JD Vance, 41, and his wife, Usha, 39, had spent years keeping their family life relatively private, aside from occasional public appearances tied to their roles. But that changed in recent months as two separate moments created a narrative they hadn’t expected to see attached to their names.
The first incident came during a Turning Point USA event on October 29, just seven weeks after conservative activist Charlie Kirk lost his life. There, his widow, Erika Kirk, invited JD to the stage while paying tribute to her late husband in a heartfelt speech, according to PEOPLE.

“No one will ever replace my husband,” Erika, 37, told the crowd. “But I do see some similarities of my husband in JD, in Vice President JD Vance. I do. And that’s why I am so blessed to be able to introduce him tonight,” Erika Kirk said.
As JD walked out, the two shared an emotional hug that instantly made the rounds online. Erika placed her hand on the back of the VP’s head while his hands briefly rested at her waist. Screenshots of that moment were reposted and reanalyzed repeatedly by netizens trying to interpret their body language.

Posts questioned whether the hug was appropriate, and numerous critics alleged that the two were having an affair. Body language experts, for their part, noted that the hug was intimate but not necessarily romantic.
The second incident came from something far more mundane. On November 19, while visiting Camp Lejeune in North Carolina alongside Melania Trump, Second Lady Usha Vance was photographed without her wedding ring.

The Second Lady’s missing wedding ring, coupled with the VP’s controversial hug with the Turning Point USA CEO, created a perfect storm for speculation. Some claimed that JD and Usha Vance would eventually announce a divorce, considering the VP’s likely rise as Donald Trump’s successor.

Usha Vance did not personally address the speculations surrounding her marriage to the Vice President, but a spokesperson did explain the reason behind the controversy of her missing ring.
According to the spokesperson, Usha is “a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.”
JD shared similar sentiments during a December 4 interview with NBC News, where he was directly asked about the rumors circulating online. “I think that we kind of get a kick out of it,” he said when referencing headlines about Usha appearing at events without her ring.

“With anything in life, you take the good with the bad,” he added. “You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too. But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha’s really taken to it, and it’s been kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role.”
He also shared the moment when Usha realized she’d forgotten her ring on their way to the White House after taking a shower. “She was like, ‘Oh, if I don’t go back and get them, there’s going to be some ridiculous psycho who talks about it on social media,’” the VP recalled. “And I was like, let them. It’s not even worth the trip to run back upstairs.”

According to JD, they even found the entire cycle amusing. “We actually have a little bit of fun with it,” he told the news outlet. “And we thought that whole viral social media cycle was kind of funny.”
Although JD did not address his viral hug with Erika Kirk during the interview, Erika herself later explained the moment at a Megyn Kelly Live event.
“My love language is touch, if you will,” she said. She then went on to give a moment-by-moment retelling of the incident. “They just played the emotional video. I’m walking over, (JD) is walking over. I’m starting to cry.”

“He says, ‘I’m so proud of you.’ And I say, ‘God bless you,’ and I touch the back of his head,” she continued. “Anyone whom I have hugged, that I have touched the back of your head when I hug you, I always say, ‘God bless you.’”
Kelly responded jokingly, “They were acting like you touched the back of his a**!” to which Erika replied, “I feel like I wouldn’t get as much hate if I did that!”
