooded by lots of hateful comments latley. Often there is a much deeper agenda behind each comment - an article about painted Barbie leads to a rant how Islam destroys western civilization, an article about a cute child how LGTBQs are horrible. Bored Panda is not the feel-good place anymore, I've already deleted my old account and I will delete this one too.

Load More Replies...What!? An animated short that recognizes that the LGBTQ portion of the population is made of people just like you and I? I did get teared up watching this, because I remember my heart aching when I had my first crush when I was younger and because feeling that way makes you SO vulnerable. And you recreated that so beautifully here. Bravo, Pixar.
This is... pure beauty. As a pansexual I fully feel how this boy feels most of the time, and I think it is gorgeous
And whoever down voted me for liking both genders, you don't have to be okay with me being pansexual, just please respect me a little more? I'm only twelve and I don't even understand why some people can't stand to hear me say that I am pansexual
Load More Replies...Why say this is a story about "coming out"? This is just a simple story about falling in love, we need to stop with all the labelling
You're right, it's about falling in love, and it should be just that. But whenever someone falls in love with someone from the same sex, the moment he or she does something about it is basically a coming out for them. Because there's at least one person now who knows about your preferences, and you make yourself vulnerable to ridicule or even hatred. It's why the boy tried so hard to catch his heart - he was scared of it being broken by someone else, maybe even smashed to dust. In the process, he ripped it apart. I love this little film, because without big words and big gestures, it says a lot. But yes, you're absolutely right - it's "just" about falling in love. You could make the same film with a boy and a girl, and it would be the same thing. The same fear of ridicule haunts everyone who falls in love with someone he/she thought above one's own "station". It is the same thing - So... why isn't it the same thing? It damn well should be!

But that's reality, folks. If you think this gay thing is not how God meant things to be, ask yourself if God meant for anything in this world to be as it is today. God did mean for one thing to be though: love. Ah yeah and he also mentioned the not judging thing. Kinda relevant.
Now Leni, define true love as God/Christ/Holy Spirit intends it be. Does true love contain the component of mere acceptance or the component of the forgiveness of transgression?

This isn't about sex. Kids at this age start to have crushes. This short shows 2 boys...so what. As a grown gay man, I still feel there are times when I should hold back the fact that I have a husband (though I don't) of 15 years. People can be so cruel and judgmental. I think about some of these ridiculous comments and if the boy in this short had read them they probably would push him back into the closet, because all he would see is a world of unacceptance. I hope that some of you don't end up with gay children, because it is a apparent that they won't be accepted. Sad, just sad.
I'm twelve, and the only reason I haven't come out yet is my school is full of people who are homophobic. The world needs more things like this.
This is not PIxar... lol I agree with the story and have no issues with the structure, just the fact you named it Pixar when it isn't... Not all CGI films are PIxar.. Seems desperate for clicks when you purposefully rename it that way....
This was soo moving. Regardless of sexual orientation, everyone can relate to this short film. The fact that it centers on 2 boys in such an intolerable climate like school is reflective of the way society in general still see these situations. I absolutely loved IN A HEARTBEAT.
I have a new ship. Where is my crew?! Come on! All aboard the ship! It's pre-built and ready to sail!!!
This was absolutely beautiful. I love everything about it (#; v ;#) Thank you so much for sharing this!
I loved this video, it actually made me cry at the end. Love is love, and people need to express and accept that. Especially when its young kids being shown like in this video.
Oh my goodness what an amazing little film. So powerful. I shouted out loud 'don't break it' when his heart snapped in two. Fabulous even in the closing credits with the heartbeat echoing. Loved it.
Standing up in front of computer screen applauding loudly with happy tears streaming down my face!! BRAVO!!!!!!
This is full of compassion and awareness, tenderness and comments without words. I love it. We need more, a lot more.

Load More Replies...I definitely don't like this short cut. When my son watched this which he found by coincidence, he said "it was disgusting" He was 14 year in that time. So, he knew that it was wrong to show it as something natural. Imagine that a boy who is 3 or 4 watch this thing without parents guidance. For that reason, parents must know what their children can find it on Internet. Therefore, it is very irresponsible to upload to youtube or any other webpage this short cut animation because of sexual predators who liar to a boy or girl every day using this kind of material. Take care of your children's innocence. Take care of their mind. They are angels. They deserve to be cared every time.
Amazing and so touching! The heart 'knows' and humans should be living their lives and making decisions based on their heart and gut - love and knowing! People need to mind their own business and just let others be! Best movie I've seen all year!

