‘Heck, I’m Old’: 50 Painfully Funny Posts And Memes Younger Generations Might Never Understand (New Pics)
Your back’s been hurting more and more recently. You’ve found yourself sneakily making the font on your work computer screen bigger. And you’ve realized that the music and films that those darn kids enjoy these days are beyond bizarre. No, the world’s not coming to an end—you’re simply getting older.
The ‘[Heck], I’m Old’ online community is a place on the internet where everyone can post about aging. We’ve collected some of their most nostalgic pics and funniest memes to share with you, dear Pandas. So put on your reading glasses, scroll down, and upvote your fave pics. Meanwhile, you’ll have to excuse us, we’ve gotta sit down for a moment—we’ve got a few things to come to terms with…
Bored Panda got in touch with Glenn Geher, Ph.D., to get his opinion on what to focus on so that we can live a high-quality life as we age. Geher is a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz, a published author, and an avid marathon runner. Read on for the insights he shared with us.

Who Remembers The Original Search Engine?
Yes. Library catalogues were really wonderful. And they worked flawlessly.
Professor Geher explained to Bored Panda that the human body "is a wear item" and that there's an increase in health issues associated with aging. "From a societal perspective, making sure to provide easy access to high-quality health care—especially among older folks—is essential. And as we all know, some nations seem to do this better than do others," he said.
"This said, lack of social connections is a known detrimental factor when it comes to health. And unfortunately, many elders tend to find themselves living alone for various reasons (e.g., death of a partner). And loneliness tends to be relatively prevalent in urbanized areas—which are, of course very common in the modern world."
As such, public policy and government experts ought to prioritize issues like ensuring that elders have access to high-quality medical care and have safety nets "to help cultivate social connections." From a large-scale health perspective, these are both critical issues.
This Made Me Laugh!
I Know That Feeling…
You know you are getting old when you look backwords instead of forward.
Geher, who is currently 53 years old, shared with Bored Panda that he's training for his 12th marathon right now. "I am fully expecting my time to be much slower than my time when I ran my first marathon at 29," he revealed that, as a result, he himself has been thinking about the issue of embracing the aging process.
"Yes, aging is a beast. It comes with such adverse outcomes as physical decline, cognitive decline, and, often, stress and trauma associated with the increasing loss of loved ones," the professor said.
"To buffer oneself against these adverse outcomes, from the perspective of positive evolutionary psychology, folks who are getting up there in years would be wise to eat natural foods and exercise regularly, maintain an active lifestyle that includes necessary cognitive expenditure, and take steps to make sure to be socially connected to at least a small group of close others."

Geher pointed out that the adage of aging being better than the alternative is generally true. "Taking the steps mentioned here can go a long way toward helping make the aging process a relatively positive experience."
Professor Geher also has a Substack page and also writes a blog on Psychology Today. You can find the newest topics he covers there.
The online community has been going strong for nearly a full decade now—it will be celebrating its 10th birthday this September. At the time of writing, the group had just over 114k members.
It’s easy to see why the sub is as popular as it is. It’s taking a very relatable subject (aging, getting grumpy, wanting simplicity, realizing that the younger generations might lack taste) and putting a fun spin on it. It’s a corner of the internet where you can find the humor in getting woken up by your bladder at 3 am and having an ID card that shows you were born before the turn of the millennium.

It might sound cliche, but your age really is just a number. What matters far more is your lifestyle, how active a social life you have, and how you feel on a daily basis. If you’re healthy, active, surrounded by loved ones, and find gratitude in the smallest things, then it really doesn’t matter if you’re 70 or 17—you’re living life well.
However, a happy and healthy life isn’t something that happens automatically. It requires a lot of personal effort, a dash of discipline, and the willingness to set strong boundaries.
There is no definitive way to be happy because everyone's an individual with unique goals, but it’s vital that you get the basics right first. These include taking care of your physical health, staying mentally sharp, maintaining your social connections, and living in the present.
As far as your physical health is concerned, the habits that you want to develop as soon as possible are common sense ones. Like getting enough sleep every night. Drinking plenty of water. Spending time in nature. Moving lots. Reducing screentime. Eating slightly less than you normally would. Avoiding drinking alcohol and smoking. Wearing sunscreen. And choosing to eat veggies, healthy fats, and protein instead of processed foods and refined sugars.

