Entitled People Destroy Homeless Person’s Shelter, Gets Them Trapped For An Hour

Life can be unpredictable, no matter how much you try to plan it. Sometimes, things just happen, and there’s nothing else to do except to deal with in any way you can think of. For some, homelessness is one of these things. Sadly, people who become homeless for any reason (and there are plenty of those) tend to be horribly mistreated.

One of the best examples of this is today’s story. A homeless person’s shelter was destroyed by some random people for no apparent reason, and this resulted in the person being trapped for an hour.

More info: Reddit

Some people are just cruel without any proper reason

The homeless person was living in their makeshift shelter in the woods, but one day, random entitled people came and destroyed the shelter with the person in it

It took a whole hour for the person to get out of the shelter, which prompted them to come online to vent and wonder why someone would do that

The OP is a homeless person who lives in the woods in their makeshift shelter. One day, they heard some rustling outside their shelter, which was caused by the tarp being moved around.

The person shouted to ask who it was, what they wanted, and why they were there. And the answer to that was simple — they didn’t have anywhere to go. After that, the people outside pulled the wood that kept the upper tarp over the shelter, which caused it to collapse with the person inside it.

As these people were walking away, they let the person know that they did it as a “lesson.” It took an hour for the OP to move everything around and get out of the trap. This incident prompted them to go online to vent about how entitled some people are to destroy someone else’s shelter instead of letting them be.

At least people online were way more empathetic than those who destroyed the shelter. Some were not only empathetic but angry as well. They cursed these destroyers for acting the way they did. After all, making it worse for the person, who already doesn’t live in good conditions, is just a jerk-ish move.

It’s not entirely clear why the OP ended up living in their DIY shelter, as they didn’t specify that in their post. Well, there are plenty of various reasons why people end up homeless. It can range from unfortunate life events to unaffordable housing, unemployment, and poverty. It’s quite common for domestic violence victims to run away from their situations and become homeless in the process.

Being homeless comes with not only having a proper roof over your head but with other kinds of problems, too. For example, violence against them. More than 1 in 3 homeless people have experienced some kind of violence and have had things thrown at them. And that’s not the end of it — many homeless people experience other kinds of disrespect towards them. Like being urinated on, being sexually assaulted, and so on.

So, with this in mind, people should strive not to make it even harder for the homeless people but to help them. For instance, donating or volunteering at shelters can make a difference. Or if a person doesn’t have money or time to do that, simple kindness can also work. Acknowledging that homeless people are still people can be very meaningful to them. Simple eye contact, a smile, or even a brief conversation can brighten a person’s day and doesn’t cost that much money or time. Just don’t be a jerk, that’s all.

People online showed the person much-needed empathy and cursed the jerks who destroyed the shelter

"Yet you can afford a cell phone plan with data?" Yes...because a cell phone plan costs far less than an apartment!

Not only that but the government in the US offers several FREE phone programs for people who can’t afford phones. When I saw that dickless 🫏🕳️ with his “Yet you can afford a phone?” I swear I wanted to hunt him down and punch him in the throat. “If you’re homeless, you can’t have a phone! You need the money you’re spending on that phone to BUY A HOUSE, loser!” Grrr. I hate people with no empathy for anyone. They’re gross and they make me barf.

I've occasionally seen tents in wooded urban areas. If I've accidentally walked close and someone's there, I excuse myself as if I had stepped on someone's front lawn. Partly out of respect and partly to avoid confrontation. No need to be predatory and destroy what little someone has, including shelter. What if I lost everything and had no other means to survive?

Exactly this. I walk a lot of trails and have seen shelters in the woods. I go by quietly. Sometimes I leave something they can use if I have it.

The homelessness problem has been getting worse; and will keep getting worse. It's a problem "Western Civilization" has never had a clue how to handle - send in cops, push them someplace else - nothing changes. The homeless are dying now in greater numbers; in the heat in the summer, in the cold in the winter. You know who has always helped the homeless the most? The poor. The people with almost nothing - will share it. The rich- you know damn well what the rich do. Hey, ELON!! YOU SAY the world has plenty of room? How about show us where- you've got the money, and apparently, on alternate St. Swithin's Days - the brains. Other than that? I got nothing.

Asses like Musk do not care about anything past their own nose. Bezos is the same. Heaven forbid they do anything that doesn't bring in money to their account, even though they have enough for a million lifetimes.

public parks should be used by homeless people. the shelters are always full- where else are they supposed to go?? i understand people being upset by a mess, or drugs, or drinking, but there's literally nothing else they can do, and some people are jerks whether they're homeless or not. hell, the housed public probably leaves just as much mess behind when they are done at the park!

"According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, it would cost $20 billion to end homelessness in the United States" (from globalgiving.org). There are people who have more than that much money, yet who refrain from ending homelessness. It's not like most of us who literally can't solve the problem -- these are people who could but who choose not to. The small-time jerks like the people in this article are just emulating wealthy people by choosing selfishness over compassion.

There is a state in the US (I forget which) that solved the problem much, MUCH more reasonably by providing apartments for the homeless. That gave them not only somewhere to live, but it also cut down massively in their illnesses, gave them chances to work, allowed them to feel some sort of pride and hope, and lots more good things. I don’t believe the $20 billion figure, but I’ll go look to see what it says. (By the way, the preventing illnesses and emergency room visits saves HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, so housing them is the economically smart move.)

And it's only getting worse. In 2020 roughly 40% of homeless people had jobs, at the end of 2023 it was 53%. That number is only increasing. Most homeless people aren't addicts either. Only about 35% have an addiction issue. Until we get the housing situation under control, and reign in greedy property owners, it's only going to get worse.

How bout some dignity and a little less judgement about someone's situation. Even if a person chooses to be homeless I am not entitled to an explanation. As long as there's no harm to themselves or others I see no reason to treat them differently. God forbid they have basis freaking necessities and a cellphone is a now kind of a basic need especially for someone who has no fixed housing situation it's a matter of safety.
