... the fact that we haven't succeeded yet in adressing these issues tells me one thing - the means chosen aren't sufficient. In order to solve this, and stay within the law, we'd need a lot of things being formalized that currently aren't in any way that would make a difference. If housing is unaffordable, rent is increasing faster than everything else, the market is out of balance. We need to set up criteria to actually conclude this, and to identify those that play the most crucial role in keeping it so, and we need to introduce a law that obligates them to act towards a balanced market - build more homes, and not of the luxury sort, but below a certain rent and so forth ... and a lot more, I can't write this down completely, nor have I eaten wisdom by the shovel.

Just did the math for my locale. If you want to live alone in a one br apt, you'd need to make around $35 an hour and definitely 40hrs/wk.

I moved into a filthy apartment and had to hire a professional cleaner to come in at my expense. I found dirty socks behind furniture. When I moved out we scrubbed the place spotless and my landlord tried to claim our damage despot for cleaning (and some damage I had photos of on upon moving in). I ended up paying half and am still so bitter. I wish I had gone to small claims court.

Interesting that even on years that the mortgage rates went down my rent went up. Renters subsidize the wealthy. I don't get why people celebrate this as success. You were born wealthy and can afford to have others pay you? Wow- great "industry."

Also history of responding to repair requests, and how often they return security deposits, etc.

That’s actually not true. I had 30k saved 4 years ago if I purchased a home it would have needed 15k in repairs and my mortgage would have been 100s more than my rent. I also would have no funds left over for furniture and more. So society does need land lords, However it should be federally regulated some how. Where I live they are putting loads of affordable housing apartments everywhere and guess what? Most people can’t afford 1st, last and security. The upper class is trying to slowly bankrupt the middle to lower class, so they can extort us even more, through our desperation. It is disgraceful.

I hope the gender requirement was because the other tenants are women but I suspect it's because the space is too short for anyone much over 5 feet

No, i think this is a fair point by the mom. OP has likely made some seriously harsh comments about how all Landlords are automatically scum, and OP's mom is basically saying "welp, guess that's me now too."

Generally they are far better than corporate landlords who have investors and shareholders. I always rented from small-time landlords when I was young.

Contact Animal control and health department. Get tenants together to issue landlord a letter that you will be hiring an exterminator if he doesn't deal with the problem and that you will be deducting the fee from the rent. But make sure you do pay a % of the rent.

I had a landlord decide to sell and his realtor would just send people over with a half hour notice at best. Had a realtor pound on my door at almost 10 one night with some clients and I sent her packing while she yelled at my house from the porch. Took them to court for harassment and breaking the 24 hour law...lost. Googled the judge after and found out she was...a landlady.

I know which I would choose, but I think a lot of people got caught up in the Air Fryer evangelism of the last few years and thought they would do everything. They do not, of course. I have one now but it's used in addition to the oven, the microwave and the toaster, not as a substitute for any of them
