These days, you can order almost anything from anywhere and have it delivered straight to your door, sometimes by the next day. Whether it’s a velvet armchair, a stained-glass lamp or some quirky piece of decor, there’s no shortage of options. Still, so much of what we buy is mass-produced and can end up feeling pretty forgettable.

Things made decades or even centuries ago can be a lot more interesting. Many have incredible craftsmanship and a charm that’s hard to find in newer pieces. The r/Antiques subreddit is full of treasures people have inherited or discovered, so we’ve rounded up some of the coolest finds below.

From the OP: "It appears to be a handcarved bas relief depiction of the last judgment. Most of the work looks like it was done by one or two people. I imagine it was hung inside, possibly outside a rural parish church, most likely in Ireland. Perhaps a commission, perhaps a votive donation, hard to say without more info. Its hard to say from the image as a whole, but its age could possibly be counted in centuries. Very unique."

Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with heading to IKEA or ordering a coffee table online. It’s convenient, and you can find plenty of nice things that way.

Still, having a few older pieces around can make a home feel more personal. There’s something special about owning an object that may have been around for generations before it reached you.

How beautiful! From the OP: "Based on the clasp, bezel, and cameo carving detail I'd say it's latter 19th century, 1870s, neoclassical shell cameo. Eos and eagle motif (goddess of dawn). Probably worth around 2500 because of how exceptionally fine the detailing is on the cameo and metalwork, overall museum quality condition, and that it has its original box."

Old Porcelain Sink At My Grandparents. With Writing “The Oceanic” Under The Faucet. USA. Any Info?

Remarkable antiques: An elegant antique porcelain sink with blue floral patterns and shell details.

    Heffhop Report

Some antiques really can be incredibly well made. Older furniture was often built from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, rather than boards made from compressed wood chips and glue, which are much more common in furniture today.

Mahogany, for example, became especially popular because it’s strong and doesn’t warp easily, according to the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute.

Solid wood can also be much easier to save if something goes wrong. A scratched or damaged piece can often be repaired and refinished, while compressed wood can swell and fall apart once it gets badly damaged.

Take jewelry. A lot of affordable modern pieces are gold or silver-plated, meaning only a thin layer of precious metal covers something cheaper underneath, such as brass or copper. Buying solid gold or sterling silver usually costs considerably more.

Browse older jewelry, though, and you can sometimes find pieces made from those materials for a much more reasonable price. They may have a few scratches after decades of wear, but precious metals can often be polished and kept looking good for years.

And you never quite know what kind of history might be hiding behind an old object. In 2018, Texas antiques dealer Laura Young spotted a marble bust sitting on the floor at a Goodwill and bought it for just $34.99.

After doing some digging, she learned that her random thrift-store find was actually a roughly 2,000-year-old Roman portrait that had once belonged to King Ludwig I of Bavaria’s collection and disappeared after World War II.

Most antique finds probably won’t turn out to have quite that backstory, but that mystery is part of the fun. You’re bringing home something that had a whole life long before it ended up in your hands.

Antiques are pretty great for another reason too. Buying something old means you’re keeping it in use instead of bringing yet another brand-new item into the world. We already buy and throw away an incredible amount of stuff.

Furniture alone creates around 10 million tonnes of waste in the EU every year, according to a 2024 European Commission report. Giving an older piece a second life is a much better ending than sending it to landfill.

At the same time, old doesn’t automatically mean better. Plenty of older pieces were made when there were fewer rules around toxic materials such as lead.

This metal can build up in the body over time and cause serious health problems. It can show up in old paint and ceramic glazes, so it may be hiding in vintage dishes, pottery or painted furniture.

If you eat or drink from something that contains lead, the metal can leach into your food or drink. Washing it won’t get rid of the problem either.

So if you picked up some beautiful hand-painted plates at a flea market and have no idea where they came from, it may be wiser to keep them on display instead of serving dinner on them.

"Taken from the Royal Maritime Museum, Greenwich where they have an identical item which is described thus: "This object is known as a Dutch seaman's tobacco box and was used as an aide-mémoire by sailors. The box is made of brass with tables inscribed on its lid and on its base. On the lid is a perpetual calendar, which allowed sailors to work out the weekday and the lunar age for any date. The table on the bottom was used in calculating a vessel’s speed. To do this, a piece of wood was thrown into the water and timed as it passed two marks on the vessel's side. The sailor then consulted the table on the box and, from the time taken in the left-hand column, read off the ship's speed from the right-hand column."
