Found In The Dumpster Tied In A Trash Bag. What A Sweet Soul As Well. Poor Thing
Now I am thinking about all the ones that weren't found 😨 Flipping evil people :(
Load More Replies...My little rescue cat Pickles was found the same way, half dead in a bin, with cigarette burns on her tummy. I've had her for 11 years now and she's the sweetest little fluffball. I'm not religious but there's a special place in hell for these arseholes 🤬🤬🤬
II would throw previous owner into dumpster. Who could do this to poor kitty?
I agree and make sure they are in a closed trash bag also. Nothing but a P.O.S.
Load More Replies...Idk about the person in the background on their phone, but I would be cuddling that adorable softy kitty🥰
Might be calling a shelter or booking a vet appointment, which is more helpful than cuddles atm.
Load More Replies...Live Animal In Petco Dumpster
I found this poor baby last night in the compactor at Petco in Alexandria, La!!! I really pray that they accidentally threw him out as there was bedding in a trash bag in the bin as well. If they did it on purpose, they’re disgusting.
@CR what tf? How could you? It's just a cute hamster (I think)
Load More Replies...Yes some sadistic person applied, interviewed, went through training, and took a minimum wage job cleaning up animal feces just to kill this critter into a compactor. Sure, petco's business plan is to pay for animals just to kill them needlessly. OBVIOUSLY this was an accident.
I have heard, with little research on my part mind you, that Petco does have a bad reputation for throwing out animals like hamsters and especially fish. I could absolutely be wrong, but I've heard this before. :( Really hope I'm wrong!!
Load More Replies...Sometimes when they're cold they look like they're dead. Probably didn't look to be breathing and didn't respond to pokes. I'd expect there was no malice in this one, just a lucky little furball
I very highly doubt a pet store known for taking such good care of animals would do something like that on purpose.
Found On Top Of Someone's Garbage
I was walking my dog with my fiance and we both stopped and said "what's that?". I realized it was an enameled cast iron and I love cast iron. Immediately knew this was a $150+ pan.
Maybe the thought they ruined it? Whatever was cooked on was very burned.
Two rounds of oven cleaner and some bleach to fix the discoloration and it's good as new.
It took me a few years to understand just how valuable these could be. I never tossed one, but I did burn one badly. But, luckily, I knew how to bring it back and I still have it. 30+ years at this point.
I cleaned a cast iron frying pan by putting it in the oven and turning on the clean cycle. Hours later it was cleaned down to the iron blue color. I seasoned it several times and now I use it.
No one teaches the basics of home ec any more. How to cook, clean, manage a household. Used to be taught in every high school .
The other people were too lazy to clean it! You found a real treasure because you were not lazy!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Maybe they left it on top in case someone wanted it. I once found a stainless steel, copper bottom fry pan as big as a wok. I had it for years until the handle broke off and I couldn't find a welder to fix it.
If you take a moment and think about how often you throw things away each day; you might realize how much we rely on the trash can. From food scraps to packaging, a lot ends up in our bins.
On average, each person generates around 0.74 kilograms of waste per day, but depending on where you live, that number can range anywhere from 0.11 to a staggering 4.54 kilograms.
10 Days Ago, I Found A Schwinn Delmar Frame In A Dumpster, And Gave It To My Neighbor. Yesterday, He Showed Me His Little 'Fix Up'
