People Are Posting Funny And Cute Photos Of Their Newfoundlands, And It’s Crazy How Massive They Are
Newfoundlands are known for the massive size and large coats, but if you take a closer look, you will discover they are just gentle giants. Out of the large dog breeds Newfoundlands top the chart as the 5th largest in the world standing at between 27-30 inches tall and weighing as much as 150 pounds. Add to their height the thick double coat that covers them, and they appear even larger. The big dog breed, as the name suggests, comes from the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Fisherman in the area needed dogs who could aid them on board, and with their natural ability to swim due to their partially webbed feet, Newfoundlands were their best choice. The big dogs kept warm by their fur, were strong enough to save a grown man from drowning. This kind of loyalty has made them ideal pets to their families, who, as you will see from this list, have had to make a little extra room in their homes.

Got Sebastian A Safety Vest Because People Need To Know He Is #notabear
This reminds me of the bright orange blanket I had for my bay (brown with black mane and tail) pony...I bought it for him when we moved to rural New Hampshire and I realized that he was looking too much like a deer out in his pasture during deer season....necessities!
Haha... I’ve been riding horses since I was 6 years old but I’ve never heard of this problem before. Hilarious!
Load More Replies...Yes, that’s a big dog, but even a small dog would look big with that angle.
I also had a horse that looked too much like a deer so I placed large orange bows on his bridle.
History is filled with famous Newfoundlands. In 1802 Lewis and Clark brought along a Newfoundland named Seaman for their 8,000-mile trek across America. The large dog earned his place on the expedition as a hunter and guard dog and even saved their lives against a rogue buffalo.
When The Lap Is Too Small For You But You Don't Mind Because You Are A God Boy
Just referring to the title: He is way beyond your regular good boy. He is the God of them all.
While these fluffy dogs have made a name for themselves with their survival and rescue skills, they have also been able to adapt to help in the home. Their sweet and gentle nature with children has even earned them the title of the "nanny dog." For example a Newfoundland named Brumus was documented to have been the "nanny dog" for Senator Robert F. Kennedy and his wife's 11 children - just like in Peter Pan.
16 Months Apart
Nope, me too. I mean, just look at them. Who's cuter, that wrinkly, inept protohuman or the massive ball of fluffiness?
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, Newfies, like most giant breeds, seldom live past age 10 or so.
Not true. I've had 8 and one lived 3 mos shy of 15, one lived to 14, two lived to 13, one did die young, at 4, and three are still with us. One will be 12 in May, and the other two are 4.5 yrs old now.
Load More Replies...But even these adorable dogs need to romp and play. They have an enormous lung capacity, which helps with water rescue but also means they might wear you out before they even begin to get tired.
Just A Newfoundland Taking His Pony For A Walk
My german shepherd seems to think that ponys are just big dogs, she always wants to play with them :)
If you plan on getting a Newfoundland it's important to do your research and prepare your home for lots and lots of drool. As very athletic, huge dogs with a large coat this is how they keep cool.
This Is A Newfoundland Dog. Not A Bear
I was just going to comment the same thing!! Lmaoo
Load More Replies...To anyone thinking it's actually a bear, well it's not. I did a google image search in reverse and found out it's a Finnish woman's dog playing on a football field. Two boys had thought it was a bear. Afterwards the owner decided to shave its fur so that people wouldn't mistake him as a bear. Here's an article about it but unfortunately only in Finnish: https://www.is.fi/lemmikit/art-2000000633582.html
@Manda McGregor Not a bear, I did a reverse image search on the photo and found out it's a dog of a Finnish woman, there are articles about it because a couple of years ago some young boys had thought they had seen a bear on a football field
Load More Replies...I’m not convinced. I was raised with Newfie and this is looking more like a bear then a dog. Where’s his tail??
That is defo a bear. The way the back of curved, the ears, the way the paws are, the muzzle... this is fake. Totally a bear.
@Ceri Ward Not a bear, it's a Finnish woman's dog playing on a football field. I did a google image search in reverse and found articles about it. A couple of young boys thought it was a bear. The owner afterwards shaved the dog's fur to make it look less like a bear and so avoid any calls to 911 about bear sightings.
Load More Replies...Newfoundlands gain 100 pounds within the first year of their life, which means lots and lots of dog food. Luckily their metabolism slows after that as well as how many calories they need.
It's Dalishush
At first, I read that as 'deli-shoes things' hahaha
Load More Replies...Grooming is another important aspect of Newfoundland care. Their enormous waterproof coat sheds frequently and must be brushed regularly. In addition your dog should be taken for regular nail trims to prevent the feet from splaying under their enormous weight.
I Love It When My Newfie Meets A Smaller Dog
My super shy schnauzer would have died from a heart attack... He´s affraid of his own shadow...
Newfoundlands can be found all around but thrive best in cool climates with wide open spaces. Dog owners who live in warmer climates must keep their dogs near air conditioners or in the water when it is especially hot to prevent heat stroke.
Straight Not Giving A F***
Yeah, that'd be right, just sweep round me cos I ain't moving !!
These curious, silly dogs are one of the smartest breeds. Their brains mixed with their unique swimming abilities are why Newfoundlands are still used as rescue dogs and lifeguards.
Thought A Bear Broke In. Nope, Just A Newfie
A counter-surfer amongst us!!!! Mine does the same thing and when you catch her she continues being naughty!!!
Even with their sweet nature many Newfoundlands find themselves in need or adopting or fostering because their original owners' weren't prepared for the amount of care that goes into raising a dog this large, so it's always important to research first.
I Heard It Is Tongue Out Tuesday

