Houses Stand Empty
... the fact that we haven't succeeded yet in adressing these issues tells me one thing - the means chosen aren't sufficient. In order to solve this, and stay within the law, we'd need a lot of things being formalized that currently aren't in any way that would make a difference. If housing is unaffordable, rent is increasing faster than everything else, the market is out of balance. We need to set up criteria to actually conclude this, and to identify those that play the most crucial role in keeping it so, and we need to introduce a law that obligates them to act towards a balanced market - build more homes, and not of the luxury sort, but below a certain rent and so forth ... and a lot more, I can't write this down completely, nor have I eaten wisdom by the shovel.
Historical Building Mysteriously Burns Down
The planned redevelopment failed as the local Council issued an enforcement notice requiring the owners to completely rebuild the pub brick by brick to its pre-fire condition. The dodgy developers are fighting it through the courts, but they're long past making a profit
Rent prices these days can make finding a place you actually like feel like a small victory, until you see the price tag. You start picturing where the couch will go, then look at the rent and remember your bank account has other plans.
Sadly, for many renters, that monthly payment takes up a serious chunk of their income. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, renters spent a median of 31% of their income on housing costs in 2023.

Where Would They Get The Money From?
I moved into a filthy apartment and had to hire a professional cleaner to come in at my expense. I found dirty socks behind furniture. When I moved out we scrubbed the place spotless and my landlord tried to claim our damage despot for cleaning (and some damage I had photos of on upon moving in). I ended up paying half and am still so bitter. I wish I had gone to small claims court.
Aside from the outrageous cost of rent, application fees, deposits, utilities, parking, and other expenses can push the final bill even higher. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has been looking to curb unfair rental housing fee practices, including cases where extra costs were not included in the advertised rent.
For many tenants, learning about those extra expenses might feel like another financial headache when they can already barely afford the rent.
It Makes Sense If You Don’t Really Think About It
What The Actual...
Priceless
Many landlords seem to believe that collecting your rent also gives them unlimited power over you. Thankfully, this is not the case. In the U.S., renters have legal protections covering things like housing conditions, access to the property, security deposits, and eviction procedures, although the exact rules vary by state.
These protections help ensure renting a home doesn't mean giving up all your rights. Some of the landlords in this collection, though, seem to have missed that memo.

Landlordism Explained
Landlords provide housing about as much as scalpers provide concert tickets
The Villain We Don’t Need
Even though every state requires landlords to provide safe and livable housing, some landlords are perfectly comfortable leaving tenants with problems that should have been fixed long ago.
If a landlord refuses to address a serious problem, tenants may have legal options, such as requesting repairs, reporting the issue, or, in some states, withholding rent or deducting certain repair costs. The important part is following the rules for your state rather than deciding to stop paying rent on your own

When Satire Really Just Predicts A Possible Future
In all this housing drama, it is worth nothing that paying rent doesn't mean giving up your privacy. Landlords cannot just show up and let themselves in whenever they feel like it.
By law, tenants have the right to enjoy their home without unnecessary interruptions, except in emergencies, inspections, or repairs.

This is going to happen in most places hopefully sooner rather than later. Rents are getting outrageous and have been for years
A lot of renters still run into discrimination when looking for a home, whether it is because of their race, gender, religion, disability, or family situation. The Fair Housing Act is supposed to protect people from this kind of treatment and makes housing discrimination illegal.
But having those protections in place does not mean everyone gets treated fairly, which is why HUD continues to investigate discrimination complaints from renters.

All I See In Ads For Rentals
People have lost a lot of money to fake rental listings, pressure to pay a deposit before seeing a property, and payment methods that are difficult to reverse. The FTC says consumers have reported about $65 million in losses to rental scams since 2020.
So before sending money for that dream apartment, it is worth checking that the listing and the person behind it are legitimate. Otherwise, your perfect new home could turn out to be an expensive, tantalizing internet hallucination.
"Landlords Need Us, We Don't Need Landlords" Poster Spotted In Aberystwyth, Wales, UK
That’s actually not true. I had 30k saved 4 years ago if I purchased a home it would have needed 15k in repairs and my mortgage would have been 100s more than my rent. I also would have no funds left over for furniture and more. So society does need land lords, However it should be federally regulated some how. Where I live they are putting loads of affordable housing apartments everywhere and guess what? Most people can’t afford 1st, last and security. The upper class is trying to slowly bankrupt the middle to lower class, so they can extort us even more, through our desperation. It is disgraceful.

My Mom Is Triggered Because She's A Landlord Now
No, i think this is a fair point by the mom. OP has likely made some seriously harsh comments about how all Landlords are automatically scum, and OP's mom is basically saying "welp, guess that's me now too."
Dealing with a landlord from hell might have you thinking you should buy your own place. Unfortunately, buying a home can feel out of reach when you have to worry about a down payment, mortgage, insurance, taxes, and other costs that come with ownership.
In 2024, the median monthly cost for U.S. homeowners with a mortgage was $2,035, according to the Census Bureau. So for many people, renting may still be the more manageable option, even if it occasionally means putting up with a landlord who makes you question your life choices.

People who are lucky enough to have a good landlord may not realize what a rare gem that is. From experience, a difficult one can turn your home into a constant source of stress.

I had a landlord decide to sell and his realtor would just send people over with a half hour notice at best. Had a realtor pound on my door at almost 10 one night with some clients and I sent her packing while she yelled at my house from the porch. Took them to court for harassment and breaking the 24 hour law...lost. Googled the judge after and found out she was...a landlady.

Landlord Boxed My Car In With Snow
I get this regularly in the winter, my own parking is right next to the public road which will be ploughed after each heavy fall, they let it pile up on any cars parked (on my own property). It's what they do, nothing I can do about it unless I were to remove the vehicles and pay them to plough my parking area as well. But it's fine, I'll need to get my own snow-blower out to clear the pathways anyway. Ah, the pleasures of living in a mountain ski village.

One could also argue that's a lot of storage space for nonessential everyday stuff. But that basement could also very well be haunted.
To everyone who's read my comments in this thread - PLEASE believe me that I'm generally a very chill and loving girl and I only have this amount of hatred and vitriol saved for greedy capitalist hogs 😅
Any very chill and loving person should have a considerable amount of hatred and vitriol saved for greedy capitalist hogs.
Load More Replies...i know its pretty cool right now to hate anything capitalism and seeing the current economy, I understand the sentiment. However, some people dont realize that landlords have their own expenses no tenant needs to pay like property tax, insurance and maintenance and repairs. If you want to hate capitalism, at least check how much of your rent is going to the government. In some areas in California by example, property tax can contribute up to 70% of rent. So maybe put some of your anger into the right direction.
A lot of people who visit this site are kids who have never lived in the real world. They don't realise the expense of owning your own home which I'm just finding out after 20 years of renting. I haven't had to pay out for the roof to be redone, the boiler to be replaced three times, carpets, bathroom, new kitchen, insurance. Landlords have a place, unscrupulous ones who don't look after their properties do not.
Load More Replies...Not sure where I stand on the rent increases, need more information about inflation and market rates, I'm assuming they're all in the US so I have no idea if they're typical or over what time period. Here in CH i keep thinking I might up the rent on the one long-term tenant I have, haven't changed it in the 8 years I;ve been here even once I realised that the 1250 a month she pays is actually not what's in her contract, which is 1500. But she's a nice lady (with 2 daughters, one now at college) and has helped me out on a number of occasions, so...
