Russian Fisherman Posts Terrifying Creatures Of The Deep Sea, And People Want Him To Stop (New Pics)
Roman Fedortsov (previously here) spends most of his time on fishing trawlers. Some of his catches, however, end up going viral on the internet instead of being quietly digested in someone's tummy.
"I'm 39 and have been working onboard trawlers for seventeen years," Roman told Bored Panda. "I live in Murmansk, Russia. It is a big port, and that's why I enrolled in the Marine University after school. My specialization has a lot to do with fishing technology. I know how to prepare fish for freezing and further delivery to the customer."
Roman brought most of these photos from the Norwegian and Barents seas while some of them came ashore from the Atlantic Ocean.
Once on a fishing trip, Roman and his mates live in six-hour cycles. They work for six hours, then rest for another six. And repeat. "We are to catch commercial fish such as Cod, Haddock, Halibut, Redfish, Herring, Mackerel, and so on," he added. "The most extreme fish I have ever caught are Frilled Shark, Rabbitfish, Big Sunfish, Angler, Stoplight Loosejaw..."
"During my watch, I work at the fish factory. I'm responsible for processing the fish, so I have to control other seamen while they're working, too."
Roman really likes finding unusual types of animals aboard the trawl. "I decided to create social media accounts because many people have no idea how some of the fish look. I'm constantly impressed by the appearance of some deep water fish and want to share my experiences with other people."
"I have never been scared of the fish I catch," he said. "I'm always interested and impressed."

This is just a puffer fish that has been dried out in the sun and therefore his skin has been pulled back revealing his teeth more. They are really harmless. They eat coral so they have those crazy teeth.

Look I get all these posts about the poor animals and the cruelty however remember there are two sides to every story. Firstly educational purposes I feel much more informed and some inspiration to look after the ocean more to protect these beautiful animals. Secondly, do you eat meat? fish? use anything from rainforests, any products like palm oil? dairy? it is impossible not to. And even vegans have to get their protein from somewhere which is usually places farmed on deforested soil and done by poorly paid workers. Thirdly these animals could simply have been too curious and Finally if they had been doing this in large numbers that would have been wrong but they were only finding small amounts from 1 to maybe 4 of each animal. and imagine the research on the animals we could find cures to cancer etc.

How do they catch these fish by accident if they're looking to catch commercial fish? I also wonder what they do with the fish afterwards..... well, if they look like that I guess they're already dead, but I hope they're being used for research at least, because that seems like a waste and honestly sad.

Exactly my thought. There is no way these are bycatch because most of these live too deep under the ocean. It is very interesting to see more of the deep sea, since it's still so unexplored, but I wished these poor fish wouldn't have to die for this.

The thing to take away from this though, is that all of these creatures are just "bycatch"- that is, we killed them just because it's much easier to just throw in a big net and catch everything than it it for us to be selective and ONLY catch the fish we actually plan to eat. Because, hey, who cares about fish becoming scarce? Not our problem, since we'll be dead anyway by the time that happens, amirite? As long as we get that tuna salad today, who cares about the future... :/

This is a kinda useless article, since it doesn't explain what the animals are, sure with most of the ones I can guess what they most likely are (some kind of sea cucumber, a clutch of eggs in hatching etc.) but it would be nice to have a proper explanation.

I'm assuming that all the fish was collected from a dragnet that touches the bottom of the sea. Having someone documenting all of this is a rare on fishing vessels. We all should be glad to be able to see these pictures.

My special friend, the blobfish, it´s an endangered species & I signed several petitions for this fish, on #Care2 & other petition sites, but I don´t find him that ugly, he looks like an elderly human somehow, with that big "nose".... Even has something cute!!!

If you're going to do this, at least make it educational and take time to post what they are and something about their habitats and behaviors and maybe where the came from or even at what depths, because while seeing photographs of these creatures is fascinating, knowing more would be useful otherwise, just leave them be ....or get your photos and release them

Firstly educational purposes I feel much more informed and some inspiration to look after the ocean more to protect these beautiful animals. Secondly, do you eat meat? fish? use anything from rainforests, any products like palm oil? dairy? it is impossible not to. And even vegans have to get their protein from somewhere which is usually places farmed on deforested soil and done by poorly paid workers. Thirdly these animals could simply have been too curious and Finally if they had been doing this in large numbers that would have been wrong but they were only finding small amounts from 1 to maybe 4 of each animal. and imagine the research on the animals we could find cures to cancer etc.

If you're going to do this, at least make it educational and take time to post what they are and something about their habitats and behaviors and maybe where the came from or even at what depths, because while seeing photographs of these creatures is fascinating, knowing more would be useful otherwise, just leave them be ....or get your photos and release them

Almost all are dead by the time they come up.. I'd rather have them go down in some sub and take pictures/film.

All of these are dead. Most of these 'weird and wonderful' things are caused when humans do a certain thing to them. Humanity deserves to die, as all it has done is destroy and conquer.
