Disney’s newest ‘woke’ Snow White film has hit theatres — and subsequently plummeted to the floor.
The live-action princess movie released worldwide on Friday, March 21, and box office figures are shaping it up to be one of the franchise’s worst-performing movies in recent years.
In Thursday previews, it only made approximately $3.5 million and is projected to earn $45 to $55 million during its opening weekend. Not to mention, the film itself cost over $250 million to make, excluding those targeted to marketing.

Disney’s ‘woke’ Snow White is turning out to be a disappointing movie, in terms of the box office

To compare, Disney’s Little Mermaid remake, which was considered a box office disappointment in light of other live-action adaptions, made $95 million during its opening. 2019’s Dumbo made $2.6 million in previews, but only cost $170 million to make.
So why is it flopping so badly? There seem to be a multitude of reasons.
The most glaring of problems lies with Disney’s ‘woke’ agenda that they’ve been trying to shove onto the film.
A review by Daily Mail’s Brian Viner stated it was nothing more than “a painfully muddle-headed affair” after giving the film only two stars.

“Disney’s contorted attempts not to offend anyone have somehow managed to offend everyone,” he wrote, also bringing up how bizarre of a choice it was to use computer-generated imagery to make the dwarves instead of employing actual actors with dwarfism or a similar medical condition.
The Times of London also didn’t hold back in giving their honest review: “Believe the anti-hype. It’s that bad,” they warned viewers.
“It represents a new low for cultural desecration and for a venerable 102-year-old entertainment company that now looks at its source material with a pinched nose of disgust.”
After its worldwide release just yesterday, critics haven’t been hesitating in slamming the live-action film

Another critic from the New York Post slammed, “The timeless classic, a groundbreaking achievement for animation, has been turned into another pointless and awkward live-action automaton that vanishes from your mind the second it’s over.”
One review from Vulture read, “It’s garishly ugly and padded out with new tunes from Pasek and Paul that are as smooth and unremarkable as river rocks, all of which may or may not matter to its target audience, who could just be bashing their decision about whether to see the movie on how unacceptably woke social media has informed them it is.”

Indeed, during the months and weeks leading up to the film’s release, Rachel Zegler, who plays the titular character, has made it clear that Snow White won’t be the typical longing girl who dreams of true love.
Instead, she’ll be a princess who wishes to be an independent “fearless leader,” finding strength within herself.
“The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so,” she told Extra TV in an interview from 2022. “There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird. So we didn’t do that this time.”
It is projected to make around $44 to $55 million for its opening weekend

For many people, they were upset with this new ‘woke’ view, afraid it would take away from the quirks and personalities that made Snow White… Snow White.
“Not every girl wants to be a leader. Plenty of girls want to find love,” one person said. “That’s perfectly healthy.”

Jo, an avid movie lover from Vancouver, BC, told Bored Panda, “I empathize if Disney GAVE [Rachel Zegler] the direction to express to admittedly ‘woke’ agenda, but even as a very liberal woman, I am offput by just how hard Disney is shoving their message of ‘female empowerment’ and ‘re-telling a problematic story for a modern audience.’
“Disney, if you truly cared about expressing the diversity of your modern audience, you wouldn’t need to be shouting from the rooftops of knocking door to door to tell everyone. Your work would speak for itself, especially to those for whom it matters most.”
In response, many have decided to take this movie off their to-watch list.
Rumors have also been circulating around social media that Zegler and her co-star Gal Gadot, who plays the villainous Evil Queen, don’t get along with one another, given their contrasting views over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — another reason why some are boycotting the film.
A source told People the two “have nothing in common,” and added, “On top of that, their political views differ, adding to the tension.”
And its not just the critics — those on social media have made it clear how uninterested they are in seeing the film

I think they're saying it's "woke" because Snow White was described as "skin as white as snow" (hence, y'know, her name) in the original fable, and they cast a POC in the live action. (I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the casting choices, just explaining why people might think it's "woke".) And instead of casting actual little people as the seven dwarves, they just CGed in some dwarven monstrosities. (Yes, "dwarf" is a derogatory and inappropriate term for little people IRL, but I think if they spoke with actors who are little people, they may have been fine with being cast as "fantasy-race" dwarves. Plus, it would give disadvantaged actors - those with disabilities or other physical issues - more screen time, which is good.)