Also i found it awkward when people find homo/trans/bi-sexuality, awesome, so cute or whatever, it is just normal. I hope that i will be still alive to see all the occidental world seeing this like a woman wearing a pair of jeans, little girls going to school and women voting: NORMAL! (sorry for my english btw)
This is the cutest thing ever! Luckily my heart isn't that demanding! But still really cute :)
I haven't even watched it yet, but I'll be sure to! I fully support the LGBT community and I'm pansexual myself ☺ I know it's gotta be good when Thomas Sanders says it is..
It don't matter to me if this are a gay couple, black, straight, or purple etc. Love is love and seeing it play out can ether warm your heart or break it. This video was absolutely adorable and I would love to see a full movie with more open minded, out of the box love stories.
This is actually a really wonderful thing. It's cute and beautiful. Yes it's G rated. And it should be. It says our relationships and loves are as normal as anyone else. I'm a huge animation fan. One of the staples of animation is the hero or heroine trying to find out if the object of their affection shares the same feelings. Why shouldn't gay youth have that as well? In some ways this short film is very Disneyesque and contains many of the same themes. And you know what? I absolutely love that!
i really enjoy these short films, they get you right in the "feels" kudos !!
I'm a big fan of " The Bravest Knight that Ever lived" twist on classic tale.
This is literally the purest thing I've seen this year so far! It's made my day, and i thank whoever created it.
The angst of first love for ANY person is so emotional, and when you add the very real fear of misunderstanding gender clues, it must be so painful! This video reached my old, hetero heart in a beautiful way. We need to remove the stigma and labels and just let people love who they may. I hope this is the first of many such animated marvels! <3 <3
I told myself that I wasn't going to cry, I failed..... it was too beautiful not to
OMG, I love this. Those who don't understand gay people don't get that this sometimes happens - even at a young age! For a gay person it is just as natural to have a crush on a person of the same sex as it is for heteros to be attracted to the opposite sex. Jesus Christ, can't people just be themselves without repercussion?
Most people are, it'd be SUPER COOL if it wasn't something that people have to face every single day of their lives.
Load More Replies...Ok I really loved it BUT the characters looked too young..just saying..They didn't look HS more like grade school.. Just my take on it but it was lovely..
...so? You think that children don't feel attraction toward other children? Or are you sexualizing it because the subject is same-gender attraction, which tends to be defaulted as sexual?
Load More Replies...Well I guess my thoughts are, just like the comment in the beginning if this isnt the cutest thing you've have seen or something like that your wrong, is just so assuming. I kind have had the thoughts since a young person just live and be happy, but I find as I get older even that doesn't satisfy this community. Those who dont feel this way will NEVER totally understand it. We have OTHER feelings, so when someone says we believe we should live and let live with equal rights that should be good enough, but no, I get a thanks for allowing me to live. What do you all want what from the straight community. Its confusing when we see people swear they love the same sex then later marry the opposite sex. So there should be a little understanding both ways. If we say we say live equally that should be enough. Enough is enough ...you arent the only group picked on...
No one is under any obligation to make sense to you to deserve equal rights, just like clearly your comment probably doesn't make sense to a lot of people. As for "being the only group that is picked on", I don't think you realize that "picked on" for the LGBT+ community means "you might get fired, harassed, beaten up and/or killed for who you are". THAT is a LITTLE difficult to get over.
Load More Replies...There's also a really cute movie about a girl having a crush on another girl, it's also on youtube and is called Rock and Riot
Such a beautiful illustration of love! Sorry to see so much lack of empathy, love and compassion in the comments.
Except in real life the boy is straight and our ginger is in for a long time of heartache... But I liked the animation all the same :)
Not all the time, it worked out with my friends, but that is common, which is sad.
Load More Replies...The content is great but I wish we could move past this Pixar look of huge eyes, tiny noses and pouty lips. It embraces an impossible standard of beauty and you'd think such socially conscious creators would care about that.
I agree, but that was just the style of drawing. In this, we learn to not look to the body, but emotions.
Load More Replies...I think this short film is remarkable and inspiring. For the "Christians" out there, take a look at this and think about your short-sighted and unGodly sentiments. https://youtu.be/3CPjWd4MUXs
My bestfriend and I were watching it together when it came out and I was in tears because its so sweet. She was also in tears and wouldn't stop spamming me about it and the same goes for me. It has to be the best short film I've seen. It just makes your heart squeeze and your chest feel tight just by watching it.
If you're asking whether it's a PIXAR production, it's not: it's in the description. If you're suggesting that PIXAR should pick it up, I would cautiously agree.
Load More Replies...What an amazing animation but the ending is confusing. Are they becoming friends or did the kid luck out and crushed on another gay kid? You know, since not everyone is born Bi. Either way this was very well done. Great story and beautiful clever animation.
OMG. I thank you wholeheartedly for this very elaborate and detailed insight on the short film we have both recently watched. I am glad there are so many differing opinions in this comment thread for me to enjoy reading.
Load More Replies...First of all: The title says "Pixar-Like", not "Pixar". Read, before you rant. Nontheless, there's no need to bash Pixar for not doing something like this, since the company isn't focused on JUST love stories. It's about gigantic adventures and personality changes of the characters in it. Love stories are part of their films, but it's usualy not the only aim. However, what makes you think they maybe will never add a gay couple? I mean, there are plenty of Pixar films where characters GET KILLED and it's the 21st century, so perhaps it's more plausible than you might think.
Load More Replies...Not all beliefs are respectable. If you believe some people shouldn't have the same rights as you, then you don't hold a belief worthy of respect. Most likely if you are against same sex marriage then you are probably voting as such too, in which case you aren't even being tolerant. Some beliefs are harmful. Imagine if slave owners just said it was their belief. Belief is not a shield. If you don't agree with same sex marriage then just don't have one. It's not your business what other people do.