Absolutely!
Health and fitness coach Anna Armagno Toussaint previously explained to Bored Panda that we should all strive to focus only on the things that we can control in life instead of worrying about the things that we can’t.
"You can control what you put into your body. You can control your water intake and the foods you choose. You can choose to exercise or be sedentary. In most cases, there are good or bad decisions you can make. And the biggest one is that you can choose your mindset about things," she said.

I bought bicycles for my children once. They came in boxes. I had to construct them myself. Instant 'how the hell do I do that?' On the instructions, one action I had to do was to make a space between the break pad and rim of the tyres. The space had to be the width of a dime. I'm Irish ! What the F**k size is a dime?

The fitness coach explained that there will always be hereditary factors that you’ll have to work around. Some might be minor. Others might be as serious as autoimmune diseases. You can’t choose these things, so you have to work around them. Embracing a positive outlook can help you get through those tough times, as you come to terms with reality.
Meanwhile, fitness coach Anna told Bored Panda that what really doesn’t help is feeling jealous that someone else might have physical advantages that you don’t. Whether it’s seemingly limitless energy or the ability to recover quickly after exercise. You can’t let those feelings of resentment dominate you.

If you find yourself struggling with your physical or mental health or having trouble with the very idea of getting older, it’s perfectly fine to ask for help. Reach out to your friends for advice. Talk to an expert about your goals. Seek out a therapist. Getting another person’s perspective on your struggles is invaluable!
Age UK, the country’s leading charity, previously told Bored Panda that staying active is paramount as we age. It helps to have a host of different hobbies and to try out new activities. Not only will they keep you moving, they’ll also stimulate your mind, and help you forge new friendships. The activities could be anything: from doing arts and crafts or taking photography or computer classes to doing gardening or joining a book club. Social isolation is horrible for our health, so it's essential that you regularly find ways to connect to other people.
It Really Was A Game Of Winners And Losers
TV screen, ha! We listened to the RADIO to get the school closing updates. Each school had a number and you'd be listening so hard, praying to hear your number.
Load More Replies...I had to listen to the AM radio station, and if there was static where your school MIGHT have been you had to wait for the bottom of the hour for them to read it again!
We had to wait for a phone call. My Mom was a teacher and she had to call the kids in her class. I had to go knock on the neighbor's door thatdidn't have a phone.
We had a phone tree for this. The teacher called two persons and these two had to call two other persons each, etc.
Load More Replies...True...but the excitement level as a kid when you saw your school's name was like you won the lottery
In the Netherlands nothing about school came at radio or television. All we had was a "snowball" phoning list. So of a class was cancelled, school would call the person living the most far away from school. That person called the next one on the list. And so on. We lived so far away most of the time when they called we were already halfway there
The only time I remember high school being canceled was when the high school burned down. This was in Northern Montana.
I might be even older. At our kid’s elementary school, if it would be a no school snow day, two phone calls were made from the principal to two moms( one of whom was me for four years), who each called one half of the room moms in each classroom, who then called each parent about no school. Not kidding! I started this in 1979.
Hahah especially when there are strikes that day! There were times I had to walk to school to understand im the only one there and go back home grumbling
Never had anything like that because we didn't have TV until I was around 12... and, yeah, they never cancelled school for anything.
Waiting to see your school and that was surely a relief when your school was listed. Hey wait what if you misses it?
T'aint Nut'n. We had to walk 5 miles in the snow up hill both ways and a little sign said no school today.
Ahahahahahahaha! Yeah! And we always assumed our school district would be the last one to say that they were closed! When this current generation grows up to their 20's, I wonder what the new generation will use to find out?
I remember one time it was snowing SO BAD, the visibility was like 0, and wondering whether school was going to be cancelled. It was. Not like today, schools hear a rumor of a storm and schools are cancelled!!
We had to listen to the local radio station. School closings were right after the Ag report. When we heard "the price of hogs is down" we knew to listen for the list of schools. If we missed it we'd either have to wait till the next go-round of news - Ag report - closings or call a friend & hope they hadn't already gone back to sleep.
Kids are out of school more then they are in school now
Try this: Get to school find the way impassable, due to fallen trees, get a policeman tell your Mom, turn the car around, school is cancelled. You will be contacted when it is clear.
We had to listen to the morning agricultural report on the radio to find out if school was closed during the winter. Only 20mph winds and pre-blizzard conditions MIGHT close schools in the north.
We never had a day off school because of the weather - we walked there through snow, floods and gales........and you'd better not be late either!!!
If someone got between you and the tv right when they would have your school/district you would ave to sit and wait for the next around.
When we lived in Tacoma, my wife asked why they cancelled school when it was below freezing. Turns out that the water pipes were on the outside of the school. Imagine 300 grade school kids without working toilets.
i only remember it getting cancelled 3 times, because of a heat wave. love that rule! damned aussie heat.
me: the teacher doing that. Also we had a human phone tree so we waited for a call from another teacher.
