Angry Mom Accidentally Texts 35-Year-Old Guy Instead Of Her Daughter, And Things Escalate Quickly

A 35-year-old man from Wisconsin was enjoying his day off from work recently when a text suddenly appeared in his inbox. “Hunny please grab milk and lunch meet on your way home,” read the message. Given that the man, who goes by the name of velakskin, was already at home, and given that he didn’t recognize the number, he figured that the sender had obviously contacted the wrong person. Despite repeatedly trying to convince them of this however, the sender refused to believe that they weren’t talking to Jess, their own 18-year-old daughter. And as you can see below, things escalated pretty quickly…

Let's use some of our own intelligence, and think critically about the story, shall we? 1. Mom keys in her daughter's number and is immediately told that she got it wrong. 99.9% of people would check the number at the top of the conversation, realize the mistake, and move on. 2. Mom is given pictures of the other person and told multiple times the number is wrong. This is where the other 0.1% would stop and check for a mistake. 3. Hard to believe Mom doesn't have her daughter's number already in contacts, but even if not, she should have previous messages from her daughter. If she even checked her other conversations, she would immediately realize the mistake. 4. Instead of taking 3 seconds to check, Mom (over a period of two hours) does the following: Accuses her daughter of using drugs (again!), reminds her daughter of her own birth date, cancels her daughter's credit card, and calls her friend's mom to find out what's going on. During all of this, she can't check the number?

While I admit that there's a strong possibility that this is staged or otherwise faked, I know people that would react similarly to this. It's a combination of narcissism and just plain being an a*****e with a short fuse. The narcissism makes them think that they do no wrong, not even dial a wrong number, and it makes them think that almost everyone in the world is out to get them somehow. In my experience this goes 10-fold for those closest to them. They'll accuse their spouse and/or children of maliciously trying to make them look bad or of trying to insult them. Often it's over little, innocent mistakes or even over small talk. Not having her daughter's number saved is weird, and I'll agree that that alone does tip the scales toward it being staged, but make no mistake' there are people in the world that act and react exactly like this.

My mom doesn't save contacts in her phone and it drives me crazy!!! Not only that, I'm guessing that Joel has not had any close relationships with people experiencing mental or emotional disorders (more extreme than depression and/or anxiety). There are a lot of people out there who would find it very reasonable to think and respond the way this mom does in these text messages. Whether it's a result of being abused/manipulated in their past or maybe some type of personality disorder. Either way, it was entertaining. I don't understand why you're getting so worked up about it...

Annie Martin: I did consider this. There certainly are people who won't believe they are capable of making a mistake, even when confronted with strong evidence to the contrary. Things that make it less plausible: Mom doesn't have her daughter in contacts. Mom thinks people in the photo are Brad's family, but upon calling Brad's mom, doesn't figure it out. When it seems she is finally starting to question the situation, instead of just calling her daughter directly, she drives home from work in the middle of the day. An hour earlier, Dad was supposed to have been home for lunch, so she also could have called Dad to see what was going on. This behavior doesn't make sense for an actual person, but it makes perfect sense in the context of a fictional piece--she can't call her daughter or her husband, because that would remove the central conflict and ruin the story. Additionally, interactions seem contrived: (But you love ham! But you were 11 years old! Are you on drugs again? Etc.)

It is a completely unbelievable story. She carries on for two hours doing everything in the world except taking three seconds to look at the number at the top of her screen. After all of her completely bizarre behavior toward a completely understanding party on the other end of the line--when she is finally confronted with the mistake--what does she do? Why, she suddenly starts swearing like some kind of coked-up hooker who just got stiffed, punched in the tits, and told to walk home. This isn't a Mom who is stupid or unreasonable, no. This is a Mom who acts like some kind of weird, angry robot, who can only send text messages, and who can't check a phone number or receive a call to confirm who she is speaking to. In short, this is not the behavior of an actual person. It is a contrived character. She was designed to make you angry at her, to make you want to share this story on your wall. Why? Because then boredpanda.com gets more visits and more ad revenue.

