Shy Shelter Dog Can’t Hold Back Emotions When He Realizes He’s Been Adopted From A High-Kill Shelter

Since November, Benny, an 8-month-old pit bull, has been on death-row like all other unfortunate abandoned dogs at Carson Animal Care Center, a high-kill shelter in Gardena, California. For weeks nobody wanted to take this shy but sweet doggie home, until a miracle happened.

On December 10th, Benny’s life was spared. He was noticed by a sweet family who decided to adopt him. When the pooch was about to be taken out of the cage, he was so confused and happy, he could barely stay still.

Sadly, way too many kind-hearted dogs spend their last days behind bars and end up being euthanised instead of finding a loving home. Visit this site to know more about how you can help them.

Watch the video below for Benny’s heart-melting reaction.

It's refreshing to see the article didn't try and shame the shelter for euthanizing animals like so many do online. A heart warming and breaking story... we should be shaming the people who let their dogs loose or abandon them instead of the shelters who break their backs trying to provide for them.

Blame the owners that breed their dogs and take no responsibility for the pups that are brought into this cruel world Only 10 dogs out of hundred dogs will get a forever home, the rest will end up in shelters or dumped on thje streets. To breed your dog rates up with rapist and murderers in my book. Disgusting to allow puppies to come into this world when Millions of dogs are put down in shelters every year. . Spay and Neuter your pets people this is the only thing that will stop the killing at shelters.. The public is to blame . Enforce spay and neuter laws its so simple .

What a sweet dog. He keeps sitting and wanting to please. I only wish they'd gone to Benny earlier instead of hanging back and filming, but thank goodness they adopted him. Since we moved to the country, we've had three dogs, all through the SPCA. One of them was one of my best friends in my life, and I still miss him.

That just made me cry like a baby. So happy for Benny but watching all the other dogs left behind being all excited and maybe they never make it out. So sad, I wish I could adopt them all.

This particular shelter is atrocious, but I've seen some comments here advocating for no-kill shelters and banning those that euthanize, and I'd like to have a word on that. I volunteered for a animal shelter that had to occasionally euthanize animals for two years. The problem with no-kill shelters is that though they don't kill, they do turn animals that they don't think they can rehabilitate away. I even knew one that would turn away all pit bulls, regardless of their behavior! My animal shelter took in all animals (we even had goats at one point) but the downside is that some animals are just too far gone or too sick for us and our limited resources to help. My shelter is often where the dogs that the no kill shelters wouldn't take go; these no-kill shelters are really just pushing the problem onto someone else. We hate having to put animals down, but sometimes it's the lesser of two evils. If you want to help prevent this, donate to your local animal shelter and adopt shelter pets

Any facility that has a high kill rate should not be allowed to call itself a "shelter."

great story, so happy for the dog. We visited high kill shelter couple days ago, its horrible to see all these pups and know that most of them will be put down. Adoption or fostering is the best thing we can do for them :(

I wonder why he was so scared when the lady opened the cage. Fear of death because animals are less stupid than humans they know when death is a current thing in one place? Or because these supposedly nice shelter people beat them once in a while because who cares?

The shelter environment is very high stress and creates anxiety in them. I do believe they sense death as well. :'( I read from a shelter worker that every single one of them pulls and resists when entering that back room....Having volunteered with a rescue, I can say that many kenneled animals react with fear, even when treated with kindness in a safe rescue setting. It's an unnatural environment for an animal to be in, all caged up, so you almost never see their true loving nature in that setting.