I worked in the bicycle industry for 30 years. Some of my high-tech buddies would sneer at these things, but I told them - "That's what love looks like as a bicycle. Shut it."
I Finished That Stool I Found
I remember my mother having one like this that sat beside the stove. Many hours were spent sitting on that stool chatting about life as one or the other of us cooked
My grandma has one of these she's using it for my baby cousin right now.
This Should Be Criminal…
Taking some to a group home & woman’s shelter tomorrow, keeping a few for care bags my daughter & I put together for homeless people we come across.
I know a lot of people like to blame the stores for this, but having worked in retail for 40+ years, I can tell you that a lot of times it is the manufacturer who is responsible for this kind of waste. Many retailers are contractually obligated to dispose of unsold product rather than donate it (they were probably supposed to destroy it too, but rarely do they take the time to do that). Some corporations are so greedy that they'd rather see the product destroyed than given away for free, thereby possibly endangering a future sale. Welcome to late-stage capitalism!
That's why it needs to be a law, then all businesses are on a level pegging.
Load More Replies...Great Find and Disgusting Store Policies that they Just Toss Good Usable Things in the Trash Bins!
sometimes stores have merchandise that makers or distributors change and if they don't have outlet when new packaging color or style store gets credit but has to trash it sometimes co policy forbids employees from taking . but they can tip others and its ok to dumpster dive most places usually it gets banned because some pully stuff out and leave a mess
Maybe the woman and the child perished in an accident, and the surviving spouse/parent didn't want the reminders.
And they needed multiple sizes? And never, ever opened and used them?
Load More Replies...In 2023 alone, the world generated 2.1 billion metric tons of municipal solid waste—just imagine that for a second. You could quite literally cover the earth with that waste! Imagine if all that trash were spread out evenly; it would be enough to blanket the planet in layers of garbage.
Now, if that sounds like a lot, brace yourself, because it's projected to skyrocket to 3.8 billion tons by 2050. That's nearly double the amount of waste.
$200 All Going To My Local Shelter
All good through the next year, so sad to see it in the trash.
Honestly, don't dumpster dive food. Many times, they are tossed because of recalls due to one thing or another. You may be doing more harm than good. Go online and check the code to make sure it's okay to donate, give away. Same goes for cosmetics. Just a side note for those in the U.S. Purina also owns Taco Bell.
Purina is owned by Nestle Purina Petcare., a subsidiary of Nestle that only runs pet care brands. Taco Bell is owned by Yum! Brands, who only run fast food restaurants.
Load More Replies...My local shelter - I no longer have pets - I set up an Amazon subscription for treats - cats and dogs - as an anonymous gift. Every other week, $67 worth of relatively wholesome snax shows up, and no name on the receipt.
If it had not been expired then it was contaminated. They don't throw unexpired, good food out for no reason. I little common sense goes a long way.
Likely a Store Disposed of it For not Selling Fast Enough!!Maybe if they Lowered their Greedy Prices People Could Afford to Buy it!!
Hope the previous post is correct, but this bounty is not on the bad list! If not, and this is all good stuff, well done!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s actually pretty bad in terms of ingredients and nutritional values. You definitely pay for the brand and their marketing, not for the quality / health of your animal (not sure about the 2 bags in the back, this brand I don’t know)

