“Has Anyone Heard Of Such Nonsense?”: Mum Is Left Dumbstruck After Daughter Gets Detention Because Her iPad Was On 93% Battery

There are many reasons why a kid is given detention at school. This form of disciplinary measure for misbehaving or violating academic conduct is nothing new, and some of you may even carry a distant memory of it.

But this recent story posted by a teacher and mom Selina who goes by @Missy_E36 on Twitter makes people question when it is appropriate to implement such punishment on students.

“My daughter was issued detention because her iPad, when she arrived at school, was 93%,” the mum tweeted asking if “anyone has heard of such nonsense”. Feeling totally flabbergasted, Selina contacted her daughter’s teacher via email to find out more about the incident.

Logically, other Twitter users felt equally confused about this unusual situation, so the thread became a heated debate ground for figuring out the truth somewhere between implementing detention on kids, school policy, and the percentage on an iPad battery.

To find out more about this situation, Bored Panda reached out to the mom of a daughter who got detention for arriving at school with 93% battery on her iPad. The woman said that she was puzzled as to why her daughter was given detention for something so trivial.

“Nothing like this had happened before to her or my other daughter who completed her school leaver exams recently. I’m a teacher myself and even I wouldn’t have dreamt of issuing detention for something so minor – regardless of the expectation,” the mom who’s a teacher herself told us.

Moreover, her daughter told her that the teacher went around saying those were the rules, yet other pupils in other classes were getting away with it.

The woman has since heard back from the school, but she wouldn’t like to go into detail about exactly what was said. She said that “they explained they ‘systematically tested the iPad charge’” and added that “their response in no way clarified their position or reasoning for issuing detentions and inducing unnecessary fear in the pupils.”

According to the mom, there is absolutely no reasonable grounds for these detentions or why they expected iPads to be charged to at least 97%. “Yes, the pupils use the iPads during their learning but I know that they can work effectively for the entire day at 60%. I get that it must be frustrating if several pupils’ iPads suddenly died during the lesson but that shouldn’t mean they are punished for it in such an archaic way. It seems arbitrary,” she told Bored Panda.

To those saying children sometimes don’t charge devices to get out of doing work, and those saying it’s a lesson in having your equipment ready to work, neither of those scenarios are the case here. The child DID have her device charged. And it was sitting at 93%. At that percentage, you can get hours of work done. 4 extra % points won’t make any difference. Now, either of your points might apply had the child arrived with her iPad at 50% or lower. But, as several IT specialists have commented, it may have been at 100% when she unplugged it and put it in her school bag right before leaving the house, but lost 7% charge by the time she got to school. This is a school that has become rather draconian with its rules, and needs to get over itself and make sure kids can charge electronics when they need to—-and have a selection of chargers for them to borrow if they forget their own. Cripes, these are kids, ffs. Let them be kids while they can, and cut the a break for not being perfect.

And kids don't usually do those things on purpose, it's usually because they forget to charge them, just like we adults do sometimes, because we have so much going on. Quite frankly kids really aren't that conniving or smart. ( I'm not saying they're stupid either). They just forget.

Unless it's a brand new account or few posts or something, seems unlikely to be a fake, I can't imagine the average faculty for school to be going on an alt account to post all the time. First, could be, but I don't put it past some people to believe that without a connection needed

I know several schools that use laptops and tablets quite extensively. The desks all have fixed charging stands, and the kids keep their chargers at home. No problems with classroom management because it's all built in to the desks so nobody can forget a charger- and also has the added benefit of meaning the kids have a much more ergonomic set up. And speaking as a teacher- if you're using a laptop or tablet so extensively you risk emptying a 100% charged battery by the end of the day. THEN YOU'RE USING IT TOO MUCH!

That's what I was thinking: if your lessons somehow need a full day of ipad use then it's on you to provide the charging stations. Also, I didn't even know that ipads at school were a thing now, but having the students use them for hours on end just doesn't seem like a good idea...

If kids aren't charging ipads on purpose to get out of work, then the charge is gonna be almost nothing when they show up to school. If a kid shows up and has greater than 80 percent it'll last the day. Let it go when there's a reasonable amount of charge. Also these are kids! They aren't the most consistent. They are still learning. Occasionally they'll forget. Be kind. If you don't have a charge bank or a couple spare ipads, you as a teacher are unprepared to deal with reality.

First off, isn't it unhealthy on the unit to charge it too often? I don't use an ipad but they warn you about your phone. Second, parents, if you disagree, take it to the school board and demand a meeting! That's your right. And you can always bypass the principal and speak with the administrator if you feel you're not being heard. You have rights as a parent and you are the advocate for your children. Don't allow them to manipulate or bully you just because they think they can. You have rights too and so does your child.