Stop trying so hard to make everything SO politically correct! Snow White was Snow White because she was WHITE AS SNOW so why change that just to please weak minded easily offended people?! This movie was a classic. And it was a LOVE STORY which only the confused minds of America would portray as “stalking”. Either stop remaking these films or remake them as closely to the real thing as possible. It’s sad, and a slap in the face to the originals, all because “soft America” is afraid to offend anyone. Anyone who’s offended has the choice to not watch, and if they do well, get over it and yeah, be “woke”. Woke to the fact that everyone rather over race, women’s rights or a medical condition, will ALWAYS be offended. So please Disney, be true to the originals, grow some balls and stop trying so hard to please everyone. The True Disney did JUST THAT and ended up with amazing beautiful and loved classics that left everyone that watched alive and breathing, even if a little offended.

I see they're using the definition of WOKE the means "anything I don't like or that I disagree with". I mean, I think the live action remakes are useless, stupid, and unnecessary. Just Disney trying to make a quick buck without doing anything original. But that doesn't make them "Woke". In fact, for all of his accusing, the OP never actually explains *why* the movie is "woke". Apparently it's "woke" just because he says it is.

There is actually a reason for the remakes. Copyright Law. Short version, by making these remakes they can hold on to the ownership of the characters. Otherwise the original movies would enter the public domain and be available for use by anyone without paying royalties. So you'll continue to see live action remakes no matter how bad they fail. Because they Have to remake the movie.

I don't care much for most of the live action remakes that Disney has done, except The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, those were alright. There are so many amazing stories to be told that you don't have to keep remaking the old ones. Make new ones, encourage new storytelling from new writers etc...

while i generally have distain for the term 'woke' i can see why some people are saying this film's direction was firmly on that scale. there are some things that should not be altered when it comes to films/plays, etc. in this case, a latina really was a poor choice (she does have a decent voice, though) because her very name is based on the original source stating her skin was 'white as snow'. but that is a very small issue when put against the character's emphasis on becoming an independent woman. it just falls into the kind of issues that harry potter has with person of color to play snape in the series as well as Hermoine in the cursed child play. some things just should not be changed and it has nothing to do with trying to avoid appearing racist or woke.

What exactly does the first sentence in the article implying? Could Bored Panda lead the charge in society to clearly define a definition of the word 'woke' when it is used in print? This word is generally thrown around as an insult by those who feel it is mind-bogglingly ridiculous to have empathy for others and their situations. Personally, I would rather be 'woke' than 'aslept'.

The term "woke" was actually used by people that introduced undesired practices into the industry as reference to themselves to signal that they stand with the social problems afro-americans face. Due to their actions the term gained a negative reputation and is nowadays used to descripe media products, companies or people that promote diversity and representation in an extremist manner. Corporations switched to "ESG" and due to backlash to "DEI", which currently is also in the phase of replacement since it again is negatively associated.

The problem doesn’t lie so much with the movie itself. Yes there are cheesy executions with the CGI and storyline. But the real problem lies within Disney, and its woke executives. Sh*t really does run downhill. Because those at the top, with their radical woke ideologies, have infected the entire Disney company. Pushing its radical woke agenda down the throats of its consumers. It really shows what the Disney company thinks of its fan base. It’s extremely offensive that the Disney company thinks we must be force fed an ideology in order to be the people they think we should be. It’s causing a once thriving and booming company that everyone (worldwide) loved. To now head towards bankruptcy. These woke executives, and all the brainwashed minions working for them. Is the cancer that needs to be cut out, and eradicated; root and stem. Woke is broke!! In every sense of the word. So why try to “fix” something that was never broke? Or woke? But by doing so. Disney is now headed for broke.

Instead of ruining and completely reinventing a ‘classic’. Why not leave the ‘classics’ alone for all who have loved and enjoy them and just create new stories for the all the new agendas. We really don’t need to pick apart a lady wearing a dress fleeing death via an evil stepmother queen, being rescued by a lovely prince and a family of kindly dwarves helping her. Some of us happen to love the old stories and don’t think it’s those stories that do us any harm in life. Stories are fantasy fiction to be enjoyed as such and don’t have to be realistic. Since when did the woke brigade demand so much cold hard realism discussed in this thread and what for? It’s ok to enjoy unrealistic stories. Non of us can fly like Superman , or pack a punch like the Hulk, yet superhero movies seem to be ever as popular and non offensive to most people. So what’s so wrong with Brothers Grimm stories?

I'm glad, I can just go into a movie and enjoy it of dislike it for what it is. It must suck to have to pick apart every movie based on if it's WOKE or RASIST. So many friends won't watch this or that because some actor/director/grip whatever worked on it. How's your hate a loathing working out for you (eating you up inside) ? I'll be sitting there with my popcorn :)