Why are they drinking monsters energy drinks after midnight?! Gremlin vibes😱
They're raccoons. Doesn't that say "gremlin" regardless? I love raccoons 😍
Load More Replies...Thank you for clarifying. Tired of the "wild animal babies are cute so let's take them home and raise them" posts... just let them go back home to momma, she can take care of them better than you can :) Or call a wildlife rehabilitator if momma isn't available.
Had the same thing happen recently at my store. One of my employees went to take out the trash and told me there was a baby raccoon stuck in the bottom of the dumpster. She was worried it might be sick or injured, but he put a shipping pallet in there as a ladder, and thankfully it was gone when I checked the next day.
Poor wee ones! I used to do that when my former apartment's bin had raccoons in it that couldn't get out. Put either a board or something so they could climb out and run run run! So darn cute. I love raccoons and Toronto has oodles of them, lololol.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I Saw A Box For A $2800 Espresso Machine On The Sidewalk In Trash Day… Kicked It, And Realized It Wasn’t Empty. And Inside Was A $1000 Espresso Machine Of The Same Brand
We've got the posh one! (My brother was getting a new one) (yes he's a coffee monster)
Perhaps the newer one was a gift, and they didn't need the other? If you read the whole post, the one the OP *rescued* was a not in the best condition. Per OP: "It was in good shape, on the outside. The inside was a mess. This thing was /well/ used! It also required a proprietary wrench to take it apart." It took a few things & some elbow grease to get it fixed up.
Load More Replies...Anybody who has a shot-a-day Charbucks habit, and does a little arithmetic to realize the machine will pay for itself in less than a year. You'll probably get better coffee out of it, too.
Load More Replies...Take it! We literally got the same one, for over 10 years now. Jura is an amazing company.
AWESOME! But MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN, I can only imagine how bad your toes hurt. Mine hurt just by reading this.
However, not all waste comes from our homes. In fact, there are many different types of waste out there. For instance, hazardous chemical waste like industrial chemicals, paints, and certain cleaning products could threaten our health and the environment if disposed of recklessly. They can be incredibly harmful, even in small amounts.
Found A Giant Nutcracker Head. Left It In The Bathroom For My Husband To Find When He Gets Up To Pee
Found an update on how OP's husband reacted. UPDATE on husband's reaction... He woke up at 3 am to pee and walked to the bathroom. He saw it before he turned on the light and thought it was part of a dream because it was so huge. He told me he was "fkn creeped out" in the moment until he turned on the light. He peed in the backyard. Now we're gonna use it to mess with my husband's ex girlfriend. We're going to sneak it into her house. She lives alone. He and I are friends with her so we will be able to get into her house easily. But she also collects nutcrackers so I think after she gets over the WTF factor, she'll be super happy with it.
Hope OP has something that captures audio + video when he sees it, in the middle of the night. :)
This Wasn't Even All Of The Plants
I don't have a car, but I would have taken as many as I could and probably broken my back trying to take some more.
Why don't Stores offer them to folks for $1.00 instead of Throwing them Out?
Check to make sure they don't have spider mites or other creepy crawlies.
My supermarket sells lots of cut flowers, but they're expensive. I should check their dumpster for expired flowers.
But Wait! There'sh More!
There's 27 Nike and Under Armor bags here. All of them still have their tags. Most have random embroidery on the front but besides that, they're clean and in perfect condition.
That is the trouble with club/school gear - once it's embroidered or otherwise marked, it is worthless to anyone not connected with the school. And often it's really good quality gear too. That's why I don't ask my dancers to get anything apart from a T-shirt - I want them to use their bags outside of dance as well if they choose.
When I was working in Africa, I'd see a lot of kids wearing gear from US sports teams. At first I just figured that I those teams were popular there. But I later learned that a lot of that gear is dumped in the African markets because they cannot be sold in the US. For instance, you will find shirts that say X Team was the Super Bowl Champions, but they are actually the team that lost. The company prints champion shirts for both teams so they can quickly sell them in the US, then sells the losing teams shirts at cost in East African countries.
Load More Replies...Enough for an entire classroom; I hope these were donated to kids in need.
Depending on the material embroidery can be removed carefully with a seam ripper. Usually you can't even tell it was there unless it's been on for a long time, in which case there might be fading on the exposed part.
Came here to say the same thing!! Even if you can see the stitching holes from where the embroidery was, you could cover it with an iron-on patch or embroidery that is specific to the owner of the backpack (favourite Pokemon or something)
Load More Replies...It is possible to remove the embroidery. Lots of patience required. Voice of experience speaking.
So many foster kids could use these--they often have to move homes with their stuff in a garbage bag. Donate your unused luggage for them too.
Some Shops just take in TOO MUCH MONEY Obviously! These could have been Donated to Schools for Kids without Pack Sacks Because their Parents Couldn't Afford them!
Send them to NC. Victims of enormous storm damage frequently have absolutely nothing left. They don't care if the bags, etc. have a school name on it.
