When we first moved into our house the previous owner had half of the basement set up for his. One room had a huge squared U set up with a green felt top. There was storage under it but we were kids so we went under and crawled around and hung out in there like a clubhouse.

Uranium is a weak alpha emitter. The alpha it throws off can't escape the glass. It goes due to the ultraviolet lights he has on it.

Erm I thought water based heating in concrete floors was normal? In Denmark most people install when renovating older houses and all newer houses have it. It actually let's you maintain a lower overall temperature because it doesn't feel cold if your feet are warm. Thus saving money on heating. The pipes are pex plastics with a 50 Year guaranteed lifespan.

Not that common in Australia. Some people have ducted (air) heating, but most use electric heaters in each room (especially in rentals) or reverse-cycle air conditioners). Most Australian homes in the past were built on stumps, rather than slabs.

This was taken just before we moved out. The people who bought the place said they would keep this and fix it up, but when I drove past a few months ago everything was gone. If it wasn't made of concrete I think mum would have tried to take it with her, she salvaged a lot of stuff including the ornate front door gate, which she put into her new place.

We have a set of racist dental tools marked "White Surgery" and "Colored Surgery" that my mom found when she worked at the University of Tennessee. She didn't want her children whitewashed so she hung them up to say LOOK WHAT HAPPENED. People obviously often assume it is a racist statement but it is the opposite. Nobody would ever be able to convince her white, privilege happy kids that horrible racism was not the norm and in many ways still is. We weren't ALLOWED to not be anti-racist. That seemed like a triple negative. No racism allowed was her statement. Because look how disgusting it really feels when you mount it on the wall.