Load More Replies...As opposed to forcing heterosexual agenda in 99% of the rest of the media? We get it. You're straight. Get over it.
Load More Replies...That's hilarious. If you say and do bigoted things, you're gonna get called out on it. That's the only things that's changed: you used to be the majority, and people are not tolerating your hate anymore.
Load More Replies...That's actually more like 4% of adults being openly non-straight in the US, emphasis on "openly". Yet you STILL get 99% of the media about you, so how about you just keep to that and let us enjoy things we relate to, hmm? You get uncomfortable when it's not about you?
Load More Replies...Not all women can bear children, nor men produce viable sperm. Homosexuality has been observed time and time again in nature. Marriage? Not so much. You do get lifelong partnerships, but animals don't have a legal system that treats some differently because they're minorities. You don't have to part of a demographic to understand it: you just have to listen and understand that your experience is neither the only one valid, nor does it set the course for truth OR morality. That's an exercise in humanity, I hope you get there someday.
Load More Replies...Yea I bet your religion learns you to hate other people for not being just like you. I bet you are perfect in every way...
Load More Replies...Stop being so unnecessarily "philosophical" about this. The children are not being sexualized in this. Get a grip of yourself, for goodness sakes!
Load More Replies..."God didn't create a man....." Correct, god didn't create a man, or a woman either!
Load More Replies...I am well too close to 50 and my mother loves it! We have no gay people (that I am aware of) in our close family yet she manages to value people for who they are.
Load More Replies...A) not Pixar and B) because why not two boys? They're in love, and this is honestly groundbreaking and adorable both!
Load More Replies...It didn't claim to be intersectional. Are you going to complain every time you don't get an exact representation of yourself? Maybe the creators are gay anglo men and drawing on their experience, not yours.
Load More Replies...Not everyone believes in your religion. And they shouldn't.
Load More Replies...Not everyone believes in sin or your god. You can't hold them to that standard. If you believe in a god that's against gay marriage, then don't be gay yourself. You can't expect everyone to practice your religion.
Load More Replies...I see the story of a shy kid who's got a crush on another boy and feels the need to hide it, while struggling with the urge to let him know how he feels. And when he does, he sees other people's reactions, and the other boy's hesitation because of it, and it breaks his heart to feel judged by his peers and the person he admires. And then the boy goes after him, regardless of what other people's reactions were, and helps mend the broken heart with acceptance both of his affection and of who he is. The fact that the person he likes is another boy is important because of current social pressure to conform to heteronormativity, which is the kind of judging look they get from their peers. Kids at that age are not immune to pressure from society, far from it: they're even more vulnerable. THAT is the time to help them find and love themselves. A story doesn't have to spell out every element to be a story, or to tell a message: you understand it with the context of the world. You missed it.
Load More Replies...Funny how we don't get that kind of comment on animations featuring children of different genders attracted to one another. The only reason you perceive any of that as sexualization - because it really isn't - is because you're associating it with homosexuality, which in your mind is necessarily about sex. It's not. If YOU think those children look anything sexual, I'm worried about how YOU perceive children at large.
Load More Replies...You're f*****g kidding, right? You can't read the description saying it's not even Disney?
Load More Replies...Alright then. Listen to your own advice. Not everyone believes the exact same things that you do. LGBTQ+s are no different than you and me.
Load More Replies...Wow, they didn't say or even imply that. Sounds like you think about that a lot.
Load More Replies...Excuse me? Nothing "turns" anyone into a homosexual, that's the whole point of this short film.
Load More Replies...What's wrong with being gay? I mean really, how does someone's sexual preferences affect you and your life? It's 2017. Stop being a homophobic piece of s**t.
Load More Replies...I like how you have a puppy as your ur profile pic, to cover up the horrible ugliness in your heart. Good job. Clap. Clap.
Load More Replies...A perversion is something that is unnatural. Homosexuality is completely natural. it literally occurs in nature and ALWAYS has.
Load More Replies...If you think gay people need to be cured, you're insinuating that it's a disease, and so that it's wrong. It's not a disease. It's not wrong. It is the way they're supposed to be, and they can be happy if people like you stop telling them otherwise.
Load More Replies...Why? What's your reasoning for this being disgusting? The only thing that is disgusting here is the fact that it's 2017 and you're both homophobic pricks.
Load More Replies...it's not peanut butter, it's not spreading, it was here all along
