30 Of The Darkest Realities People Often Choose To Live In Denial About, As Shared By Folks Online
It’s nice to put on rose-tinted glasses and create your own tiny happy bubble avoiding all the world’s problems. But pretending that they don’t exist won’t make them go away and being aware of them is important in trying to combat them.
However, people tend to do that as they refuse to deal with the negative emotions that sometimes can be crushing. Though not Reddit user Spartan1694, who wanted to hear only serious answers to the question “What are some of the most common dark realities people choose to live in denial about?”
More than 17k people joined the conversation and wanted to talk about the things that happen in real life but some choose to not acknowledge. Do you agree with them? Are there any more that you would like to add? Let us know in the comments!

Mental health issues are not cute, funny or quirky. Being called a psycho is no compliment.
Depressions arent just a phase, schizophrenia is not just hearing weird noise sometimes, anxiety and panic attacks are not just 5 seconds of a flip out and everything is fine again.
Mental health issues are real and not to be taken lightly, it's not just a phase.
If you need help, please reach out to someone, talk to them. Let them help you. Theres not just that one way out. You can and will have good days again.
People don't take mental health seriously enough. Please get help if you need it, stay safe y'all, someone loves you!! If you don't feel like there's anyone you can talk to, I'm a friendly internet stranger who won't judge 💖
Dissociative Identity Disorder isn't having a mood swing, either. Joking about having a split personality isn't funny. (and on that topic, Bipolar isn't just having a mood swing, either) And as someone who is both Schizophrenic and has DID, I can't say this kind of stuff enough.
god some of my very close friends are part of a system and another person ik was faking having DID and making these ridiculous claims but i could call them out for lot of them because i knew
Load More Replies...In addition, we need to advocate for mental health parity. Speaking as someone who is bipolar, I don't understand why we can't have mental health coverage to the same extent that we have physical health coverage. If you don't have a mental health issue you probably know someone who does so it's important to fight to make treatment available for everyone.
A lot of parity laws have been passed, they're just not enforced. If you are not getting adequate coverage I encourage you to make a complaint to the insurance commissioner. Insurance companies have been getting away with this crap for too long. If you really want to fight it look up your national and state parity laws. Some apply only to certain diagnoses eg. OCD, MDD, Scizophrenia etc. But a lot of work has been done on parity.
Load More Replies...I would give almost anything to not have mental health issues. My illness has literally ruined my life. I have caused pain and suffering to everyone I love. I have lost jobs. I have been homeless. And I can confirm that, at no point, did I ever consider myself cute, funny or quirky. So yeah, this post is bang on the money.
I'm trying to cut out mental health related words from my vocab, when used as insults. Things like "psycho", as mentioned here, or "idiot" or "moron" or "crazy" or - there are a LOT of them. And I still pretty frequently mess up. But even trying is opening my eyes to how much we vilify mental health issues even in casual conversation. We should, as a society, do better.
I once had a serious panic attack during a school assembly. We're talking vertigo, nausea, racing heart, hyperventilating. The whole nine yards. I don't understand why people would want that.
Mental health is expensive and most people can't afford it. I know because I'm one of them.
Because we've been Programmed by a "HE-Man, 'only-the-"strong"-survive-so-weakness-'deserves'-PUNISHMENT society, hell-bent on othering anyone that dares admit to needing Help.
Reaching out for help can either cost serious money or it's free but lands you with someone crazier than you who shouldn't be practicing. If anyone has any solutions for this, please speak freely.
People with treated mental illness are often more rational than the sane.
I swear that's the truth! My son has schizophrenia and sometimes I think he's just quietly taking it all in. Biding his time .... no but really he does seem much saner than most! He's very intelligent. And a sweetheart.
Load More Replies...Actually, people attack the mentally ill on a daily basis. Calling them dangerous and violent instead of sick and needing help.
Don't trust the professionals to want to help, or anyone to be able to. There is help, but there's also a lot of taking advantage.
These are all obvious things that only idiots choose to deny. So idiots. That's nothing new.
True...when you are feeling alone and in pain...just remember that there are human beings out there who can help you redirect...to your wholesome place. I am one...and there are many others.
This ties into the other one about blood family not always being the best for you. We have "bonus" kids that ended up with us because of mental health issues, both their own and their parent's. Getting help and support should be everyone's right. No one deserves this kind of suffering and pain.
