Professor Fate.: the real reason seems to have been that both sides wanted to build ICBMs. The US knew it could build nuclear b0mbs *that* big. The USSR feared it wouldn't be able to build nuclear b0mbs any smaller than *this* big. So, they went ahead and designed a rocket big enough to carry the huge b0mbs they suspected they'd have to carry. Turns out their b0mb designers were better than that, and the R-7 rocket designed to carry them wasn't just far too powerful for its intended application, but because it used liquid oxygen and kerosene fuel, it was an awfully impractical ICBM in any case. Thing is, it turned out to be the basis of an absolutely brilliant space launcher family. btw, the US got the best of the German rocket scientists; the USSR did get some, milked them for their knowledge, then threw them out. In contrast, the US integrated its N@zi rocketeers into its space programme. 😁

One of the problems he had to solve was developing a fuel pump capable of the enormous volume of fuel these things required. The solution? A rocket powered fuel pump. Yes, the fuel pump had a small rocket that made it spin very fast.

Ryan F. Mercer: and that basic idea is still in use. For the highest efficiency, you need to run the turbopump exhaust into the main engine, which gets complicated and expensive. For really high reliability and/or long service duration rocket engines, they use pressurised fuel and oxidiser tanks. Satellites, moon landing and take-off, that sort of thing. Less efficient, but sometimes that doesn't matter so much.

Saw it JPL before being launched. Their website had a digital boarding pass website. I created one for my mother who loved space travel and Mars. Last month I talked with one of the engineers and she confirmed that that all the names that created a boarding pass really on a chip on the rover on Mars, my mom, her, me, and my sister. I used to be so happy that this company existed. I was so happy we were going back to space. I could see the rocket launches from where I lived sometimes, when they launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base. I literally cried in joy when they landed the two Falcon Heavy boosters simultaneously in 2019. Now I know so much more about Musk and hate him so deeply, I don't even know how to feel about SpaceX any more. I'm sad that I feel like we've lost the expanses of space again, but this time to a megalomaniacal, egotistical d-bag.

Weird to quote power like that, it's not a unit normally used for jet engines, (Edit: because calculations for power depend on the speed it's travelling, so it's not a fixed value) which are quoted in thrust, rather quaintly still usually using pounds. That one is expected to generate around 100 000 lbs thrust. That's almost double what they could achieve back when I worked for them in the 1980s

There's all this political pressure to require age verification these days, but I find it interesting that after all these years of kids being able to access p**n essentially without restriction, there is no actual social epidemic, just a lot of hyperventilating parents. Truth is, kids only seek out things that are relevant to them. Once they hit puberty, it becomes relevant, because it should. If people believe p**n teaches unhealthy concepts of s****l relationships, then the thing to do is to teach your kids what a healthy relationship is, not cut off their access to information. Provide context. P**n and p**n seeking is perfectly natural and you can't keep them in the dark forever. Again, no social epidemic. We're trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
