Browse older jewelry, though, and you can sometimes find pieces made from those materials for a much more reasonable price. They may have a few scratches after decades of wear, but precious metals can often be polished and kept looking good for years.

If you eat or drink from something that contains lead, the metal can leach into your food or drink. Washing it won’t get rid of the problem either.

So if you picked up some beautiful hand-painted plates at a flea market and have no idea where they came from, it may be wiser to keep them on display instead of serving dinner on them.

Doing a little research before buying or using an antique can save you from some unpleasant surprises, especially when it comes to old materials and how safe they are today.

As long as we’re sensible about what we bring home and how we use it, though, hunting down old treasures can be incredibly fun. Finding something beautiful and unusual is a pretty good reward for the search.
