I love that phrase, “collect hobbies”. Can I use that?

Hubby used to say I collected scrapbooking supplies and general crafting supplies more than actually using them 😅 I do use them more often now than 10 years ago

Sounds like me:ADHD! I start something, go to the next thing. Or collect stuff to start a hobby and never do. Art. Gardening. Learning a language. Crafts. Building birdhouses. Hiking. STOP girl! đŸ˜©

Why stop? You maybe never become a pro in any of your hobbies, but this is why "collecting" is the better term: becoming proficient is not the goal of a hobby. It is a nice side feature, but if you do not, you still enjoyed your time and relaxed while trying new things, didn't you? Don't put pressure on yourself in your free time. Plus, having a broad spectrum of insights helps far better to see day to day problems with new perspectives. Life is colorful, why shouldn't our hobbies be that as well?

I was diagnosed with Lupus in early 2017 (after years of one horrible health issue after another). I was 54 at the time & it hit me hard. My mother suggested I find a hobby to take my mind off of it. At the time, I was a business office manager for a skilled nursing facility (had been for almost 17 years at that point) & my job was extremely demanding. A new healthcare company had recently bought the facility & everything was to be done the corporate way. No problem. One day I was in Hobby Lobby & found myself in the bead aisle. I bought about $300 worth of supplies & a book on how to make jewelry. In January of 2018 I ended up in the hospital with an extremely horrendous infection. 3 months later I was let go from my job (I had used 12 weeks of short term disability) & had to apply for Social Security Disability. If I was depressed before, I was even more so now. Fast forward to today: I've become quite the jewelry maker & sell what I make

I paint canvas sneakers for other people. Mostly Converse Chucks, but I'm hoping to branch out soon! I've done butterflies, dinosaurs, abstract art, flames. Right now I am doing mountains on my own baby-blue Converse.

I like to forage for medicinal and edible plants. I dentify plants I find and research their uses. I make tea, oils, tinctures, etc. It's really interesting and relaxing making my own teas, oils, tinctures, etc. Of course I have to be careful, but there are way more useful plants, even just in my back yard then I would've thought before.

I enjoy this too! We have a little shop nearby, and the owner hosts "weed walks", showing people how to forage and identify plants. I harvest dandelion from our yard, as well as plantain.

You definitely have to be careful! For example you can harvest wild carrot, totally edible, but it also looks like Hemlock which is poisonous. Takes a little time.

Art. I mostly draw, but I love discovering new ways to make art. One of my favorite things is using art supplies "incorrectly." Not tha you can do art wrong, just using things for stuff other than its intended purpose. In case you needed to know, eyeshadow is pretty decent paint pigment, and nailpolish is not. Nailpolish will turn your paint into unusable gluey slime.

I use brown eye shadows to "distress" some craft items, particularly wooden crafts, signs and farmhouse things.. Cheaper than ink and easier to use

Thanks! I made this pretty cool paint last week from white acrylic paint, ink from several markers, eyeshadow, and really, really old red nail polish! It was hard to paint with and ruined my brush, but it somehow both dried solidly like acrylic paint, and also soaked into the paper and spread like watercolors! Super cool effect!

I love doing origami and I know you're not gonna believe what I'm gonna say but for example, I've created a Tyrannosaurus Rex by Issei Yoshino, it took me about 2-3 months to create with a week break (u can look it up on google).

“Not as important?” What makes a hobby important? As long as it makes you happy, it’s doing its job.

I crochet toy octopuses/octopodes for prematurely born babies. The tentacles remembers them of the umbilical cord and they often hold on to them for comfort, which also keeps them from pulling the medical tubes. I also knit tiny hats, gloves and socks for premies as well as blankets. It's very rewarding and helps me coping with depression and anxiety.

I like to write so I took an online course in calligraphy which led me to book binding. Because books need a cover and that I live near a tannery where my resources are readily available, I taught myself how to craft leather products. Turns out I'm quite talented and can make good money making leather products. I enjoy the craft as well, finding it therapeutic. I do everything by hand. I'm considering opening a workshop with a storefront.

I write backstories for DnD characters as a side hustle. It began as a hobby, almost like flash fiction, creating character concepts but my husband thought I should monetize it. Now I do fiverr commissions. While quite niche, it is helping me improve my writing skills and forcing me to be incredibly creative and continually come up with new concepts on practically no notice :) . Recently this opened into writing character and story elements for boardgames.

I show and train dogs. I have done this since I was very very young. I was the top obedience junior handler in Canada for multiple years. I traveled all over N. Am competing and for the first two years I was undefeated. I used to go on TV to discuss the sport, training and advocate against Breed Specific Legislation (often bringing my rottweilers with me). I stopped for many years quite abruptly. I recently came back and judges did a double take lol. While I don't show for money anymore, I am slowly dipping my toes back in and doing it fully as a hobby.

I make Reborn Dolls. They start as vinyl head, arms and legs that I spend lots of time hand painting in minute detail to give them tiny blue veins, rosy mottled skin tones, blushed knees and elbows and minuscule fingernail tips and moons. Then I grab a felting needle and hand insert strands of mohair which is just as fine and soft as baby hair. After a few eyelashes are needled in, glass eyes get fitted. The soft fabric body is weighted with stockings full of glass beads and filled with pillow stuffing. A magnet is attached behind the lips before the head is weighted and stuffed. Legs, arms and head are attached and the baby is “born”. After diapering and dressing in real baby clothes, a pacifier with the nipple removed and a magnet added can be put in place for a very realistic visual. I love making these babies and giving or selling them to adoring mommies. My greatest compliments come when I am out with one of my newborns and someone asked me how old the baby is or what it’s name is. It’s so satisfying when someone has to look twice to realize I’m actually holding a doll.

The park system near me does guided walks with staff naturalists. They are on topics that fit the season, things like fungi, wildflowers, geological formations etc. I try to do at least one or two a month. I’ve learned so much and have a much deeper appreciation for the natural world.

For me, it's art. More specifically, creating sketchbooks. I learned how to make them in 9th grade with the art teacher, my mom, and 3 other students. It was awesome. With the covers, we would take either mix media or watercolor paper and dip them into water that has a layer of multiple colors of spray paint. My profile picture is of one of four I did in 9th grade.
