Bored Panda reached out to Martin Rosner, the artist behind HotPaper comics, to learn more about his journey and creative process. Martin shared the story of how he began creating comics:
“I started making comics once my depression started getting better. It's not that the comics helped, more that I felt well enough to make them. Just so happened to be at a point in my life when I had enough free time to draw comics. I saw someone posting a comic a day on Reddit, their goal was to do that for 100 days. I said that's something I could do too. Once I started, I never really stopped.”
I get reminded: "If you really want to help, just do it. Don't ask." But then get shamed for not doing it "right" - lol
That is true. But if I don't kill you, you will kill even more people, and I will be responsible for their deaths
And so, he grows a moustache and a top hat? Yes... That's how top hat come into being.
I don't think I understand this. Is it supposed to be pro-death penalty? Or am I completely mistaken? 🤔
I take it as mocking the crime and spy dramas where the heroes finally have a gun aimed at the supervillain, and someone says killing the monster would make them just as bad, creating a ridiculous moral equivalency. If Batman would just kill those evil geniuses, they wouldn't be able to escape (yet again) from the Arkham Asylum to cause another crime wave.

“I make comedy-based comics cause that's what I like to read. From time to time, I'll have a thought or feeling I wanna share. If I think it might help someone feel less alone, I'll make a comic out of it. It's also a nice change of pace for my readers. It's nice to not box yourself in, telling yourself what kind of art you can or can't do.”

Load More Replies...Martin elaborated on his creative process and how he selects which drafts to develop further:
“I make a lot of drafts but ultimately decide on gut feeling alone. I also ask my artist friends, who make me laugh, for input. If they say it works, I'll turn the idea into a full comic. Sometimes I'll join a trend if I enjoy it myself, but I try to keep that to a minimum so I don't turn into a fad.”
Anatidaephobia: the irrational fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck or goose is watching you
And he would have gotten away with it too if it weren't these meddling geese!

“Social media definitely dictates a lot of how I make comics. Mostly the format. Always short and easy to understand. Sometimes I'll get caught up in numbers and try chasing a trend, but I'm lucky enough to never completely succumb to what the numbers dictate.”
I mean technically there’s a lot of grey area in that request… If he were free he would no longer feel that way :)
....and if he simply did not feel that way, but continued to be a genie... in other words... flatheads' wish only removes the genies' wish for freedom, but the genie remains enslaved. that sucks.

Reflecting on the overall impact he hopes his comics have, Martin added:
“Hope my comics make people laugh and that they can use my art to connect with others.”
During our follow-up conversation, Martin shared further insights into his journey as an artist and his creative approach:
"My journey as an artist, honestly, was less of a premeditated decision and more of a stumble upon a passion. I've always been a creative soul, fond of doodling, scribbling, and drawing in my spare time. Comics felt like a natural and appealing way to put my inner world on paper and share it with others."
“Forgive yourself, don’t wallow in memories of old cringe events, just let go of things..” What is this strange language?
I find that I can forgive myself easily, but it's tough to ask forgiveness.

All birds named after a person are being renamed, because a lot of those people were d***s but it’s hard to say where to draw the line. As my dad says, “they cannot pass over this golden opportunity to finally rename Canada geese, ‘Those Motherf*ckers’”

Every one is sometimes. And also at times smooth or witty but we don't remember them
He is having his bar mitzvah. In Jewish culture when a boy goes through their bar mitzvah they are considered to be a man. (Sorry if I misspelled it I'm not Jewish)
You spelled it correctly and did a pretty good job at getting the basic details right. As an addition, a Bat-Mizvah is for a girl to become a woman and a Bar-Mizvah is for a man. (Also since it's Hebrew, there's a few correct spellings, that's why you can see Chanukah and Hanukkah)
Load More Replies...I don't get this one, either. I see the Star of David, but I'm not sure how the boy going from archery to laser blasters makes him a man...or how the Star of David is relevant.
The boy is reading the Torah from the scrolls on his Bar Mitzvah, the "coming-of-age" for young Jewish boys. In effect, the transition from childhood to manhood.

jesus christ dude. everything you said in this comment is just not true at all, being transgender is not as simple as chess, being queer is not a mental illness, HRT and surgery helps people with dysphoria and feel more comfortable in their body and definitely decreases suicidal intent, and i can assure you, there are plenty of cis people who can make babies.
