Contrary to people, who we can't look inside to figure out "what they're made of," we can break or simply open a number of things around us to learn more about them. And when we do, the results can be surprisingly strange and cool.
From simple everyday household items to highly engineered mechanical marvels, we put together a list of pictures exposing the hidden layers that usually stay out of sight. So if you too are tired of hearing "appearance matters," join us and let's turn inward.

In my youth (mid 1970s) I found one of these that was tightly jammed and non-working. Took it apart, cleaned and reassembled it, and it *almost* worked right. Certain functions I never did get to work, but wow! what a complicated piece of mechanism!
At first glance, I thought it WAS a shoe. "That can't be." Second look..."oh, right. Cool." 🤭

Serious institutions engage in this sort of fun as well. For example, sharing the joy and excitement of "hidden" science was the inspiration for Under the Microscope, an initiative launched in 2023 by the Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre (nmRC) at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.
"Rather than guessing what people might be interested in, we thought why not just metaphorically hand the keys over to the public?" explains Luke Norman, knowledge exchange fellow at the nmRC. "So we've basically just asked the public every single month, what would you like to see imaged by an electron microscope?"

Snapped This Picture Inside Of A Hot Air Balloon While It Was Inflating
If's a fascinating part of the process of launching, take-off, flight, and landing of a balloon. One of my brothers owns a hot air balloon. He competes in balloon races and it's really interesting to see everything it takes. I think the best part is being at the launch site with the launch team. So many teams setting up. Then there's being on the chase crew, where you can communicate with the balloon pilot during the flight about where they're planning to land - preferably an open field with no power lines near it. Next is the chase crew figuring out how to get to the landing via roads. There's really so much to see at these races.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) probes the surface of solid objects by bombarding them with electrons that are then reflected back and collected by a detector.
The technique is similar to light microscopy, but because the wavelength of an electron is much shorter than that of a visible photon, SEM resolves the surface in much greater detail, with the top-performing instruments reaching up to one million times magnification.
At such an extreme close-up, even familiar objects like leaves and sand become extraordinary as their minute and bizarre structural features are brought into focus. “If you know what an object looks like in real life, you absolutely do not know what it looks like at the microscale! There’s a real curiosity from people to see that,” says Norman.

I know it's "only machinery" - but think about the centuries of scientific and engineering research and development by untold tens of thousands of people it took to allow the creation of that masterpiece of engineering art, only for it to be sliced up like that...
Well, they're probably not doing it just for giggles. I do see where you're coming from, but a quick look at some of the comments on the original posts suggests that slicing it in half would have been a feat of engineering in its own right. I can only speculate as to the motives of the person who bisected this lens but presumably they didn't do it because they're fine throwing away thousands of dollars or because they're just curious. Maybe this one was defective, or had been always intended to be disassembled thus for demonstration purposes? Not sure any of that was helpful, sorry!

Since its start in March 2023, Under the Microscope has analyzed more than 30 ordinary objects ranging from lizard scales to gluten-free bread, and even a 14th-century manuscript complete with a dust mite.
The public is invited to suggest any solid object (provided it's obtainable), and each month, Norman's team selects one, posting the images online for everyone to enjoy.
Norman says the “Oh wow!” and “That’s really weird!” responses are exactly the kind of excitement he’d hoped to generate around electron microscopy and the work at the nmRC.

Approximately 9.4 million people were employed in jobs related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in the UK.

So initiatives like Under the Microscope help spark the much needed interest and awareness.

A TISP survey, conducted across 68 countries with almost 72,000 respondents, found that a large majority perceive scientists positively: 78% say scientists are qualified, 57% say they are honest, and 56% believe they care about people's well‑being.
While 83% of participants think scientists should actively communicate with the public, only 42% feel that scientists pay enough attention to the views of ordinary people.
However, this seems less about scientists not trying and more about how much is happening behind the scenes. If we could follow along and see what they’re doing and analyzing, we would probably care much more about their work.
Tank Cut In Half
StrangeOne: they make military tanks as small as practical, so as to present the smallest practical target. The reason they're big is that they're big complicated machines - the space inside is just big enough for the required stores and the crew to work inside them. British armoured vehicles all have a kettle, though (officially a "boiling vessel" - means you can have a cup of tea and hot food without having to get out).

Gareth: it's a German Leopard tank 1 - designed with much lighter armour than you'd expect. The Leopard 2 has better protection. From Wikipedia: "Mobility had priority, while firepower came second. Armour was seen as less essential, as it was believed that no real protection against hollow charge weapons was possible anyway. At the time it was suspected that future conflicts would involve nuclear weapons, which no tank at the time could directly protect from"

Looks creepy as hell. I hope my optometrist keeps that s**t to herself. You tell me if there's something wrong, I don't need to see that.
Much more interesting than the photo of mine from 1999 or so. It was pretty cool at the time but all you could see was the red retina, the veins going through it, and the dark spot where I had a hole in the retina. In 2014 when I had more issues, the scan was so different! They scan (I can't remember specific name) the eye at all different directions and then when it's on the computer, you could scroll all around the image, very close up, so you can see all the different sections around the retina. In my place you could see the big bubble of brain fluid that was encapsulated when I was young, compared to the smaller section after it was drained.

Rather Than Build A New Cruise Ship, Silversea Has Decided To Cut Their Current Ship In Half With “Military Precision” And Add Another 50 Feet Of Space Right In The Middle Of The Vessel
Actually, not a lot. Unlike automobile "cut and shut" jobs there's no reason that the resulting structural integrity will be any less than if it were built that way in the first place. (I briefly studied Naval Architecture when I was a Merchant Navy cadet). I was more wondering _why_ they would do it, seems like it was less about increasing the overall capacity but more to create 34 "luxury suites" which I imagine would be much more difficult to retro-engineer into the existing structure. Search "silver spirit lengthening" for more details.

Inside Skylab In January Of 1974
Skylab was designed in the 60's but it has several advantages over the ISS. It had more interior room AND it was equipped with a shower.
Skylab was a re-purposed Saturn V 3rd stage (S-IVB). Basically a re-worked fuel tank. It was intended to have stayed in orbit longer, but since the plan involved having its orbit boosted by the Space Shuttle which was late into service, that didn't work. Almost everything about the ISS is better, because the ISS designers had the benefit of decades of space station operation to guide them. The US won the race to the moon, yes; but the USSR kept continuous human operations going in orbit...

Well, no. They often use the same butane tank, but the spark mechanism is different. Usually piezoelectric, but whatever it is, it has to be near where the fire comes out. But also, what did you expect? It's a lighter that moves the flame away from your hand and little else.

Steel Core Inside Of A "Rubber" Bullet Used By Police
Yeah, "just" rubber bullets is not like getting hit with soft cushions. I once saw footage on an American TV show where a crew follows cops around, in which a hardened gang member is on the ground literally sobbing in pain because he copped one in the leg (with dubbed-in nursery music and the host mocking the guy and calling him a little baby. It was one of the crassest things I've ever seen).
UK issue "rubber bullets" aren't like that at all. They're derived from wooden "baton rounds" used by some British Imperial police forces in the Far East - originally, basically sawn off bits of broom handle. They evolved into actual big fat rubber bullets fired from converted flare guns, and then into plastic cylinders also fired from converted flare guns, into a modern composite thingy with a crushable alumimium alloy nose cone fired from a special weapon that's a bit like a flare gun. They're all fat and low velocity and you do *NOT* want to get hit by one - you *WILL* go down, and you *WILL* suffer serious internal bruising and/or broken bones. They're "less lethal" projectiles, yes - but they have kílled far too many people, mostly Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland, many of them children.