Then there’s the growing problem of electronic waste. With the rise of new technology, we’re throwing out more gadgets than ever before. The world produces around 50 million tons of e-waste each year. From old phones and laptops to broken TVs and kitchen appliances, these items are becoming a huge environmental issue.
Update On Imac Find
I found this last week, what I thought was just a Mac display in the dumpster when I was moving. Plugged it in and it needed a mouse and keyboard to connect. Fast forward to this morning as I connected some that I ordered on Amazon and it popped right on and asked me to setup as new iMac, only had to connect with my Apple ID! Looked it up earlier this week and it’s a 2021 iMac, so crazy someone would just leave in the dumpster in recovery mode, but new iMac for me!
I'm moving right now and I have a whole pile of old tech I'm planning to donate to Free Geek.
Where I live it's illegal to throw out electronics in the regular trash--you either have to take them to a collection site or wait for a scheduled pickup day. Lucky find!
I always pulled my hard drive out before recycling my PCs and used them as external hard drives or destroyed them. By removing the hard drive, your personal data remains private. Side note: just read an article that your cars may be spying on your sex life. Your vehicles, and there's a list, are collecting data on every move you make with your car.
Found In Neighbor’s Bagster
Good grief these are fantastic! There's ALWAYS a resell on these regardless of the condition. Fantastic find 👍
I recall Craftsman having a lifetime warranty and in a lot of cases, they just replace with new. Worth looking at.
It’s a giant trash bag “think half the size of a dumpster” that’s intended to be used for smallish Reno projects. You just call to have it picked up when you’re done with it
Load More Replies...Someone Threw Away This Huge Pack Of Toilet Paper!!!! Yes It’s The Cheapy Office Kind But I Literally Have None Right Now And It Is Such A Blessing 🤣
Wife hollered at me (custodian here). School changed all toilet paper holders to new ones that have rolls that don't have cores, just wound tighter to the center. So...all the "old" TP we had, ended up at home. 20 or so rolls. She wasn't laughing when we didn't have to buy any for 3-4 months.
Some folks still Have Too Much Money & yes They Walk Amongst us The Dirt Poor!!Great Find!
Is it not written? It is far better to have and not need, than it is to need and not have.
On a more natural note, we also have organic waste, which includes all sorts of biodegradable materials like food scraps, paper, and even some types of plastic. Instead of tossing these items in the trash, they can be composted to create nutrient-rich soil, which is great for growing new plants.
Totally Pristine Box Set Just Sitting In The Recycling Bin At My University. I’m Amazed
College move out day can be pretty sweet. Golf clubs, furniture, grills...
During my college move out days there were always couches in the trash. They were usually in good condition.
Load More Replies...Missed the old Harry Potter covers, they are so much better then the new ones.
This may be from someone who has decided that they don't like Rowling any more (on principle), or someone who has "found religion" (these books are "devil worship" don't you know 🙄) Either way, good score.
Probably someone who didn't appreciate Rowling's transphobic rants. I have boycotted anything JK Rowling.
I’m Shaking Because I Feel Like I Did Something Illegal!
Got out the shower, looked out my balcony and saw someone had these by the curb. I’ve never run to my car faster!
I'd dearly love a pair of these, they are such a price though, OP is a lucky bug indeed
I live in India, and they're cheap as heck here, want me to throw a couple in the post? :))
Load More Replies...People always put stuff they don't want by our dumpster when they move out. It almost always finds a new home. Same with anything my parents put out at the curb by their house. It's usually gone within hours. I'm all for reusing perfectly good items.
Tonight’s Find
I have this chess set! The only downside is that the gold and silver pieces look almost the same in certain light, making it difficult to figure out which pieces are yours or your opponents.
A dab of black fingernail polish on the heads of the silver ones would fix that problem.
Load More Replies...We often forget about things that could be recycled or reused, like old furniture or household appliances. With a little creativity, household waste like an outdated lamp could find new life, reducing waste and giving us unique, repurposed items instead of more junk for the landfill.
Found This While Dog Walking. I Have No Clue Why Somebody Would Throw Out A New Cast Iron Pan
They probably didn't. I'm guessing with a lot of these items people accidentally threw them away and were not aware of what they were doing for whatever reason. The people that found them just got lucky to be on the receiving end of the discovery. I know I've throw away a few very important things in my life and didn't realize it until it was too late. I think that's the deal with some of these items being found.
It could be. But also people throw out a LOT of perfectly good stuff. Signed, someone who grew up in a college town where the students would throw out EVERYTHING at the end of every school year, and dumpster diving could be pretty impressive.
Load More Replies...Some people don't know their value or how to care for them. I rescued several rusty ones from a garage sale and made them perfect. I really should rehome them.
I realize this is a one off, but while walking my dogs, I found what look to be a very expensive knife. I tossed it because it scared me. What was it doing out on the street?
Who knows? You see all kinds of things. When I moved in to my house, it came with a 12-inch Sabatier chef's knife. It's a really nice carbon steel blade.

