“And Then Everyone Clapped”: 69 Embarrassing Lies People Spotted On The Internet (New Pics)
The internet grants us the gift of anonymity. Sometimes, people use it for good, like donations and words of encouragement to strangers. Most of the time, unfortunately, it’s a place where people forget all rules of decorum, manners, and common sense. It’s where the logic “If no one knows who I am, I can do anything I want” applies.
So, it’s not surprising that people lie online constantly. We here at Bored Panda love stupid lies and people calling out fake stories, so the subreddit “That Happened” is one of our favorite places on the internet. It’s a community where people share screenshots of people embarrassing themselves with lies that can only be followed by a sarcastic “Yeah, right” and an obligatory “And then everybody clapped.”

Man Independently Comes Up With Idea For Frankenstein, But Is Suppressed By Feminism
I cannot imagine any (North American) child old enough to go trick-or-treating or to watch Halloween cartoons on TV would be unaware of Dr Frankenstein and his monster. The vast majority will believe that Frankenstein is the monster at least until they are in high school or college, but it would be almost impossible to not "know about" the story and character(s), at least broadly, much beyond kindergarten.
Who hasn’t embellished the truth a little bit when telling a story about themselves online? And what about dating profiles – many of us present better versions of ourselves to attract potential dates. That seems to be the nature of the anonymity the internet gives us: to seem cooler, younger, prettier, more educated, and overall just “better,” we often think it’s okay to bend the truth a little. Who’s going to know, anyway?
Fake stories like you see on this list might fool some people. Colleen Seifert, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, explains that this can be quite naive when evaluating other people’s intentions. “It's hard to imagine somebody is going to that length to try to influence my opinion about something,” she told NPR Stateside.

Some might argue that the versions of themselves that people present online are not real. Essentially, online is fake, and offline is real. Or, in other words, to quote comedian Dave Chapelle, Twitter is not a real place. But psychologists caution people from making such generalizations. For some people, the identities that they curate and express online are their true selves, whether because it’s safer or just more freeing.
As psychologist Emily van der Nagel explained to ABC News, some people create fake personas online because they want to express a genuine part of themselves. “[They could be] trying to tap into a genuine need they have to talk about intimate stuff in public, or sometimes it might be a frustration outlet.” At the same time, she believes people don’t do complete 180s and present different versions of themselves.

The clearest examples of people lying online come from dating spaces. According to research from Kaspersky Lab and B2B International, 57% of dating app users admit they embellish the truth. Surprisingly, married men lead the charge when it comes to lies on dating apps: 67% say they lie on their profiles or during communication.

Cause That's How Movie Theaters Work
You’d think that the reason why people lie on dating profiles would be to get more matches or dates. Interestingly, most users (36% of men and 31% of women) say they do it just for fun. Only 16% of online dating app users present falsified facts about themselves to appear more attractive to potential partners.

That's Not How It Works
These statistics may scare people off dating — there’s more than a 50% chance the people you matched with are lying to you. But research from Stanford University revealed that the things people are dishonest about are little white lies. The researchers called these “butler lies,” or things like saying you’re busy when you’re actually free.
“Butler lies were one way that daters try to handle saving face for both themselves and their partner,” Jeffrey Hancock, a professor of communication in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences, explained.

A lot of times, the stories that end up on r/ThatHappened feature humblebragging. Yet, that might be where a lot of these posters go wrong. Research shows people generally don’t like humblebrags. A 2018 study found that humblebragging usually backfires, even when it’s combined with humility, because people perceive it as insincere.
“Faced with the choice to (honestly) brag or (deceptively) humblebrag, would-be self-promoters should choose the former — and at least reap the rewards of seeming sincere,” the authors of the study write.

This particular one was started as a joke, it was never meant to be taken seriously. Back when Pakistan tried to mediate the Israel/Iran tensions and Pakistanis started joking about travelling to Israel on their passport. Pakistan doesn't recognize Israel as a country and the passport says very clearly it can't be used to travel there. Also anyone who actually has a Pakistani passport knows pretty well how weak it is and that traveling with one means extra extra extra scrutiny anywhere you go.

They Are Still Doing The Charlie Kirk Posts. This One Is Particularly Dumb. 🙄
Yeah, they do like fantasising that they're being oppressed and bullied, do these modern xenophobic white supremacist snowflake types. Laughing and joking when one of their people beats a congressional representative's husband half to d***h, yes - and come over all b**t-hurt when people dare exercise their right to free speech in joyous celebration when the d3ad hatemonger and all round troublemaker Charlie Kirk got himself k!lled. You see, the Republicans and their allies think it's only acceptable to laugh when their supporters - the white supremacist far right - do the mvrdering or beating half to d***h, especially when they manage to k!ll a civil rights demonstrator and so on. When it's the bad guys - you know, the white supremacist christian nationalists and their fellow travellers who are mocked after getting themselves hurt - ooh no! *That* sort of Free Speech is Bad and Should be Punished. Hypocritical snowflakes.

Pedro Earns Perfect Score On Exam For His Drawing Of Jesus Christ (True)
Pedro, apparently, did not have to sit through confirmation class with an elderly priest, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, who felt the need to describe the gory details of the crucifixion process to a room full of 13-14-year-olds in exacting, horrific detail. Unfortunately I did, and can therefore attest that Pedro's supposed illustration is not at all historically accurate. (The priest was removed from his position a few months later, and I am no longer Catholic, or Christian at all, but I will never forget that lecture.)

OMG. The level of second hand embarrassment and cringe I’ve felt reading this thread is off the charts. How can someone be so freaking stupid…
Or such unaccomplished liars . . . since that's the point of the list.