Such an interesting group of comments which I believe boil down to 1) This is unbelievable. No one is THAT obtuse and this smacks of a staged conversation designed as click-bait, or, 2) Regrettably, and as hard to believe as it may seem to people who are awake and aware, there are people like this and this conversation is genuine. I'm most decidedly in the latter camp. I would have been more reluctant to put myself in that camp because, until late, I tended to believe most people were far more aware. A recent news report, which is emblematic of so many similar ones, provides a way to share why I reassessed things on that count. A couple of days, at a "campaign (read make money) event, Donald Trump bragged about the huge crowd that had shown up any the auditorium. And there were insanely long lines of people waiting to get inside. Photos from other in attendance showed many empty seats. And yet, the very people in the auditorium chose to believe trump, not their eyes.

While I agree with you, there is a slight, very slight possibility that the mother's been played before by this particular child. the mom could be under a lot of stress and didn't think about what you mentioned, about checking to see if it was her daughter. if so, then perhaps the kid needs to not do anything like this for awhile, and the mother needs to learn what to do to lessen that stress. at any rate, glad this guy has a sense of humor, some wouldn't have taken to joking with her.

Not all witches are good. There are indeed some nasty and f****d up ones. Many are amazing people. (But I can't stand Satanists, either, who say AAAALLL Satanists are good and don't even believe in a "Satan". Well, guess what? Some Satanists do; & sacrifice and eat children, etc.).. I would have pretended to be Jess and had much more fun than this guy. And at the end I would ask which store to come to. Then I would take the stuff and when she gets there and sees me, I would say "hey! You're not my mom" and pretend to be another girl named Jess 😉 But this lady seems to be too rude to play around with. I hate it when people are this rude to me

The reason this guy is so patient is because he was sitting at home in bed for 4 hours doing THIS, while his wife was taking care of the kids and doing the grocery shopping and cleaning the house.... Oh, he did get up to make eggs. He thought it was the coolest thing ever getting a wrong number text. He even told me "OMG honey, I've waited so long to get one of this...oh wow, I have to stop and think about what I'm going to do" but then when he realized it was a parent trying to get ahold of a child he changed his mind and tried to tell her the truth. Lots of people keep saying it's fake and I can tell you that we had NO part in this if it is fake then it's all on Jess's Mom's end, because we have no idea who the other person was. I think the number was from alabama or something.

The bright sides: 1) you have one of the funniest stories in texting-history, and 2) you didn't have to deal with this woman in person in anyway. Good on both of you! :-D

Now you're getting it. Also, it doesn't make sense that anyone wouldn't bother to check the number after being told repeatedly that it's the wrong number, and even after getting a picture of the other person. Nobody is actually that thick. Even if you were super thick, you would at least look to see if you made a mistake. Instead of checking the number, you're going to ask your daughter if she's on drugs? You're going to tell your own daughter how old she's supposed to be? You're going to cancel her credit card? You're going to do all of that crazy stuff, but not even make sure that it's actually your daughter? It's not that the mother is acting like a stupid person, or an unreasonable person, it's that she isn't even acting like a real, believable person. Because she isn't one.

She wasn't driving, she was at work during this whole exchange. It wasn't until she got home did the light bulb turn on. This could be fake...but trust me, the depths of stupidity people can sink to is astounding..this could be real.

I've been in a situation where I texted the wrong phone number just the one time. For about 6 months, I had some whacked out woman calling me, telling me to stop sleeping with her husband, threatened to kick me on the downstairs area and continued calling me a dirty s**t. I kept telling her, "I'm sorry, the text that I sent was meant to be to a friend of mine, and not to your husband; but I accidentally switched two number around and texted the wrong number". I kept telling her this, but kept yelling at me. It got so bad that I eventually had to change my number. The text I sent wasn't even a dirty text, it was a text saying sorry that I had to get offline so early as I had to take some medication and said goodnight. She was that stupid, that she never believed me. I told her "if you trust your husband so much, why are you assuming the worst of him? if you don't trust him, talk to him, not to me!" Gosh, I still remember how crazy she was and how drunk she sounded.

