There’s no denying that 2020 has been a tough year. In a life full of instant gratification, round-the-clock connectivity and most of our wishes granted at the click of a button, this pandemic was a slap-in-the-face reality that shook the world. We were living in a bubble of comfort. We were under the impression that we were in control. But, we were confronted with reality when COVID-19 officially became a global pandemic. Faced with the true vulnerability of human existence, our lives were disrupted by fear, anxiety and uncertainty.

Billions of people were in lockdown and there was a point when life as we know it came to a standstill. Isolation was hard on us all. However, we were grateful for the internet. We still had the World Wide Web at our fingertips and that seemed like a good distraction when we couldn’t take facing real life anymore.

Social media was flooded with people documenting #quarantinelife. We saw videos, songs, artworks, memes….so many memes! And all this was great fodder for boredom in the first few weeks…But there’s only so many pictures you can take of your house and your endless tea drinking and whiling away time.

I know I mustn’t be the only one to have been forced to re-examine my life. Existential questions like ‘What am I doing with my life?’, ‘What will I do differently if I survive this?’, ‘What is my purpose?’, ‘What makes me truly happy?’, etc. would bother me constantly. The pandemic seems to be the singular most unprecedented event of my 30 something years on this planet.

A few months into quarantine, I began working on a project close to my heart. I came up with prompts that would make dealing with quarantine life fun and light-hearted, considering the heaviness of the situation. These helped navigate the confusion and disruption caused by the pandemic. It was a gradual journey of self-discovery through introspection, creativity and gratitude.

This project turned into a 130-page book – ‘Me Time: My Quarantine Journal’, available on Amazon worldwide. An illustrated book that urges readers to write a letter to Earth (when was the last time you wrote a letter? Let alone one to our planet); concoct, draw and note down favorite quarantine recipes, design our own masks – a mandatory accessory to our attire; evoke the artist in us, practice daily affirmations and so much more.

This is the book I wish I had over those months spent alone with boredom and anxiety as my only companions.

As the book progresses, it enables the reader to dive deeper with exercises that emphasize action planning with a focus on solutions. It makes for a perfect keepsake as a documentation of quarantine life, as well as a journal to navigate the world’s “new normal”.

Prompts that make us think about who we really are and what we want will be an asset as we fearlessly head into 2021, having taken a step towards trying to figure out what the pandemic means for us as individuals and how to make sense of it in our own way, even post that much awaited immunization shot.