Well, I have bipolar disorder and anxiety. While I agree that it's not just a phase, a person isn't their illness. When you see bipolar characters in movies for example they are non stop chaos. And in real life it's used as a random insult to some people when they make a mistake (even if they have no mental issues at all). But many of them (me included) can go years without any episodes. I can have a normal life with a family, work, children etc. It's not constantly present and when it's not I like to enjoy being "normal" and not be labeled as someone with mental illness (sadly there is lot of stigma around it). The anxiety part is harder (for me) but still relatively functioning. I also don't think you have to be dead on serious with it all the time, yes it can be crippling and horrible but I still joke about it from time to time, humor and perspective helps. It's not "cute" but it's also not "crazy", it just is.
Thank you. I have so many patients who are devastated when they get a diagnosis. I'm like look- this just helps us know how to treat it. Doctors, Lawyers, Judges, are walking around with these diagnoses. A relatively normal life is possible if we get you the right treatment. People think it means you have to be totally out of control or something. Nope. Just people, going about their lives. You take your heart medicine, they take their bipolar medication and go to therapy. Of course there's a spectrum and bad days. But I wish people didn't think of mental illness diagnoses as world ending. For many people life does go on. You just learn to manage it.
Load More Replies...I had a friend was like that, she hates me now and I don’t know why
I don't think this is the right place for that comment.
Load More Replies...Toxic relatives... Just because they have your blood doesn't mean they are good for you or that you have to stay there.
it's okay to cut family members out of your life, you don't owe them anything. if your relationship with them is making your life worse in any way, bye bye! the fact that you're related to them means nothing if they're not a good person. don't be afraid 💖
That a majority of us are completely utterly ordinary people, and that’s okay.
Love is not enough. Loving someone enough will not ensure your relationship will be successful. Loving your child enough will not ensure they love you back or that they live a good life.
With love, you still need trust, communication, and respect (at least)
There isn't someone for everyone and some of us will pass away alone. Not everyone will reproduce and carry on their line.
Slavery still exists in many places of the world.
Why the Lego picture for this? Why not a child working in the diamond mines or numerous big corp sweatshops?
That sometimes comeuppance is a myth and evil can triumph. That a huge factor in life is not hard work but luck.
I really hope Putin doesn’t ultimately triumph. Even reality must realise that’s just too much.
One Accident or tragedy can completely flip your life upside down.
Firsthand experience. My dad had an accident when I was 18 years old. Massive brain injury. He was bedridden, in diapers, with a feeding tube, at home in our front room for the next 21 years. He died a year ago and I can guarantee I have no idea where my life went in those 21 years. I still live at home. And I still miss my dad.
The memory of most people’s existence will be completely forgotten sooner than you think, even by their own families. I can’t even tell you the names of my great-great grandparents
I know some of mine only because of the genealogy search my folks did. But I had no clue my mom had cousins and aunts.
Just because something lasts a long time - like a marriage, or a job - doesn't mean it's any good at all. There are lots of reasons that things don't end, some are very bad.
That you can also alter your memories to believe your own lie if you think about it enough
You will lose everyone you've ever known and cared about - either to the end of the relationship, your passing, or theirs. We only borrow the people we love for a short time.
That's why I try to show as much love as possible to the people I care about. Nothing lasts forever except memories.
Elon Musk has the liquid assets to fund the UNs world hunger program.
He'd rather buy Twitter.
The problem is more complicated than simply providing food, entire economies and systems need to be put into place so that people and societies can support themselves moving forwards. Food aid is a short term solution to a long term problem, which doesn't mean it isn't necessary but it's not a long term solution.
Most new houses are overpriced trash.
I totally agree...A friend of mine once said »cars, houses and women...only with a past » I laughed at the time but have come to agree on houses...old houses have soul, charm and space....ok,I need a new roof but am willing to put up with the works..and price just for the pleasure of living in an oldie..
The number of innocent people in prison.
People say "Don't commit crimes and you'll not have problems with getting arrested." They have no idea how common mistaken identity, being at the right place at the wrong time, lazy jurors can ruin your life.
The clothes you wear and buy for $50 really cost close to $5 and are manufactured by slaves.
How livestock is treated
I think about this all too often. The animals are handled so roughly and farmers think they can't feel pain. My dad ( I don't really associate with him much) admitted to me he punched a pig in the head after the pig tried biting him or pushing him. Must've been a reason why the pig did that. My dad said "Pigs are tough. It didn't hurt him." How would he know? Just because an animal doesn't say "OW" and we can't see their tears that well, and they don't cry like we do (well, they do but people hear it as regular animal noises) doesn't mean they don't feel pain nor express pain. Plus, how baby animals are ripped apart from their parents to be slaughtered for tender young meat.