I have a brother going to collage soon that will probably appreciate not having to spend 150$ for a new one.
When folks are moving, the darndest nice, useable things get tossed. Cars are sold cheap!
I think it's a kegerator. Definitely useful for a college student!
Unbelievable! The amazing things people cavalierly throw away. Disgusting too.🤑😡
So, we can do our part to minimize harm to the environment by reusing items in our homes instead of tossing them out. For instance, instead of throwing away glass jars, you can repurpose them as storage containers for spices or even as decorative flower vases. You could turn old shirts into cleaning rags.
1970s Togo Sofa Set Found On "Large Items" Garbage Pick Up Day
Still can't believe it, especially because it's super clean with no rips, discoloration, tears and most importantly, it has no bed bugs haha! I left them outside for a close inspection and I vacuumed them, steam cleaned all the creases and folds and then did a preventive treatment with a product I got from a local exterminator!
For those who are not familiar, Togo sofas were launched by Ligne Roset in 1973 but are still produced and are in high demand.. a new set like this would cost north of $15 000cad with a long waitlist. It's definitely my best find ever!
They look so comfy, but I would never have the guts to put them in my home. Could be infested with something.
That's why OP got a treatment from an exterminator as well as checked them

WOWOWOW. Beautiful and VALUABLE. MidCentury design is hard to beat. A+++++++

I am insanely jealous. Look at that detail. Mid Century and Mission are my two favorite styles.
In 2020, a staggering $252 billion was spent just to manage the world’s waste. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When you add in the hidden costs—things like pollution, health problems, and the impact on our climate from improper waste disposal—the true cost was $361 billion.
I Got 7 Kids So This Was A Score
I know which store these came from, and I will just say, all of this product should have been shipped back to the warehouse for credit after the holiday. Somebody at that store was being lazy.
This type of things happens all over, all the time. I watch several dumpster divers on Youtube because I find it fascinating the things they can find. It's interesting and sad all at the same time.

Quite a long while ago, my friends and I would dive the college dumpsters after the students moved out. Most were flying home, so that meant tossing anything from clothing, health & beauty products, lamps, chairs to unopened food. We'd load up the vans and pick ups and bring our treasure to the local survival center. What the center couldn't take, like opened bottles of shampoo, we handed out directly to people living rough.
Follow Up On The Lil Pig That Followed Me Home And Knocked On My Door
We all need to do our part to manage waste better. These posts remind us that many items don’t need to end up in the trash; if they’re still in good condition, they can be reused or repurposed! Found This 65” TV In The Dumpster In My Neighborhood
It wouldn’t power on. Took the motherboard out and baked it @ 400°F for 10 minutes. Works perfect now. Apparently this model has a solder issue that is solved by reflowing the solder in an over.
I have seen it work I have done it to fix a motherboard in an old printer. It may not work all the time but it might.

If the problem is a known issue with cold solder joints, fluxing the board and reflowing it would fix the issue.