Had to listen to the radio. TV stations didn’t offer that service when Inwas a kid.
Where I live in SE Washington, US we don't get a ton of snow, but we can get some bad ice storms. In High School, we got a new person who drives around to see if the roads are good enough for the busses to run and the schools to stay open, he was new to the area and from Canada. During this winter there was a solid 1 - 2 inches of ice over everything during one storm. They did not delay or even cancel school that day in my city where all the other citys were canceling everything. More than half the juniors and Senior class drove to school, and most of us were pissed as it was not safe to drive. It was so slick it was hard to walk from the parking lot to the school building as it was not cleared off for the students to walk around. The school board go so many complaints from the staff, students, and parents that the next dusting of snow it was an instant delay.
At my school it had to be -10 degrees farenheit for school to be canceled. Wisconsin be wildin
One snowy winter's day many years ago, we heard an announcement on the local radio that my son's high school was closed. The following day at school, he was asked to explain his absence: turned out the school had been open. We never found out the origin of the misinformation, but I'm guessing a student posing as a member of staff called the radio station and got them to announce the "closure".
naaah, kids today have to wake up Mom who checks the school homepage which just instructs me to check the regional ministry's page which Mom does before knowing if everyone can go back to bed. Wish it was over text.
When I was in school my district rarely cancelled school unless it was a snowpocalype. Now the same district: 1in. of snow and we have to cancel classes. I will say this, we get more ice then snow so I kind of understand. Although when we did get a snow day their was no school period. Now most of them have to do remote learning, so even if you get to stay home you still have to attend school. The pandemic really f****d this generations snow days!
Had to listen to local AM radio station. School was only canceled in case of a hurricane, happened once.
Yep, we used to wait for the announcement on TV or radio. Then we go back to sleep, if school's cancelled.
My school got cancelled during the oil crisis (1973) because it snowed and the central heating was oil powered, we still had to turn up to collect work though.
My school was never cancelled because we all lived withing walking distance in NYC.
Parents already had the kitchen radio on with bated breath waiting to find out whether their day would be late but normal or a living nightmare.
Gotta wait for the radio announcer to hit that sweet, sweet school closing announcement.
I had One, yes, ONE snow day. In all the years I was in school it was cancelled ONCE because of snow. Kids get once a week from October to April.
School was never canceled here in Florida unless there was a hurricane.
When school was cancelled: "Yes!! All right, let's turn off the TV and go outside. Please, Mom? Please??"
If you went in and the heating was on it was cast iron radiators that would blister your skin if you touched them.
We had to listen to the local radio station to hear if there were cancellations.
I grew the in a cold country. Every damn morning my mom would keep the radio on during breakfast time while we listened to announcements about which schools had cancelled that day. It was always quite exciting to hear if l could go back to bed.
I was already an adult when the bottom of the screen scroll thing started. When the weather was bad as a kid we turned on the radio to listen to the cancelation announcements. And school only got canceled if the weather was apocalyptically bad. You kids thinking you're old makes me lol.
Shoot, we had to wait for the name on the radio. If you missed it, had to wait until it came around again
We knew the night before in GA because our parents would rush out to buy all the milk and bread then wrap a sleeping bag around the well.
Had to walk to school and hurry back if it was closed so that I got back home before my parents leave and lock the house.
Watch the TV? We had to listen to the radio to hear our school # called.
We had a little penguin puppet named Snowbird. We'd wait until his little jingle then watch the school closings.
And if there was NOT 100 inches of snow outside YOU WERE TAKING YOUR BUTT TO SCHOOL and not by uber😂😂😂😂😂
Ehm...call tree, or just go to school and find out once you got there.
I loved this mainly because I could go back to sleep. But school was only cancelled if the state shut down, even when my school had shootings we acted like it was a fire drill walk outside wait for police to show and leave then back to class to pretend to learn.
We didn't have a local enough TV station, so we had to listen to the local radio station for school closings.
While frantically turning the dial on the radio to catch the notice there.
And god forbid you got distracted and missed your school and had to wait for it to come around again! Oh the humanity!!!!
I live in the south .. it got cancelled if we thought it was going to snow. Remember yelling ... Rockdale County .. Rockdale County .. please shut down ... unfortunately, you would always turn on the TV right after your county was called ... so you had to watch it all over again.
We hardly ever closed, but I'd sit through dozens of cycles of snow closings to see if they'd changed their mind yet
The Struggle Was Real
20th Century Babies
True. But this works best especially in situations where you're trying to get into a bar or club. Even if you're born in 1999 that make you 24 years old this year.
We keep our minds sharp when we learn new skills and socialize with others. You can also do more mentally stimulating activities like putting together puzzles or playing games in your free time.
"If we want our brain to stay in peak condition, we should use it. In fact, one of the theories about reducing or delaying cognitive aging is referred to as the 'use it or lose it' theory. Research shows that things like learning languages helps keep us brighter as we age. It is just as important to look after your brain by exercising your thinking skills, as you would do physical exercise to look after your body,” Age UK told Bored Panda.