Anyone who has ever lived in Florida knows that this is entirely believable and that the mom could very well be real. There's a valid reason they call it "Florida, America's most F'd up state." Just listen to a few episodes of the Distorted View podcast and you'll change your mind. Stories like this are the norm in Florida. I happen to live in Tampa, "The most F'd up part of the most F'd up state". About 75% of the stupid c**p you hear in the news about stupid people come from the Tampa Bay area.

Okay, she's driving the whole time (for two hours). And during that time, she is able to cancel her daughter's credit card and call her friend's mom. She is able to do all of that, but she can't glance down at her phone and scroll up to the top where it shows the number of the person she is texting?

The same old man has been dialing my wife accidentally for the last five years. Older people don't always use technology the way it's intended. Habit dominates. And if they've been dialing the number for years, they will. Even my wife refuses to put certain friends and family numbers she has memorized in her phone book Whoever said "keyed" is a British-ism has spent 0 time texting Americans.

Sorry he wasn't much help that day Emilee, but well... the result is now you're married to an internet hero. And I relate 100% to his irresistible urge to mess ... I might not have shown the same restraint he did. He's playful af without being cruel and that must make pretty good daddy material no? Now quick! He's so cool 😁 If this happened to me I would have pretended to be Jess and had much more fun than this guy. And at the end I would ask which store to come to. Then I would take the stuff and when she gets there and sees me, I would say "hey! You're not my mom" and pretend to be another girl named Jess 😉 But this lady seems to be too rude to play around with. I hate it when people are this rude to me

Now you're getting it. Also, it doesn't make sense that anyone wouldn't bother to check the number after being told repeatedly that it's the wrong number, and even after getting a picture of the other person. Nobody is actually that thick. Even if you were super thick, you would at least look to see if you made a mistake. Instead of checking the number, you're going to ask your daughter if she's on drugs? You're going to tell your own daughter how old she's supposed to be? You're going to cancel her credit card? You're going to do all of that crazy stuff, but not even make sure that it's actually your daughter? It's not that the mother is acting like a stupid person, or an unreasonable person, it's that she isn't even acting like a real, believable person. Because she isn't one.

She wasn't driving, she was at work during this whole exchange. It wasn't until she got home did the light bulb turn on. This could be fake...but trust me, the depths of stupidity people can sink to is astounding..this could be real.

I've been in a situation where I texted the wrong phone number just the one time. For about 6 months, I had some whacked out woman calling me, telling me to stop sleeping with her husband, threatened to kick me on the downstairs area and continued calling me a dirty s**t. I kept telling her, "I'm sorry, the text that I sent was meant to be to a friend of mine, and not to your husband; but I accidentally switched two number around and texted the wrong number". I kept telling her this, but kept yelling at me. It got so bad that I eventually had to change my number. The text I sent wasn't even a dirty text, it was a text saying sorry that I had to get offline so early as I had to take some medication and said goodnight. She was that stupid, that she never believed me. I told her "if you trust your husband so much, why are you assuming the worst of him? if you don't trust him, talk to him, not to me!" Gosh, I still remember how crazy she was and how drunk she sounded.

Anyone who has ever lived in Florida knows that this is entirely believable and that the mom could very well be real. There's a valid reason they call it "Florida, America's most F'd up state." Just listen to a few episodes of the Distorted View podcast and you'll change your mind. Stories like this are the norm in Florida. I happen to live in Tampa, "The most F'd up part of the most F'd up state". About 75% of the stupid c**p you hear in the news about stupid people come from the Tampa Bay area.

Okay, she's driving the whole time (for two hours). And during that time, she is able to cancel her daughter's credit card and call her friend's mom. She is able to do all of that, but she can't glance down at her phone and scroll up to the top where it shows the number of the person she is texting?

The same old man has been dialing my wife accidentally for the last five years. Older people don't always use technology the way it's intended. Habit dominates. And if they've been dialing the number for years, they will. Even my wife refuses to put certain friends and family numbers she has memorized in her phone book Whoever said "keyed" is a British-ism has spent 0 time texting Americans.