They are beautiful, but I couldn't handle the hair and drool. But I'd love to visit one!
Photos don't make the best size reference because that is clearly not a life sized photo.

"Are you serious, Mom? Okay it's summer, but was this really necessary? What about a pool instead?"
ok, please please please research BEFORE you shave a dog!!! their coats keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. of course you have to brush and remove the undercoat to help the skin breath and a groomer can help you with that. but you just entirely cut off his thermal regulation system!!! AND for a double coated breed when you shave them you take the chance that 1) it won't grow back the same color or texture, 2) it won't grow back at all, and/or 3) you're going to over heat a dog because, again, you cut off it's thermal regulation system. Double coated breeds should NEVER be shaved!!
So glad you brought this educated information to the table. I had a wonderful Newfy many years ago, and stupid me did have him shaved down on summer thinking I was helping him. That poor boy was so embarrassed he hid under my baby grand piano for weeks. His name was Big'Un and he was a precious boy. Being such a large breed they do not have a lengthy life span which is sad.
Load More Replies...I don't think you are supposed to shave them, they have a double coat and those never should be shaven (unless medical issues with skin)
Don't shave the dogs like that! Their fur keeps them insolated from the heat and cold!!
NEVER shave these dogs. Their fur insulates them from heat as well as cold.
Commentors who mention "hot damp fur" seem to have forgotten that dogs don't sweat through their skin.
I agree that they do not sweat, but from my experience with a lovable Newfie, they tend to always find something wet to get into on hot days. I apologize for the confusion.
Load More Replies...Worst idea ever. The fluff beneath grows much faster than the overcoat. the owner will now have to brush teh doge EVERY DAY to make sure, the overcoat can actually push thorugh. And if it doesn't the coat of the dog will be ruined and will soak up water, get incredibly hot in the summer and not isolate in winter. DON'T SHAVE DOGS WITH A TOP AND AN UNDERCOAT.

If There's Snow, The Newfie Will Sit
This is the second picture of one of them in snow. Now I am wondering if they need it because their coats are to warm for "warmer" climates.
Yes, these are cold climate breeds. It's not a good idea to keep them in a warmer climate (unless you have water nearby, even Nordics gets warm in summer after all)

I never saw until this post brown or black/white newfoundlands. So pretty!
There has been some debate about calling the brown and black/white coloration by a different name, but I'm not sure it that was ever settled or not.

I had to buy a bigger bed when I had my Leonberger, otherwise she would kick me out of it when she stretched her legs.

Just Taking A Peek
Just keeping cool and maybe having a snack of butter, milk, cheese, last nights left overs, a bit pie, all the pudding and the whole ham that was going to be for the week end at the lake.
I would just love the ability to have one of these beautiful animals. Sadly, live in apartment with "no -pets" clause and no garden. :(
These dogs do have health issues. They're prone to eye and ear infections and have to have both constantly kept clean...and believe me, cleaning a Newfie's ears is thoroughly disgusting. Ear wax that could fill a swimming pool. Yech. ...///... They also are prone to heart disease and arthritis as they age and tend to have short life spans. A 9 year old Newfie is a geriatric dog.
Ears= yuck - one of my boxers had a chronic yeast skin problem, paws, muzzle creases, ears. Tried everything to clear it up. When she was half asleep every evening I would be gently removing the icky brown stuff from her ears trying not to wake her up. Bless her, she was so patient.
Load More Replies...They are beautiful in did...but I can only imagining that you must be stupid rich to be able to coop with a large dog food, veterinary, groomer bill ...and have a huge house with a huge garden ...and can you imagine to scoop the poop? wow...*watching my small black cat pooping on his kitty litter box*
I live in South Africa and since my jack russel was poisoned this past weekend by awful fucktards, I want ons just to scare the living daylights out of those nasty humans who did that to my Peanut

Just 17? There are about 340 breeds recognized by FCI and then a massive number of breeds that havn't been reconized by them, for example the Swedish White Elkhound. You need to get yourself a bigger house. ;)

Contrary to what many people seem to believe, you do not need an especially large home to have a dog of a large breed. You need to get outside for proper walks!