Meanwhile, whether or not we’re nostalgic about the past will depend a lot on how (un)happy our childhoods were. Child and adolescent therapist Kemi Omijeh, a member of the BACP, previously explained to us that our childhoods are the foundation of who we are as adults. If we had a happy childhood, we’re likely to yearn for the ‘good old days.’ However if we faced a lot of tough times when we were kids, we might not want to reminisce much about the past, instead focusing on the present and future.

"Nostalgia can also be a good coping strategy for times of low mood and challenges," the therapist told Bored Panda earlier. "If we end up comparing it to our experiences today and feeling like nothing is as good as it was, then this will inevitably affect our mood and our ability to do what we need to do. We can become stuck in our nostalgia; in which case it might be best to seek help from a counseling professional to help you process your past in order to enjoy your present..”

Here's how old I am. I remember when suddenly bubble gum kept fruity flavors well and was actually soft as soon as you started chewing it. The flavor USED to drain out within seconds, and it would be stiff as hell until your teeth and mouth enzymes loosened it up. And, my fellow children from the Stranger Things years, do you realize why that was? It was because they had JUST invented ARTIFICIAL bubble gum. Bazooka, Topps and all those old-school bubble gums were made from tree sap. So here's how old you are: even if those old rumors of gum staying in your stomach for 40 years were true, it'd still be gone.

Random things I recently learned might not be a thing anymore: 1. A friend of mine has a job at a wedding store. I asked her if most groom's tuxes were plain, three piece or had a cummerbund. She had to Google cummerbund. so no. 2. Tried to find a cute key topper for my house key. I used to have a rubbery one that looked like a mushroom. Went to four stores (even Wal-Mart automotive section where they used to have a spinning rack of them) No one even knew what I was talking about. (At least they still have them on Amazon) 3. Wanted to find cute folders for a project. Most stores only have very basic solid color ones, I finally found one store that had slightly more pretty floral ones but I could not find ones with things like art, actors, bands, popular cartoons, wildlife, movies, ect. Is it just my local stores that are like this? Surely kids can get like a matching dinosaur folder/notebook/pencil somewhere.
All those are now in Scrapbooking supplies! Except for the cummerbunds... you're on your own with those. Haven't seen one since dad wore a tux to his band gigs.

“It might sound cliche, but your age really is just a number“ That's right, age is just a number invented by man to controlnus and divide us. This article is offensive, I don’t find the humor in any of this. There should be better treatments for aging in 2024 and people should have a life expectancy above 100 years old. Especially if we have a president running for a second term at 81. We have let governments manipulate us and control us for their own manipulative greed for too long,

One of the hardest things about getting older is getting used to being the authority. Like... The first time I had to tell a teacher off because they were treating my son badly was incredibly hard and had me totally shaking. (She sided with the bully over my son's asking for help, against the advice of the vice principal of the school.) My anger helped me do it, though. It's weird getting over the power dynamics established as a kid.

Ha! When my grandkids were little, I marked their heights on the door jamb of my music room. Their friends were added as time went on. ALL of them now have children. I'm going to have to start marking walls instead of jambs.

This is sad. It will never hit home the way it did for those of us watching it unfold.

Am I the only one who read the title as "Heck, I'm 115 (years) old"? :(
My car has a DAB radio and my partner is miffed because their car doesn't and he wants to listen to the channel I've got on mine...70's music

At work yesterday I overheard two conversation about struggling to find the right combination glasses/contacts. I said to my (much younger) colleague, in the 25 years time this will be you!