Apple products are notoriously bad at holding a charge and can take forever to recharge. That's why I switched to a pixel phone and a Microsoft surface. Chromebooks also seem nice. I don't know why an iPad would be a preferred item at a school.

I suppose I'd be getting a great many detentions. You see, when I graduated from High School, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple/ios, was only 6 years old. We used paper and pencil, and their battery's we're never charged.

In the district where I work, teachers often have pencils for students to borrow. However those pencils are not "keepers." Think short pencils with no erasers. And students drop pencils all the time. As for devices, I don't know if any device that lasts all school day with near continuous use. Some teachers provide charging ports (students have have their own cords). And many students will move to the outlets.

Here’s an easy solution for the school, external battery chargers. They’re cheap, good for a couple full charges, and can be easily recharged in the classroom. If they want to be real sticklers about it, they could make every kid get their own that they keep in the classroom. That 97% rule is so arbitrary, it’s utter nonsense.

Makes me think of when I went to school, I wasn't allowed to go to gym class one day because I had off white instead of white socks so I didn't have the correct gym uniform. Didn't get detention but I was sad because I loved gym class and my grade level only had it every two weeks. Plus I had to stay behind and do schoolwork quietly, even when I broke my leg I was allowed to go along and watch...

Americans are weird about detention. Growing up in Germany I don’t even recall that being a thing. I went to a US Highschool for six months and to this day I can’t believe the unfairness and pointlessness of detention. The family I was staying with went on a short vacation during my time there and took me with them (after informing the school). When I came back I had to sit in detention for the time I missed. There was no schoolwork, no lesson, nothing educational, just sitting in a classroom with other „delinquents“ staring at a blackboard for a defined period of time. Ridiculous.

Funny how all of the commenters that were IT specialists found the rule ridiculous, and everyone who supported it either suspect children of being lazy and trying to get out of work, or think that all rules should be followed simply because some f*****t decided to create it. Sorry folks, but not every rule should be followed. That's a lesson that history has taught us over and over. Adhere to what is right, not what some tyrant says people should do. Blindly following rules simply because they exist, when taken to the extreme, is how we get events like the Holocaust. Blind faith and obedience is NOT a virtue.

As a tech person this is just a teacher being a ah. it could have been a 100% when the kid left home. Who knows what the kid spent the morning doing. Was the kid studying for a test on the bus. All the text books are digital. Was he working on a paper. Reading a book? Being a power tripping b**** isn't an excuse to punish someone. We have a rule about the computer that belongs to school. Do not use it for anything but school work. That 7 % isn't going to be the end of the world.

If you are going to have ipads for your lessons, every desk needs to have a charger port. And yes they can charge it at the school. You are using them at school after all. If you don't want that, keeps the ipads at school and ensure they are charged in the morning. And stop giving detentions for things that cause no harm.

This is the most petty thing ever. Some devices won't even charge to 100%. When my phone battery was failing, it never got a higher charge than 83%, even when I charged it 24 hours. Unless the battery status is relatively new or the iPad or Android is newish, this can happen to anyone.

Are the Ipads school issued? Does the school provide funding towards charging the Ipads? I know that there are some initiatives in some UK Collages where Ipads are loaned to students but it's a very low percentage here. If the Ipads are the property of the School there in America why don't they use that one person who goes around checking the battery percentage on the ipads to actually pop newly charged batteries paid for by the school into each ipad daily?

My iPad is at 90% as I type this. That is a silly reason for detention.

We had just gotten two computers in my senior year, 40 years ago. Very old style word processor computers!

There are so many reasons this is stupid. Basically I'm sure it's one guy on a power trip. I'm thinking that's a miserable working environment for the teachers, as well. And seriously, if your school is utterly dependent on tablets, every desk should have charging available.

I can't imagine this. My kindergarten daughter had a school ipad, and that thing died constantly, like after a night of charging, dead. The teacher took it away saying she wasn't getting it back because we never charged it. 🙄🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️Schools get stupid about ipads I guess.

Ridiculous.

Take it to the school board, tell TV and newspapers. They'll change their minds about it

Detention because of breaking rule: understandable; The rule itself, on the other hand: Totally ridiculous.

Personally, I'm absolutely appalled at this rule. I just graduated and in my school system (the same one my siblings are now going through) you have iPads up till 4th grade then you recieve a Macbook to do your work. The school system is f**ked up. That's all.

I would amend the rule so that any kid with their iPad not charged properly, and then later in the day has it die on them, gets a detention.

At my school, it is no problem to load your iPad during class. I’m just shocked about how American schools are often so strict and have so many nonsense rules…

This is in the UK not the US! The US works hard to get kids to stay in school and graduate because otherwise they end up depending on the government for assistance and that is not the goal.

Given the grammar and spelling of the posts, not to mention the nature of the education acronyms, I think this is likely to be the UK actually.
