This Woman’s Boss Told Her Headscarf Was ‘Unprofessional’ So She Went To Work In Cosplay
When June J Rivas’s boss told her that her dress code was unprofessional, she didn’t realize the can of worms she was opening.
“So my boss didn’t like me wearing my hair in a ponytail everyday,” she wrote on Facebook. “Nor my hair in a scarf. “Unprofessional”. Nor my hair in pigtails. “Unprofessional”. So I filed a harassment complaint against her as our contract states “no dress code. just be clean and pressed”.” Her boss countered by devising a new dress code that outlawed all of the above plus a number of other items including straps, hats, sandals, cleavage, “and even (and I quote) “cultural head wraps”.” The new rules however said nothing about Cosplay, so after reporting her boss to the EEOC (Equal Opportunities Employment Commission), Rivas decided to have a little fun. See for yourself below.
This is the ‘unprofessional’ outfit that June’s boss had a problem with
So June filed a harassment complaint. Later, her boss responded with new rules banning all “cultural head wraps”
June finally agreed to follow the guidelines…but not the way her boss expected!
She started coming to work wearing Cosplay!
The new dress code never said anything about blonde wigs or contact lenses
The rules don’t mention anything about the leather or Spock ears either
“I have come to work each day in an outfit that fits the guidelines,” wrote Rivas
You don’t mess with Cosplayers!

Share on Facebook"No cultural headwraps" is a major discrimination lawsuit just waiting to happen. That boss has some sort of personal or racist vendetta going on. Either that or she is just a control freak.
DRESS CODE is very simple: Just keep your clothes on. Apparently your boss has never been to Wal-Mart (lol j/k)
Blaming the boss is perfect, and so is filing a harrassment complaint. Obviously, something is going wrong in that department. The cosplay, however creative it is and however cool these costumes look, is a clear escalation and provocation. A bit like "look what I think of your stupid rules, I stick to same and still pester you". It makes it questionable whether mutually solving a bad workplace atmosphere is really sought. The "don't mess with cosplay" says it all. A workplace is no place to mess with each other, neither upwards nor downwards the hierarchy ladder.
I can see your point. She's totally in her rights but that's doesn't make it the best way of action
Load More Replies...First off, I think she looked fine in her original outfit. While I'm not sure I would escalate the situation wearing cos-play, I think it's awfully rich for the boss to be asking for "professional" attire in a work place that is clearly relaxed. Look at her cubical (apparently no complaints?) and those around. There is a tissue paper banner hanging up in plain view. This isn't some law office than needs to showcase decorum. In short, a company shouldn't have a office so casual and expect employees to dress up corporate style.
You are beautiful. You looked very professional and lovely in your head wrap! I hope your boss has learned to not be a such a tight wad.
Brava!! There was nothing unprofessional about her original outfit, and her work-around is brilliant. The only unprofessional thing I noticed was the boss's apparent discriminatory stand.
We don't know the rules on hats though. That makes a huge difference. "The new dress code never said anything about blonde wigs or contact lenses..." But it does mention cleavage. I would like to point out the sleeveless shirt in the background of the original photo. I can guess what's really going on. They probably mutually hate each other and do things to try to make the other mad. It's pretty common in office settings... well, in any work setting now.
The cleavage comment is discrimination based on sex, which is a serious violation of a lot of things, unless Boss means "butt cleavage," in which case I'd agree.

I like the stick it to the boss idea but Im surprised she still has a job, dressed so unprofessionally in costume.
HAAA Good for You Hope you Win Harassment Suit n Boss get reprimanded !!!
I think that boss must be jealous. The headscarf and outfit that day look just fine to me. You are a very beautiful lady and all of the outfits you wore look great, very fresh and clean. Clearly the boss needs taking away and thrashing with some nettles until they cheer up. Or at least lighten up. What a grim world they must live in! I hope you escape to somewhere that is less deliberately-miserable soon!
It's his company. Why can't he tell them what he wants them to wear? I have to wear a uniform and no beard at fire dept. Is that racist?
Absolutely PERFECT way to get back at your boss! Great job, Rivas!
'No Cultural Head wraps" hmm, so l suppose a Muslim woman would not be allowed to wear he had-jib..
She's absolutely right here, and GO geek girl! Her boss needs a serious slap in her bank account.
I love her effort to "stick it to the whatever" but I have no idea what Cosplayers are - it sucks to be so out of touch...:)
You are clearly on the internet... what's stopping you from using a search engine?
Load More Replies...This won't be popular. I'm old school. I don't think what we wear should be more important than our careers. Creating conflict at work gets attention.....but is it good for her in the long run?
Yeah I work there. So here's an idea of the sort of stuff I saw at work before we got a "dress code" . I can't speak personally as to whether or not June was personally told to remove her scarf, but the idea that this was somehow race related is absolutely absurd considering our LOA is an African American woman. I can however say there are a lot of attention seeking drama queens in our office. HOT-Sexy-T...4c2221.jpg
So, she was promptly fired then? Right? Like, yeah the whole screw-you to the boss sounds like fun and all, but she's still your boss. That's the joy of open employment laws - you can't be forced to work, but they aren't forced to keep insubordinate employees. Side note - yes, the rule is ridiculous and certainly warrants fighting. But being pointedly unprofessional isn't really the way to do it.
Well, as a fresh graduate, i must say that if this is actually true, she is very immature. Her action doesn't show that she even value her "Cultural Head Wraps" that much. If i was her boss, i will fire her the first time she's cosplaying. Looking Proffesional is a must in workplace. Quit your bitching, and stop with all "standing up to people". This is just immature.
If its unprofessional get over it, this world is f*****g ruined because everyone needs to get butthurt over anything, grow the f**k up
That's not at all true. Maybe she couldn't find another job. Also, the company should definitely support the employees in return...

How did you come to decide that these two statements are correct? Because from what I can see in the original picture, she is dressed very professionally (unless you are docking her for the open toed shoes, in which case, grow up) and there is no evidence pointing towards her not being a team player (pretty sure you just threw that in to make yourself sound better, but it didn't work).
Load More Replies...I cannot believe you would say such a thing. You are living in a society of millennials. Deal with it. Also, it's spelled "racist".