Your favored politician isn't your savior. Nor anyone else's.
I swear politicians are that kid that asked you for some Soda-Licious and pleaded with "I'll be you're friend" then says "Syke" when you give them some.
That being overweight is seriously detrimental to your health.
Yes, but being overly concerned about weight is seriously detrimental to people's mental health. Just try to keep yourself healthy and don't try to police the weight of others. edit: yall, I just replied to a lot of people in the comments, but I just wanted to say this: while this topic doesn't relate to me specifically, I've seen many people (especially women) endure a lot of hate about their bodies. if you're going to comment something about how you think everyone should look a certain way or be a certain weight, please just don't. society's beauty standards are ridiculous, and you're not responsible for the health of others unless you're a medical professional. please, please, treat people with kindness.
There is no such thing as unconditional love. There is always something you can do that will make someone, anyone, turn their back on you
Working yourself to death to the benefit of wealth hoarders is admirable and expected, and wanting to exist without struggle is lazy and shameful.
This is a tiny part of the reason I work in health and social care (UK). Of course someone, somewhere is profiting, but mostly I'm helping people in need and that's cool with me.
Gen X is in serious trouble when it comes to paying for retirement.
Things changed between my parents' generation and mine (GenX). No more company pensions, just Social Security and whatever we managed to save. My daughter (Millennial) has it even worse, which is why I'm paying off my house as fast as possible, so she'll have it mortgage-free, and why I have a huge life insurance policy to her benefit. Meanwhile, my parents left me with their debt.
Privacy basically doesn't exist anymore
No but I don't think we're really focused on as much as we think. Like when you're in a store, like Walmart. Ordinary shoppers can go in and if they're not doing anything suspicious likely they're merely glanced at for the most part, just like everyone else you pass by you're not intently focused on. There's just too many people in the world and neither of us are that special.
Under the right circumstances, anyone is capable of anything.
I don't believe this. People have been willing to die instead of doing something that is morally wrong. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was one of them.
That our memories are subjective, full of errors and patches in order to maintain a balance in our understanding of events. Some memories are even false and some memories are so different from other people present at the same events that actions, reactions and outcomes could be entirely opposite from each other. Humans assume that memories are correct all of the time, however they are prone to errors and even change over time.
I hate this. This is what gaslighting manipulators use on people. Under normal circumstances we're pretty good with our memories but we retain the information we deem relevant and most interesting. Traumatic, big events, or exciting times, anything that elicits a major reaction may get fuzzy or exaggerated in our minds. Of course an observer is going to have a different take on events than someone who was involved in the action. It doesn't mean one is wrong and the other is right. It just means 2 people have different perspectives.
Horrible things happen everyday, and the ones we hear about are largely a reflection of self-interest.
Well most media serve an agenda, and that is reflected in what they show. A few years ago in Australia there was a terrorist knife attack where one man died. During the constant coverage about it, i was watching the banner headlines running across the bottom of the screen reporting 70 people killed in terrorist attack in somalia, 20 in syria and so on. That's always been the case , one death is a tragedy, a thousand is a statistic...
Alcohol has me by the balls, makes my life worse, puts undue stress on my family, and will probably be the death of me. But in my mind, I find a way to justify it every day.
Alcohol is not the problem. It is a symptom of the problem, which lies within you. I speak from experience. Clean and sober 14 years. We can and do recover.
Hoarders usually just think they need everything or refuse to acknowledge the mountain of garbage is a problem. It’s really quite depressing to see family and friends who are in this situation.
Hoarding is a mental disorder and usually will be rooted in some sort of trauma in the past.It is not just collecting on steroids...As long as mental health is not a priority for government it will mostly go unnoticed and provide entertainment on tv programs such as Hoarders and the rest of us can sit back, pull our skirts away and feel good about our tidy homes. It is truly sad
The police in the US aren't there to protect people, just property. They have no obligation to protect you.
Please excuse me as I go look at cute hedgehog photos. This was sadder than I thought it would be.
"If you ignore them, they'll leave you alone." Told this while I was bullied in school. Once actually ignored it for three months. Big shock. They didn't leave me alone.
Well I certainly didn’t expect to feel like I got punched in the gut...
Loving someone doesn’t mean they love you back, it also doesn’t mean you have to be “in love” with them. Loving someone means so many things, I love my ex-partner still, but I don’t want to marry them. I just care about them so much and would be devastated if anything happen to them. I love my friends, but I don’t want to date them, I love them because they’re my friends and mean so much to me.