"feed" is a generous word, but definitely a donation for a shelter house or somewhere for people who can't afford snacks
Load More Replies...Thank the wonderful US Government for this. It is illegal for stores in the US to sell food beyond its expiration or "best by" date. Frito Lay is a direct service company, meaning they deliver their own product and issue credits for expired product. Sales reps are supposed to take product back to Frito Lay warehouse, but often they will just dump it in the store's dumpster. Frustrating, because most of these chips would be still be edible for at least six months past the "best by" date.
I work in a gift shop, and they frequently give us the expired chips after they write them off, now that we're not getting them from the chip company directly. Back then, we gave them back to the company that delivered them, and that company in turn distributed the chips to Las Vegas area shelters. Now we just take them home or throw them out, since we get them from commissary, andthey don't want them back.
Load More Replies...Always Check Your Cards
I keep my gift cards in a wallet-sized coin purse and I write the remaining balance on a post-it and stick it to the card so I know how much is left on the card. Also, some of them are refillable, but store cashiers don't always know that and take the card away
Load More Replies...Once in Las Vegas I was at the Mandalay Bay playing Roulette and I looked down and saw 2 $100.00 bills that someone had lost.
You cannot tell me that the design on that card is not a dïck and bälls using the Amazon logo. Well played, art department.
Laundry Detergent Score!!!
That's beyond effed up that an establishment would throw away such a necessary item that could have been EASILY donated to help the less fortunate... and the detergent too.
Another case where these products were likely recalled due to contamination or potential carcinogens. Although where I live it would also be illegal to just throw these in the trash--they have to be properly store and picked up by a hazardous waste disposal company. (Probably the Cocoa Pebbles are just expired.)

Little back story/ I find things people are throwing out, clean them, and flip it for profit, we were moving out of our apartment and the last day I saw this and asked my girlfriend if she knew what a SNOO was she flipped when I told her what I had found. We picked it up took it home, got some swaddles to go with it to be able to test it and it worked perfect!! I took the entire thing apart cleaned it head to toe very thoroughly since I knew I could flip it for a big amount I’ve never made before on a single sell, I have it listed now and should sell between $600-$800.
It's a bassinet that automatically responds by rocking/vibration when your baby gets fussy. They're super expensive.
I rented the Snoo for my youngest and it was a game changer! We all got much better sleep, returning to work was wayyy easier, and 2 years later she still is a better sleeper than my oldest, who has a hard time falling asleep. That thing is 100% worth every penny!

Also filled and rolled over a shopping cart of instant noodle soups to the Motel 6 many houseless people live in and stay near with a free sign.
There’s also another 2x3 box of coffee and cookie mix to fill the LFP again.
We have more and more of these sharing shelves in our area in Germany and I like it so much. Since I save for foodsharing i have a foldable box on my fence to put in what I want people to take. There are also several telegram groups to share saved or other foods like apples from your garden . I think this is fantastic. I still have to buy much food but the saved food dictates what to eat during the week and you have to become creative. And also more curious about food itself and when it goes bad (f.e. Joghurt is good even months after the printed date. You should look, sniff and taste first of course to verify but I always did this)

Cats Eat For Free This Month
Whoever threw this out should have donated it to a shelter. Also the finder
I would always be cautious about pet food. Usually when big bags like that get thrown away, it's a recall due to potential contamination.
My cats would snub that brand. :( They're fancy feast fiends + nothing else!
Kitty Crack. Vet says they like FF because it's full of sugar. You know, just like the best breakfast cereals.

The packaged food is probably past its expiration date. Fresh produce is a little trickier--determining when it is no longer fit to sell is largely subjective. But none of what I can see in this picture looks remotely spoiled, so... I got nothing.
Please tell me were you find a hall like this? A mix of fresh and boxed items, is it all bagged together? Strange.

Found This Heavy Sturdy Shelf In The Trash Today
Looks like it was probably a display table of some sort for a store. Not a typical height for home use, and you couldn't use it as a dinner table because of the base. But nice to display curios or as a bookshelf.

Unbelievable Waste. Grabbed As Much As I Could But Sad To Walk Away From All This
That's probably spoiled grocery store food because their coolers lost power. Not smart to eat. Happened at my job. Trust me I learned the hard way. It's thrown away for a reason.
Was gonna say, that much cold goods being thrown out at once, that's a refrigeration failure. Not a good idea to eat it

Found This Awesome Jacket In A Dumpster Today! Judging From The Patches And The Brand, It’s An Authentic Nasa Windbreaker From The 80s!
The top mission patch is from STS-51-G in June of 1985. Al-Saud was the first Arab, the first Muslim, and the first member of a royal family to fly in space. The bottom patch is a bit more somber. Spartan Halley was a payload mission aboard the space shuttle to capture the UV spectrum of a comet. It was to be deployed from the shuttle Challenger, which exploded during launch (STS-51-L).
A Quality Score. Why Would Someone Throw This Away? (College Town)yes I Washed It First. Lol

My Wife And I Found A Pallet Full Next To The Dumpster That Said Free. On Closer Expectation The Sodas Are 2 Days Past Expiration 35 Cases Of 35 Cans Lol
Wife for scale. I love how she's posing on it like she's the new Dr Pepper model. ^_^
It will still be safe to drink, but canned soda will typically start to go flat about 2-3 months after the expiration date. But if I tried to drink that much Dr Pepper in 3 months, I'd have much bigger problems than flat soda.

Like many things on here there's no market for them. People don't even want them for free. I don't want them, you don't want them.
Yup. I can't give away a twin bed, a table that sits 8 and stuffed animals that have never been played with by children. They were gifts due to the fact that my favorite animals are tigers. I've kept them for over 25 years and used them as Christmas decor but I'm over them. They all look brand new.

So much waste. I am glad some countries are passing laws that demand shops to give the food to food banks and the like. There are also websites where shops can post what they are going to throw away for people to collect and distribute.
In the USA this is tricky. If anybody gets sick, there will be a lawsuit. It's why fast food places would rather throw away their leftovers, than give it away. They are afraid of litigation.
Load More Replies...I took out the paper recycling here in Prague and found the bin half full of bundled newspapers and magazines. I started to grab some for the fire and discovered a treasure trove of Czech(oslovak) curiosities. They included a couple of newspapers from the Russian invasion of 1968; a nearly complete run of the first 100 issues of Reflex, a political magazine; some scouting magazines from the brief period in 1969 when the scouts were revived before being banned again by the Communists; and various other bits & pieces. I guess someone died and their hoarded papers were just tossed out. I saved a bunch of the most interesting-looking stuff though there was far too much to keep it all. Pretty cool find though.
It's disgusting how much we throw away, especially food. What, I ask, is wrong with donating stuff you don't want to a reputable charity?
where i'm from i found a FB grpup called "FreeCycle" where people put up free stuff they don't use anymore. Feels more humanethan dumpster diving for people needing anything. When i first moved away on my own i had no chairs in my apartment and found some perfectly good ones there, the lady that put them up just got new ones and didn't want to hussle to sell the old ones.Pretty cool
I would be worried about any of the frozen and refrigerated food, that is just too risky!
My mother volunteers at a free community library. They accept used books, but people use the book donations to just throw away whatever they don't want. She once got a box of 20 dog collars (which she gave to the animal shelter), but occasionally she gets some expensive stuff, and often that stuff is given to me. From the library I have a $500 projector (which I use to watch movies outside with my kids in the summer), a nice set of shelves, a great oscillating fan, a Dyson vacuum cleaner (I needed to fix it and replace the battery for $30), and lots of toys for the kids. Magni-Tiles seem to be popular to throw away. A lot of the stuff is pure garbage though. In fact, some people have left actual food waste in the donation repository.
My friend lives in an upscale condo building. Every week her son checks out the trash . He says you wouldn't believe the brand new, valuable items that rich people just toss out with no thought. Too lazy to be bothered to donate?
Do people live in places where this is legal? Here, you would be find if caught dumpster diving. I would love to find and donate (or possibly keep) some things like this.
Unfortunately, my supermarket has a lock on their dumpster.
